August Uposatha Moon (What happened? )

WHAT HAPPENED?

We arrive at 8:00 am dressed all in white to take the Eight Precepts with a monk, chanting (call and response) repeating an ancient formula in the language of the Buddha, Pali (Magadhi, the easier lingua franca version of Sanskrit). Then we are served breakfast, traditional island fare.

The Buddha mostly taught lay practitioners.

Taking our seats on the folding backrests provided for meditation, the monks chanted and gave sermons, with everyone smiling and encouraging everyone else.

Half of what is going on is in the ancient Buddhist island Sinhalese language of Sri Lanka. Before long, it's time for lunch, but before we eat the donor family receives a special blessing. They are offering it to benefit their dearly departed mother, so a special "transfer of merit" ceremony is conducted, where they gather in a circle up front and pour clear water into a cup until it is overflowing, as monks chant that what is given here benefit the grateful dead. If the departed should rejoice at this act of merit -- giving to feed practitioners of the Eight Precepts -- that will be excellent mental karma for those departed beings on the other side of the veil. They will therefore, in a place with very few opportunities to perform any skillful karma, gain that opportunity. Then we eat. Soon we will practice mindfulness walking meditation as a group, but that is always available to practice individually, inside or outside in the warm sun.

Understanding the meaning of uposatha days in Buddhism (spiritualculture.org)

Although mostly silent and very respectful, people love to chat, mingle, and socialize. We sit apart from the crowd in the large outdoor patio near the temple's giant bodhi tree. The monastery looks like a high school with many rooms, offices, monks' quarters, a giant lawn, bell tower, parking lot, bathrooms, reading room, gym floor, stage, and lots of pews. It was originally built as a Protestant church in the valley with a great view of the San Gabriel Mountains on a very quiet street in the middle of Suburbia.

In the other direction, on a distant hill is Going West (Hsi Lai) Mahayana Buddhist Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the U.S. Another talk is followed by a guided meditation with a singing bowl gong and very soothing words. Tea is offered to us individually. We meditate and about 5:00 pm, as the retreat is ending, the ordinary Sunday Rains Retreat services are just beginning. What had been about 50 participants balloons up to more than 100, also all dressed in white, arriving to hear a sutra or sermon.

We are in a side classroom, near the special golden cetiya shrine room, with the Nepalese monk Ven. Suwan, and the pews are filled with everyone else listening to the Dhamma in Sinhalese. The English class addressed the deeper meaning of the Four Noble Truths:

1. Unsatisfactoriness (dukkha) is universal
2. There is a cause (a reason why)
3. There is a solution (cure)
4. There is a path-of-practice to end all suffering.

It is called "noble" (Aryan) because these four truths are "ennobling," this is, leading towards enlightenment for the practitioner who realizes their deeper significance.

The historical Buddha did not teach them for people to memorize or "believe," but rather to realize that these universal are always true and guide living beings toward liberation from all suffering all the way to the realization of nirvana. That could take lifetimes or be accomplished in this very life.

There's no time to waste and no telling we'll ever get an opportunity like this for eons, so precious is a human rebirth and all the more rare to ever meet the Dhamma, the Buddha's Teachings with a body and mind about to put his instructions into practice. Then dinner is served, a great assortment of island fare, mostly vegetarian/vegan and lots of conversation and mingling. It was a blessed time and repeats every month with the dates noted on this poster:

It's that time of year again, "Buddhist Lent," the Rains Retreat (Vassa), for intensive practice.

There is the weekly observance in accordance with the phases of the moon, but generally the full moon is thought to be the most important and it is usually the one observed the uposatha with the Eight Precepts and intensive meditation and hearing the Dhamma (Dharma).

The Theravada/Pali language tradition of Southeast Asia (Sri Lankan, Burmese, Thai, Cambodian, Laotian, and to a lesser degree in Vietnam and the United States) observe it in this way, particularly in the large diaspora communities of the United States. In the greater Los Angeles area, where all of these ethnic and cultural communities are represented, temples hold special events.

The Los Angeles Buddhist Vihara (now the MindfulnessMeditationCenter.org) deep in the suburbs of the San Gabriel Valley city of Covina, is having a daylong Full Moon Observance Meditation retreat on Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

This service is FREE or by donation (dana) and includes breakfast and lunch. It is conducted in Sinhalese and English. And there is an opportunity for any questions and requests for clarification. WEAR ALL WHITE as is the ancient custom from the time of the Buddha. The party took place in a Jewish household, with many Jewish vegans and allies in attendance. After an opening circle of welcome and personal introductions, the 40 or so partygoers -- having laid out their exotic vegan dishes on a long table -- grabbed plates, dove into the vegan cocoa (chocolate drink of cacao nibs, coconut milk, rice syrup sweetener, and secret ingredients brought to a froth by a swirling device). There was lots to sample, savor, taste, and dig into, with good company on top of that.

