What do you mean we're "endangered"?
What is Ape Initiative? Ape Initiative (apeinitiative.org) is the only research center in the world dedicated to the study and conservation of the species most closely related to humans, the endangered bonobo.

Ape Initiative is a federally-recognized non-profit organization.

Just as humans ruined them, we must save them
With a focus on science, education, and outreach, AI's programs enrich the lives of seven bonobos born in captivity and foster a deeper connection between people and the natural world.

Bonobos are an endangered species of African Great Ape with as few as 15,000-20,000 individuals alive in the wild.

Understanding bonobo behavior, and how they interact with one another, is critical if we are going to save them.

Who's smarter, bonobos, chimps, or humans?
That’s why AI developed a scientifically grounded conservation education program for students of all ages. The goal is to inspire the next generation of scientists and educators by promoting scientific literacy and environmental stewardship.

Inside Edition(Inside Edition) Koko, the adored gorilla known for her sign language skills, has died at the age of 46. Koko rose to fame in the 1970s when an animal psychologist named Francine "Penny" Patterson taught her to communicate with humans using sign language. She graced the cover of National Geographic twice and understood about 2,000 words of spoken English. The late Robin Williams once called his interaction with Koko "a mind-altering experience." Inside Edition's Keleigh Nealon has more on this story. #InsideEdition (June 21, 2018).

Great ape personhood is a movement to extend "personhood" and some legal protections to the non-human members of the great ape family: bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans [1, 2, 3].

Advocates include primatologists Jane Goodall and Dawn Prince-Hughes, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, philosophers Paola Cavalieri and Princeton's Peter Singer, and Harvard Law School legal scholar Steven Wise [4, 5].

Studies by Dr. Goodall revealed that the social and family life of chimps are similar to those of human beings. She describes them as individuals and claims they relate to her as an individual member of the clan.

Shut up, Kanzi! You can't be a person.
Laboratory studies of ape language ability revealed other human traits, as did genetics, and eventually three of the great apes were reclassified as hominids. More

Apes freak out when I speak their language
Xiaomanyc 小马在纽约(Xiaomanyc 小马在纽约) I (Ari) spent weeks secretly studying ape communication, and then I convinced these bonobo apes into thinking I was one of them.

Bonobos are the closest living relatives of human beings, and while attempts have been made to teach them to use human language, it is very rare for human beings to try to communicate with bonobos on their terms using bonobo vocalizations and gestures.

So when I attempted to do this as an innocent visitor to this bonobo research center, the bonobos were genuinely shocked (freaked out), and we bonded pretty hard.

Carnage at In-N-Out [Death] Burgers

I'm an armed, entitled white male, and I'm here to shoot, kill, 'n be remembered as a Chad.*
Gigachad meme: Chad (net slang)
Chad
is a Midwest slang term for a type of young man. It was used in Chicago in the 2000s as a derogatory description for young, upper-class, urban males [1]. In modern internet slang, the term generally refers to an "Alpha" [2], a stud, a wanker, or sexually successful male [3] living in the American Manosphere.

DEATHS? In-N-Out Burgers Corporation [4, 5], doing business as "In-N-Out Burger," is an American regional chain of fast fried junk food restaurants with locations primarily in California and to a lesser extent the West Coast and Southwest [6], in the process of expanding into Idaho.

The company was founded in Baldwin Park, California, in 1948 by deceased Founders Harry Snyder (1913–1976, dead at 63 of cancer) and amateur accountant Esther Snyder (1920–2006, dead at 86 of unknown causes).

