Los Angeles Dodgers victory parade (11/3)

Dodgers fans celebrate World Series win

LA bleeds blue...or periwinkle.
(KTLA 5) Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025: KTLA's Jillian Smukler speaks to Dodgers fans the morning after the team's big win. Did the "Boys in Blue" do it or what? - What? - "What"? - Yes, this is still a PC California town. They're not the BiB. - They're not? What are they? They are the Persons in Periwinkle, and don't forget it! - The PiP? What kind of LGBTQIA+ PC carp is that? That's not going to go over too well at the giant victory parade and Dodger Stadium rally/merch bazaar.

Victory parade and Dodger Stadium Celebration Monday morning

The Los Angeles Dodgers are once again World Series champions, earning back-to-back titles last night with their backs to the wall, the first time it's been done in a quarter century.

Next come the official celebrations. Los Angeles' team will host a victory parade Monday morning, followed by a ticketed rally at Dodgers Stadium. Tickets on sale noon Sunday.

The Big Parade
  • The victory parade route, DTLA
WHEN: Monday, starting at 11:00 am.
  • ROUTE: Starting point is Temple Street and Broadway Avenue in downtown (DTLA). Then the parade will move from Temple St. to Grand Ave. to 7th St., then to Figueroa St.
  • CLOSURES: Fans are being urged and strongly advised to take public transit (Metro) because of street closures, impossible traffic, and very limited public parking.
The big Dodger Stadium rally

Birthday Ghost: Valenzuela
It's one or the other. A ticketed event is planned after the parade -- with food, entertainment, and plenty of World Series merchandise, Shohei Ohtani tee-shirts, Yoshinobu Yamamoto jerseys, commemorative plastic tchotchkes.

The parade will be streamed on the giant scoreboards while the crowd waits for the team to arrive from the victory parade route through DTLA.

Due to street closures, fans will only be able to attend either the parade or the stadium celebration. No exceptions.

Making "Merit" in Buddhism

Wisdom Quarterly edit of Wikipedia entry "Merit"
The Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha vowed to save others even from the hells (en.topictures.com)

The best merit contributes to one's growth towards liberation (nirvana, moksha, full emancipation). But it is generally useful and welcome however it manifests.
Merit can be gained in a number of ways. Before the Buddha's time, it was customary to pray and make vows (deals). Others chanted Brahminical-style mantras and engaged in unprofitable rites and rituals:

According to a latter day Mahayana Buddhist invention, the Sutra of the Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, one can "transfer" 1/7th of the merit of an act performed to a deceased loved one such as in the Shitro practice in order to diminish the deceased's suffering in his or her rebirth.

"Transferring" merit is possible but not in the way we might imagine. IF one makes merit then "shares" it by offering it for the benefit of relatives (which extend seven generations back) not able by their circumstances to perform very many profitable deeds, AND those relatives approve of such deeds, MERIT is produced by their approval. It is actually their own doing with the help of the living.

Great Sivali, an arhat of astounding merit, abundance
The extent of their merit is measured by the meritoriousness of the deed of which they approve (commend, laud, rejoice, and delight in).

Giving to the noble Sangha or the Buddha or giving the gift of the Dharma (Dharma-dana) is superior karma most beings in the universe do not have access to and of which few have knowledge.

Beings able to receive this transfer of merit is limited, but it is possible. And it is meritorious to offer. Shakespeare's ghost writer was right when he borrowed someone else's observation noting that mercy does not dissipate by being expressed; it is only strengthened:

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest....
(Wm. Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice)

Transferring Merit
Pariṇāmanā is a Sanskrit term that may be translated as "transfer of merit" or "dedication." It involves helping others by generating merit then sharing it and thereby accruing even more as a result of having shared. The recipient to whom it is dedicated then has the opportunity to also generate merit IF s/he approves of the deed.

As humans we need never feel jealous or envious of others' accrual of good deeds, their riches of merit. Instead by approving, applauding, and rejoicing in them, we generate profitable mental karma based on the strength of their good. Our commendation and happiness for them, as well as the special strength of the deed(s) we are approving, enriches us. Unlike limited resources -- gold, greenbacks, oil, wage slaves, precious gems -- merit is a boundless fountain of happiness.

