Asian American Pacific Islander Month

I'm Asian from Near East, now in Afghanistan

What is an Asian? Asia is a big place with at least four very different regions: South Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, and North Asia. These territories are so large with populations that are so massive, it is likely that most people on the planet today are Asian. Even the Native Americans, and therefore the Mexicans and Central and South Americans, might have Asian roots. This depends on whether one buys the theory that Siberians (North Asians) crossed the Bering Straits over a temporary land bridge that once existed. No doubt someone crossed over, but there's plenty of doubt if that's how all or most Indigenous people arrived that way. Much more likely are repeated waves of arrivals for millennia. People have been in the New World for more than 50,000 years according to Graham Hancock. And they were originally very dark-skinned Australian aborigines.

Of course, Pacific Islanders have been coming and going for even longer. There's an island where kava kava grows called Vanuatu. It's way out in the South Pacific. Using canoes there was a group who navigated from there to Easter Island to Guam and the 1,000 islands, islets, and atolls that comprise the massive state of Hawaii. We hear about four islands, but there are at least 996 more. Look at a detailed map. Most of them are off-limits and used for war. At least one is covered by a veil, cloaking it from the rest of the planet. A pilot who stumbled upon it and lived there during his absence after crash landing in the open ocean, wrote about it. A movie was supposed to come out about it, with its active volcano, strange, isolated culture, which aware of the outside world and wanting nothing to do with it, a princess, and a planned human sacrifice to appease the "god" of that volcano. We waited after his appearance on Coast to Coast and, thanks George, you disappointed us again. Formerly Buddhist Afghanistan, the birthplace of the Buddha (yes, not Nepal and not India, but an ancient place named Gandhara around the Indus Valley Civilization).

That is completely wrong and an egregious error because the actual tree under which Siddhartha the Buddha Gautama awakened under a tree that lives on the island, known as the Bodhi tree -- at least a cutting of the original tree from Bihar (proto-India). That tree is destroyed, but its direct ancestor lives on: Mesua ferrea.

It's curious. One never thinks about it. But an Indian runs England (arch conservative good old boy Rishi Sunak, 43). An Indian runs Ireland (gay Pres. Leo Varadkar). An Indian runs India (uber-conservative, anti-Muslim, nationalist and Trump-wannabe Narendra Modi). An Indian ran South Carolina (former governor, US Ambassador to the UN, and rabid Republican conservative Nikki Haley (née Ms. Nimarata "Nikki" Randhawa). And then there's the young upstart Indian Republican Hirsh Vardhan Singh (conservative businessman).

Why's everyone attacking V. Ramaswamy?

But who are any of these Indian innovators and what are they doing? They're gunning for business entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy's next job in the White House.

If anyone is making a splash in Trump's yellowish (orange) pool, it's Whippersnapper Ramaswamy-jii. He's the sharpest, most rappingest Indian in the U.S. race.

As president, I'll represent the corporations.

And given the financial success of many Indians in America, they're becoming the model minority. The world knows something: India is now the largest country in the world, by population, so Indians are the future. China is falling away, due in large part to its old one child policy which left a gender imbalance and a non-replacement population. Demographics don't lie. Think business. It won't be China so much as India. The EU knows it, so the US finds itself waking up.

Democrat? Dotard Biden can't cut it. Who's Joey's heir apparent? Indian Kamala Harris (Harishchandra Gopalan?), current VP with her designs on the Oval Office. With Trump on his way to jail for corruption, bad business practices, and court, where he'll be bogged down for years, it looks like it's bye-bye for the Boogeyman, the Mara at the Lago mansion.

We're voting for Andrew D. Basiago, so who needs an old white man in the highest office? Biden is the oldest. Trump is the second oldest. And one could hardly get any whiter, having been bitterly let down by Black sellout Prof. Cornel West and this year's Green Party.

Overview: This is the story of the origins of Buddhist art. The religious landscape of ancient [proto-] India was transformed by the teachings of the Buddha, which in turn inspired art devoted to expressing his message [the Dharma of Awakening].

Sublime imagery adorned the most ancient monumental religious structures in ancient India, known as stupas [Central and North Asian burial mounds].

The stupa housed the relics [sariras, unique crystallizations left in the cremation ashes of fully enlightened beings] of the Buddha and also honored him through symbolic representations and visual storytelling.

Original relics and reliquaries are at the heart of this exhibition, which culminates with the Buddha image itself.

"Dragons" are a worldwide phenomenon

Featuring more than 140 objects dating from 200 BCE to 400 CE, the exhibition presents a series of evocative and interlocking themes to reveal both the pre-Buddhist origins of figurative sculpture in [pre-] India and the early narrative traditions that were central to this formative moment in early Indian art.

With major loans from a dozen lenders across [modern] India, as well as from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States, it transports visitors into the world of early Buddhist imagery that gave expression to this new religion as it grew from a core set of ethical teachings into one of the world’s great religions.

Objects associated with Indo-Roman exchange reveal India’s place in early global trade.

The exhibition showcases objects in various media, including limestone sculptures, gold, silver, bronze, rock crystal, and ivory.

Highlights include spectacular sculptures from southern India — newly discovered and never before publicly exhibited masterpieces — that add to the world canon of early Buddhist art.

The exhibition is made possible by Reliance Industries Limited, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global, and the Fred Eychaner Fund.