Anarchy Burger (Hold the Gov't)!
  • Mass deaths at the Abattoir? No!
Esther and Harry had three children, all dead prematurely: biological sons Harry Guy Snyder (1951-1999, dead at 48 of drug overdose) and [RichieRich Snyder (1952-1993, dead at in a plane crash, after returning from opening Store 93 in an OC mass death incident), and an adopted orphan son named Wilbur Stites (1951-1979, dead at 28 in a car crash), fostered since the 1960s.
  • Also, now dead through involvement with the death burger fast-food joint are at least one In-N-Out employee and two others yet to be identified (see below**) by police, with one of the injured parties being taxi driver Terry Dudley, who was charging his needy trillionaire Elon Musk-built Tesla. (The Tesla always being needy in terms of energy, not the Chad Elon Musk, who gets his energy from drug abuse).
  • Three burger eaters were murdered, and seven others were injured, preliminary reports suggest.
  • **Family members identified two of the many victims as Stockton In-N-Out Trainer/Manager Ashley Garibay, 23, and Christopher Claunch, 59.

The chain is headquartered in Irvine (OC), California, and has expanded outside SoCal into the rest of California, as well as into Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, and Tennessee.

I didn't mean to get anyone killed
The death-attracting corporation is planning an expansion into New Mexico [7, 8, 9] and wherever else slaughtered cows served with French fries are devoured in ghoulish rituals of mindless, distracted eating and tossing of bag, cups, and wrappers wherever is most convenient, such as a parking lot or public street.

This is usually preceded by getting high on marijuana, beer, hard alcohol (spiritous liquor), and/or pharmaceuticals. The current owner is Lynsi Snyder, the Snyders' only grandchild.  As the chain has expanded, it has opened several distribution centers in addition to its original Baldwin Park location. More

Danger: Some animals ❤️ to eat humans 🐻

It could never happen here in Los Angeles

Be an Animal Whisperer
Humans oftentimes violate the "law of the jungle," the territorial claims of carnivores and cornered or injured beasts who survive on instinct. For all the good and peaceful interactions we have most of the time, there are a few that show that some element of danger is ever present.
In the Rebirth Stories (Jataka Tales) of the Buddha, animals can talk. They communicate with one another, of course, but they are also able to cross the veil between their domain and ours. Cross species communication is real. Just ask an animal communicator:

    Tick-borne allergy to red meat
alpha-gal syndrome (AGS): A mammalian meat allergy (MMA) [1] is an acquired allergy to the epitope of the carbohydrate molecule galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose ("alpha-gal") [2]. Reactions can be life-threatening and typically either begin rapidly after exposure from intravenous therapy or 2–8 hours after ingesting foods and medicines. Reactions can also occur from skin contact and environmental exposures [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. AGS results from tick bites and, possibly, bites from other parasites [8, 9, 10]. Alpha-gal is present in all foods and ingredients made from slaughtered beef (cow), pork (pig), lamb (sheep), venison (deer), rabbit (rodent), and other mammal sources, including gelatin and milk.

Buddhism and Dalai Lama on meat eating

Can Buddhists eat meat?
  • What have we said time and again? Buddhists can do whatever they want. However, killing (or violating any of the other precepts) is not keeping in line with what the Buddha taught.
  • "Pig's Delight" (sukaramaddava): truffles, but in the case of the final meal offering, inadvertently poisonous/toxic mushrooms picked in error thinking them truffles, which pigs love
  • Rule: A Buddhist monastic is not allowed to eat three kinds of "meat" (slaughtered flesh) -- that of a living being that is seen, heard, or suspected of having been killed for one's sake
Did the Buddha pass away from eating meat or mushrooms or by choice?

The precise contents of the Buddha's final meal are not clear, due to variant scriptural traditions and ambiguity over the translation of certain significant terms like sukara-maddava.

The Theravada tradition generally believes that the Buddha was offered "pig's delight" (sukaramaddava) which could be slaughtered pork or some kind of mushroom/food pigs delight in that was offered by the blacksmith Cunda, while the Mahayana tradition believes that the Buddha consumed a truffle or other mushroom [mistaken to be edible].

These differing translations may reflect the different traditional views on Buddhist vegetarianism and the precepts for monastics (monks and nuns) [265] as well as laypersons.

Modern scholars disagree on this topic, arguing both for pig's delight, pig's flesh, or some kind of plant or mushroom that pigs delight in eating [z].