Sadly, the same goes for unprofitable karma: Often without realizing it we approve and applaud, sometimes silently at heart, karmically unwholesome deeds. One example is the death penalty. Or we celebrate the mistreatment or killing of others we have labelled "enemies" and members of other groups we distinguish ourselves from.

Rejoicing in the foolish misbehavior of others (violating precepts, holding to wrong views, encouraging actions motivated by greed, aversion, and delusion) brings us harm. This is mental karma bearing a mental resultant and later coming to fruition as miserable outward circumstances.

In fact, merely suggesting or praising or encouraging that one kill another (e.g., abort) or commit suicide -- if that person then does it -- makes us co-guilty of the action from a karmic standpoint.

Three Bases of Merit
There are three bases of merit. In the "Meritorious Deeds" sutra (AN 8.36, A 8.4.6), the Buddha identifies them:
And in the "Chanting Together" sutra (DN 33, Verse 38), Sariputra identifies the same three.

In the Khuddaka Nikaya's Itivuttaka (Iti. 1.22), these bases are defined as: giving, self-mastery, and refraining. In the same discourse the three are restated as: giving, a serene life of mental calm, and a mind of good-will (metta, universally extended friendship).

More Merit
Buddhist monastics accrue merit through Buddhist meditation (developing karmically profitable qualities), mindfulness (staying aware of the present moment), sustained contemplation (anussati), wise reflection (yoniso manasikara) while chanting sutras, personal restraint, higher virtue, preserving the Dharma for the human world, teaching the Dharma for the benefit of all beings, and practicing in accordance with the Dharma for the sake of liberation of oneself and others. It is not either-or, it is both.

A post-canonical commentary elaborates on the three bases of merit (D.III,218) by stating that lay practitioners can make merit by performing seven other actions:
  1. honoring others
  2. offering service
  3. inviting and involving others in skillful deeds
  4. rejoicing, being thankful, and appreciative for others' good deeds
  5. listening or studying the Dharma
  6. instructing others in the Dharma
  7. straightening one's own views in accordance with the Dharma (ditthujukamma).

Moviemaker Michael Moore on "Occupy"

#OWS is a leaderless, people-powered movement for democracy launched on Sept. 17 in the NYC financial district inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and Spanish acampadas. We vow to end monied corruption of our democracy.

Michael Moore: "This past weekend I participated in a four-hour meeting of Occupy Wall Street activists whose job it is to come up with the vision and goals of the movement.

"It was attended by 40+ people, and the discussion was both inspiring and invigorating. Here is what we ended up proposing as the movement's 'vision statement' to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street:

We envision: [1] a truly free, democratic, and just society; [2] where we, the people, come together and solve our problems by consensus; [3] where people are encouraged to take personal and collective responsibility and participate in decision making; [4] where we learn to live in harmony and embrace principles of toleration and respect for diversity and the differing views of others; [5] where we secure the civil and human rights of all from violation by tyrannical forces and unjust governments; [6] where political and economic institutions work to benefit all, not just the privileged few; [7] where we provide full and free education to everyone, not merely to get jobs but to grow and flourish as human beings; [8] where we value human needs over monetary gain, to ensure decent standards of living without which effective democracy is impossible; [9] where we work together to protect the global environment to ensure that future generations will have safe and clean air, water and food supplies, and will be able to enjoy the beauty and bounty of nature that past generations have enjoyed.

  • The next step will be to develop a specific list of goals and demands. As one of the millions of people who are participating in the Occupy Wall Street movement, I would like to respectfully offer my suggestions of what we can all get behind now to wrestle the control of our country out of the hands of the 1% and place it squarely with the 99% majority.
Here is what I will propose to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street:

10 Things We Want
A Proposal for Occupy Wall Street
Submitted by Michael Moore
1. Eradicate the Bush tax cuts for the rich and institute new taxes on the wealthiest Americans and on corporations, including a tax on all trading on Wall Street (where they currently pay 0%).

2. Assess a penalty tax on any corporation that moves American jobs to other countries when that company is already making profits in America. Our jobs are the most important national treasure and they cannot be removed from the country simply because someone wants to make more money.

3. Require that all Americans pay the same Social Security tax on all of their earnings (normally, the middle class pays about 6% of their income to Social Security; someone making $1 million a year pays about 0.6% (or 90% less than the average person). This law would simply make the rich pay what everyone else pays.

4. Reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act, placing serious regulations on how business is conducted by Wall Street and the banks.

5. Investigate the Crash of 2008, and bring to justice those who committed any crimes.

6. Reorder our nation's spending priorities (including the ending of all foreign wars and their cost of over $2 billion a week). This will re-open libraries, reinstate band and art and civics classes in our schools, fix our roads and bridges and infrastructure, wire the entire country for 21st century Internet, and support scientific research that improves our lives.

7. Join the rest of the free world and create a single-payer, free and universal health care system that covers all Americans all of the time.

8. Immediately reduce carbon emissions that are destroying the planet and discover ways to live without the oil that will be depleted and gone by the end of this century.

9. Require corporations with more than 10,000 employees to restructure their board of directors so that 50% of its members are elected by the company’s workers. We can never have a real democracy as long as most people have no say in what happens at the place they spend most of their time: their job. (For any U.S. businesspeople freaking out at this idea because you think workers can't run a successful company: Germany has a law like this and it has helped to make Germany the world’s leading manufacturing exporter.)

10. We, the people, must pass three constitutional amendments that will go a long way toward fixing the core problems we now have. These include:

  • a) A constitutional amendment that fixes our broken electoral system by 1) completely removing campaign contributions from the political process; 2) requiring all elections to be publicly financed; 3) moving election day to the weekend to increase voter turnout; 4) making all Americans registered voters at the moment of their birth; 5) banning computerized voting and requiring that all elections take place on paper ballots.
  • b) A constitutional amendment declaring that corporations are not people and do not have the constitutional rights of citizens. This amendment should also state that the interests of the general public and society must always come before the interests of corporations.
  • c) A constitutional amendment that will act as a "second bill of rights" as proposed by President Frankin D. Roosevelt: that every American has a human right to employment, to health care, to a free and full education, to breathe clean air, drink clean water and eat safe food, and to be cared for with dignity and respect in their old age.
Let me know what you think. Occupy Wall Street enjoys the support of millions. It is a movement that cannot be stopped. Become part of it by sharing your thoughts with me or online (at OccupyWallSt.org). Get involved in (or start!) your own local Occupy movement. Make some noise. You don't have to pitch a tent in lower Manhattan to be an Occupier. You are one just by saying you are. This movement has no singular leader or spokesperson; every participant is a leader in their neighborhood, their school, their place of work. Each of you is a spokesperson to those whom you encounter. There are no dues to pay, no permission to seek in order to create an action.

We are but ten weeks old, yet we have already changed the national conversation. This is our moment, the one we've been hoping for, waiting for. If it's going to happen it has to happen now. Don't sit this one out. This is the real deal. This is it.

Occupy: How to beat Police (video)

Lyssa Clayton, Eva Schonveld (Giraffe Talk); M.B. Rosenberg; Wisdom Quarterly
SYSTEM OF A DOWN shows the problem. Occupy Wall Street is the backdrop. Police State resistance is what we want to overcome. NVC is how.

How to be heard in the peaceful Occupy Movement

How can I communicate with [brutal police and occupiers who act like violent] children?

One of the biggest issues for me is how I communicate or fail to communicate.

With the best of intentions I have found myself saying things in ways which make things worse.

I sometimes find it nearly impossible not to slip down the slope of judging, blaming, criticizing [and subduing them with batons, mace, projectiles weapons, flash grenades, and automatic gunfire].

() Animated introduction to meeting everyone's need
How many of us end up saying things in a tone that has unpleasant "you’re bad" connotations?
  • “You always ____”
  • “Why can’t you just do/not do x, y, z?”
How many of us find we have forced [others] to do something we wanted but felt very unhappy about how we achieved it?

For many of us, much of how we relate to our children [and others] is [how we were related to as children and by others]. At its root it is based on coercion: the “you will get/not get something if you don’t cooperate.”

The sub-text in a lot of our everyday wrangles with [others] is, “I’m bigger and stronger than you, so you are going to have to do what I say” (because "might makes right").

[This is exactly what police and the Police State behind them believe! There is an easier way to win, just as martial arts are not based on strength and force but rather receiving, redirecting, and flowing.]

We teach our children [and police] values more deeply through how we interact with them than what we preach at them.

