This weekend the Blessed Mother Teresa is finally made an official "saint" of the Catholic Church, now that the Vatican's Office of the Devil's Advocate has been shuttered to make it easier for candidates to be advanced without significant obstruction. Even so, at breakneck speed, it has taken years for a living saint -- as recognized by the people of India -- to be declared a "saint" posthumously. Better late than never, but it would mean much more if the standards had not been lowered to the floor years before. The Church simply uses canonization as a propaganda tool nowadays so that the pope, its titular head, can canonize locals wherever he visits to encourage more recruits to the largest religion in the world. They don't have to be vetted very much, so Africa and China are now ripe recruiting ground even as Europe old faith loses traditional adherents in droves.

LHASA, Tibet - Two earthquakes measuring 5.7 and 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted the Tibetan Autonomous Region in southwest China today. The first 5.7-magnitude quake struck at around 10:06 a.m. (local time) and the second 5.5-magnitude hit 38 minutes later, both in northern Tibet’s Nyainrong County, Nagqu Prefecture. Nepal's "Living Goddess" to lure Indians

KATHMANDU (Press Trust of India) - Nepal's "Living Goddess Kumari," worshipped by millions in the country, will be one of the main attractions at a special Durga Puja celebration in Kolkata (Calcutta) in a bid to boost tourism to the Himalayan state.

The move has been welcomed by Nepal's consulate office in Kolkata as a means of strengthening the cultural and religious ties between the two countries as well as to promote tourism. This year, they will be focusing on Nepal, said Nepalese consul-general in Kolkata, Suresh Man Shrestha.

Nepal's historic, cultural, and religious features will be showcased in the Puja pandal in Kolkata for a week starting September 22, as part of the celebrations, Nepal Tourism Board said in a press release. Nepal's tourism promotion campaign aims to target one million visitors during the "Nepal Tourism Year 2011." Source
