The Zen Monastic Experience (Robert E. Buswell)

One of the most striking features of Buddhism, which began in Central Asia and proto-India, are the architectural features known as stupas -- which bear a striking similarity to the much older tradition the Buddha was following from Central and North Asia: tumuli, kurgans, barrows, burial mounds. Where they are place, what is put in them, and what they were used for is mysterious.

Long ago, our UCLA Professor of Buddhism Dr. Robert E. Buswell, Jr. told the class an amazing story. He had been a Zen monk in Korea (at Songgwang-sa, Cholla Namdo), living an austere life, and a Theravada Thai Buddhist monk in Thailand then disrobed and went on to become a doctoral student and professor. He detailed the long hours of meditation sesshins, how little they ate, how they slept on straw mats in the hall, which were then rolled up for a day of sitting zazen. It was the real thing, not our silly notions of Zen as wandering about navel gazing and pondering koans. One day he was surprised that to break the monotony of this season of intensive practice, when half of the monks went on extra duty cooking, warming, cleaning, and providing support, and the other half did nothing but meditate. Perhaps not understanding Korean as fluidly as he would go on to do, the monks were laughing -- if memory serves, and memory of old college lectures is not the most reliable source of information -- as they attempted to stick a straw from the broom in his scalp. Why? There was nowhere for it to go. He tried many times. They all smiled or laughed.

• Zen austerities during sesshin included these things that left us rapt in class, particularly one aspiring Angeleno wanting nothing more than to move to India and become an extreme ascetic to gain the path and win enlightenment right away:
• They would wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 in morning
• Go to a water pump, dip two fingers in salt to brush their teeth
• Go sit on reed mats and stiff cushions for the morning sit
• Eat a meal of boiled rice, daikon radish they grew, a slice of ginger, and if they were lucky a sprinkle of sesame seed
• Then go to meditate more, for 18 hours a day
• If someone started to nod off, the Zen master might bring out swords for meditators to lean their chins on (and no one would ever fall asleep)
• It was cold outside, and the zendo was warmed from the wooden floor by some creative technology from the kitchen or furnace room circulating heat under the boards.
• Sesshin is, of course, an intensive, so it wasn't always like this. During the rest of the year they might chop wood, carry water, grow vegetables (mainly daikon), go on alms, rake leaves, and be mindful all day long.
• (Prof. Buswell's great insight was that the Zen monastic experience is not a bunch of iconoclastic Beat poets sitting around, drinking tea, puffing pipes, writing haiku, pondering koans, and playing the flute under cherry blossom trees. They were all very learned in the texts and other studies and were in this monastery to practice beyond words. As Americans we think Zen is the easiest of all the Buddhisms because it's just "whatever," anything we want it to be. But that is not how it is in serious Asia, where this tradition is the way of "meditation" (which is what jhana, dhyana, Chan, and Zen, or Seon in Korean, mean). So with all this meditating, it's no wonder one would be more sensitive to subtle energies and architectural emanations:

When they went on their walking tour, they were headed for a stupa (솔도파, soldopha, a stone burial mound housing the Buddha's and other enlightened individuals' sacred relics or sharira). When they arrived, he reported that meditation went much better, more plunging into "Zen," which literally means jhana or "meditative absorption." His meditation was disturbed when the monks gathered around him, handed him the straw, and now it went into a pore in his scalp. The pore opened large enough to stand the straw on end. He was surprised as there had been no way to do it, to stand it, previously. The class asked, "Why, what changed, what does it mean?"

• Discussing this story just now, it occurs that the "pore opening" was an assumption. The straw may have stood on end all by itself without sitting into an enlarged pore. It was just necessary, hearing the story, to imagine that it went into a little hole that opened like a third eye. But imagine an electrified field buzzing with static cling raising the straw. He didn't seem to know other than it was just a tiny paranormal proof that meditation near these ancient Buddhist stone structures is different. Being near sharira (remains, ashes, colorful silica, glassy beads, gems from the sacred pyre) is different, and that's why they are honored. Maybe stupas (circumambulation mounds) are built on ley lines, over vortices, near portals? Maybe building them creates a portal or energy anomaly?

Sure, it could have been psychosomatic, but that seems unlikely since he didn't know what the straw was meant to do or represent in the first place. Imagine, as a hypothetical example, that it is impossible for you to get into full lotus. You just can't, never have been to from too much sitting in chairs and not doing yoga. Then you go to a stupa and suddenly slip into the posture without much effort. What changed? You weren't trying to get into it. It just came naturally. These are trivial things, but they're concrete.

