Let's test this claim empirically.
Simple science: Place levels on hands to see if rod movements are due to unconscious tilts of the hand, not "energy" itself moving the metal. It may indeed be human sensitivity then translated into micro muscle movements, as seems to account for pendulum swinging. All that may be happening is that the body is the transducer, and the rods or pendulum are the outward sign of what our intuitive/sensitive body is experiencing. This "scientific" is not meant to debunk the fact that dowsing works, just to establish that it is not the energy acting directly on the rods but rather a "feeling" is being expressed by unconscious movement, the movement of the hands being the mover of the rods. It would be good to know because it is not human sensitivity, then simply place the rods on a mannequin or robot for an object test. Certainly, there are psi meters used in parapsychological investigations of allegedly haunted sites that should move where dowsers claim ley or energy lines exist. Not everything need be woo-woo if an objective test can be established to test a site. Bringing in a potted plant connected to a kind of (galvanic skin response style) lie detector connected to a sound synthesizer would be a marvelous addition to dowsing, the way British Jimmy Page used in "Whole Lotta Love" live at Madison Square Garden at their greatest performance.

How do you know if you're hip?
Like a Tibetan wind horse, for decades the flag of the Bodhi Tree Bookstore rode the breeze above Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.
At first the freak flag flew to attract only the most underground. Then it became the flag over the capitol of the New Age. Who could count the number...that have known the complementary Bodhi Tree bookmark, with its tree logo, and the slogan: "Books to Illuminate the Heart and Mind"?
At first, run by hippies for hippies, with only a few portraits of spiritual masters on the walls, it seemed like a mirage conspired by a couple of dropouts. Then punk rockers arrived, because at the Bodhi Tree they could find books by William Burroughs, Patti Smith, and Bukowski.
As the New Age grew from a mild trickle to a mighty river, for enthusiasts the Bodhi Tree became not only the top destination in Southern California, but for many, in the United States...
[Co-Founders] Stan Madson and Phil Thompson were a couple of literal rocket scientists, aerospace engineers to be exact. They weren’t the only young people who wanted to do something more positive with their lives at the end of the 1960s.
However, they are among the few who actually did it. They created the Bodhi Tree Bookstore. In an interview with Ray Hemachandra in 2006, Stan talked about the origins of the Bodhi Tree Bookstore. It all began when he attended an event headlined by Timothy Leary:
“Tim Leary was there in a white gown, and he opened by having The Grateful Dead play music. I had never heard of The Grateful Dead. Leary said the idea was to tune in, turn on, and drop out.” But Stan was working in aerospace, he couldn’t take the plunge.
Next came Zen meditation. Then a serendipitous meeting while on a walk in Calabasas led to “a session of private talks with Krishnamurti on an estate in Malibu. So about 30 of us were sitting around talking with Krishnamurti.”
Transcendental meditation followed. “Out of all of this, and sitting around and talking amongst ourselves, we decided that there was something intrinsically wrong with doing aerospace and supporting the practice of thermonuclear war.” Years later, looking back on his life, he expressed his happiness that he had found [Buddhist] “right livelihood.”
Phil and Elsa Thompson and Stan and Fran Madson partnered with Dan and Marj Morris to open the Bodhi Tree Book and Tea Shop. The songs on the radio at the time almost tell its story. The Beatles had broken up. We can be sure “The Long and Winding Road” was playing on the transistor radio when they were hammering together the shelves and painting the walls in the modest Bodhi Tree 1.0.

“Let it Be” had been on the radio for a few months already, along with Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Sly and the Family Stone had a hit with “Everybody is a Star,” a song title to bring a smile to any Platonist, Paracelsian, or Thelemite.
On July 10, 1970, the Bodhi Tree opened. Bodhi Tree’s first Christmas, George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” was Number 1. But Janis Joplin had just died that October. Jimi Hendrix had died only a few weeks before Janis. Jim Morrison would die the following summer.
Soon the clean mellow sound of California folk pop, the introspection of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King, ruled the airwaves. People turned inward in search of answers to suddenly pressing questions about the meaning of life, the laws of good health, and the history of human spirituality.
By 1976 the Bodhi Tree’s business had doubled then redoubled and so on so rapidly that they bought the building they had been leasing. The labor of love they themselves didn’t expect to last very long had become a success.
Dan and Marj decided to move on, perhaps because the Bodhi Tree was turning into a demanding business. On the last day of November in 1972, Phil and Elsa along with Stan and Fran formed a corporation called Bodhi Tree Bookstore Incorporated. They dropped the tea shop but always offered free tea for customers to drink and a wide selection of exotic and rare blends, both packaged and bulk, the latter to be scooped out of big glass jars and poured into ever present plastic bags.
In 1978, the small bookcase of used books grew into a stucco cottage next door that became Bodhi Tree Used Book Branch. It had a few shelves on the porch outside the old wooden door offering free books at any hour.
When shoppers entered, they breathed in the aromatic delights of the bulk herb room. Shelves of big mason jars filled with dried lavender, rose petals, licorice root, eyebright, star anise, chamomile, eucalyptus leaves, teas, and of course catnip. More:

