WHAT HAPPENED?

More similarities than differences

People gathered in silence from all over Los Angeles, guitars in hand. At 10:00 there was group singing of traditional hymn from the hymnal book with old Quaker and Shaker songs, accompanied by piano and violin. Meanwhile, everyone was setting up the vegan potluck. "Service" convened, which means a silent meditation punctuated by anyone who wants to stand up and say something, moved by "spirit," as it occurs to them. An hour later, there are announcements, joys and sorrows, children coming in to talk about what they've been doing outside or in the schoolroom. Then the socializing started with a storm and a self-serve line of many delicious treats. An hour later, the Talent Show began at the mic: stand up comedy, singing, poetry, guitar, drums, Irish fiddlers, a ballet recital, kids doing the "peace train" accompanied by Cat Stevens' hit song, lots of laughs, fun, and creativity.

My life is an intersection of these religions. I was born a Quaker [referred to as a "Friend"], to Quaker parents with Quaker grandparents and great-grandparents. I attended Friends schools through college. I sat in many meetings for [silent] worship [waiting on the spirit to move me and fellow parishioners]. I have always been proud to be a Quaker.

I found Buddhism later in life, when I was 27 years old. I was looking for a tonic for depression. I found Buddhist philosophy and writing soothing to my condition. I liked that Buddhism talked about meditation as a remedy to suffering.

Even though I had been meditating [listening, sitting in receptive silence, being move by the presence of a Godly Great Spirit] all of my life in Quaker meetings, I had always struggled with how to do it.

As a child, meeting for worship [which for unprogrammed Quakers means no priest, preacher, pastor, or person in charge, just Friends sitting in silence punctuated by anyone who wants to stand up and speak as they are moved to do] was somewhere between difficult and excruciatingly painful.

Quakers get monkey mind?

[Monkey Mind:] To amuse myself, I would count things. I would count people with glasses. I would count ceiling tiles. I would count the seconds on my watch. I would welcome any spoken message that would break up the monotony of the silence. I would welcome the break of meeting so I could talk and run around again.

When I learned to meditate in the Buddhist style, I learned to keep my awareness focused by counting my breaths. I learned to hold my body still while I focused my mind [heart]. I found a specific place to put my hands.

In meditation, I was relieved of the burden of being moved by the Spirit to speak and say something spiritually profound.

Learning Buddhist meditation techniques taught me how to sit in Quaker meeting. Through all those years of Quaker upbringing and Quaker education, I had somehow missed that fundamental teaching.

The enso or Zen zero of stillness

In my Zen Buddhist practice, I sat many hours of meditation. I did sitting meditation, walking meditation, chanting meditation, bowing meditation, eating meditation [mindfulness], tea-drinking meditation, and listening meditation. I went on a retreat to the Detroit Zen Center and did cooking meditation, cleaning meditation, weeding meditation, and hours and hours of sitting meditation.

All that meditation was not necessarily peaceful or easy as I did it. What I found is that the rest of my days became more peaceful and easier to manage. The meditation worked. It created peace. More: The Zen of Quakerism

(Eli from Russia) REPUBLIC OF KALMYKIA. Four hundred years ago the descendants of Mongolian Oirats (Kalmyks) migrated to Europe. They created the Kalmyk Khanate, which lasted from 1635 to 1779, in the south of the European portion of Russia's massive territory. Today they form the majority in Kalmykia, located on the Kalmyk Steppe, on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. They are the only traditionally Buddhist people located in Europe, and they herd and ride Bactrian camels. This place, cold as it feels with the windchill, has burning water springs.

World's largest gold deposit found, worth over US $80 billion

(Nature) A deposit of high-quality gold ore containing around 1,000 metric tons (1,100 US tons) of the precious metal has been discovered in central China, according to Chinese state media.

Valued at approximately 600 billion yuan or U.S. 83 billion dollars, the discovery could be considered the largest and most lucrative reservoir of gold ever uncovered, surpassing the 900 metric tons estimated to lie within the mother of all gold reserves, South Deep mine in South Africa.

• What kind of story suppression is this? A mere $83 billion worth of gold? There was WAY more gold or found in Uganda in 2022: 31 million tonnes of ore -- with an estimated 320,000 tonnes of extractable pure gold:
• If one troy ounce is worth $2,700.00 then 320,000 tonnes, according to my handheld calculator, would today be worth $[ERROR], a number so high we have to hire a mathematician to calculate it.
• How many ounces in a ton of gold? The answer is a metric tonne, which is 32,150.7 troy ounces. So multiply that by $2,7000, and then do it 319,000 more times. It equals: $86,806,890 + $27,691,397,910,000 = That, in our innumerate opinion, equals about 27 to 28 trillion dollars, yes? Or $27,778,204,800,000 to be exact. So what in the world is a mere $83 billion (from 1,100 metric tons) in China? It's not a fraction worth mentioning, except that China is good to go at extracting right now. By our calculation, 1,000 metric tons would be worth $86,806,890,000 (=1,000 x 32,150.7 x $2,700).

The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province announced the detection of 40 gold veins within a depth of 1.2 miles (2 kms) in the northeast Hunan county of Pingjiang.

These alone were thought to contain 300 metric tons of gold, with 3D modeling suggesting additional reserves may be found to a depth of 3 kms.

The massive find was made in Pingjiang County, well within undisputed Chinese territory. "Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold," says bureau prospector Chen Rulin.

Core samples suggest every metric ton of ore could contain as much as 138 grams (nearly 5 ounces) of gold – an extraordinary level of quality considering ore excavated from underground mines is considered high grade if it contains more than 8 grams.

China already dominates the world's gold market with reserves considered to be in excess of 2,000 tons earlier in 2024, its mining industry contributing around 10 percent of the global output.

How can we be sure NDEs are real?

Religion is a mess. Who believes?

We can hear many things, form concepts, adopt beliefs, but until we know-and-see for ourselves, we're relying on undependable things. The path to awakening has a phase of remembering our countless past lives. What are those memories? When one remembers them in all their details and sees trends and lessons lived over many lives in many places, not just this world, one gains a whole different view of life and comes to appreciate the need to make an end of rebirth if one would make an end of all suffering once and for all.

Life is a game, and everyone can win!

It does not much matter that we die because we are sure to live again again and again, in an unending cycle. How can we step off the carousel and awaken to the utmost? That is what the Buddha's Teaching, or Dharma, is for. In the meantime, an NDE characteristically has the consequence of losing all fear of death? How can that be? It's the scariest thing, isn't it? No, there are far scarier things, and rebirth is one of them. But most of us cannot imagine anything else.