Those Korean Zen Buddhist monks knew meditation would be different around the kurgan/stupa. Surely anyone who hangs around these ancient structures will eventually experience something odd. We dash in during the day, laughing and horsing around with friends, body hair rise and tingle, we giggle, run out, take a picture, and wonder why and how they were built. And we think we know the first thing about them? It's like going to Lake Titicaca to the portal rock with a doorframe carved in it for no apparent reason. Slapping the rock, taking a picture, and going away we think we know anything about what that place can do and why it was built.

It was a very strange meeting of minds at the annual "Festival of the Chariots" on the Venice Beach Boardwalk.

The morning began with KPFK (90.7 FM) playing Alan Watts on the topic of the Bhavagad Gita, devotional-Hinduism "Song of the Lord."

It's a world-famous text that attempts to tell an unbelievable story about how "God" on Earth, Lord Krishna (the "Dark One") argues with Arjuna (the best of men) to kill.

Arjuna doesn't want to kill, particularly not his friends an relatives. But Krishna insists it's the right thing to do.

It must be some kind of metaphor. Surely, it's a metaphor. It can't be literal. No religious text would tell its devotees to KILL or that it's right to kill as long as you're "just doing your job," aka social "duty" (innate obligation under the Vedas' strict caste system) and obeying the Lord.

It turns out it does. These mainly white Hare Krishna converts each said they would kill if God told them to. They weren't kidding. They urged me to kill if instructed. I said, "You must be out of your mind." It's like the satirical Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys opening that song from Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables with the line, "God told me to skin you alive."

Krishna and Krist are pro-gun?

We think of conservative, Republican, gun-toting Jesus freaks eager for war with Russia -- or whomever the Pentagon is designating as the enemy of the moment, which as in Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, changes from time to time. Sometimes we're told to hate/fear the communists of China, other times the Muslims of the Middle East, or the Ruskies or the liberals or the Satanists or the unpatriotic or, worst of all, those damned Unbelievers.

No wonder India gets so much "communal violence," which is when Hindu mobs practice ahimsa (non-violence) to the utmost -- murdering Muslims, Christians, members of other castes or creeds or ethnicities -- because they, as the majority, are whipped up into believing the "other" is harming their interests. Indian Prime Minister Modi is accused of inciting ethnic violence and getting tens of thousands murdered to promote himself and his political party, the BJP, and Indian patriotism above all.

At no time did Alan Watts say the central dialogue between the Lord (a kind of "all-attractive" Krist figure) and the ideal man Arjuna was a metaphor. And everyone to a man today said, "It's not a metaphor. It's literally true. I would kill if God (Krishna) told me to."

What is this juggernaut? Ratha Yatra Jagannath or Festival of Chariots

Expect someone to come down from space ("heaven") and tell the Indians it's time to kill those darn, pesky, Muslim Pakistanis...and they'll do it with Christian Crusader gusto, "Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition." Un be liev a ble. So much for only being a cult aggressively panhandling for cash donations, ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna CONsciousness) is so much more and eventually will be a willing arm of the Indian Army.

A Brahmin was crying over his dead son’s grave when he saw a grieving deva (lit., "shining one") who was disguised as a young man.

Brahmin: "My dear child, you are very handsome, wearing polished earrings, garlands, and sandalwood cream. You are weeping, holding your head in your hands in the middle of this forest. Why are you crying so sadly?"

Deva: "I have received a bright golden chariot, but it does not have wheels. That is why I am so sad. I am about to commit suicide."

Brahmin: "Oh dear boy, tell me, what kind of wheels do you need? Should they be made of gold, jewels, rubies, or silver? I will give you a pair of wheels made from anything."

Deva: "We can see the sun and moon right here. It would be great if my chariot could have them as wheels."

Brahmin: "Oh, dear boy, you are indeed foolish. You seek something that cannot be obtained. I am sure that you will die from sadness because it is impossible to get the sun and moon as your wheels."

Deva: "But wait a minute. We can see the sun and moon moving [rolling] in the sky. We can see their color and tracks. But when someone dies, one can never see him again. So who is more foolish, you or me? You are crying over your dead son, who cannot even be seen, and I am crying over something that can at least be seen."

Brahmin: "Oh, dear boy, what you just said is very true! Of the two of us, I am the greater fool. I am crying to get my dead son back, like a childish boy crying to obtain the moon.

"My heart was burning with sadness over the death of my son, like when fat is poured onto a fire. But now, all my sorrow has been extinguished as if I had been sprayed with water. I was struck with an arrow of grief, but you have removed it from me, my dear boy. Having heard your advice, I have become tranquil and cool, with the arrow of sorrow removed. I no longer grieve or weep."

"Are you a deva, a divine musician [or divine messenger, gandhabba], the divine king Sakka, or some deva’s son (devaputta)? Who are you?"