One of the most striking features of Buddhism, which began in Central Asia and proto-India, are the architectural features known as stupas -- which bear a striking similarity to the much older tradition the Buddha was following from Central and North Asia: tumuli, kurgans, barrows, burial mounds. Where they are place, what is put in them, and what they were used for is mysterious.
Long ago, our UCLA Professor of Buddhism Dr. Robert E. Buswell, Jr. told the class an amazing story. He had been a Zen monk in Korea (at Songgwang-sa, Cholla Namdo), living an austere life, and a Theravada Thai Buddhist monk in Thailand then disrobed and went on to become a doctoral student and professor. He detailed the long hours of meditation sesshins, how little they ate, how they slept on straw mats in the hall, which were then rolled up for a day of sitting zazen. It was the real thing, not our silly notions of Zen as wandering about navel gazing and pondering koans. One day he was surprised that to break the monotony of this season of intensive practice, when half of the monks went on extra duty cooking, warming, cleaning, and providing support, and the other half did nothing but meditate. Perhaps not understanding Korean as fluidly as he would go on to do, the monks were laughing -- if memory serves, and memory of old college lectures is not the most reliable source of information -- as they attempted to stick a straw from the broom in his scalp. Why? There was nowhere for it to go. He tried many times. They all smiled or laughed.
Zen austerities during sesshin included these things that left us rapt in class, particularly one aspiring Angeleno wanting nothing more than to move to India and become an extreme ascetic to gain the path and win enlightenment right away:
They would wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 in morning
Go to a water pump, dip two fingers in salt to brush their teeth
Go sit on reed mats and stiff cushions for the morning sit
Eat a meal of boiled rice, daikon radish they grew, a slice of ginger, and if they were lucky a sprinkle of sesame seed
Then go to meditate more, for 18 hours a day
If someone started to nod off, the Zen master might bring out swords for meditators to lean their chins on (and no one would ever fall asleep)
It was cold outside, and the zendo was warmed from the wooden floor by some creative technology from the kitchen or furnace room circulating heat under the boards.
Sesshin is, of course, an intensive, so it wasn't always like this. During the rest of the year they might chop wood, carry water, grow vegetables (mainly daikon), go on alms, rake leaves, and be mindful all day long.
(Prof. Buswell's great insight was that the Zen monastic experience is not a bunch of iconoclastic Beat poets sitting around, drinking tea, puffing pipes, writing haiku, pondering koans, and playing the flute under cherry blossom trees. They were all very learned in the texts and other studies and were in this monastery to practice beyond words. As Americans we think Zen is the easiest of all the Buddhisms because it's just "whatever," anything we want it to be. But that is not how it is in serious Asia, where this tradition is the way of "meditation" (which is what jhana, dhyana, Chan, and Zen, or Seon in Korean, mean). So with all this meditating, it's no wonder one would be more sensitive to subtle energies and architectural emanations:
When they went on their walking tour, they were headed for a stupa (솔도파, soldopha, a stone burial mound housing the Buddha's and other enlightened individuals' sacred relics or sharira). When they arrived, he reported that meditation went much better, more plunging into "Zen," which literally means jhana or "meditative absorption." His meditation was disturbed when the monks gathered around him, handed him the straw, and now it went into a pore in his scalp. The pore opened large enough to stand the straw on end. He was surprised as there had been no way to do it, to stand it, previously. The class asked, "Why, what changed, what does it mean?"
Discussing this story just now, it occurs that the "pore opening" was an assumption. The straw may have stood on end all by itself without sitting into an enlarged pore. It was just necessary, hearing the story, to imagine that it went into a little hole that opened like a third eye. But imagine an electrified field buzzing with static cling raising the straw. He didn't seem to know other than it was just a tiny paranormal proof that meditation near these ancient Buddhist stone structures is different. Being near sharira (remains, ashes, colorful silica, glassy beads, gems from the sacred pyre) is different, and that's why they are honored. Maybe stupas (circumambulation mounds) are built on ley lines, over vortices, near portals? Maybe building them creates a portal or energy anomaly?
Sure, it could have been psychosomatic, but that seems unlikely since he didn't know what the straw was meant to do or represent in the first place. Imagine, as a hypothetical example, that it is impossible for you to get into full lotus. You just can't, never have been to from too much sitting in chairs and not doing yoga. Then you go to a stupa and suddenly slip into the posture without much effort. What changed? You weren't trying to get into it. It just came naturally. These are trivial things, but they're concrete.

Those Korean Zen Buddhist monks knew meditation would be different around the kurgan/stupa. Surely anyone who hangs around these ancient structures will eventually experience something odd. We dash in during the day, laughing and horsing around with friends, body hair rise and tingle, we giggle, run out, take a picture, and wonder why and how they were built. And we think we know the first thing about them? It's like going to Lake Titicaca to the portal rock with a doorframe carved in it for no apparent reason. Slapping the rock, taking a picture, and going away we think we know anything about what that place can do and why it was built.

Coast to Coast AM.com, Aug. 13, 2023: Researcher and electrical engineer Ben Lonetree discusses decades of scientific studies on naturally occurring phenomena electromagnetic (vortex) energies and how they interact with human biophysical mechanisms.
He talks about the science of Sedona, Arizona, and his theory of the Sedona Effect and Sedona Vortex brainwave EEG synchronization. After hearing the small pink town of Sedona described decades ago as the place where "the Earth speaks," Lonetree was initially skeptical.

But he noticed that his scientific instruments always registered elevated energy levels there. Armed with an array of very sophisticated equipment, Lonetree set out to investigate Sedona's Schumann resonance (the degree to which the area's electromagnetic frequencies or EMFs matched those of the human brain).
What he discovered, Lonetree claims, was remarkable. The naturally occurring magnetic energy coming from the ground at Sedona is "spinning like a tornado" in a vortex pattern.
How then, he wondered, did this phenomenon affect human consciousness? Lonetreee's subjects would react in strange ways to Sedona's magnetic environment, bursting into tears or getting giddy with laughter.
His instruments confirmed that each surge in vortex energy in the ground caused a corresponding surge in subjects' brainwave activity. By drawing human emotions out in this way, the vortex allows us to examine our feelings in ways that make them coherent and manageable, Lonetree suggests.
