Aftershock, Coachella...alt rock fests

I'm just looking for cheap thrills
Imagine a privileged life so tragic there's nothing left to do but attend big alt rock festivals, dance to EDM, and get blitzed with friends doing nothing with their lives but going to school and working for The Man. This is the American dream? This is the "pursuit of happiness"? And shows are so expensive now, post-plandemic, that one is reduced to trying to win tickets by listening to commercial radio. What a bummer. I mean, woo-hoo! I feel lucky! I'm going to call in and be the "correct" caller, just me and no one else.

Win free tickets to one of these shows
This week KROQ FM, LA's second-rate "alt" rock station, wanted to promote concerts for profit by offering listeners a "chance" to win a pair of passes for an upcoming music festival. Which? The promotion includes a choice of five fests:
  1. Monday: When We Were Young
  2. Tuesday: Just Like Heaven
  3. Wednesday: Cali Vibes
  4. Thursday: Coachella
  5. Friday: Aftershock
Contest dates run between March 17, 2025 (St. Paddy's Day), at 8:00 am PT through March 21, 2025, at 7:00 pm PT.

The "correct" caller at (800) 520-1067 (as announced by the on-air personality prior to the cue to call) will, upon verification of eligibility, receive the following prize based on when the call is place.

Winners on March 17, 2025, will receive two (2) GA passes to When We Were Young at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on October 19, 2025. The “prize(s)” is valued at $850.00 and is courtesy of Live Nation.

Lollapalooza 2025: Korn, Olivia, Sabrina

Perry Farrell, man (multi-millionaire) of peace
The great Dave Navarro guitar god stays cool.

Coachella has come and gone. Aftershock is still a ways away. Warped Tour has just swept through town, pulling in big crowds, standing room only. The World Surfing League (WSL) is chugging along in Surf City, USA (Huntington Beach, Orange County). So Fairy Peril's brainchild is hogging all the limelight. Who? Pariss Fariss? The guy who tried to beat up Dave Navarro and ruined the chances of a comeback for the band. Lollapalooza has begun, and Friday night's lineup is something: Is there a crossover in the fanbases of old Korn and new Olivia Rodrigo? (Is she a stripper, or does she just dance that way?) Does Sabrina Carpenter rap to rival and potentially outshine A$AP Rocky? There are 170 acts on nine stages over four days. CBS News Chicago

Deftones: alt-nu metal US tour 2025

Peace and Freedom = nirvana (insightla.org)
A person gets so sick of politics and politicians, business bullsitters and oligarchs, war profiteers and phony anti-war figures that what can one do but follow the words of Berkeley student Mario Savio? He gets to the point, and anyone who cares about freedom and what America's ideals are said to be might agree. Hey, why not? It's March Forth Day.

Deftones "7 Words" (live)
(pppaaatttrrriiikkk1) What's the alternative to metal? Nu metal (aka alt metal), at least it was back in the summer of 2003 when Deftones were live at Big Day Out or Big Day In in Sydney, Australia, down under where the fans go around the fur for their adrenaline. Fast forward to today, when the Deftones are in Los Angeles for a big show at the Forum, aka the Kia.

A call for civil disobedience when freedom is threatened

March Forth Day
March Forth Day (nationaltoday.com)
MARCH FORTH
is an annual unofficial American holiday celebrated on March 4th to encourage everyone to work towards achieving their dreams. It aims to provide an opportunity for people to take calculated risks towards achieving their goals and developing themselves. It is a special day to take a stand against procrastination or the faux reasons that tend to creep into our heads and discourage us from even trying. The name was made up as a homophone of the day "March Fourth." It is also the shortened version of the full name — "March Forth and Do Something Day." More

Eating KORN for suicide prevention

Korn at BMO after supporting SOAD at SSW
Now that Suicide Prevention Month is wrapped up, it's time to listen to some Korn again. They're in concert this weekend in SoCal. Due to leaks of credit card and personal financial information, one woman had her virtual tickets transferred to someone else. TicketMaster is to blame. How doe

September is National Suicide Prevention Month (samhsa.gov) and if you've found a way to hang on, let's see if we could feel, think, and reason our way through this. Unless you're recovering from some attempt, the thoughts are the problem. What reasoning has let to contemplating a permanent solution to a temporary problem? It's all in the thinking. Thinking is a trap, basing decision on unquestioned assumptions. Become aware of the assumption, and all the thinking built on them magically falls away..

September is a month to [listen Guns 'n' Roses' "September Rain," very sad and depressing] and to remember the lives lost to suicide. Millions of people have struggled...
NAMI (nami.org) don't like it. Get involved because awareness is the way to prevention, whereas lack of mindfulness and clear comprehension (sati-sampajanna) is the way to automatic pilot. A dog chases a tail. Does it ever figure out that's its tail? One bite would do it, but it's too fast.