Deva: "Your son has been cremated in this cemetery. You are weeping over his remains. I am that son of yours! Having done a meritorious deed, I was reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three [Tavatimsa, where Sakka, king of the devas is our divine king] as a deva."

Brahmin: "We have never known you to give a small or large gift in charity. We have never known you to observe the Five Precepts or Eight Precepts. What kind of meritorious action did you do to go to [this lowly] heaven?"

Deva: "Do you remember when I was very sick and lying sadly on a bed outside our house? One day, all of a sudden, I saw the Supreme Buddha who had great wisdom and a pure mind, who had realized everything about this world.

"I was very happy and had confidence [faith] when I saw him. I quickly honored him. That was the only meritorious action (kusala karma) I did that as a result I was reborn in this heavenly place."

Brahmin: "It is wonderful! Just mere honoring has resulted in a great happiness. Without delay, on this very day, I happily place confidence [faith, belief] in the Buddha. I go for guidance to the Buddha."

Deva: "That is exactly what you should do! From this very day, go for guidance to the Supreme Buddha, the Supreme Dharma [Teaching], and the Supreme Sangha [community of noble practitioners] with a confident mind. Follow the Five Precepts honestly without breaking any of them.

"Stop killing any living beings, never steal, never drink alcohol, never lie, never commit sexual misconduct but be content with your own spouse."

Brahmin: "Oh Deva, you really wish for my wellbeing. You have been very helpful to me. From today onward, you are my teacher. I will do all the things you advised me to do. With a confident mind I go for guidance to the Supreme Buddha, the excellent Dharma, and the [noble = aryan = enlightened] disciples of the Great Teacher — the Noble Sangha. I will stop killing living beings, never steal anything, never drink alcohol, never lie, and never commit sexual misconduct but be content with my own spouse."

The Buddha in space (akasha deva loka), Spaceport 33 where Sakka is an Earth-friendly ruler. This is an artist's conception of the Buddha presenting a sutra to the "shining ones" (devas) on a nearby planet or port called Tavatimsa.

It is amazing and remarkable that the world's mythology repeats and repeats. The consistency of the "mythology" is amazing. The names change:

• Vedic Brahmanism's Indra the God of Thunder
• becomes Buddhism's Sakra, King of Kings and Lords of [the 33] Lords, on Mt. Sumeru (also called Mt. Meru)
• becomes Zeus (the "God of the Sky") the "Father of [Celestials] and Humans" according to Hesiod's Theogony) on Mt. Olympus
• becomes Jupiter to the Romans
• becomes the Vikings' Odin...

the pantheons have the same arrangement with a few alterations to make them understandable to each culture that comes to know of them. Who are the celestial "gods" other than extraterrestrial aliens? They are human (sometimes demigod-hybrids).

But our entire vision of "space alien" has been so maligned by a misinformation campaign that we fail to see that these are the "angels" and "gods" and "goddesses" of the world's spiritual traditions. Soon science will speak openly of the mountains of concrete evidence for UFOs and ancient extraterrestrial civilizations here and elsewhere throughout the solar system and galaxy. Why did ancient Norse warriors go so bravely into battle? Because, should they die in the heat of the fight, they had Valhalla to look forward to, Odin's great Hall of the Slain.

Valhalla is in the Grove of Glesir in Asgard, the home of the Aesir gods [extraterrestrials by definition]. Encircled by a strong outer wall, this glorious hall's inner walls were said to be built of weapons and treasures. The hall was so huge that its 500 [a "large number" of] doors allow soldiers to pour out on doomsday -- Ragnarok.

Ragnarok is the expected "last day" of the world or this cycle, when the gods do battle with evil and ultimately die, bringing about the end of the world. This is the reason for Odin's shinning Hall of Valhalla. When a warrior died valiantly in battle he is would be chosen by Odin and taken up [in a ship not necessarily into space but possibly into a paradise in the hollow Earth] to Valhalla by a Valkyrie (Apsara or Gandharvi) to join his fallen brothers.

[This mirrors the view in Judaism and ancient Greek "Paganism" of the world-to-come as Sheol or Hades. In modern times we view the underground in an almost entirely negative light. But it is not this way. Some levels of "hell" are beneath our feet in Christian (purgatory) and Buddhist, Hindu, Jain (naraka) cosmology. But there are other inner-Earth worlds, such as those described by the American Navy Admiral Richard Byrd, in the Vedas (Underground Realms), and in Zoroastrianism (Hamistagan) where everyone ends up for a time.]

