The Buddhist Dark Night of the 'Soul'

(Buddha's Wisdom) Breakdown or breakthrough.
Dark Night of the Soul
The Dark Night of the Soul
(Spanish La noche oscura del alma) is a phase of passive purification in the mystical development of an individual's spirit, according to the 16th-century Spanish mystic and Catholic poet St. John of the Cross.

St. John describes the concept in his treatise Dark Night (Noche Oscura), commenting on his poem of the same name.

John of the Cross, 1656
It follows after the second phase, the illumination in which God's presence is felt, but this presence is not yet stable.

The author himself did not give any title to his poem, which together with this commentary and the Ascent of Mount Carmel (Subida del Monte Carmelo) forms a treatise on the active and passive purification of the senses and the spirit, leading to mystical union [1] or "yoga" through samadhi.

El Greco "View of Toledo" (Google Art Project)
In modern times, the phrase "dark night of the soul" has become a popular phrase to describe a crisis of faith or a difficult and painful period in one's life.

The poem
Dating and subject: The poem of St. John of the Cross, in eight stanzas of five lines each, narrates the journey of the individual (soul, personality, persona, ego, self, spirit) to mystical union with God or the Godhead (Brahman). More

The Dark Night of the Soul
By St. John of the Cross

I. In a dark night,
With anxious love inflamed,
O, happy lot!
Forth unobserved I went,
My house being now at rest.

II. In darkness and in safety,
By the secret ladder, disguised,
O, happy lot!
In darkness and concealment,
My house being now at rest.

III. In that happy night,
In secret, seen of none,
Seeing nought myself,
Without other light or guide
Save that which in my heart was burning.

IV. That light guided me
More surely than the noonday sun
To the place where He was waiting for me,
Whom I knew well,
And where none appeared.

V. O, guiding night;
O, night more lovely than the dawn;
O, night that hast united
The lover with His beloved,
And changed her into her love.

VI. On my flowery bosom,
Kept whole for Him alone,
There He reposed and slept;
And I cherished Him, and the waving
Of the cedars fanned Him.

VII. As His hair floated in the breeze
That from the turret blew,
He struck me on the neck
With His gentle hand,
And all sensation left me.

VIII. I continued in oblivion lost,
My head was resting on my love;
Lost to all things and myself,
And, amid the lilies forgotten,
Threw all my cares away. Source

Awakened people born into toxic families

Why are so many spiritually sensitive people born into toxic or dysfunctional families?

In this profound talk by Alan Watts, we explore why this painful paradox is not a cosmic mistake. It is a hidden gift.

Learn why our most difficult wounds are not a problem to be solved, but the very soil our deepest spiritual strength grows from.

This video explores the idea that "real awakening comes through fire," not comfort. We reframe the toxic family as the "grain of sand" that forces the oyster to create a pearl to coat it.

Discover how this "friction" is the key to breaking generational cycles, forcing us to question what love really is and discover our "true self" when the programming we inherited is broken.

This is a complete guide to understanding the past, healing ancestral wounds, and finally realizing that our family was not our enemy, but our most difficult teacher.

Learn how to transform the pain inherited into the wisdom, raised consciousness, and freedom that will define our lives.
If this perspective shifts the world, please give the video a thumbs up and subscribe for more spiritual content to help heal and live a more conscious life.

We are the Irish Paddystinians

Protest in solidarity with Palestinians, Shannon airport Sept. 2024 (Emilija Jefremova/Reuters)

Irish pro-Palestine activists embrace ‘Paddystinian’ term as badge of honor
(Ireland Correspondent Rory Carroll, The Guardian, May 25, 2025)
Irish Lex (@wanderrlex,Instagram)
Believed to have originated as an insult by [Jewish Zionist] Israel supporters, neologism is now used to campaign against war in Gaza.

The term was coined to disparage Ireland’s solidarity with Palestine but has been adopted as a badge of honor that now adorns T-shirts, hoodies, pins, and social media bios: Welcome to Paddystine, home of the Paddystinians.

Irish activists have embraced the neologism as a galvanizing term to campaign against Zionist Israel’s war on Gaza and to pressure the Irish government to do more to [intervene to] end the conflict.

