Love of Pistis Sophia: Faith-Wisdom

(Sacred Knowledge) Pistis Sophia | Forgotten Gospel of Soul’s Fall and Divine Return, April 2025

Pistis Sophia
(Koine Greek Πίστις Σοφία) is a Gnostic text discovered in 1773 [1], possibly written between the 3rd [2] and 4th centuries AD [3].

The existing manuscript, which some scholars place in the late 4th century [4], relates one Gnostic group's teachings of the transfigured Jesus to the assembled disciples, including his mother Mary, Mary Magdalene [his chief disciple], and Martha.
  • (In this context, "transfigured" refers to Jesus after his death and resurrection, not the event during his life where he spoke to appearances of Moses and Elijah on a mountain).
In this Gnostic text, the risen Jesus had spent 11 years speaking with his disciples, teaching them only the lower mysteries.

After 11 years, he receives his true garment and is able to reveal the higher mysteries revered by this group. The prized mysteries relate to complex cosmologies and knowledge necessary for the soul to reach the highest divine realms. More

Happy Halfway Day: passion to profit

Have others ever felt a passion -- a sense of urgency -- to do what is profitable, what is wholesome and useful toward liberation? If one, there is an accompanying feeling that one is not doing nearly enough to make reasonable progress toward the goal. How much time has passed, and how much time will pass, before we get on the ball? "Long enough, wanderers," the Buddha frequently said, "has it been that we have wandered on in this round (samsara) -- long enough to have become dispassionate toward all formations."

Lord Time clips Cupid's wings
(TOI) It’s July 2nd. You’re sipping ice water, wondering where [half] the year went, maybe even scrolling photos thinking, Didn’t we just celebrate New Year’s? Suddenly, someone says, “Hey, you know today is exactly halfway through the year?”

Wait, what? Yep. July 2nd isn’t just another random summer day stuck between fireworks and a cousin’s birthday party. It’s Halfway Day — the dead-center midpoint of the year.

Half of 2025 is behind us. The other half? Still ahead, ready to be claimed [if we seize the day, or squandered if we worry about Trump and other corrupt politicians advancing Project 2025].

Whether feeling super accomplished or lowkey behind on every goal made back in January, this little calendar milestone is a gentle nudge from the universe to pause, [meditate like you thought you would], reflect, and maybe even restart. More
Why would anyone meditate?

Time keeps on ticking, ticking...How can I gain energy to make effort in meditation?

Overcoming complacency in meditation

Masturbation abstinence online (NPR)

There's a thriving landscape of social media content, online forums, and entrepreneurs dedicated to helping men settle and sublimate the urge to masturbate to online porn (Joe Gough/NPR).
.
Masturbation abstinence is popular online. Doctors and therapists are worried
(Lisa Hagen/NPR) "Nothing scares me. Nothing hurts me anymore," a young YouTuber (shown below) tells the camera as snowflakes cut across the frame. He is shirtless in a Michigan January, he tells viewers, to make a point about embracing discomfort in order to become a great, powerful man.

The YouTuber, who goes by the handle iamLucid, tells the camera he can stand the below-freezing temperature because he has been taking cold showers every day and, crucially, hasn't masturbated to pornography in a year.

"That's the most beta thing you can do. That's the weakest thing any man can do," he says.

The video is part of a thriving online landscape dedicated to helping men settle and sublimate the urge to masturbate.

Think about sex.
More than two decades of growing internet use has surfaced fears about the social and psychological impacts of nearly unfettered access to pornography. But many researchers and sex therapists worry that the online communities that have formed in response to these fears often endorse inaccurate medical information, exacerbate mental health problems and, in some cases, overlap with extremist and hate groups.

There are many variations on how and why members of these communities choose to abstain from masturbation. One of the central concepts in these communities is known as "nofap," a play on an onomatopoeic word for masturbation popularized on the notorious 4chan message boards.

The term "nofap" has come to encompass a set of unproven claims that not masturbating confers social and health benefits.
  • Masturbation abstinence communities emerged alongside the "manosphere," a collection of online spaces dedicated to the idea that males and masculinity are under threat from some forms of feminism.
Masturbation out of the manosphere (Joe Gough)
There's a large and active forum on Reddit that uses the name, as well as a company called NoFap LLC (nofap.com), which offers support groups for a fee and runs a popular forum on its website. But that company is just one part of a far larger community.

Others, including self-styled coaches, also use the term. They offer advice, services, and sometimes treatment programs to those struggling to reach their goal of not masturbating.