Oh, that's a good idea, healing, massage, food

Eating and socializing, socializing and eating, we turned our attention to a sacred candlelight ceremony for animals led by Lisa Levinson. One by one those who wished came up and lit a candle at a central coffee table upon which had been placed pools of water. The small candles were lit, the dedication made, and the candles floated atop the watery surface, as if to combine the elements with spirit and the lovingly kind intentions of those doing the lighting. With everyone gathering energy and sending it out for the benefit of humans and animals and human-animals, there was some weeping, profound joy, and a net of compassion spread out in all directions. There was some Jewish singing of the Hebrew sort, a Muslim dedication in the name of Allah, Buddhist dedications of Metta and wisdom-wishes for enlightenment of the world, and the singing of sacred Hindu chants with a heavy German accent. This is Southern California, and we're nothing if not eclectic.

Then we were all invited by Vanessa (ellorawellness.com) and Annie (Fruitluck Meetup) to the giant Vegan New Year's Eve party, a kind of formal catered event with massage on Dec. 31, 2024, in West Los Angeles. Then more socializing, hugs, networking, invitation and recipe exchanges, thanks to the hosts, until we were told that we didn't have to go home but we couldn't...at least not in the sacred shabbat space.

The Buddhist holiday season has just begun in the Theravada Buddhist world, as the Lent period comes to a close with a culminating ceremony called the Kathina ("Unshakeable") robe offering. It is a kind of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) after the fast rather than before it.

It is said that this is the most meritorious ceremony lay people participate in, generating a great deal of beneficial karma (punya, kusala kamma).

What happened?

The new facilities can hold ~1,000 people

The Buddhist temple (Mindfulness Meditation Center) was never more crowded. Both lots were full with cars overflowing onto the neighboring suburban streets.

Nearly everyone was dressed in white just like at the time of the Buddha. There were giant tents and chairs set up near the bodhi tree (a descendant of the original tree wandering ascetic Siddhartha sat under to become the Buddha, the "Awakened One"). Snack boxes were being given out, and monks were gathering in the hall.

Two Vietnamese Theravada nuns were filming the abbot, who is said to be over 100 years old. Abbot Ahangama Dhammarama may not be a centenarian yet, but he does hold the record for the longest person (more years in robes) than anyone in America. Although he may have committed defeat offenses as some say, he is still credited with the longest ordination period or years of seniority (more than 80).

The nuns gathered around him to take selfies as the monks assembled in the pews before lining up to go outside and take their seats at long tables under a giant tent. They chanted (having chanted until midnight the night before) blessings (parittas). Then the parade (perihera) began on the boulevard in front of the temple complex. We lined up to give offerings (dana) to the monastic who walked by with bowls and robes and large gift bags.

The monastics were then served delicious foods, both hard and soft, and devotees offered them their fill so they could return to their meditation. But this day marks the end of the intensive retreat period ("Lent"), so it was on to the awarding of the ceremonial "durable robe" for the temple's monastic resident who had best adhered to the Discipline in the preceding three months of the Rains.

That is a handy standard because this information is based on a disciple who knew Jesus, reporting firsthand knowledge to the extent any apostle or gospel actually does. (They were actually written much later, not contemporaneously). The whole religion is based on gospels (firsthand accounts), so many of which were "inconvenient" that they were thrown out of the official books of the Bible. But they are returned. There is the Apocrypha, Lost Gospels, Gnostic Gospels, Nag Hammadi Scrolls, Dead Sea Scrolls, papyri, inscriptions, fragments (mentions of lost texts in surviving texts), cuneiform tablets, and bits and pieces found here and there and sometimes backed by more ancient accounts from Sumer, Mesopotamia, and Babylonia. Christians do not believe those. What they believe are the four gospels, and this information is from John.

Priests wouldn't really be hypocrites, molesting and covering up?

It's in the Protestant Bible, in many translations, and clear in the original Ancient Greek

I'm just following this book, boys.

Where is this information coming from? It is coming the Bible (John 13:26 ff. Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I give this [bread] after I have dipped it [into this purple psychedelic]." Then He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot (biblehub.com) from the Greek translation of the Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ or "anointed" (Kristos, "sprinkled"?) gave drugs to little boy prostitutes, performing quasi-sexual acts, grooming behavior, lewd speech, and very strange things we have been lied to about.

