A monumental complex built by the Maya of Mesoamerica (Tabasco, Mexico) an estimated 3,000 years ago was modeled on a map of the cosmos (universe), new fieldwork has revealed.

A detailed survey of the Aguada Fénix site reveals that not only was the monument significantly larger than initial surveys suggested – laid out in the shape of a cross with axes measuring 5.6 and 4.7 miles (9 and 7.5 kilometers) – but it was also designed as a cosmogram, a kind of Buddhist mandala, an architecture symbolizing the cosmos (Buddhist cosmology, Earthly realms).

What's even more remarkable about the structure is that the site contains none of the trappings of social inequality, such as elite residences or sculptures of rulers. This strongly implies that egalitarian cultures were capable of monumental building works without the application of coercive force through a stratified social hierarchy ruled by a king or queen.

The Maya cosmos mapped out on Earth?

The discovery of Aguada Fénix by way of LiDAR surveys, in the Mexican state of Tabasco near the Gulf of Mexico, was fascinating for a number of reasons.

The first was its size; it was the largest Maya site ever found, even going by the more modest initial estimate of 1.4 kilometers along its longest axis. And it wasn't hidden in the forest, as so many lost Mesoamerican (Mexican), Central American, and South American structures are.

This find is the result of a cartographic expedition led by Yekaterina Katiya Pavlova and Adrián Beltrán Dimas.

Mysterious artifacts in the cave

Among the finds were shell bracelets, a large snail shell, and fragments of stone disks resembling pyrite mirrors. According to INAH (the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History), these objects may have been used for ritual purposes.

Archeologists discovered symbols on them that could be related to ancient beliefs.

Miguel Perez, an INAH archeologist, emphasizes that the discovery is of great importance for understanding the culture and symbolism of pre-Hispanic (before Spanish conquest) societies that inhabited the Sierra de Guerrero.

The findings may help interpret their cosmology and rituals related to fertility and creation.

History of the Sierra de Guerrero region

The Sierra de Guerrero region, where the discovery was made, was inhabited by the Tlacotepehaus ethnic group during the post-classic period, between 950 and 1521 AD. The area was abandoned due to extreme weather conditions, which made life difficult for its inhabitants.

Symbolism and significance of the artifacts Cuauhtemoc Reyes Alvarez from INAH suggests that the symbols on the bracelets may be related to cosmology concerning creation and fertility.

Caves might have been perceived as portals to the underworld or sacred spaces connected with divinity.

Man claims he can tap into ancient energy fields

Let's test this claim empirically.

Simple science: Place levels on hands to see if rod movements are due to unconscious tilts of the hand, not "energy" itself moving the metal. It may indeed be human sensitivity then translated into micro muscle movements, as seems to account for pendulum swinging. All that may be happening is that the body is the transducer, and the rods or pendulum are the outward sign of what our intuitive/sensitive body is experiencing. This "scientific" is not meant to debunk the fact that dowsing works, just to establish that it is not the energy acting directly on the rods but rather a "feeling" is being expressed by unconscious movement, the movement of the hands being the mover of the rods. It would be good to know because it is not human sensitivity, then simply place the rods on a mannequin or robot for an object test. Certainly, there are psi meters used in parapsychological investigations of allegedly haunted sites that should move where dowsers claim ley or energy lines exist. Not everything need be woo-woo if an objective test can be established to test a site. Bringing in a potted plant connected to a kind of (galvanic skin response style) lie detector connected to a sound synthesizer would be a marvelous addition to dowsing, the way British Jimmy Page used in "Whole Lotta Love" live at Madison Square Garden at their greatest performance.

Archaeologists have discovered the remains of an ancient Mayan city in Mexico. The site is sprawling and had several pyramid-like structures measuring around five stories tall.

Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) discovered an ancient Mayan city inside the Balamku Ecological Reserve in Campeche state, Mexico on June 20, 2023.

The lead researcher said that it must have been an important site between 250 AD and 1000 AD.

Deep in the jungles of Mexico, the previously unknown village was discovered in the Yucatán Peninsula by a team from the Archeology Council of the INAH.

The site has several pyramid-like structures. measuring around 50 feet in height, Mexico's INAH said.

The site must have been an important center of the Central Lowlands during the Classic period dating back between 250 AD and 1000 AD, researchers said, based on ceramic collected from the site.

Mayan Calendar was more advanced than this later Aztec one.

Led by archeologist Ivan Sprajc, the team undertook a 60km (roughly 37 mile) journey through the dense vegetation of the Balamkú ecological reserve in Campeche state.

"The biggest surprise turned out to be the site located on a 'peninsula' on high ground, surrounded by extensive wetlands," Ṡprajc said in a statement. "Its monumental nucleus covers more than 50 hectares and has various large buildings, including several pyramidal structures over 15 meters [50 feet] high."

The cylindrical columns are believed to be entrances to the upper rooms. The researchers named the site Ocomtún, meaning "stone column" in the Mayan language.

"It is possible that they are markets or spaces destined for community rituals, but only future research will shed light on the functions of these groups, which represent a regional peculiarity," Sprajc said.

Sprajc said that the site most likely underwent changes between 800 and 1000 AD and then experienced the collapse of the Lowland Maya civilization in the 10th century.

Mexico's INAH also said that the discovery was made partly through airborne laser scanning carried out by the University of Houston, which helped locate the site in an area spanning 3,000 square km (roughly 1158 square miles) of the uninhabited jungle.

The Maya are considered to have been one of the most advanced civilizations in the Western hemisphere before the arrival of European settlers enslavers, invaders, and violent occupiers.

They lived in an area that now encompasses parts of modern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize and were known for their impressive architecture, love of ball games [including a game that was a mix of soccer (futbol) and basketball], advanced calendar systems, writing, and mathematics. Source
