Mother Juliana

Mother Juliana, Julian of Norwich (wiki)

Julian of Norwich (circa 1343 [note 1]–after 1416)—also known as Juliana of Norwich, the Lady Julian, Dame Julian [4], and Mother Julian—was an English anchoress of the Middle Ages.

Her writings, now known as Revelations of Divine Love, are the earliest surviving English-language works attributed to a woman. (One might surmise that the poems of Sappho from the Island of Sappho in ancient Greece wrote works earlier and was credited for doing so before Mother Juliana).

They are also the only surviving English-language works by an anchoress. Julian(a) lived in the English city of Norwich, an important center for commerce which also had a vibrant religious life.

During her lifetime, the city suffered the devastating effects of the Black Death (plague) of 1348–1350, the Peasants' Revolt (which affected large parts of England in 1381), and the suppression of the Lollards.

In 1373, aged 30 and so seriously ill that she thought she was on her deathbed, she received a series of visions or "shewings" (showings) of the Passion (Suffering) of Christ.

She recovered from her illness and wrote two versions of her experiences, the earlier one being completed soon after her recovery. A much longer version, today known as the Long Text, was written many years later. More

WHAT HAPPENED?

We gathered on the wood floors of Kinship, forming a circle and were welcomed by Mayumi, with introductions going around. Say your name and make a sound with a body movement, and we will all mimic it. We each came up a signature exclamation and move. Everyone followed suit.

We got up as Mayumi turned into a Japanese American shaman from Highland Park (L.A.), pulsing a horseskin drum she made by hand. We moved rhythmically, and I suddenly began to think, "Wow, I really am in L.A."

The group was about 99% women, all wanting to open their throat chakras and express themselves without shame, overcoming the shaming, belittling, and being told to quiet down we all experience. Childhood trauma was an underlying issue in the group.

We made sounds, drank tea, danced like Burning Man/Bhakti Fest hipsters, and made sounds, expressing our range of vocal ability.

I had been privileged to have a hands-on healing from Mayumi at the Collective a few days in advance. I thought there would be more of that, which is available in private sessions.

Instead, it was a group healing, over all too soon. Will there be another? There will. Keep an eye on Dharma Buddhist Meditation and her Instagram for details.

The Charleston was a major development, along with the Blackbottom. Jazz dance is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. Pagans as a group are underrepresented in the atheistic-Catholic-Judeo-Christian U.S., but which nowadays seems mostly either hedonistic, guilty, or both. And more than that, Pagans are misunderstood.

Many Americans are disaffected with "traditional" religion and seek real spirituality.

However, we are a bigger group than most people would believe. By publicizing some practices, people outside of the Pagan community will begin to understand and eventually become more accepting.

Pagan Pride Los Angeles, Inc. is an outgrowth of the International Pagan Pride Project (paganpride.org), a non-profit organization that sponsors annual Pagan Pride Day celebrations in cities around the world during every year between August and November.

The goal is to promote understanding and tolerance of Pagans (or at least cut down on the Massachussetts' witch burnings Hawthorne was familiar with) within the general community. Each individual event is coordinated and executed by local residents of the region.

Pagan Pride Day is an event designed to give Pagans a place to gather, network, and celebrate the bounty of what we have in life. It is also a place to educate the general public about both what Paganism is and is not (e.g., it's not Satanism). We promote religious tolerance by building bridges of understanding between people.