But it's right there in the Bible (which is full of incest, murder, homosexuality, genocide, and god worship) for anyone to read and interpret. It has been misinterpreted, not necessarily misquoted, for us. Now readers of the original language may tell us what it unambiguously means, as Ammon Hillman does here.

Moses in the Bible says rape girls? Pedophiles. Boys, too?

Calling on his assistant Chuy (a Spanish nickname for anyone named Jesus), Hillman reads the Ancient Greek, and we may read along with him. Semen, bath towels, nudity, young boys, drugging...all of it is written and included in the Bible. Jesus' adopted son, Judas, is introduced to his mother as his husband or spouse.

We welcome any Christian to give a rebuttal based on the official text and early Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic terms themselves rather than apologetics.

Years ago, when the Catholic Church was in big trouble for all the revelations (unveilings) of priests raping little boy prostitutes they could get their hands on as elder priests and cardinals hid this from police and reassigned them to another parish, where the molestation continued.

Countless Catholic families have had their hearts broken that a trusted "father" (padre, priest, patriarch) has done this to their child AND the Church knew about it, and the Church protected shielded them from legal ramifications, covered it up, refused to cooperate with police investigations, brought in expensive lawyers to advise and shut down prosecutions -- when all that was happening, the satirists at South Park made an episode about it.

The local South Park priest goes to Rome to report that his fellow American priests are molesting little boys. He goes to the Vatican, where he is invited to address the cardinals, bishops, and the pope. When he reveals this, the holy congregation of men is confused why he's saying it.

The whistleblower priest asks them if they understand. The pope explains that what he's reporting is happening to children by child molesting priests is the main reason to join and be a member of this fraternal order of Catholic priests.

The South Park priest is gob smacked. It's very funny because it exactly seems to be the way it really is: Catholic priests molest children as a benefit, perk, and sacrament, finding it one of the best parts of the job. Far from an aberration, it is the central secret teaching. How did South Park figure it out?

  There is even a Buddhist connection. Ancient Buddhism is a monastic tradition, so it has homosexuality, child molestation, and a minor history of pederasty. (See Buddhism, Sex, and Gender). This is most shockingly expressed by a Buddhist documentary (Unmistaken Child, 2008) involving the current pope-king the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso. A young boy is declared a tulku (reincarnated lama returning to earth to be found and brought to the monastery to be raised and groomed by men). No one would dare imagine that any grooming is taking place, only a holy ritual of Tibetan culture, except in the movie the Dalai Lama fondles the penis of the small boy and laughs about it on camera. We did not see the movie but only heard about this from a disturbed Western woman who thought it was shocking that this was going on and that it was being done from the top down. The current Dalai Lama, the 14th one in the line, was a tulku brought to the lamasery and raised to be a rinpoche and pope-king. Was this done to him because it is a commonplace practice? The ordinary Tibetan Buddhist wouldn't know. Who knows what monks/priests (lamas) and bishops/cardinals (rinpoches) do in secret with their young charges? Pederasty may be a well-established practice, as it has been in Japan, according to Buddhism, Sex, and Gender, as it was in ancient Greece (and goodness knows still is in modern Greece).

• The connection is that the Jew Jesus was trained in this esoteric Vajrayana Buddhist tradition in ancient Tibet (now Ladakh, India, high in the Himalayas at Hemis Gompa, a lamasery that still stands. This is where Russian Christian scholar Nicholas Notovitch was shown written records of Jesus of Nazareth's 18 "lost" years not accounted for in the Bible. Jesus was in Asia, having journeyed there with a Jewish merchant caravan that frequently traveled between Jerusalem and Kashmir. Was Jesus (called St. Issa in Notovitch's account, later corroborated by Swami Abedananda and others, see Holger Kersten), practicing black magic (which in Tibet is the pre-Buddhist practice of Bon), witchcraft, siddhis (magical feats like walking on water) as lamas might train to do?

  Did Jesus then take those practices back to Judeah, Jerusalem, Israel, Palestine, Nazareth, around the Dead Sea along with a penchant for "magic potions" comprised of entheogenic/psychedelic plants, mushrooms, and flowers? There he is doing it on film, in a documentary, for anyone to see, and he is so out of touch with the world as religious royalty raised to rule in secular and spiritual matters, having led a cloistered life among so many males, that he thinks it's alright to do and can no more imagine why anyone would think it was wrong or strange or disgusting or criminal than he can understand a joke about pizza even after it is explained to him repeatedly by his personal translator.
