When we see clearly, nothing bothers us

Mental proliferation: papañca

Things just keep dividing, growing, proliferating
What is (Pali) papañca or (Sanskrit) prapañca? In Buddhist doctrinal usage, [puh-pon-chuh] signifies the proliferation, expansion, differentiation, "diffuseness," and "manifoldness" of the world. It may refer to the "phenomenal world" in general or to the mental attitude of "worldliness."

In A. IV, 173, it is said: "As far as the field of sixfold sense-impression extends, so far reaches the world of diffuseness (the phenomenal world, papañcassa gati). As far as the world of diffuseness extends, so far extends the field of sixfold sense-impression. Through the complete fading away and cessation of the field of sixfold sense-impression, there comes about the cessation and the coming-to-rest of the world of diffuseness (papañca-nirodho papañca-vupasamo)."

The opposite term nippapañca is another name for nirvana (Pali nibbāna) (S. LIII) in the sense of "freedom from samsaric diffuseness."

Dhammapada 254: "Humankind delights in the diffuseness of the world, whereas the Perfect Ones are free from such diffuseness" (papañcābhiratā pajā, nippapañca tathāgatā).

The eighth of the "thoughts of a great person" (mahā-purisa-vitakka, A. VIII, 30) is: "This Dhamma [Teaching, Truth, Doctrine] is for one who delights in non-diffuseness (nirvana, the unworldly); it is not for one who delights in worldliness (papañca)."

For the psychological sense of "differentiation," see MN 18 (Madhupindika Sutta): "Whatever a person conceives (vitakketi) that one differentiates (papañceti). And what one differentiates, by reason thereof ideas and considerations of differentiation (papañca-saññā-sankhā) arise in one."

On this text and the term papañca, see Dr. Kurt Schmidt in German Buddhist Writers (BPS.lk, Wheel 74/75) p. 61ff. See DN 21 (Sakka's Quest, Wheel 10).

In the Commentaries, one often finds a threefold classification (tanhā-, ditthi-, māna-papañca), which probably means the world's diffuseness created hy craving, wrong views, and conceit. See MN 123; A. IV, 173; A. VI, 14, Sn. 530, 874, 916.

Ven.  Ñānananda Bhikkhu, in Concept and Reality: An Essay on Papañca and Papañca-saññā-sankhā (Kandy 1971, Buddhist Publication Society), suggests that the term refers to the human "tendency towards proliferation in the realm of concepts" and proposes translating the term as "conceptual proliferation," which appears convincing in a psychological context, for example, in two of the texts quoted above (A. IV, 173 and MN 18).

The threefold classification of papañca, by way of craving, wrong views, and conceit is explained by the author as three aspects, or instances, of the foremost of deluded conceptualizations, namely, the ego-concept, the belief in a permanent, unchanging "self" or "soul." See anatta.

Lollapalooza 2025: Korn, Olivia, Sabrina

Perry Farrell, man (multi-millionaire) of peace
The great Dave Navarro guitar god stays cool.

Coachella has come and gone. Aftershock is still a ways away. Warped Tour has just swept through town, pulling in big crowds, standing room only. The World Surfing League (WSL) is chugging along in Surf City, USA (Huntington Beach, Orange County). So Fairy Peril's brainchild is hogging all the limelight. Who? Pariss Fariss? The guy who tried to beat up Dave Navarro and ruined the chances of a comeback for the band. Lollapalooza has begun, and Friday night's lineup is something: Is there a crossover in the fanbases of old Korn and new Olivia Rodrigo? (Is she a stripper, or does she just dance that way?) Does Sabrina Carpenter rap to rival and potentially outshine A$AP Rocky? There are 170 acts on nine stages over four days. CBS News Chicago

Who needs Chappell Roan when we have new Sabrina? "Manchild"
This fest needs more hip-hop

The Thug Life Sutra (discourse)

"Latin Thugs" by Cypress Hill with Mexican B Real, Scandinavian DJ Muggs, and Black Sen Dog, et al.

The Buddha explains how rare a human rebirth is with a powerful simile of a turtle and a floating wooden ring.
Dhr. Seven (trans.), Ashley Wells (ed.), Chiggala Sutta, "A Hole 1," Sacca Samyutta (SN 56.47) via suttafriends.org, Beth Upton (bethupton.com) recommendation
Karma: Giselle Bundchen saves sea turtle
“Meditators, suppose a person were to throw a piece of wood with a single hole in it into the ocean -- and there were a blind turtle in that ocean who popped up only once every hundred years.

