NEW: Ocean Way Festival, Los Angeles

OC Fair music tries to outdo LA County Fair
Could pop and alt rock fans from LA and the OC ever be interested in seeing acts like Sublime, Jack White, Olivia Dean (Queen of the Summer), Khruangbin, or Coco & Breezy without a long drive through the desert stuck in traffic with building anticipation?

Goldenvoice is betting locals would. There's a new "Coachella" by the same outfit that runs the one in the desert (as well as country and Western themed Stagecoach), but this one is going to be in Santa Monica, the Ocean Way Festival.

Register for access. Tickets go on sale Thursday, July 23rd, at 11:00 am (Pacific Time). Register now to receive a presale code and link to purchase tickets. For help registering, email: register@goldenvoice.com.

LA punk rock FUN with Social Distortion

Television report from W5 about the early 1980's punk rock scene in Los Angeles, California, featuring Back In Control Center (hilarious) and Mike Ness' band Social Distortion.

As a kid in a punk rock garage band many years ago in LA, we once opened for Social D. It was a house party at a squatter's flat in Highland Park, where runaways and heavy partiers stayed. With electricity piped in from a long extension cord, we did what we could. Then came the house band Detox followed by Julie's SIN 34 from Santa Monica before SD headlined. If Hollywood makes a version of that night, it looked a bit like this (and nothing as cool as the first video):
(ANWE) Detox

On way to Social D show, we pass LA's 'open air drug market' (MacArthur Park)
A girl from SM can't be punk rock.

RIP Julie Lanfeld-Keskin (SIN 34)
I remember thinking, "Who does this guy think he is with makeup, way more than guyliner, and where can I get some?"

Even then Mike Ness was a powerful presence if only because it seemed for all the world that he did not give two S's, very in line with the Tao. Who knew he had a drinking problem?

Mystic Dharma Buddhist Temple, LA
The strange thing was, this being LA, there was a massive and mysterious Buddhist building (Mystic Dharma Temple) just down the street on Figueroa St. Rather than drinking, like the fictional character Kwai Chang Caine (Kung Fu), I was drawn to visiting it and learning to meditate from Ven. Chao Chu, a Sri Lankan Mahayana-Theravada polyglot hybrid monk and his snooty American assistant Dana.

Hardcore, alcohol free, vegan...straight edge
How did I get so lucky? Years later, visiting Sri Lanka and Malaysia, the senior Theravada scholar-monk Ven. K. Sri Dhammananda sighed a copy of his Dhammapada (verses and backstories), writing: "One who protects the Dhamma is protected by the Dhamma."

Punk could be very smart (DKs)
It seemed profound at the time, but instead of magic, what it really seems to be saying is very basic: Imagine working in an industrial factory and instead of a sign that reads how many days since the last accident, the bosses were to put up an inspirational note that read: "One who protects [keeps] the safety rules is protected by the safety rules." Rule No. 5 is "to undertake to abstain from alcohol and intoxicants that occasion heedlessness." I could leave the hard drinking to Mike Ness, Detox, and all the followers. I could be straight edge before that caught on on the west coast. I was already listening to east coast Minor Threat, British anarcho punk vegans Rudimentary Peni, and the Dead Kennedys, which was a start.

L.A. PUNK 13 (documentarian Lou Elovitz)
Karma being what it is, we eventually ended up getting advanced degrees at UCLA, but not before Chao Chu and I attended the local community college to make up for a wasted youth in high school. There we started the college's first Buddhist club. The temple, the monk, and Dana eventually moved to Rosemead.

Mayor of the Sunset Strip
Karma, it makes for a long strange trip. So, as the saying goes, "be careful who you step on to move up in the world; you'll be seeing them again on the way down" or some such. Brad Warner was nowhere to be seen, but Noah Levine might have been around as well as Steve Pfauter. Maybe L.A. PUNK 13 knows all of this in greater detail.

The scene, the rise of punk rock in Los Angeles and Southern California was ignited by KROQ's most significant DJ ever, the pervy Jewish Mayor of the Sunset Strip Rodney "On the 'ROQ" Bingenheimer.