[Hey, fat f@#%n p!gs, F### Y*U, f@$ci$t$!!!]

Communicating like protesters instead of police
Rosenberg explains Nonviolent Communication.

So are there ways to change how we communicate at a deep level [to make it effective in actually getting what we want rather than provoking a negative reaction]?

Is there a tool, a technique? Is there help, support, a way to begin?

Faced daily with feelings of exasperation and powerlessness in my [tent], I was intrigued and excited to hear about the idea of Nonviolent or Compassionate Communication.

The word "violent" in this context refers to the way we can hurt or damage people through the use of words which do not respect another as worthy of our compassion and understanding, rather than necessarily [physically harming them].

Nonviolent Communication (NVC)
The process of NVC was developed by Dr. Rosenberg in response to growing up in Detroit in a culture colored with violence and riots. He found himself exploring two major questions.
  1. What happens to disconnect us from our compassionate nature, leading us to behave in a violent and exploitative way?
  2. What allows some people to remain connected to their compassionate nature under even the most trying circumstances?

How to Win the Lottery

Two lottery wins in one year
Edward Williams won $75,000 in September, but his recent jackpot is much bigger. Earnings after taxes

How to win the lottery

(WQ Opinion) Long before you set out to win, be sure to prepare for it. Everything is dependent on a cause. So even if you were able to win a lottery (say by cheating), you would not be able to hold onto the winnings if there were no good karmic basis for having money. Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw, a remarkable scholar-practitioner has an insightful interpretation of the Dharma. He points out that unless one has the supportive karma for business success, a fraudulent or criminal business person will not be able to succeed. Therefore, even a bad individual needs "good" karma to support one's success.

Don't gamble. Gambling is certain loss. Take a gambit with something behind it. But the habit of trying to win by the odds is gambling, and it is a miserable addiction that feeds the obscenely lucrative gaming industry. Gambling is losing.

Karma

What is suitable karma for winning? Giving gold/money/support (particularly to the point where one has developed a generous disposition) is suitable karma. The question is where to give it to produce the most profitable results. With the recipient in mind, the most important thing is virtue. A virtuous recipient produces the best (most exponential) results. Virtue may take the form of the Five Precepts, Eight or Ten Precepts, the monastic rules (Vinaya), or simply living by any code that reduces or at least suppresses the roots of bad karma:

How to give? Equally important is the giver: states of mind before, during, and after are crucial. Happy to give, happy while giving, and happy to have given produces superior results. The purity of the intention of the giver is enough to purify the gift. Superior results are gained from superior goals. The best reason to give is simply because it adorns and ennobles the mind and because it serves as the basis for reaching nirvana. Long before one reaches that "complete end of suffering," one enjoys the five strands of sensuality, great riches, beauty, long life, and influence.

Inspiration

Finally, having established a basis for a monetary windfall (without being reborn into a vast inheritance), purchase a lottery ticket. Either depend on the universe to provide a winning ticket (without even trying to discern the winning numbers), or simply choose numbers based on inspiration. Choosing numbers as most do (based on a child's birth date or other good luck charms) has a predictable result: most people don't win. Most people are not tapping into intuition and inspiration.

Two Cautionary Tales

Prize divides two elderly sisters
HARTFORD, Connecticut - Two once-inseparable octogenarian sisters are divided over lottery winnings. The Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled that one can sue the other for a share of a winning $500,000 ticket. The court said 83-year-old Theresa Sokaitis, of Middletown, can try to enforce a written contract she signed with her 87-year-old sister, Rose Bakaysa, of Plainville. More>>

Following a Hungry Hunch

A story is told of a man who awoke while dreaming of the number five. He smelled a warm and wonderful aroma from his kitchen. His wife had arisen before him and unexpectedly prepared him a pile of five syrup drenched pancakes. He gobbled them up, she offered him five more, and announced she was pregnant with their fifth child. His jaw dropped. He grabbed the paper, turned to the horserace listings, and noticed that at 5:00 pm that day, a Number Five, a horse named Cinco was running. He raced to the bank, pulled out $5,000, and greedily placed his bet. Sure enough, his horse came in fifth place. (Moral: inspiration is an intuitive, inner-knowing, not a hungry hunch or a simple set of coincidences).