Whatever the case, none of the sources that mention the last meal attribute the Buddha's sickness to the meal itself [266]. But it is widely thought that he suffered severe illness from being unable to safely digest to toxic food, which he directed Cunda to dig a hole and bury rather than offering to any other monastic present at the meal.

As per the "Great Final Nirvana Discourse" (Mahaparinibbana Sutta), after the meal with Cunda the blacksmith, the Buddha and his monastic companions continued to walk until he was too weak to continue.

They stopped at Kushinagar (near modern Gorakphur, India), where Ānanda was directed by the Buddha to prepare a resting place of folded robes between two sala trees in a delightful grove [267, 268].

After announcing to the Monastic Sangha (spiritual community) that he would soon be passing away, reclining into final nirvana, the Buddha personally ordained one last novice into the Monastic Order. His name was Subhadda [267].

He then repeated his final exhortations to the Sangha, which was that when he was no longer present to guide them, the Dhamma and Vinaya (Doctrine and Discipline, Teaching and Training) was to be their guide.

Then he asked if anyone had any doubts about the Teachings, but nobody did [269]. The Buddha waited, satisfied that anyone who would have like to speak or ask any final question had the opportunity to do so.

His final words are reported to have been: "All formations (saṅkhāras, fabrications) are hurtling towards destruction. Strive for the goal with diligence (appamāda)." In Pali this is, "vayadhammā saṅkhārā appamādena sampādethā" [270, 271].

He then entered the eight jhanas as his final meditation forward and then reversing, as verified by a psychic monk near him, reaching what is known as parinirvana ("final nirvana"). He did not "die," for if he had, he would be reborn as all ordinary being are reborn in accordance with their karma.

Rather than being reborn, "the Five Aggregates of physical and mental phenomena clung to as self that constitute a being cease to occur" [272] just as a fire, having exhausted its substrate of fuel goes out. But what is it that really goes out, a being? No, what goes out completely is ignorance.

The Mahaparinibbana Sutta reports that as his final act, the Buddha performed a final meditation of entering the first four material meditative absorptions (jhanas) consecutively, then the four immaterial absorptions, and finally a meditative dwelling known as "the extinction of feeling and perception" (nirodha-samāpatti), which should not be thought of as a permanent "extinction" since many Buddhist meditation practitioners are able to reach this attainment even now throughout life. It is said that only noble ones (those who have attained the stages of enlightenment) are able to reach it and can do so as often as they like as many times as they like. If it were a permanent extinction, no one would be able to do it a second, third, or thousandth time.

Before returning to the fourth absorption (jhana) right at the moment of passing into final nirvana without remainder [273, 268].

Having traveled and taught, the Buddha took his last meal, a sincere offering from a blacksmith named Cunda. But having eaten it, he fell violently ill. Not wishing that Cunda have remorse or misgivings about his offering, the Buddha instructed his personal attendant Ānanda to tell Cunda something.

The meal offering eaten at his place had nothing to do with his passing. Moreover, such an offering was an extraordinary source of merit because it was provided as a last meal for a buddha [262] tantamount to an offering of food to a bodhisatta before his attainment of supreme awakening (buddhahood, arahantship, great-enlightenment).

Bhikkhu Mettanando and Oskar von Hinüber argue that the Buddha passed away due to mesenteric infarction, a symptom of old age, rather than mushroom food poisoning [263, 264]. More

Why I won't eat eggs anymore (sutra)

(Death and Dairy Girl aka Steak and Butter Gal) Fake eggs? Farmer exposes what they are now quietly putting in eggs to increase profits and destroy our health
SUTRA: Oh, Buddha, should we be eating eggs?
Silanisamsa Jataka: "A Good Friend" (Jat 190)

The Buddha told this birth story (jataka) at Jetavana Monastery about a pious lay follower.

One evening, when this faithful disciple came to the bank of the Aciravati River on his way to Jetavana to hear the Buddha, there was no ferryboat at the landing. The ferrymen had all pulled their boats onto the farther shore and had themselves gone to hear the Buddha speak.