Swami Vivekananda at Mead sisters house
Strangely, this House of the Rising Sun (aka Haunted House, S**t House) was very near the Self-Realization Fellowship Mother Center above us on Mt. Washington (the privileged enclave Billie Eilish and Finneas O'C lived in when they got mega famous), the Southwest Museum of the American Indian on the side of the mountain and Lummis House next to the concrete LA River, not too far from the Victorian Mead sisters house in South Pasadena Swami Vivekananda chose as his center on the west coast when he declared Pasadena the "Varanasi of the West."

Live fast, die young...or the opposite
One of the strange things about living in LA is its proximity to Hollywood, the throat chakra of the West, like the larger Bollywood is for the East (or India at least) is running into stars. We were at the radio station (KROQ.com, 106.7 FM), at the Audacy Corporation in the Miracle Mile district celebrating Cinco de Mayo at the cantina Descanso. Across the street, legendary punk pioneers Social Distortion was going to play a secret show at the station's new Sound Stage. A few maneuvers later, we were in! But what a strange trip. Standing next to Punk Rock Girl to see cancer survivor Mike Ness, once the epitome of tough guy drunk (now 40 years sober in AA), looking like some kind of gavone from the Lower East Side of NY or some TV gangster mobster as Megan Holiday and Kevin Ryder roll him out for an interview. Nice guy, learned a lot from AA, but he can barely talk or think or comprehend what's going on. The crowd loved it, having won tickets for the coveted show over the past few weeks. Flagging, failing self-proclaimed "punk influencer" Punk Rock Girl (Erin Micklow), who was persona non grata at the Queen Mary punk show and has been banned from Punk Rock Bowling at the Punk Museum in Las Vegas, we hear, weaseled her way in. "Who does a girl have to sl**p with to get into these things?" she might be asking. We would tell her if she asked us. But she seemed to enjoy herself as much as the Ozempic crowd largely in attendance. Punk rock never died, but it sure has been through a lot. Social D has a new album, Born to Kill, coming out after 15 years, and heartless corporate entity KROQ is doing them a solid due to all the fans they still have.

WQ meeting at KROQ Comedy Show (3/13)

(OCV) What is stand-up comedy? Dave Chappelle explains with some examples for Johnny

WHAT HAPPENED?
The club filled up with lots of hooting and hollering patrons eager to see Johnny make a mockery of himself as he dies on stage. But there are many other standup comedians doing the heavy lifting. Vanessa actually dressed up for the evening, wearing a very low-cut blouse that makes her visibly uncomfortable, getting hit on by Blind Charlie's date. She's touching and rubbing away while High T Vanessa visibly squirms and tries to get her to stop. Jake looks like a pregnant B with a small dog strapped to his belly as he yells. The poor thing must be deaf by now as his nervous human companion tries to fade into the woodwork. Klein is sitting up front, but Ally is missing in action, having joined DJ Omar Kahn for a private confab in oblivion. The crowd roars as Johnny is forced to take the stage, six inches off the ground, with a stream of drinkers repeatedly heading for the washroom to see or smell what kind of mess Jake has made. He doesn't bomb! The crowd loves him. He's a simpleton but very affable, and he seems to have prepared some material that he didn't practice on the radio show. He even has a guitar hidden away, which he pulls out in Minute 4 to peals of "Tamales Tamales!" But he has a new song, maybe prepared for the occasion. His girlfriend in skulking in the back surprised to see the crowd participation and encouragement. He was set to fail as he does on most episodes of "Johnny Doesn't Know," but his ego has survived the ordeal. Klein cuts out and by the time Jake stumbles onto the stage as the headliners, the crickets are chirping and the crowd is getting antsy. He doesn't seem well prepared, considering himself an old hat at this, he's sure he can just wing it by memory and a cheat sheet. The crowd tries to help, but Vanessa puts down her phone and it just gets worse and worse. Meanwhile, the WQ meeting has moved to the NoHo Buddhist Temple on Oxnard, the Sarathchandra Buddhist Center. The most amazing this to come from the evening are the knowledge that The Good Nite is full of free standup, music, and open mics most nights and WQ has set its next meeting for the Kwan Yin Meditation Temple in Monrovia, hugging the foothills next to Old Town.