“What do you think? Would that blind turtle, popping up once every century, ever poke its neck through the hole in that piece of wood?”

“Only after a very long time, venerable sir, if ever.”

“Meditators, I say, that blind turtle, popping up only once every hundred years, would poke its neck through the hole in that piece of wood sooner than a foolish person who has fallen into [rebirth in] the lower worlds would be reborn again as a human being.

[The thug life]
“Why is that? Meditators, it is because in lower worlds there is no Dharma practice or accruing merit.

“In the lower worlds [subhuman rebirths known as the downfall*], they just prey on each other, preying on the weak.

“Why is that? It is because they have not seen the Four Noble Truths. What four [ennobling truths]?
  1. the ennobling truth of suffering
  2. the ennobling truth of the origin of suffering
  3. the ennobling truth of the end of suffering
  4. the ennobling truth of the path that leads to the end of all suffering.
I look nothing like a turtle! (Mitch McConnell)
“Therefore, meditators, make an effort to understand: ‘This is suffering.’ Make an effort to understand: ‘This is the origin of suffering.’ Make an effort to understand: ‘This is the end of suffering.’

“Make an effort to understand: ‘This is the path that leads to the end of all suffering.’”

LUST IS LIKE FIRE: Sutra (MN 75), Part 2

Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation) (eds.), Magandiya Sutra: "To Magandiya" (excerpt) (MN 75 PTS: M i 501) based on Ven. Thanissaro (trans.), Wisdom Quarterly

SEE PART 1. ...When this was said, Magandiya the wandering ascetic said to the Blessed One (the Buddha):

"Teacher Gotama, it's amazing, it's astounding how this, too, is well-stated: 'Freedom from disease is the foremost fortune. Nirvana is the foremost ease!'

"I have heard this said by previous wandering ascetics in the lineage of our teachers: 'Freedom from disease is the foremost fortune. Nirvana is the foremost ease.' We are in agreement."

"Magandiya, as for what you have heard said by previous wandering ascetics in the lineage of your teachers — 'Freedom from disease is the foremost fortune. Nirvana is the foremost ease!' — which freedom from disease is that and which nirvana?"

When this was asked, the wandering ascetic Magandiya, rubbing his body with his hands answered, "This [body] is that freedom from disease, Teacher Gotama, and this [body] is that nirvana. For I am now free from disease, happy, and nothing afflicts me."

"Magandiya, it is just as if there were a man blind from birth unable to see black... white... blue... yellow... red... or pink objects, who could see neither even nor uneven places, nor stars, the sun, or the moon. He hears a man with good eyesight saying, 'How wonderful, good sirs, is this white cloth — beautiful, spotless, and clean!'

"He goes in search of something white. Then [sales]man fools him with a grimy, stained rag: 'Here, good man, is a white cloth — beautiful, spotless, and clean!'

"The blind man takes it and puts it on. Having put it on, gratified, he exclaims words of gratification, such as, 'How wonderful, good sirs, is this white cloth — beautiful, spotless, and clean!'

"What do you think, Magandiya: When that blindman took up the grimy, stained rag and put it on and, gratified, exclaimed words of gratification, 'How wonderful, good sirs, is this white cloth — beautiful, spotless, and clean!' did he do so knowing and seeing, or out of faith in the [sales]man with good eyesight?"

"Teacher Gotama, of course, he did it neither knowing nor seeing but out of faith in the [sales]man with good eyesight."

"Magandiya, in the same way, the wandering ascetics of other schools are blind and without vision. Without knowing freedom from disease, without seeing [actual] nirvana, they still say:

Freedom from disease is the foremost fortune.
Nirvana [non-clinging] is the foremost ease!

"This verse was stated by previous worthy ones [arahants], who themselves were fully awakened:

Freedom from disease is the foremost fortune.
Nirvana [non-clinging] is the foremost ease!
The ennobling eightfold path is the foremost of paths
Leading to the Deathless, secure from all suffering.

"But now it has gradually become a verse uttered by ordinary people [who do not themselves know and see].

The body
"This body, Magandiya, is a disease, a cancer, an arrow, an affliction, and painful. Yet you say, referring to this body -- which is a disease, a cancer, an arrow, an affliction, and painful -- 'This is that freedom from disease, Teacher Gotama, and this is that nirvana,' for you do not have the noble vision to know freedom from disease and see nirvana."