Kneecap dares to annoy UK Zionists
The belief that it was originally intended as an insult by Israel supporters has fueled its spread on TikTok and other platforms where Irish people proclaim themselves “Paddystinians” and also, in a repurposing of the old-fashioned female name Biddy, “Biddystinians.”

“It was being used as a negative,” Ross McGann, who has nearly 40,000 followers on TikTok, said this week. “Once I heard that I thought: ‘Nah, we can flip this around.’ It’s a very Irish thing to do – you take an insult and you flip it back.” More

Trouble in Northern Ireland, UK: riots

Northern Ireland riots: Masked protesters set fire to buildings as violence spills across towns
(Global News) June 12, 2025: As clashes between [colonial] police and rioters continued for a third consecutive night in Northern Ireland [ruled by England], the violence spread to the town of Larne.

Masked individuals broke into a local leisure center with bricks and set fire to the lobby while swimming lessons were taking place. The unrest began Monday in Ballymena, after two 14-year-old Romanian boys were accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

What began as a vigil to show support for the alleged victim turned into chaos when some commenced in destruction of properties. Dozens of police officers have been injured since Monday, with authorities expressing suspicion the attacks are racially-motivated “hate crimes.”

Filipino nationals living in Ballymena shared their harrowing experience of what happened when masked looters came banging at their door. For more info, please go to globalnews.ca

Punk Rock in SLC (film) and Kalama Sutta

Punk rock made sense to rebels
SLC Punk!
is an American comedy-drama film written and directed by James Merendino. The film centers around Steven "Stevo" Levy, a college graduate and punk living in Salt Lake City during the mid-1980s. SLC Punk!, which was released in 1998, was chosen as the opening-night feature at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival [2]. Merendino created the film based on his experience growing up in Mormon-heavy Salt Lake City. Although the film is not autobiographical, Merendino has said that many characters were based on people he knew [3]. More

What's so punk about Buddhism? Well, it is anti-authoritarian, into direct experience rather than intermediary priests. It is about questioning and going "against the stream." Just ask punk Buddhist Noah Levine, his Buddhist dad Stephen Levine, or his long-time teacher Jack Kornfield.

[Mormon] Jesus saves? Buddhism is all lies? - Are you envious of lay people, and do you regret?
Western monk explains his choice of Theravada. - How can we know and be sure? Bodhi

Not until I was sure did I claim to know and see.
It is so sad to hear this last man's words. The same accusations were hurled at the Buddha in his day by Brahmins and doubters. While it may sound reasonable to us as we assume, it is completely wrong. The Buddha DID NOT follow his own thinking or take a "best guess" and the meaning of life. It was about awakening to the Truth he could never have imagined. It has so little to do with "thinking" and so much to do with directly experiencing. But he did not stop there. He verified again and again and taught a path of verification and purification. Buddhism is not a belief system, as much as people try to treat it that way or make a "religion" out of it. It is a path-of-practice, a set of instructions. One must practice (walk) the path to verify it for oneself. There is nothing to believe or accept on blind faith. There is everything to investigate and see for oneself. What is the most "punk" sutra? That would have to be the Kalama Sutta, the Buddha's invitation to self-inquiry. "Don't believe anything I say just because I say it -- or even that of your teachers or books or traditions. But you yourselves must know and see" is the gist of what the Buddha is saying to the Kalamas, a group of people who rightly doubted him as "just another teacher about to exalt himself and condemn others." The Buddha shocked them when he didn't do that but still managed to teach them the Dharma.

How can anyone know anything?
The Buddha gives a standard: Start from what you
already know to be true from your own experience.
In the Kalama Sutta the Buddha lists the criteria by which any sensible person can decide what to accept as true or not: Do not blindly believe religious teachings, he tells the Kalamas, just because they are claimed to be true, or even through the application of various methods or techniques.

Direct knowledge grounded in one's own experience can be called upon [as the deciding factor]. The Buddha advises that the words of the wise should be heeded and taken into account, but he does not propose passive acceptance.

