It’s sometimes claimed that, measuring by orders of magnitude, humans are midway in scale between subatomic particles and the observable universe.
(Or, to put it another way, we fall halfway between nothing and everything.) [Or, to put it yet another way, this is a middle world between heaven and heck, between glory and oblivion, light and shadow, the deva worlds and hellish narakas.]
Whether or not this claim is strictly true, it’s arresting and resonant in all sorts of ways. [To think that the only difference between the two destinations is karma is hard to accept, but the Buddha was a Karmavadin, a "Teacher of Karma," for just that reason; it's not obvious, and it needs to be known.]
Each of our lives might feel like a whole universe – surpassingly important and infinite in scope – and yet from another perspective, each is utterly trivial and ephemeral.
It's almost as if Douglas Adams, writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series), was exactly right in suggesting that the worst thing that could possibly happen to someone is being put in the TOTAL PERSPECTIVE VORTEX:
It’s an impossible paradox, this state of having both a surplus and redundancy of value, and it brings with it certain creative and moral opportunities.
I’m interested in how these opportunities might be explored in fiction, how scale can defamiliarize human life, and indeed all life, reminding us of the infinitesimal nature of its expanse and the improbability and wonder of its existence.
In each of my novels, and especially In Ascension, I have placed non-intuitive spatial and temporal perspectives next to the more mundane concerns of my characters.
Telescopes and microscopes recur, as do deep time, evolution, and the life cycles of parasites and viruses.
Alongside this, characters are eating, walking between rooms, anxiously going over circular thoughts, worried about their families, or bored.
The lens zooms in and out from “domestic” to “alien” scenes. I’m not doing this to mock or belittle my characters, but rather to try to evoke something of that paradoxical quality in which we are both infinite and infinitesimal, equally close to something very large and very small.
I’ve always been drawn to fiction that attempts this. When scenes with very different perspectives collide, the effect can be startling, exhilarating, unforgettable.
Who's afraid of V. Woolf?
My favorite example is in Virginia Woolf’s 1927 novel To the Lighthouse, which I first read as a teenager. In the 134 pages of its opening part, “The Window,” Woolf gives us, through the character Mrs. Ramsay, a consciousness so luminous it seems impossible to define or limit.
In the following part, “Time Passes,” the perspective undergoes a radical shift. The house is empty, the people long gone; Mrs. Ramsay, we are informed in two short lines enclosed between brackets, like an afterthought, is dead.
I will never forget the shock and thrill of first reading this. I didn't realize fiction could do this; Woolf’s audacity and ambition took my breath away.
She had shown, tragically, the power and precarity of every consciousness. It’s a truism that cannot be repeated enough: Life feels infinite, and it’s gone in a second.
Much of Woolf’s fiction is interested in this dissonance, and it is not coincidental that, as well as experiencing both world wars, she lived through radical advances in telescopic power that changed all understanding of the size of the universe.
And it should be no surprise – though it apparently still is to many people – that Woolf was not just an avid reader of astronomy books and science fiction, but saw herself engaged in a lifelong project of writing that bore comparison to the most ambitious works of sci-fi.

The protagonist of In Ascension, Leigh Hasenbosch, is a microbiologist who travels into deep space. She experiences not only astonishment at seeing the whole Earth, but dejection at seeing the planet disappear.
Anthropocentrism -- unarguably the default perspective in English language fiction -- has never looked so absurd. [That is the idea that Earthling humans are the center or some significant part of the universe.]
Approaching the Oort cloud, she is aware of the other orders of life around her, from algal food stocks to the colonies of bacteria travelling between her and the other crew.
Beyond the composite walls of the ship, there is nothing. Since childhood, after an epiphany while almost drowning, Leigh has pursued the origins of life, absorbed by the theory of symbiogenesisand struck by its improbability.
It is all but impossible life exists, and yet it is here. At the same time, she interrogates her own childhood and the formative influences on the person she has become.
Her life and work gather around this ambiguous pursuit of origins. Which scale, then, is “correct”? Which story is she really invested in -- the universal or the personal?
The answer, of course, is both. For neither answer alone can be sufficient.