"Teacher Gotama, I am convinced that you can teach me the Dharma [Truth] in such a way that I would know freedom from disease, that I would see nirvana."

"Magandiya, it is as if there were a blindman, blind from birth, who could see neither black... white... blue... yellow... [nor] red objects... the sun or the moon. His friends, companions, and relatives take him to the doctor. The doctor makes a medicine for him. But in spite of this medicine, his eyesight does not appear or grow clear.

"What do you think, Magandiya: Would that doctor reap only but weariness and disappointment?"

"Yes, Teacher Gotama."

"In the same way, Magandiya, if I were to teach you the Dharma — 'This is that freedom from disease, this is that nirvana' — and you for your part did not know freedom from disease nor see nirvana, that would be wearisome for me, that would be troublesome for me."

"[Yet,] Teacher Gotama, I am convinced that you can teach me the Dharma in such a way that I would know freedom from disease, that I would see nirvana."

"Magandiya, it is as if there were a blindman, blind from birth, who could neither see black... white... blue... yellow... [nor] red objects... the sun or the moon. Now suppose a certain man were to take a grimy, stained rag and fool him, saying, 'Here, good man, is a white cloth — beautiful, spotless, and clean!' The blindman takes it and puts it on.

"Then his friends, companions, and relatives take him to the doctor. The doctor makes medicine for him: purges from above and purges from below, ointments and counter-ointments, and treatments through the nose. Thanks to this medicine, his eyesight appears and grows clear. Then together with the arising of his eyesight, he abandons whatever passion and delight he felt for that grimy, stained rag. He regards that [sales]man as an enemy and no friend at all and thinks that he deserves to be killed:

"Goodness, how long have I been fooled, cheated, and deceived by that [sales]man and his grimy, stained rag, saying to me: 'Here, good man, is a white cloth — beautiful, spotless, and clean!'?"

"Magandiya, in the same way, if I were to teach you the Dharma — 'This is that freedom from disease and this is that nirvana' — and you for your part were to know that freedom from disease and see that nirvana, then together with the arising of your vision, you would abandon whatever passion and delight you felt with regard to the Five Aggregates clung to as self.

"And it would occur to you, 'My gosh, how long have I been fooled, cheated, and deceived by this mind? For in clinging,
  1. it was just form being clung to...
  2. it was just feeling being clung to...
  3. it was just perception being clung to...
  4. it was just formations being clung to...
  5. it was just consciousness being clung to.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The question may arise, isn't it an actual soul, self, or ego that is doing the clinging to the aggregates? No. In an ultimate sense, it is form (the Four Elements) that forms (the gross or subtle physical basis). Feeling feels. Perception perceives. Mental formations form. And consciousness is conscious.]

"Dependent on clinging as a requisite condition, there arises becoming [rebirth]... birth... aging and death... sorrow, lamentation, pains, disappointment, and despair. Thus arises this entire mass of suffering/disappointment.'"

"Teacher Gotama, I am convinced that you can teach me the Dharma in such a way that I might rise up from this seat cured of blindness."

"Magandiya, in that case, associate with noble friends [enlightened/awakened beings]. When you associate with noble friends, you will hear the noble [ennobling] Dharma. When you hear the noble Dharma, you will practice the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma [practice this path in accordance with the Truth].

"When you practice the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, you will know and see for yourself: 'These things are diseases, cancers, arrows, and here is where diseases, cancers, and arrows cease without remainder. With the cessation of clinging [to these aggregates] comes the cessation of becoming.

"With the cessation of becoming comes the cessation of birth. With the cessation of birth comes the cessation of aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, suffering, and all disappointment. Such comes about the cessation of this entire mass of suffering/disappointment."

When this was said, Magandiya the wandering ascetic exclaimed: "Magnificent, Teacher Gotama, magnificent! It is just as if one were to place upright what had been overturned, or reveal what had been hidden, or point the way to one who were lost, or to carry a lamp into the darkness so that those with eyes could see forms!

"In the same way has Teacher Gotama — through many lines of reasoning — made the Dharma clear. I go to Teacher Gotama for guidance, go to the Dharma for guidance, and to the [Noble] Sangha for guidance! Let me obtain the going forth [ordination into the Buddhist Monastic Order] in Teacher Gotama's presence! Let me obtain admission!"

"Magandiya, anyone who has previously belonged to another order and who desires the going forth and admission into this Dharma and Discipline [Teaching and Path], must first undergo probation for four months. If, at the end of four months, the monastics feel so moved, they give him the going forth and admit one into the monastic state. But I recognize distinctions among individuals in this matter."