Is there ever a time to raise awareness of this urgent crisis? It's like asking, "When is the best time to plant a tree?" We use this month to shift public perception and spread hope.

Prevention beats trying to cure the spiraling when someone falls into a tailspin. That dog just won't stop. One way is to call (988) LIFE-LINE. Every year, the 988 Lifeline and other mental health organizations and individuals across the U.S. raise awareness of suicide prevention during September.

AFSP.org hails National Suicide Prevention Month and Week. This is a moment in time when we rally the public to create awareness of this leading cause of death and inspire more self-compassion.

If only there were a toolkit for suicide prevention (nimh.nih.gov). There is a Digital Toolkit for Suicide Prevention Month. Join the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to raise awareness by sharing resources that can help one recognize the warning signs of suicide and do something about it.

Metal therapist reacts: SOAD, Korn, Slipknot

Licensed therapist Taylor Palmby,; Seth Auberon, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Therapist reacts to System of a Down's "Aerials" and "B.Y.O.B"
(HeartSupport - Talk About Your Mental Health) March 4th, 2024: Imagine a therapist who uses metal lyrics to discuss the importance of shifting our perspective and releasing control. Most people think the path to a better life involves controlling every possible aspect of our life.

What are these singers singing about?
But the truth is there is so much we will never be able to control. So the best path to a free life is by shifting our perspective to a larger "aerial" overview. This SOAD song calls us to release control and trust that in the big picture everything makes sense.

We are all connected yet many of us live in a state of blissful ignorance until we suddenly realize something isn't right.

Maybe it's politically, maybe it's in our personal life. But once we realize that something isn't right, we have the opportunity to courageously confront that thing to try to enact change.

Taylor reacts to Slipknot's "People=Shit" on Feb. 13, 2024: People often adopt this belief as a way to protect themselves from the pain of loss or disappointment. This belief also prevents us from the power of connection. The song calls us to FIGHT against this belief and take responsibility for creating a better life for ourselves and those around us. #slipknot #coreytaylor #therapist. Cypress Hill, Korn, SOAD, Slipknot, Sin 34, Void

Rick Rubin, Paul McCartney; Cannibal Corpse, Cypress Hill, System of a Down, Slipknot, Sin 34, VOID, DevilDriver, Prophets of Rage; Seth Auberon, Pfc. Sandoval, Pat Mac (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

I'm going to find the Truth or die trying.
Can music really have anything to do with one's spiritual endeavor or meditative practice? What does rock 'n roll have to do with higher ideals in life? One could argue that it has everything to do with them. Metal fans are the most loyal to their music. But hardcore in general attracts a more loyal fan base than pop or passing fads. Hard and heavy metal are moving testaments to a sort of approach to life, to stilling the mind, and to accomplishing something beyond this life. Not everyone might think so. And it would almost certainly be better to listen to classical or world music and chill. But is that what sadhus and shramans, holy hermits and wandering ascetics (yogis and shamans), would do? Someone has to determine to experience the Truth directly and then tell others about, like the Awakened One did. So it shouldn't be seen as so odd that some Buddhist meditators would go in for extreme music.

Cypress Hill: I got shot ("Lick a Shot")

Cypress Hill (cypresshill.com); Sheldon S., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Where's Scandinavian founding member DJ Muggs? (Cypress Hill "DJ Muggs Is Dead")
WARNING: Violent content, profanity unsuitable for listeners! Live at Razlog, Bulgaria Dec. 2009.

(Color is not important)
Lick a shot!
(Oh!)
Ah
I got shot
Comin' at ya
(Fire!)

Zippidy doodah, zippiddy hey
Cry "oh my," wanna get that punk with my AK
And get on the way
On the mission, puffin' on a fat ass jay
Prude, you can't hang
Flashback on the skills when I used to bang

On the corner
I'll warn ya
Gonna roll on ya
Fool
Hit ya with the Golden Rule
Don't turn your back on the street
When I hit that corner, feel the concrete
If you push that button like nothin'
Watch me turn to a psycho
All of a sudden
Blastin' at these fools with a passion
Look at the Glock
When it's time for some action

Let the gat hum
Lick a shot!
So I let the gat hum
Let the gat hum
I got shot!
So I let the gat hum

Sunday morning, wake up it's stormin'
Raindrops fallin' on my head it's pourin'
Cats and dogs, pigs in a wagon
Lookin' for the Afro one that's saggin'
Scooby Doo
And f*ck you, too!
Ploy me?
Don't let your punk ass try me!
It's gonna take more than you
Better call your backup team
And wait for your crew

I'm the one flippin'
Keepin' the clip on my hip
And just watch your back
If you're slippin'
Ooooh
Where did that .22 come from
When the bullet passed through my lung?
I've lost my breath
I'm winded
I've been hit by a slug
That wasn't intended
I hear thunder
I wonder
If a n*gga like me's goin' under
Take a number!