Scientists discover planets more habitable than Earth

(Destiny) About 30 years ago, we didn’t have any "scientific" proof of a planet outside our solar system.
Today, thanks to advances in technology and scientific research, we've officially discovered over 5,300 exoplanets -- alien worlds that are out there waiting to be explored [and conquered and environmentally ruined by us].
At first, these discoveries mostly involved large gas giants, but as science's capabilities have expanded, we've started to uncover smaller, Earth-like exoplanets.

A viewer watching this past weekend's "successful" SpaceX launch online spotted what a mouse crawling along the rocket as it allegedly soared at 17,000 MPH into space.
"Experts," who cannot now pull the footage from the internet and reshoot the "launch" in another soundstage, say the anomaly probably wasn't really a hitchhiking rat or mouse with a big tail, scurrying back and forth, as the fans blew on the Mylar metallic curtain and flame burned in the freezing empty vacuum of space near the red-hot thruster rocket.

The moment was noticed by a Pennsylvania man, who had the presence of mind to promptly capture the scene and post it to his Twitter account, which should be shut down soon if people don't buy the "expert" opinion saying our eyes are not seeing what they're clearly seeing.

The footage ha gone viral on social media, quickly amassing over a million views. In the video a curious rat or mouse from Hawthorne or Hollywood can clearly be seen scurrying around the base of the rocket. We hear the poster declare, "I don't care what you say, that is a mouse!" Soundstages, large warehouse type buildings with electrical equipment, are notorious for their rodent infestations.
The impossible presence of the creature outside the craft has given rise to speculations that the entire space flight was an elaborate hoax after the launch of some kind of rocket.
That's not a stage light over a black curtain.
Space enthusiasts are trying to promote a ridiculous cover-up explanation for the embarrassing sight, like those of bubbles in space (because they are filmed in pools in front of green screens to imitate zero gravity), the use of harnesses in the ISS (International Space Station) to pretend that they are flying around in low earth orbit freed of gravity, and other anomalies.
Maybe that rodent is a piece of frozen liquid oxygen that was vented just at the right moment, coming out of the rocket engine through a leak on its glorious journey to the ISS.

The Mayan calendar ends? Don't all calendars end? Does the world end with them? What happens at the end of our Gregorian calendar? Preparing to live starts bymeditating on death. For such meditation inspires in us a sense of spiritual urgency.
Time is short if we think it's short. Or the moment (the now) extends to encompass anything, any event, any eventuality.
Sometimes it is wise to make it feel short. The Buddha spoke of an ancient teacher who taught that meditators should reflect on life as being like a piece of meat dropped on a hot skillet, or like a drop of dew on a blade of grass, like a line drawn on water, or some such -- but in those days so long ago, the Buddha emphasizes, the human lifespan was much longer. What to say of our time and our need to make the best use of our time?

A killer with a drawn sword is standing just behind. Straighten the spine and meditate. Life is short, death is long, meditate. Before long this body will lie by the wayside like a useless log.
If such reflection leads to excessive worry and an unsettled feeling, then it is doing more harm than good. We want enough urgency to begin our cultivation, our development, our refinement or "evolution," but not so much that we are inundated by a sense of overwhelm, futility, or lack of hope.
We have time, BUT what time do we have? We have the same time we always had, just now. We have now. We can begin now, and nothing else matters. If we delay, we throw the only time we have away.
A cosmopolitan man lost deep in the boondocks asked a local simpleton, "Hey, friend, how do I get into town?" "You can do it," the simpleton replied, "I just wouldn't start from here."
We may not feel our starting point is any place to set out from, but it's all we have. We have to start right where we are. Where else would we start? Wherever we are, the real question is, When will we start? Even then it will be now, so why would we delay and make it harder?
Billions of potentially habitable planets may exist within our galaxy, the Milky Way, raising new prospects that life could exist near Earth, a study has found.