"Teacher Gotama, if anyone who has previously belonged to another order and desires the going forth and admission in this Dharma and Discipline must first undergo probation for four months and if, at the end of four months, the monastics feel so moved, they give one the going forth and admission to the monastic state, then I will remain on probation for four years! If, at the end of four years, the monastics feel so moved, let them give me the going forth and admission into the monastic state."

Then Magandiya the wandering ascetic received the going forth and admission in the Blessed One's presence. And in no long time — dwelling withdrawn, secluded, heedful, ardent, and resolved — reached and remained in the supreme goal of the supreme life, for which nobles rightly go forth from home into the home-free life, knowing and seeing for himself here and now:

"Rebirth is ended, the supreme life has been fulfilled, the task is done. There is no more of this to come for the sake of this world." Thus Venerable Magandiya [the Buddhist wandering ascetic] became another one of the awakened ones (arahants).

"Dear God"? (video)

Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly; XTC (COMMENTARY)
"When I am silent, I fall into that place where everything is music." - Rumi

Hey, mouth off and I'll smote ye!
XTC's Skylarking spawned the controversial track "Dear God," which was originally issued as the B-side of the album's first single

Interest in the song saw the U.S. album re-issued with "Dear God" included, and the new version of the LP sold a quarter million copies in the U.S., reviving the band's commercial fortunes and earning critical accolades.

"Dear God" lyrics
Why don't Buddhists believe in God...or do they? (thankingthespoon.com)
.
Dear God, hope you got the letter, and I pray you can make it better down here. I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer, but all the people that you made in your image, see them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but I feel that I should be heard loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears, and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God, I can't believe in you. Did you make disease and the diamond blue? Did you make mankind after we made you? And the devil, too?

I'm getting to it later. I'm busy right now.
Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but your name is on a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look, and all the people that you made in your image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't and so do you, dear God, I can't believe in, I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound

That Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax, and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon my sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in it's you, dear God.

Bjork, what did you attack her?

"Deus"?
(Björk) Deus ("God") from The Sugarcubes before the singer became a famous soloist
"No one 'saves' us, no one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path; buddhas only point the way." The path we walk is our actions, our karma, the results of which will take us places. What is the karma to the end of suffering? The Noble Eightfold Path.
.
When Bjork was in The Sugarcubes she sang, "Deus does not exist." "Deus" is God's Latin name, of course, from which we derive diva, divine, divinity, borrowing the root from the Sanskrit deva, a "shining one" as the Buddha explained.

Buddhism does believe in God (Maha Brahma), in many Gods (brahmas) and gods (devas), and many Buddhists can believe or not, worship or not. (The route is the meditative absorptions).

Ultimately, however, the Great God or countless other gods, who themselves are not enlightened and liberated from suffering and rebirth, cannot lead us to enlightenment or even point the way. They have a much better time than humans, on the whole. But they may not even be able to tell us how we can get to be reborn where they are. They can say how they did it, to the extent they know the karma (actions) and root causes.

Be here now at every moment like Ziggy.
A buddha (fully enlightened teacher) knows the route to all rebirth-destinations. In the book The 31 Planes of Existence, a treatise on ancient Buddhist cosmology, it is laid out. Do you wish for rebirth in God's company? That's called "Brahma's Retinue" and is rather lowly.

Do you wish to be a God, a brahma or "supreme one"? That's in there. How about a "messenger angel"? That's very low but still above human, a state known as a gandharva or gandhabba, the lowest rank of deva, the heavenly musicians. Why not aspire to rebirth as a beautiful, long-lived, and influential human? That will be very short life compared to any of the deva lives. There are much worse places to land than the human state or manussya loka. Just look at the wild animal world or the ghosts and ghouls.

Wheel of Life (E. C. Baptist)
This human plane offers one advantage over all others -- the ease with which it is possible to attain enlightenment from here, midway between luxurious hedonism and woeful suffering. The devas in general have much better strands of pleasure, so much so that they're intoxicated with parties and good times, rarely allowing themselves to perceive any suffering or shortcoming to the endless round of rebirth...until they fall from their perches/stations. But then it's a little bit late to do anything about it. Now is the time.

The Buddha saw all of these destinations and declared that nirvana -- which is neither a location nor a temporary state but "the unconditioned element" -- is the best, highest above all, the only true refuge and safety. Until then, choose rebirth-destinations wisely. We're choosing all the time by our karma.

