I learned Ape language, Ape learned ours

.
What do you mean we're "endangered"?
What is Ape Initiative? Ape Initiative (apeinitiative.org) is the only research center in the world dedicated to the study and conservation of the species most closely related to humans, the endangered bonobo.

Ape Initiative is a federally-recognized non-profit organization.

Just as humans ruined them, we must save them
With a focus on science, education, and outreach, AI's programs enrich the lives of seven bonobos born in captivity and foster a deeper connection between people and the natural world.

Bonobos are an endangered species of African Great Ape with as few as 15,000-20,000 individuals alive in the wild.

Understanding bonobo behavior, and how they interact with one another, is critical if we are going to save them.

Who's smarter, bonobos, chimps, or humans?
That’s why AI developed a scientifically grounded conservation education program for students of all ages. The goal is to inspire the next generation of scientists and educators by promoting scientific literacy and environmental stewardship.
Legal protections and personhood?

Koko the Gorilla's best moments: from Sign Language to meeting Mister Rogers
Dr. Jane Goodall Barbie with friend
Inside Edition(Inside Edition) Koko, the adored gorilla known for her sign language skills, has died at the age of 46. Koko rose to fame in the 1970s when an animal psychologist named Francine "Penny" Patterson taught her to communicate with humans using sign language. She graced the cover of National Geographic twice and understood about 2,000 words of spoken English. The late Robin Williams once called his interaction with Koko "a mind-altering experience." Inside Edition's Keleigh Nealon has more on this story. #InsideEdition (June 21, 2018).

Existing great apes left
Great ape personhood is a movement to extend "personhood" and some legal protections to the non-human members of the great ape family: bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans [1, 2, 3].

Advocates include primatologists Jane Goodall and Dawn Prince-Hughes, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, philosophers Paola Cavalieri and Princeton's Peter Singer, and Harvard Law School legal scholar Steven Wise [4, 5].

Studies by Dr. Goodall revealed that the social and family life of chimps are similar to those of human beings. She describes them as individuals and claims they relate to her as an individual member of the clan.

Shut up, Kanzi! You can't be a person.
Laboratory studies of ape language ability revealed other human traits, as did genetics, and eventually three of the great apes were reclassified as hominids. More

Apes freak out when I speak their language
Xiaomanyc 小马在纽约(Xiaomanyc 小马在纽约) I (Ari) spent weeks secretly studying ape communication, and then I convinced these bonobo apes into thinking I was one of them.

Bonobos are the closest living relatives of human beings, and while attempts have been made to teach them to use human language, it is very rare for human beings to try to communicate with bonobos on their terms using bonobo vocalizations and gestures.

So when I attempted to do this as an innocent visitor to this bonobo research center, the bonobos were genuinely shocked (freaked out), and we bonded pretty hard.

21 million years of kissing (BBC News)

Nazi Nordic ideal of naked apes (Klaus/Barbie)
Humans have only been going at it for less than 5,000 years, according to science: Archaeologists discover evidence of first human kiss -- and it happened 4,500 years ago. However, kissing (smooching, pecking, making out, speaking French) has been going on much, much longer.

The first ever recorded kiss [discovered so far] happened 4,500 years ago, scientists suggest after discovering evidence that puts the event 1,000 years earlier than previously thought. A study published in the journal Science points to evidence of kissing in the ancient Middle East, in early Mesopotamian societies, documented in ancient texts from 2,500 BCE.

  • Does this mean we're breaking up? 😭
Kissing?

(BBC via MSN) Humans do it, monkeys do it, even polar bears do it. And now researchers have reconstructed the evolutionary origins of kissing. Their study suggests that the mouth-on-mouth kiss evolved more than 21 million years ago, and was something that the common ancestor of humans and other great apes probably indulged in.

The same research concluded that Neanderthals may have kissed too – and that [modern] humans and Neanderthals may even have smooched one another. The scientists studied kissing because it presents something of an evolutionary puzzle -- it has no obvious survival or reproductive benefits. Yet, it is something that is seen not just in many human societies, but across the animal kingdom. More

Wild chimps share alcohol, get drunk

Let's get fruit, Jane. - Without Tarzan?
SUMMARY: The use of fermented foods and drinks by humans is so widespread as to be considered ubiquitous, with their use largely linked to dietary benefits and social bonding [123].

The discovery of a molecular adaptation in an alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme that greatly increased ethanol metabolism in the common ancestor of African apes suggests that the incorporation of fermented fruit in the human diet [such as kombucha and fermented relishes and foods] has ancient origins [4].

However, little is known about the inclusion of ethanolic foods in the diet of nonhuman great apes. Here [at Science Direct], we document for the first time the repeated ingestion and sharing of naturally fermented African breadfruit (Treculia africana) with confirmed ethanol (alcohol), by wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) [humans' last common ancestor] in Cantanhez [Forests] National Park, [Southern] Guinea-Bissau.

Widespread plant food sharing in great apes and the recent confirmation of ethanol presence in diverse fruit species [5] suggest the sharing, and dietary incorporation, of ethanol-containing foods is extensive and may have played a long-standing role in hominoid societies.