Let the gat hum
Lick a shot!
So I let the gat hum
Let me get home
I got shot!
So I let the gat hum

Had a bad dream, woke up in a casket
Now I can't even get back at the bastard
Bullsh*t!
This pine box
Ain't strong enough to contain the Afro Mox
Critical bell rings
Snapped out the dream
What the f*ck's up with the funny red beam
Pointin' at me? I got no strap, G!
What now? Gotta duck, they're gonna gat me
Bam, I feel numb
Where did the shotgun blast come from?

Let the gat hum
I got shot!
So I let the gat hum
Let me get home
I got shot!
So I let the gat hum
Senseless violence: "I Ain't Goin Out Like That"
Los Angeles is a ghetto, a gangland of great diversity. It isn't race so much as socioeconomic status that defines. Race comes into it, too. Why were Cypress Hill received so well at Lollapalooza?

Let's kick it, ese.

Comin' out the slums, it's the hoodlums!
I'm pullin' my gat out on all you bums
So bring it on when you wanna come fight this outlaw
Kickin' like Billy Ray Cypress Hill
Chill, ill, I'll bust that grill
Grab my gat and load up the steel
And if you wanna get drastic
I'll pull out the plastic Glock, automatic, synthetic
Material burial plots in order
Headed down to the Mexican border
Smokin' that smelly Northern Cali
Gonna put a slug in Captain O'Malley
Ho, hum -- hear the gat come, boooooommmmmm!
Let me see what you'll do
It's a sin to kill a man
But I'll be damned if I don't take a stand

We ain't goin' out like that
We ain't goin' out like that
We ain't goin' out!

I'm high strung, click, I'm sprung
'Cause I don't live from the humdrum
Where I'm from, the gats be smokin'
I'll be damned if you think I'm jokin'
Know that I'll come with the static
Erratic .45 automatic
Screamin' at ya, the red light's beamin' at ya
No need to have to run after
The punk ass hook, in the oven I'll cook
Dig the grave for the one who got played
Now he's under, don't make Stevie Wonder why:
'Cause he'll testify

We ain't goin' out like that
We ain't goin' out like that
We ain't goin' out!

Korn cover live, Oct. 18, 1998, UNO Lakefront Arena - New Orleans, LA

I got you thinkin', "What the f*ck is this?"
Lettin' you know I take care of business
Can I get a witness?
To verify when I depict this
Style that makes you ecstatic
Tragic when I get a poof of the Magic Buddha
When I roll with my crew
I betcha one time can't find my hootah
In my vehicle with the belt unbuckled
Pig rollin' up but he ain't that subtle
Pulled to the curb, so we exchange a few words
But he got me stirred up, enough to grab the handcuffs
I'll huff-n-puff and blow ya head off!

We ain't goin' out like that
We ain't goin' out like that
We ain't goin' out!

Yeahhh! Takin' your disses and dissin' y'all right back
It's the Cypress Hill crew, like we ain't sh*t
You little taco stand rapper, eat a bowl of d*ck up
Then you got my man over here, you can eat a bowl of d*ck up, too
Anybody got beef around the way, yo
EAT A BOWL OF D*CK UP!! GEEEYEAH!!

The new king of Buddhist Thailand (photos)

King officially crowned, boosting regal power

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn was officially crowned Saturday in an elaborate centuries-old royal tradition that last happened seven decades ago.

The coronation represents a renewal of the Thai monarchy's power after the October 2016 death of then Prince Vajiralongkorn's revered father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It also comes amid more than a decade of political strife, including a 2014 military coup and a contentious election less than two months ago.

The beloved former King Bhumibol (RIP)
) The 66-year-old King Vajiralongkorn has served as king for more than two years since he assumed the throne.

But on Saturday, he took the crown from the chief Brahmin, a Hindu priest who has played a guiding part in the mixed Buddhist-Hindu ceremony, during a televised ritual from the Grand Palace.

The 200-year-old, 16-pound (7.3-kg) heavy crown was handed to the king, now known as Rama X, as part of the third and final rite of the coronation ceremony, the presentation of royal regalia.

Everyone loved the former King Bhumibol
Earlier, the new king wore a simple white robe as he entered a small pavilion where he was briefly showered with water from several holy rivers and ponds and other sources.

Other water was poured on him from old royal water vessels. The rite, known as the Royal Purification Ceremony, took place amid music from drums, conch shells and other instruments. Outside the palace, artillery was fired in a salute to the monarch.

This sucks. I'd rather be a playboy again.
"This ceremony is significant to Thailand because the monarchy... is a very important institution of our country and is the soul of our nation," said Naowarat Buakluan, a 41-year-old civil servant.

"If you ask why the ceremony is being held this year when his majesty has already ascended the throne, it's because this is the right moment. Previously we Thais were mourning the loss of our beloved late king."

King Vajiralongkorn inherits a nation in political turmoil, with the powerful army entrenched in government for five years after staging a coup in 2014. More