Rather, the Buddha promotes constant questioning and personal testing to identify truths that verifiably reduce one's own disappointment, suffering, and misery (dukkha) and that of others.

The Kalama Sutta (also called the Kesamutti Sutta) states [3]:
  • Do not go on what has been acquired by repeated hearing (anussava), nor upon tradition (paramparā), nor upon rumor (itikirā), nor upon what is written in scriptures (piṭaka-sampadāna), nor upon surmising (takka-hetu), nor upon axioms (naya-hetu)... More

Pro-genocide, pro-Israel position (UCLA)

UPDATE: Violent pro-Israel counter-protester at UCLA caught on camera beating student
(The Hill) May 16, 2024: WASHINGTON, DC (the largest American city outside of the USA). Briahna Joy Gray and Robby Soave discuss an investigation into a right-wing pro-Israel Zionist Jewish Israeli-American teen from Beverly Hills, who went to counter-protest at UCLA. He has now been caught on tape committing felony assault, but his parents stand behind him. He was just preparing for his trip to Israel to join the IDF. #ucla #counterprotest

It's important to listen and to understand the opposition. If this gentleman wants to be a pro-genocide, pro-militarism, pro-Israel, pro-Zionism, pro-apartheid troll, let that be his choice. He may use his white male privilege to be an influencer, moneymaker, or comedian at others' expense. Let him. Censorship is for others, not us.

If PM Bibi wants to come on and talk about how he enjoys killing babies and hates Palestinians for making him kill them in the spirit of PM Golda Meir, we would welcome him.

We have Yankee supporters like this guy? Nice!
We'd like to ask him a few things. There really are frat boys like this on campus, fully in support of the police, riot tricks and tactics, sexism, racism, ignorance, and everything wrong with our world.

Will Danny Mullen look back on his behavior with pride and still think it's funny as the world descends into greater turmoil?

Valerie Bertinelli-Van Halen live, LA (4/15)

Look, Donny and Marie did it. So why can't we? - That's different! They were Mormons.

Look, Everyone! I'm a "cover girl" now!
Valerie Bertinelli-Van Halen isn’t one to hold her feelings close to the vest. The “One Day at a Time” TV star believes in the power of connection — connecting with fans to help her heal.

[After all, she lost her rockstar husband, the world-renowned guitarist Eddie Van Halen (shown above shredding on guitar), RIP, with whom she fathered and raised Wolfgang Van Halen].

Incest laws won't stop us (pagesix)
She is doing that through Indulge: Delicious and Decadent Dishes to Enjoy and Share, her cookbook. The New York Times bestselling author’s new book is a collection of 100 recipes to “nourish the body and the soul.”

She shares recipes for dishes like garlic confit LT, oven-“fried” okra, mangled animal guts in casing, and olive rotten dairy bites, spaghetti al limone, smelly patties with quick-pickled vegetables, cow limbs with bearnaise sauce, and chocolate peanut butter dates.

Twins? Inside Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli's '80s romance (pagesix.com)
It's probably safe to say Valerie taught Eddie everything he knew about everything except guitar.
.
Eddie? Eddie who? (No you didn't, Dave!)
“It’s mainly a cookbook, but an extension of Enough Already,” Bertinelli said of her 2023 book. “I wrote that after my mother and Ed (Eddie Van Halen) died. They passed away a year and a half apart. I was going through a lot of grief and going through a marriage that wasn’t working. I was going through a lot.”

She said she didn’t love anything with her life. She felt like she was “drowning and had forgotten how to swim.”

Then, being Italian, she returned to the kitchen little by little. “I started writing recipes, and I started to get excited,” she said. “I was talking about food the way I had never talked about before.”

She’ll talk about her latest feeble attempt at fame as a chef and her struggles on a book tour that stops at All Saints Church in Pasadena at 7:00 pm Monday, April 15, 2024.

The Vroman’s-sponsored event is ticketed (minimum $41 with book). “This is the biggest book tour I’ve ever done,” she said.

“I can’t wait to meet everybody. Since my last book, I’ve had a great rapport with a lot of people in my social media community. I have really terrific people who follow me on Instagram and Threads.” More