The origin of language in humans

The origins of language
(History with Kayleigh) Premiered March 17, 2025: Researching the origins of language, can we pinpoint when language first emerged? What do other great apes reveal about their use of language, and how does that tie into our own evolution and development of language? Let's find out. SPONSOR: AirLearn now: airlearn.onelink.me...
  • What's the oldest language in the world? The Tamil language from the Buddhist island of Sri Lanka (aka Eelam, the land of the Tamil Tigers, for which the longest civil war in Asia was fought), Southern India (Tamil Nadu), and Singapore (though surely Sanskrit must be much older than that)

The coup to overthrow the US government by racists in an armed overthrow

"American Coup: Wilmington 1898": Film examines massacre when racists overthrew multiracial US government
Attack Negroes then blame them?
(Democracy Now!) Nov. 12, 2024: American Coup: Wilmington 1898 premieres tonight on PBS and investigates the only successful [January 6th style] insurrection conducted against a U.S. government.

Self-described white supremacist residents stoked fears of "Negro Rule" then carried out a deadly massacre in Wilmington, North Carolina.

MLK, Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh
Their aim was to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow the city's democratically elected, Reconstruction-era multiracial government, paving the way for the implementation of Jim Crow laws just two years later.

DN! features excerpts from the documentary and speaks to Co-Director Yoruba Richen, who explains how the insurrection was planned and carried out, and how the filmmakers worked to track down the descendants of both perpetrators and victims, whose voices are featured in the film.

World Series: LA Dodgers BEAT NY Yanks

VIDEO: Livestream of video free on YouTube until MLB complained right after the game finished

Planet of the Apes, devolving (Bizarro)
Hooray for Buddhist Japan and Los Angeles, as Asian fans are more excited about this Dodgers' win than the diehards who just lost Mexican legend Fernando Valenzuela on the eve of his birthday.

Shohei "Show Me The Money" Ohtani injured himself (shoulder subluxation, meaning he pulled it and it popped back), trying to steal a base to pull off this great win against the Less Coast (East), proving that the West Coast is the Best Coast, if rappers are to be believed.
It's mayhem on the streets of the City of Lost Angels as riots begin to form in some parts of the megalopolis. Police prepared in advance to over-police the heck out of sports fans who get too rowdy, as Israel rejoices that there is yet another distraction from their ongoing and expanding genocide.

Israeli is ethnically cleansing the Palestinians off land it stole with the secret dream being revealed of a future "Greater Israel," a Jewish empire (in alliance with Western powers, weapons, geopolitical influence, resource extraction, and full spectrum dominance like the colonial British rulers dreamed of exercising) that expands into Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, and Iran, with Egypt ceding even more land for Israel' settler colonial project of Ashkenazi (European) Jews in the Middle East.

PM/Dictator Bibi Netanyahu's reign of terror can continue undisturbed until the U.S. election is settled, which will not be for weeks or months, until the transfer of power and installation of Pres. Vance, the ultimate winner in all this.

The original Planet of the Apes tried to warn us: If "religion is the opiate of the masses," sport is the stimulant, the caffeine fiending to meth devouring mover and shaker of the sheeple. Therefore, let us all chant our unofficial national mantra:

"Go our side! Down with the other side! Hooray! USA, USA, USA!!!" (lol)

All hail New York, for the last shall be the first in the unfolding of deeds and their repercussions as they cycle on endlessly in this continued-wandering-on called samsara.

Oh thoughtless mortals! ever blind to fate,
Too soon dejected, and too soon elate!
Sudden, these honors shall be snatch'd away,
And curs'd for ever this victorious day.

Females better at finding Sasquatch

A 2012 video that allegedly captures an elusive Sasquatch creature (Buddhist rakshasa, yakkha, yakshi, yeti) created a stir online among Bigfoot trackers. While the "monster" in the video footage only makes a brief appearance, it is the very human reaction of the witness that suggests this was likely a real encounter. Upon seeing the semi-human ogre, the filmmaker promptly crashes his ATV into the bushes then quickly turns around to flee from the scene. See more on the story at ABC News.

.
Founder Jen Kruse
Men are so predictable, even boogeymen. Jen Kruse was told by a seasoned cryptid researcher that she would have better luck with an all-female crew that included no males, no dogs, and no guns. These creatures can smell from miles away. And what do they like the smell of? Women. In that sense they're not so different from Al Pacino. Kruse recruited women but not just any women. She got psychic sensitives with intuition and the ability to remote view, abilities she has. The results were successful: She Squatchers.

Bigfoot compilation, eyewitness commentary

(Adam K. Made Me Watch This!) April 24, 2024: BLUE RIDGE. This Sasquatch research compilation is of purported cryptid evidence with eyewitnesses Rich Germeau and Mike Wooley. Viewers are treated to more video and audio evidence than expected. She-Squatchers: all-female research team
Come into the woods to visit us, Ladies. We have been put here on this prison planet.