• Of course, how would one ever get others to believe that our "solid" Earth is hollow, when the thought of alien spacecraft and advanced space beings not at war with us is impossible to imagine? Evidence counts for nothing in either above us or below us because the possibility is dismissed out of hand. It is too upsetting, overthrowing our preconceptions. It shatters our comfortable paradigm that we are at the center of our self-absorbed universe, which all groups believe of themselves. But call it "mythology" and people are at least able to contemplate it.

Getting into Valhalla, however, is not easy. [Only half get in, with the other half going to Folkvangr.] The chosen first have to pass obstacles, tests of strength, skill, and bravery before gaining entry through the sacred gate, Valgrind. Once inside, one can expect a pleasurable afterlife of miraculous healing, feasting, and fighting [yes, fighting because heaven is not "heaven," with war and conflict still prevalent in the sense realm], as well as a never-ending supply of mead [soma].

Indeed, Valhalla was a very desirable and enviable afterlife for the ancient Norse warrior, much better than the fate of the dreadful and dreary afterlife in the realm of Hel expected for those who died of natural causes. This may have encouraged the warring nature of the ancient Norsemen... eager for a Viking's Paradise!

Not the first to make the connection

Wisdom Quarterly is not the first to make the connection between various culture's spiritual "histories": Tavatimsa is located on the peak of Mt. Sumeru, the axis mundi, at a height of 80,000 yojanas. The total area of the heaven is 80,000 yojanas square. This celestial world is therefore comparable to the Greek's Mt. Olympus in some respects.

According to Vasubandhu, inhabitants of "The World of the Thirty-three" (Tavatimsa) each half a krośa tall (about 1,500 feet) and live for 1,000 Tavatimsa-years. Each Tavatimsa-day is equivalent to 100 Earth-years.

Because that world is physically connected to Earth through Sumeru -- which seems to be a kind of launch site or route or spaceway more than any rock and dirt "mountain." Unlike the space worlds above it, the inhabitants there are unable to avoid becoming entangled in human affairs.

In particular, they frequently find themselves in quarrels with the Asuras, "Titans," who were long ago expelled from Tavatimsa, at the beginning of the reign of the present Śakra (which is actually a position more than a single individual, much like a human monarch or president). This angered them and led to a star war (as in Star Wars or what is commonly referred to as a "War in Heaven," heaven simply being the sky). The Titans now dwell at the foot of Mt. Sumeru, that is to say on the surface of this planet, devising plans to recover their lost home.

The Titans cannot be so different from the Devas. For there is marriage between the two, just as there is between the Æsir and the jötnar in Norse mythology.

The chief of the The World of the Thirty-three is Śakra (Sakka). Other members of the Thirty-three who are frequently mentioned are Viśvakarman (Vissakamma), the devas' crafter and builder; Mātali, who drives Śakra's vimana, spacecraft, or "chariot"; and Sujā, Śakra's Titan-wife and daughter of the Asura chief Vemacitrin (Vepacitti), a kind of Lucifer figure in Buddhism as distinct from a "Satan" or tempter figure (Mara). Flying Cars Now on Sale + Levitation

A U.S. company has realized the longstanding fantasy of a flying car.

Terrafugia Inc.'s "roadable aircraft," named Transition, completed its first flight at Plattsburgh, N.Y., 3/18/09, the company said. "It’s what aviation enthusiasts have been striving for since 1918," CEO Carl Dietrich said in a news release.

But with an expected price tag of $194,000 US by the time the first one is delivered to a user in 2011, it's not likely to reach a mass market. The Transition is aimed at giving sport and private pilots convenient ground transportation.

According to the company, the two-seat vehicle can take off and land at smaller airports, and the pilot can convert it to a roadworthy vehicle by retracting the wings from inside the cockpit in less than 30 seconds. More>>

Ancient India: Spacecraft and Levitation

Ancient India also advanced technology -- vimanas (spacecraft, flying machines) and levitation. Since the science for each was not preserved with tangible examples, it has been relegated to the annals of myth. Every world religion speaks of these things, yet it is more regarded as more sensible to utterly doubt such things could have possibly existed.

And although religious texts such as the Vedas document them and designate their origin as extraterrestrial, serious public discussion of them is a complete non-starter. That does not, however, preclude their discussion at manufacturing plants, university labs, and in various professors' garages.

The great Salt Flats are everyone's own Skunk Works for testing ideas handed down through the ages. Look up on a dark night and behold the Chariots of Fire, which can be communicated with using intention, lasers, and specific protocols (Ref: Dr. Brooks Alexander Agnew). Other nations (as well as our own in secret tests) have long taken these things seriously and have allocated millions to study their feasibility.

It only took The Jetsons (a hit 1960's cartoon series) to give the idea a life of its own, an idea already in the collective memory and carried again to fruition by modern engineers. Because whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're right.