Just as flowers take root in graveyards...Ages before the invention of mindfulness apps, Buddhism was born at the base of a tree, in northern [Bihar, in future] India, where a [former] prince sat down to meditate and — [one time by a pond during a rainstorm while meditating came] under the protection of a seven-headed snake [a shapeshifting royal naga named Mucalinda*] — [after he had already] reached enlightenment [previously under a Ficus religiosa tree at another location].

Among the notable nagas of Buddhist tradition is *King Mucalinda naga-raja ("royal-reptilian") a protector of the Buddha. In the Vinaya Sutra (I, 3), shortly after his enlightenment, the Buddha is meditating in a forest when a great storm arises.

Graciously, King Mucalinda gives shelter to the Buddha from the storm by covering the Buddha's head with [by shapeshifting into a massive cobra with] seven heads [20]. The king then takes the form of a young Brahmin and pays homage to the Buddha [20].

Why did Europeans worship dragons/nagas?

In the Tibetan/Himalayan Vajrayāna and Mahāsiddha traditions [21] nagas in their half-human form are depicted holding a nagas-jewel, kumbhas of amrita ("jugs of ambrosia"), or a terma that had been elementally encoded by adepts.

In Tibetan Buddhism, nagas are known as klu or klu-mo [sea serpents]. They are associated with water and cleanliness, as they live in oceans, rivers, lakes, and springs, and do not want their environments to be disturbed or polluted [22].

The two chief male disciples [corresponding to his two chief female monastic disciples Ven. Khema and Uppalavana] of the Buddha, Ven. Sariputta and Ven. Moggallāna are both referred to as mahā-nāga or "great nāga" [23].

The oldest settlements in South India: The Keeladi excavations

(Storytrails) Premiered March 6, 2023. CHENNAI (Madras), India - How old are the oldest settlements in South India?

What did the recent excavations at Keeladi (aka Keezhadi) and other places along the Vaigai and Porunai (Thamirabarani) rivers reveal?

For a long time, it was believed that South India had no ancient urban civilizations like in the north [where the Indus Valley Civilization and the Vedic Civilization thrived near Gandhara, now in parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, which were formerly parts of the Indian Empire].

While the Sangam Period (dated 300 BCE–300 CE) literature talks of a sophisticated Tamil civilization, there was no concrete archeological proof to back it up…until the path-finding/groundbreaking Keeladi excavations that started in 2015.

A series of digs carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India in a little village near Madurai unearthed artifacts dating back at least to the 6th century BCE [the time of the Buddha].

This included pottery fragments with graffiti marks very similar to the Indus Valley Civilization script. But Keeladi isn’t the first or only place to offer evidence of ancient settlements in Tamil Nadu.

Adichanallur, Korkai, Pallavaram, Attirampakkam, and many more sites have produced an array of amazing artifacts over the last 100 years or so, including the oldest human tool to be ever discovered in India -- a hand-axe that was discovered in Pallavaram, part of present-day Chennai.

It’s only in recent years that the pieces of the jigsaw have started coming together. Archeologists believe that many more exciting discoveries, possibilities, and answers are waiting to be found at this site.

Ancient artificial bridge to India

[Sinhalese] Sri Lankans often refer to themselves as “Lions” or “The Lion Nation.” One of the reasons they do so is due to the obvious lion symbol on the country’s flag.

[A better reason is that singha means lion, and other non-Buddhist people on the island call themselves Tamil tigers, infamous for their separatist inclinations.]

Thousands of years of Buddhism

The other reason is less known but much more meaningful. The lion has frequently been linked to words such as courageous and proud. The Sri Lanka Foundation is a foundation dedicated to the preservation of Sri Lankan culture. It strives to exhibit courage and pride in their charitable work and events.

• Sri Lanka ("Sacred Land") is famous as a citadel of early Buddhist teachings preserved in the Pali language from India and Scythia (Gandhara and northwestern hinterlands around Afghanistan where the Buddha was born and first promulgated the Dharma). Sri Lankan Buddhists, in their recorded history called the Mahavamsa or "Great Chronicles" speak of coming from that land by boat to settle Sri Lanka. They are not Dravidians from South India like the neighboring Tamils of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state in India.

One of the foundation’s most significant events is “Sri Lanka Day.” Every year the foundation works diligently to bring the sights, tastes, colors, and the general feel of Sri Lanka to spectators who gather in one location from all over California.

It is an annual celebration and tribute to the culture and heritage of the Sri Lankan people. In coordinating the event the foundation seeks to inform the public about their country and its customs. The foundation also aspires to bring generations of Sri Lankans together as a community, to pass along history from one generation to another. The event will take all who attend on a short trip to Sri Lanka through traditional foods, music, dances, art, and theater.
 

Colorful costumes of an island culture

Attendees hear the echo of handmade drums each with its unique tone. They experience a visual feast of vibrant island costumes, colorful clothing, and ornate jewelry. Participants explore the sweets, spices, and aromas of curries and traditional foods while being captivated by dancers and performers. Children and adults alike revel in the Kandy Parade (Perahera), the famous Sri Lankan spectacle that features theater elephants the size of real elephants. And all of these experiences can be enjoyed without ever leaving California.

In previous years “Sri Lanka Day” has attracted more than 100,000 visitors. The 2015 SL Day was special because it was the first year the event was held in the City of Pasadena.