While some figures in this space are religious, most frame their advice as science-based forms of self-improvement or as a cure for pornography addiction, a popular concept that's disputed by scientists and researchers who study sexuality.
  • [Anyone who thinks "sex addiction" is make believe, go to a Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting and hear the depravity, compulsion, and inability to resist having sex in spite of major negative life consequences like prosecution, prison sentences, diseases (STIs, STDs, VDs), loss of family, relationships, self-control... This is much deeper than horniness or hormones. One sets off down a course having no idea about the pitfalls and traps. Drugs (and other dopamine hits) are almost sure to become part of the web that traps one.]

Measuring the online and offline influence of nofap content is difficult. A 2022 study in the International Journal of Impotence Research by a group of urologists who studied social media content found "semen retention" and its related hashtags to be the most popular men's health topic on TikTok and Instagram.

Unlike every other men's health topic they studied, none of the semen retention posts were coming from doctors.

What will no longer be censored in the future?
For those who believe they may be addicted to porn, the official NoFap LLC website suggests no masturbation for 90 days, during which the brain supposedly reboots like a computer.

Other claimed benefits of avoiding masturbation may include "superpowers," like more confidence and more romantic interest from women.

NoFap LLC says it is not anti-masturbation and it's not anti-porn, and today its creator says it is a peer-support group for people with problematic pornography use.

BEWARE: Monsters in the woods have needs, too.

"I have seen claims on social media saying that semen retention can boost your testosterone levels, cure erectile dysfunction, make you more manly, make you stronger, cure depression, make you more successful, clear your skin," says Ashley Winter, a urologist who has been publicly critical of nofap ideas. Masturbation is bad karma?
WISDOM QUARTERLY
You can't tell me what to do, you're not my father
How is the intentional emission of semen achieved? It is not strictly physical. The mental component, relying as it does on the mental defilements (most broadly stated as lust, aversion/fear, and delusion), reinforces lust, desire, craving, obsession, grasping, clinging, desperation, and one fails to see the harm done to oneself, the harm to others, and the harm to both (to the greater community and world). Youths go from porn viewing to acting out in ways they would not have if not exposed to such material.
  • How do we know it's unskillful, unwholesome. "bad" karma? We know because of the definition of unskillful karma: deeds (actions of the body, speech, or mind) that are rooted in the three unwholesome roots: desire (greed, craving, lust), aversion (hate, disliking, fear), and delusion (wrong view, confusion, ignorance). We also know by the results -- suffering, disappointment, pain, not getting what one wants, getting what one does not want, lack of ever being fulfilled.
The symptoms may be mild -- resentment, anger, jealousy, envy, judgments against females -- or graduate to objectification, aggression, insensitivity, cruelty, treating people as less than human. It's a slippery slope. Who can think it's innocent? One may not realize how harmful it is or how deeply it wounds the psyche, but manipulation by the sex industry and sex traffickers is all part of it. Welcome to the world of Epstein, Hollywood, Diddy, porn stars, rap stars, high finance, political corruption, shame, humiliation, and the court system. And all for what? A bone with little blood smeared on it, remnants of flesh, and marrow gnawed on as if it could ever satisfy the hunger and thirst (lust and craving) it engenders. It's a trap. And perhaps only those who fall in ever realize it.

50s TV predicted bald Con Man Trump

An energetic liar can confuse, mislead, and deceive people. Yet, in many cases, that same liar is unable to reverse the deception. Hoodwinked people embrace their misperceptions.

A Con Man Named Trump

Trump's not bald...except for the toupee on top.
(Ace1000ks1975)  An American Western filmed in the 1950s just coincidentally speaks of a man named "Trump" coming to town to fleece everyone of their money by scaring them that if they don't the world is going to end?
What can protesters do to unmask this con man?
He's going to build a "wall" to protect everyone, if they just believe and give him the money. They can't arrest him, they can't make any charge stick, he has freedom of speech to cheat people.

“It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they’ve been fooled,” observed Mark Twain, or at least it was attributed to him and stuck (Quote Investigator).

Awful guy, a symptom of our lying dirty politics
And the moral to the story is, “Elect a clown, expect a circus.” The disruptor, the Swamp drainer, the jailer who locks 'em up, all lies. But it isn't enough he lied before, the "town" panics and rallies to elect him again, not that we the people really elect anybody.

Ex-Pres. DJ Trump is a lying liar who lies.
Candidates are vetted and selected. He knows it and wants to be a dictator so as to not be locked up. Kamala is little better, so follow the fear. Either way, another Yalie (like Skull 'n Bones' own G.W. Bush) will be sitting in the Oval Office re-reading Hillbilly Elegy by the time they're trying to implement Project 2025.