World Champ MJF roast Klein. Ally. Show. | Friday the 13th
(KROQ) Streamed live morning of March 13th. It's the Klein.Ally.Show. (KAS) on KROQ.com. There's snow in New York and a heatwave in Los Angeles as we all head out for the big comedy show with Host Dirty Jake Dill.

On today's show: Jewish wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) joins KAS in studio, "Johnny Doesn't Know," "5-10-20," and more.

It's another Friday the 13th and another day of not-so-gentle ribbing, this time from All Elite wrestling star MJF (Maxwell Jacob Friedman). He stopped by the studio while gearing up to defend his AEW World Championship title. He mercilessly roasts Klein's new nose, Ally's lack of hygiene, Dirty Jake's virginity, Columbian Vanessa's odd voice, and Low T Johnny the Postman's everything.
The show also brings back 5-10-20, challenging listeners to place three KROQ alt rock songs in order: One from 5 years ago, 10 years ago, and 20 years ago.

The show also hears Low T Johnny's final ideas before his big 5-minute [self-immolation] set for tonight at the Good Nite in NoHo at 7:00 pm. Be there!

Today being Good Luck Friday the 13th, Wisdom Quarterly: American Buddhist Journal is meeting to see stand-up comic Low T Johnny from KROQ's KAS Jake Dill (Instagram) is putting on a comedy show at The Good Nite Bar tonight at 7:00 pm.
Join the entire morning zoo crew: Ally Johnson, Kevin Klein, High T Vanessa the Columbian, Dirty Jake Dill, Low T Johnny, and maybe even the elusive and never-before-seen DJ Omar Kahn.

'Rodger the Dodger-Hater' calls in (LIVE)

Each team member got to sleep with the trophy as they passed it around between themselves.

Rodger the Dodger Hater calls in to talk 💩
Rodger the Dodger-Hater calls in: Klein.Ally.Show. Monday, Nov. 3, 2025 (KROQ FM)

Salary cap is coming for 2026
(KROQ) DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, Southern California - KROQ (106.7 FM)'s Morning Zoo "Klein. Ally. Show." took a call back in March from Rodger, who called back today to mock the suggestion of a "threepeat."

This whole thing is fake, Rodger says, with Chinese (Asian) AI and money spoiling the sport with big paychecks for a select few and a middle-class struggle for the rest of the team.

The "Klein. Ally. Show." dares to give this disgruntled naysayer and crank a voice on LA/OC's airwaves in an attempt to break "Dodger fever."

Crowd ready to riot unless it gets satisfaction.
Since the hype was real for the Dodgers on opening day, of course K&A had to mark the return of listener "Rodger the Dodger Hater" by having him back. Is Roj right? Will the Dodgers choke, or will history repeat itself with another successful parade?

There's nothing like cake and parades to keep everyone from noticing the collapsing economy, starvation (food insecurity) of the needy, and ICE gangs roving the streets of the nation to raid whomever they want whenever they want backed by the orangest dictator ever.

Mass hysteria for city's sports team
Dodger Stadium tickets sold out in an hour, ranging in price from $38-$135 plus $75 parking.

Aftershock, Coachella...alt rock fests

I'm just looking for cheap thrills
Imagine a privileged life so tragic there's nothing left to do but attend big alt rock festivals, dance to EDM, and get blitzed with friends doing nothing with their lives but going to school and working for The Man. This is the American dream? This is the "pursuit of happiness"? And shows are so expensive now, post-plandemic, that one is reduced to trying to win tickets by listening to commercial radio. What a bummer. I mean, woo-hoo! I feel lucky! I'm going to call in and be the "correct" caller, just me and no one else.

Win free tickets to one of these shows
This week KROQ FM, LA's second-rate "alt" rock station, wanted to promote concerts for profit by offering listeners a "chance" to win a pair of passes for an upcoming music festival. Which? The promotion includes a choice of five fests:
  1. Monday: When We Were Young
  2. Tuesday: Just Like Heaven
  3. Wednesday: Cali Vibes

  5. Friday: Aftershock