However, the disciple's mind was so full of delightful thoughts about the Buddha that even though he walked onto the river, his feet did not sink below the surface: He walked across the water as if on dry land.

But when he noticed the waves as he reached the middle of the river, his ecstasy [absorption] subsided and his feet began to sink.

As soon as he again focused his mind on the qualities of the Buddha, his feet rose [levitated, floated] and he was able to continue walking filled with rapture over the water.

When he arrived at Jetavana, he paid his respects to the Buddha and took a seat respectfully to one side.

"Good layman," the Buddha said to that disciple, "I hope you had no mishap on your way here."

"Venerable sir," the disciple recounted, "while on my way here, I was so absorbed in thoughts of [the excellent qualities of] the Buddha that, when I came to the river, I was able to walk across it as though it were solid."

"Friend," said the Blessed One, "you're not the only one who has been protected in this way. In olden days pious lay followers were shipwrecked mid-ocean and saved themselves by remembering the virtues of the Buddha."

At the man's request, the Buddha told this story of the past:

Long, long ago, at the time of the Buddha Kassapa [3], a lay disciple who had already entered the path [who had become a stream enterer] booked passage on a ship along with one of his friends, a rich barber. The barber's wife asked this disciple to look after her husband.

A week after the ship left port, it sank mid-ocean. The two friends saved themselves by hanging onto a wooden plank until they were cast onto a deserted island.

Killing eggs and birds

Famished, the barber took eggs from nests [the island being a rookery], killed some birds, cooked them, and offered a share of his meal to the follower of the Buddha Kassapa.

"No, thank you," that [partially enlightened disciple] answered, "I'm fine." Then he thought to himself, "In this isolated place, there is no help for us except the Three Gems [the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Enlightened/Noble Sangha]."

As he sat meditating on the Three Gems, a naga king (naga-raja, reptilian, dragon, royal serpent) who had been reborn on that island transformed himself into a beautiful ship filled with the seven precious things [4]. Its three masts were made of sapphire, the planks and anchor of gold, and the ropes of silver.

The helmsman, who was a spirit of the sea, stood on the deck and cried, "Any passengers for Jambudīpa?"

"Yes," the lay disciple answered. "That's where we're bound!"

"Then come onboard," the sea spirit told him.

The layman climbed aboard the beautiful ship and turned to call his friend the barber.

"You may come," the sea spirit said, "but he may not."

"Why not?" the disciple asked.

"He is not a follower of the pure life," answered the sea spirit. "I brought this ship for you, but not for him."

"In that case," the layman announced, "all the gifts I have given, all the virtues I have practiced, all the powers I have developed — I give the fruit of all of them to him!"

"Thank you, Master!" cried the barber.

"Very well," said the sea spirit, "now I can take you both onboard."

The ship carried the two men over the sea and up the Ganges River. After depositing them safely at their home in Baranasi [Varanasi], the sea spirit used his magic power to create enormous wealth for both of them. Then, poising himself mid-air, he instructed the men and their friends: "Keep company with the wise and good."

"If this barber had not been in company with this pious layman, he would have perished in the middle of the ocean." Finally, the sea spirit returned to his own abode, taking the naga king with him.

Having finished this discourse, the Buddha identified the birth tale (jataka) and taught the Dhamma, after which the pious layman in front of him entered the fruit of the second path.

"On that occasion," the Buddha said, "that faithful disciple attained the fruit of the fourth path (arahantship). Sariputta was the naga king, and I myself was the spirit of the sea." Source

Catholic Buddhist Lent: Ash Wednesday

Holy [Hindu style) ashes on Ash Wednesday
Happy Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent for most Christians. Wisdom Quarterly's Mexican Buddhist Crystal Q. is torn between celebrating abstinence, the Five Eight or Ten Precepts, Ten Commandments, and reverting to simplicity. Since ancient Indian times, ashes from the pyre have been used by wandering ascetics as a way of getting clean. (Ashes are absorbent, and when collected from a funerary pyre, they are a strong reminder of this body's mortality). Buddhist David Bowie perhaps quoted the Anglican prayer book best when he sang, "Ashes to ashes, funk to funky, we know Major Tom's a junkie" (David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes").