Is there a solution?
Not bald? Here the wind peels off old Trump's toupee, a glued-on hairpiece for the top.
.
From D to D: for Liberation
The scenario this American Western, some 1950s' TV show drama, lays out was also explored in The Twilight Zone when a neighborhood block turns on itself because of malicious gossip and rumors. Words can be very dangerous things, and our mouths are like loaded guns. Just ask Hitler, and if he's not available, Trump can probably answer. Not that he'll tell the truth. Why start now. Why would he ever, even in court? So maybe Gene Sharp's book From Dictatorship to Democracy: A Conceptual Framework for Liberation, which came up as the Occupy Movement was being systematically undermined, would be good for the nation to read.

You will respect my authority or...
This short, pithy, inspiring, and extraordinarily clear book is a guide to overthrowing dictatorships by nonviolent means. It lists 198 specific methods to consider: sit-ins, popular nonobedience, selective strikes, withdrawal of bank deposits, revenue refusal, walkouts, silence, hunger strikes... It is a remarkable work that made Sharp into the world's most effective and sought-after analyst of resistance to authoritarian regimes. Or we could riot in the streets after Nov. 5th, which is exactly what they're hoping, expecting, and prepared for. More

Kamala's last gasp? Trump's terrible debt

Watch Kamala shut up MAGA heckler in viral takedown
(Jack Cocchiarella) Oct. 30, 2024: Pro-Harris political commentator Jack Cocchiarella, a Democrat, reacts to candidate VP Harris shutting down a MAGA heckler during her rally in North Carolina. Indeed, Killer K may swallow, but Trump swallows, regurgitates, and drinks it again. Prof. Richard Reich explains:

How Trump killed every business he touched (and took the US into worse debt)
(Robert Reich) Oct. 8, 2024: Let’s set the record straight: Trump is not a “successful businessman.” That's a myth built up for reality TV thanks to public relations. He is, objectively, a business failure. Here's the evidence.

Faith Quarterly: Disbelief in Jesus Christ

From Holy to Heretic | Why I left Christianity
C'mon, Kristi, thou shalt submit.
(Kristi Burke) I was born and raised in the Southern Baptist Church and spent my childhood and teen years devoting myself to what I believed to be the good mission of Jesus Christ.

After years of devotion and Bible study, I realized that I no longer had any good reason to believe. I lost nearly everything I once knew and loved to carve out my most authentic path... But it was worth it.

Freewill? I control your life, not you!
I hope that by sharing my story I can bring some comfort, clarity, or validation to others out there who are struggling with their beliefs, too.

Please keep in mind that everything I say here is my subjective experience and opinion. It is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist, Evangelical, conservative Christian ideologies from an ex-Christian perspective. I know what I'm talking about, and there are Christians who will understand.

Suck it up, Buttercup! Jojo in the Dojo

How could this psychotic Nazi coach be so mean to little princess Jojo Siwa with the mom looking on in silence? Is this any way to raise a healthy dancer or pop idol? It is the way of Kali, Durga, and ferocity. There has to be a better way to enter the place of the way to discover the Tao of Self-Development.

Punk: clumsy Dancing Shiv' (skanking)
(WQ) The dojo ("the place of the way") is a training center, do or tao being "the way of," and the other portion of the word being the suggested way. Chado is "the Way of Tea" (cha or chai being tea) and taekwondo is "the way of striking with foot and hand," a martial art (method of combat). The Way of the Buddha could be the mantra Buddho, the Ennobling Eightfold Path, rather than the martial arts of Japanese budō (wu-dō) or "Way of War." And Play-Doh (a brand name form of "play dough," the Way of Play") might be a good name for dancing, if dancing weren't taken so very seriously by aspiring dancers. Playdo might be the best name for "the Way of Meditation," chan'do, "the Way of the Way," the Way of Jhana, chan, dhyana, or Zen (which is just the Japanese pronunciation of the Pali word jhana or "meditative absorption").

Meditation? Start with the mantra "Buddho"
Buddho by Phra Ajahn Thate Desaransi, American Theravada Buddhist monk Ven. Thanissaro (trans) from accesstoinsight.org edited by Wisdom Quarterly
.
The Buddha inspired great confidence

When one goes to study meditation with any group or teacher who is experienced in a particular form of meditation, one should first make one's heart confident that that teacher is fully experienced in that form of meditation.

Confidence (saddha)
Be confident that the form of meditation taught is the right path for sure. At the same time, show respect for the place in which one is to meditate. Only then should one begin practicing.

Dedication
Teachers in the past used to require a dedication ceremony as a means of inspiring confidence before one was to study meditation. They would have one make an offering of five pairs of candles and five pairs of white flowers. This was called the five khandha. Or eight pairs of candles and eight pairs of white flowers, which was called the eight khandha. Or one pair of candles each weighing 15 grams and an equal number of white flowers.