Jena Grover, She-Squatchers Team Member
SheSquatchers.com came together thanks to Native American Jen Kruse. In 2015 she decided to begin an "all-female Bigfoot experiment" as the Midwest's first all-female Bigfoot research team.

Kruse founded the team after receiving a suggestion from cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, who shared his idea. The successful recipe for interacting with Sasquatch creatures is to send only females into the woods without men, dogs, or guns.

Tammy Treichel
She-Squatchers is more women in the woods. Members are psychic women, utilizing extrasensory perception in the search. Team leader Jen Kruse is a missing persons psychic medium and remote viewer. Her female teammates, Jena Grover and Tammy Treichel, are also gifted intuitives as well as adventurous woodswomen. They have gone through scary and amazing experiences, collecting evidence along the way. The team is based in Minnesota but travels coast to coast, searching for Bigfoot and sharing what they have found.
The best video footage never goes viral
Histories of "Bigfoot" creatures are very old.
Such footage is not allowed to. Bad evidence that can be debunked are promoted to discredit the whole process. Bigfoot hunters do not control the algorithm. Who does? They are the "they" to ask. Of course, they'll only say, "It's impersonal, based on an algorithm, pure data" that no one tampers with? You bet it gets tampered with all of the time. What else would be the use of it for them to control the narrative and public opinion? It's a common misconception that IF any such footage were any good, why wouldn’t it be famous yet? It’s a logical fallacy. Thinking that the best footage would be “advertised” or advanced by science or by a journalist working for the system is silly. It is in their best interest to keep everyone in the dark.

US gov't just released terrifying Bigfoot photos

(Eternity) May 3, 2024: For centuries, tales of Bigfoot have captivated the imaginations of people around the world. From the dense forests of North America to the remote mountains of Asia's Himalayas, reports of encounters with these elusive creatures have persisted, shrouded in speculation and lore.

Bigfoot photos were sanctioned by the authorities who try to deny the existence of the mysterious creature. But many are certain government holds secrets about Bigfoot they've kept hidden from us.

Join Eternity to uncover the truth behind some of the most shocking Bigfoot photos that were leaked by the government.

Meet Mark Dorth, a Bigfoot investigator from Ohio who's been on the hunt for Sasquatch for the past 30 years. During his quest, he's gathered a collection of evidence, including footprints, audio recordings, and even had a firsthand encounter that sparked his research.

Legend has it that while exploring an old strip mine in search of badger dens, Dorth was followed out by something that soon revealed itself to be a towering, bipedal, hairy creature. The thought of an 8-foot tall, hairy beast roaming the woods gives the shivers, let alone encountering one in a cave unexpectedly.

The Chimpanzee Civil War of 1974 (video)

Sheldon S., CC Liu, Pfc. Sandoval (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The insanity of the Gombe Chimpanzee War
(National Park Diaries) Aug. 21, 2023: GOMBE NATIONAL PARK The Gombe Chimpanzee War was an intergroup conflict between two chimpanzee communities in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, Africa.

Prior to this conflict being observed, it was thought that chimpanzees were largely peaceful creatures and vegetarians. But Jane Goodall and other researchers soon opened up a whole new world of chimpanzee conflict and social dynamics with their observations of this conflict.

It's a fascinating look at the brutality of the natural world and perhaps provides an opportunity to reflect on our human capacity for violence as well.

Who's eating our cousins the Bonobos?

Terese Hart, bonoboincongo.com (National Geo, Oct. 14, 2012; Wisdom Quarterly
A dehydrated and stressed baby bonobo that was abandoned in the sun outside the kitchen where his mother is being grilled and devoured. How can anyone justify doing this to a great ape that is 99.6% us? This mother and child had a life living free in the wild until she was shot by poachers (Terese Hart/bonoboincongo.com).
.
Why are We Eating Bonobos? Can We Save Africa’s Vast Wildernesses from Destruction?
Bonobo in "heavenly sleep" (Terese Hart)
Baby bonobo orphans are pouring into primate sanctuaries across central Africa as thousands of adults are being killed, smoked, and bundled with monkeys, pangolins, small antelope, and bush pigs for sale in distant "bushmeat" markets.

We are about to reach a tipping point in Africa beyond which it is going to be very hard to save the last populations of Africa’s most enigmatic species like the bonobo, mountain gorilla, lion, wild dog, giraffe, rhino, elephant, and cheetah.

Years of civil war, unrest, and corruption have broken the link for many people who now live in cities and have evolved a new belief system, together with their new consumption habits. Bonobo populations have declined significantly due to the bushmeat trade in recent years.

People are now eating them, so we need to look at what this represents in regard to our future in Africa. Ongoing anti-poaching efforts in source countries have yielded many successes, and many more people are trying to keep bonobos and other wildlife safe within protected areas. Forests and river basins are too vast, while  resources and staff are too few for enforcement of new laws to be effective in slowing the erosion of Africa’s natural heritage.

We are just years away from that terrible morning when we all open our eyes and realize that we did not do enough when we could have and that now there was nothing left to save or do. As of today, we still have something to save and we had better get out there... More