Why we argue (Parable of the Blind Men)

John D. Ireland (translator), Wisdom Quarterly edit, Inspired Utterances (Ud. 6.4)
Buddhist novice meditating above the tangled canopy (Mattravel/Flickr.com)

Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at the multi-millionaire's monastery.

At that time there were a number of recluses and brahmins, wanderers of various sects, living around Savatthi. They were of various views, of various beliefs, of various opinions. And they relied for their support [by reasoning] based on their various views.

  • There were some recluses and brahmins who asserted and held this view: "The world is eternal; only this is true, any other (view) is false."
  • There were some recluses and brahmins who asserted: "The world is not eternal; only this is true, any other (view) is false."
  • There were some who asserted: "The world is finite...
  • The world is infinite...
  • The life-principle and the body are the same...
  • The life-principle and the body are different...
  • The Tathagata [person who has attained liberation from samsara, such as the Buddha] exists beyond death [of the body]...
  • The Tathagata does not exist beyond death...
  • The Tathagata both exists and does not exist beyond death...
  • The Tathagata neither exists nor does not exist beyond death; only this is true, any other (view) is false."

And they lived quarrelsome, disputing, and wrangling, wounding one another with verbal darts, saying:

  • "Dharma [liberating truth] is like this
  • Dharma is not like that!
  • Dharma is not like this
  • Dharma is like that!"

Then a number of Buddhist monastics, having put on their robes in the forenoon and taken their bowls and outer cloaks, entered Savatthi for almsfood. Having walked in Savatthi for almsfood and returned after the meal, they approached the Buddha, prostrated themselves, sat down to one side, and said:

"At present, venerable sir, there are a number of recluses and brahmins, wanderers of various sects, living around Savatthi. They are of various views... saying: 'Dharma is like this!... Dharma is like that!'"

[The Buddha replied:] "The wanderers of other sects, disciples, are blind, not seeing. They do not know what is [karmically] beneficial [in terms of practice now and future results from profitable and unprofitable actions willed, performed, and accumulated]; they do not know what is harmful. They do not know what is Dharma; they do not know what is non-Dharma.

"Not knowing what is beneficial and what is harmful, not knowing what is Dharma and what is non-Dharma, they are quarrelsome... saying: 'Dharma is like this!... Dharma is like that!'

"Formerly, disciples, there was a certain king in this very city of Savatthi. And that king addressed a man: 'Come now, my good man, bring together all those persons in Savatthi who have been blind from birth.'

"'Yes, your majesty,' that man replied, and after detaining all the blind people in Savatthi, he approached the king and said, 'All the blind people in Savatthi have been brought together, your majesty.'

"'Now, my good man, show the blind people an elephant.'

"'Very well, your majesty,' the man replied to the king, and he presented an elephant to the blind people, saying, 'This, blind people, is an elephant.'

"To some of the blind people he presented the head of the elephant, saying, 'This is an elephant.' To some he presented an ear of the elephant, saying, 'This is an elephant.' To some he presented a tusk... the trunk... the body... the foot... the hindquarters... the tail... the tuft at the end of the tail, saying, 'This is an elephant.'

"Then, disciples, the man, having shown the elephant to the blind people, went to the king and said, 'The blind people have been shown the elephant, your majesty. Now do as you see fit.' Then the king approached those blind people and said, 'Have you been shown the elephant?'

"'Yes, your majesty, we have been shown the elephant.'

"'Tell me, blind people, what is an elephant like?'

"Those blind people who had been shown the head of the elephant replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a water jar.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the ear of the elephant replied. 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a winnowing basket.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the tusk of the elephant replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a ploughshare.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the trunk replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a plough pole.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the body replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a storeroom.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the foot replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a post.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the hindquarters replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a mortar.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the tail replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a pestle.'

"Those blind people who had been shown the tuft at the end of the tail replied, 'An elephant, your majesty, is just like a broom.'

"Saying 'An elephant is like this, an elephant is not like that! An elephant is not like this, an elephant is like that!' they fought each other with their fists. And the king was delighted (with the spectacle).

"Even so, disciples, are those wanderers of various sects blind, not seeing... saying, "Dharma is like this!... Dharma is like that!'"

Then, on realizing the significance, the Buddha made this inspired utterance on this occasion:

Some recluses and brahmins, so called,
Are deeply attached to their own views;
People who only see one side of things
Engage in quarrels and disputes.