Meditation methods
Then they would teach one their particular form of meditation. This ancient custom has its good points. There are many other ceremonies as well, but I won't go into them. I'll mention only a very simple, easy-to-follow ceremony a little further on.

Dhammakaya technique

Only after one has inspired confidence in one's heart as already mentioned should one go to the teacher experienced in that form of meditation. If a teacher is experienced in repeating samma araham, that teacher will teach one to repeat samma araham, samma araham, samma araham.
  • (Samma = "right," araham = arahant = "enlightened one," so roughly this could mean "right enlightenment.")
Then the teacher will have one visualize a bright, clear jewel two inches above the navel and tell one to focus the mind there as one continues the repetition, without letting the mind slip away from the jewel. In other words, one takes the jewel as the focal point of the mind.

Rising and falling
If one goes to a teacher experienced in meditating on the rising and falling of the abdomen, that teacher will have one meditate on rising and falling and focus the mind on the different motions of the body.

For instance, when one raises a foot, one thinks "raising." When one places a foot, one thinks "placing," and so on. Or else the teacher will have one focus continually on being preoccupied with the phenomenon of arising and passing away in every motion or position of the body.

Psychic powers
If one goes to a teacher experienced in psychic powers, that teacher will have one repeat na ma ba dha, na ma ba dha and focus the mind on a single object until it takes one to see heavens and hells, deities and brahmas of all sorts, to the point where one gets carried away with those visions.

Breath meditation
If one goes to a teacher experienced in breath meditation, that teacher will have one focus on one's in-and-out breath (ana-pana-sati) and have one keep the mind firmly preoccupied with nothing but the in-and-out breath.

Mantra reptition
If one goes to a teacher experienced in meditating on the mantra buddho, that teacher will have one repeat buddho, buddho, buddho and have one keep the mind firmly on that meditation word until one is fully skilled at it.

Then that teacher will have one contemplate buddho and what it is that is saying buddho. Once one sees that they are two separate things, focus on what's saying buddho. As for the word buddho, it will disappear, leaving only what it is that was saying buddho.

One then focuses on what it is that was saying buddho as the object of meditation.

What is the true cause?
People of our time — people of any time, for that matter — regardless of how educated or capable they may be and especially those of us who are Buddhists: Buddhism teaches causes and effects that are entirely true, but why is it that we have to fall for the claims and advertisements we hear everywhere? It must be because people at present are impatient and want to see results before they have completed the causes, in line with the fact that we are supposed to be in an atomic age.
  • (I don't want to criticize any of us as tending to believe in things the truth of which we have not tested because, after all, we all want to know and see the truth.)
Buddhism teaches us to penetrate into the heart and mind, which are mental phenomena. As for the material body, it is a physical phenomenon. Physical phenomena are under the control of mental phenomena.

Training the mind

When we begin to practice meditation and train the mind to be quiet and untroubled, I can't see that we are creating any problems at that moment for anyone at all. If we keep practicing until we are skilled, then we will be calm and at peace.

If more and more people practice this way, there will be peace and happiness all over the world. As for the body, we can train it to be peaceful only as long as the mind is in full control.

The minute mindfulness lapses, the body will return to its old habits. So let's try training the mind by repeating buddho.

Preliminary Steps to Practicing Meditation
Before practicing meditation on the mantra word buddho, start with the preliminary steps. In other words, inspire confidence in the mind, as already mentioned, then bow three times, saying: More

Voice Liberation Playshop with Mayumi

Mayumi B. (kinshipyoga.com, Instagram); Dhr. Seven (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

WHAT HAPPENED?

Mayumi on IG (@shaktimayumi)
We gathered on the wood floors of Kinship, forming a circle and were welcomed by Mayumi, with introductions going around. Say your name and make a sound with a body movement, and we will all mimic it. We each came up a signature exclamation and move. Everyone followed suit.

We got up as Mayumi turned into a Japanese American shaman from Highland Park (L.A.), pulsing a horseskin drum she made by hand. We moved rhythmically, and I suddenly began to think, "Wow, I really am in L.A."

The group was about 99% women, all wanting to open their throat chakras and express themselves without shame, overcoming the shaming, belittling, and being told to quiet down we all experience. Childhood trauma was an underlying issue in the group.

We made sounds, drank tea, danced like Burning Man/Bhakti Fest hipsters, and made sounds, expressing our range of vocal ability.

I had been privileged to have a hands-on healing from Mayumi at the Collective a few days in advance. I thought there would be more of that, which is available in private sessions.

Instead, it was a group healing, over all too soon. Will there be another? There will. Keep an eye on Dharma Buddhist Meditation and her Instagram for details.