The tilma of Juan Diego: Our Lady of Guadalupe

Madonna and Child? Kwan Yin
Why would a Mexican be Buddhist? One strong reason in the past was the arrival of Buddhist missionaries from Afghanistan and China before the arrival of Christianity. See American researcher Edward P. Vining and his published findings in An Inglorious Columbus: Or Evidence that Hwui Shan and a Party of Buddhist Monks from Afghanistan Discovered America in the Fifth Century, A.D.) Of course, in modern times Mexican Americans would love Buddhism for its many qualities and perhaps recognizing in the Buddhist Goddess of Compassion Guan Yin a great deal of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

So it's time for a field trip to church (Catholic mass) to see these smearing of cremation ashes across foreheads in Los Angeles. Ananda is eager to see what this is all about. CC took us to the giant Buddhist temple east of Los Angeles in the very Asian San Gabriel Valley, where we enjoyed the Aztec dancers dancing for the Chinese Mahayana Humanist Buddhist crowd. So this explosion/clash of Mexican and European church tradition ought to be a Roman spectacular.

WHAT HAPPENED?
St. Andrew's Church (Pasadena)
Pasadena, California, has many Catholics, and "church" (mass) was packed. The one we attended is beautiful inside, much more beautiful than the usual Holy Roman Empire version. It has a picture of God unlike any other Euro Catholic church building we've ever seen, a massive mural. And next to the God are beautiful devas ("angels"), drawn in gold and very colorful. The many pews were full, and there is a Spanish language service going on in the school building across the street. This church building is on the corner of Fair Oaks and the 134 Freeway, with a big belfry and clock (campanile). Inside, it's like a mausoleum of imported stone. And the attendees are a mix of Hispanics, Italians, Europeans, and a sprinkling of Blacks and Asians. Everyone is very nice and seem repentant as they line up for their pyre ashes, almost certainly incense stick remnants and coal. Wine and gluten crackers are served, if one doesn't mind mixing saliva with everyone else, but it's wiped with a white towel between sips, which is certainly sterilizing through prayer and God's power or the priest's magic. The officiant and his altar boy assistants said some nice words, encouraged people to be good and observe the Ramadan Lenten (Latin Quadragesima, "Fortieth") self-purification practices for the next month and ten days, and to do acts of abstinence, restraint, charity, and kindness, all beautiful sentiments for those who live up to the best of their religion. It is very much like the Buddhist Rains Retreat (Pali Vassa).

Meat eating during the Holy Season?

We agree: Let animals live by not eating them.
Historically, abstinence from meat was a requirement on the days of the Lenten season, including Sunday, the "Lord's Day") [20]. In Eastern Christianity -- including Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholics, Eastern Lutherans, and Oriental Orthodox -- Great Lent is observed continuously without interruption for 40 days starting on Clean Monday and ending on Lazarus Saturday before Holy Week [21, 6] and the big finale of the real New Year's Day, Easter, the first day of spring (time of renewal, when the "son" rises after being as dead as the winter, as explained by Astrotheology). More

In India, cremation ashes are called phool ("flowers"). They are collected from the pyre in a rite-of-passage called asthi sanchayana then dispersed. This signifies redemption of the dead in waters (like those of the "holy" Ganges or Jordan River) considered to be sacred and a closure for the living (Hinduism, Note 28).

Viking berserkers got high first?
Hollywood's Hart is Catholic?
(HP) Christianity erased the truth, but the evidence remains: Viking "berserkers" were said to fight in a trance of unstoppable fury. Some historians believe this rage may have been triggered by psychoactive plants like henbane or hallucinogenic mushrooms. Seeds found in a Viking grave in Denmark suggest these substances were known and possibly used. Christians systematically destroyed much of the old pagan knowledge. This video explores the evidence behind one of Viking history’s strangest questions. More
