We found the new Dukkha Girl! (WQ search)
Wisdom Quarterly's
own Dukkha Girl is back (in a new incarnation after we scoured the country).

Q: DG, what will you be doing for the 250th 4th of July celebration?

Listening to a lot of Lana [Del Rey] because she really gets it.

"It"?

Dukkha, disappointment, never being satisfied or getting fulfillment out of relationships and drugs and experiences, suffering.

So what you're saying is that you're a Dangerous Girl?

Pretty much, because I actually believe it. I believe we can find satisfaction and ultimate fulfillment in romantic love relationships. But you know what? It's never worked! Never.

So you mean the Buddha was right?

Why, what did he say?

He said that all existence bears "Three Marks" or characteristics: All things are impermanent, unsatisfactory (disappointing), and impersonal.

Well, I don't about impersonal, but disappointing for sure. I take it very personally. But come to think of it, they are all impermanent, too, like not even lasting till death do us part.

Why is Lana so blue, so sad, Dukkha Girl?

Finding the right boy: "Shades of Blue Cool"
(LanaDelReyVEVO) Daddy issues with music video maker Lana: "Shades of Cool" He unfixable!

She can't find the right relationship, but she keeps searching, and she used to have weight issues, so she's hyper-sensitive about her looks.

But, Dukkha Girl, what about "Summertime Sadness"?

What about it? It's summer; you're sad; it's pretty straight forward.

No, the big Lana Del Rey hit song, don't you want to post that one?

That is so played out! She has hundreds of better songs. No wonder Taylor Swift rips her off so much.

Why does Taylor copy Lana so much?
"Pretty When You Cry"?

Dysfunctional solution: Get high by the beach

LYRICS, HIGH BY THE BEACH: High, high/ High, high// Boy, look at you lookin' at me/ I know you know how I feel/ Lovin' you is hard, bein' here's harder/ You take the wheel/ I don't wanna do this anymore/ It's so surreal/ I can't survive/ If this is all that's real// CHORUS: All I wanna do is get high by the beach/ Get high by the beach, get high/ All I wanna do is get by by the beach/ Get by, baby, baby, bye-bye/ The truth is I never bought into your BS/ When you would pay tribute to me 'cause I know that/ All I wanted to do was get high by the beach/ Get high, baby, baby, bye-bye// Boy, look at you lookin' at me/ I know you don't understand/ You could be a bad motherfather/ But that don't make you a man/ Now you're just another one of my problems/ Because you got out of hand/ We won't survive/ We're sinkin' into the sand// CHORUS// Lights, camera, acción/ I'll do it on my own/ Don't need your money, money/ To get me what I want/ Lights, camera, acción/ I'll do it on my own/ Don't need your money, money/ To get me what I want// CHORUS// High/ High/ High/ High// Anyone can start again/ Not through love, but through revenge/ Through the fire, we're born again/ Peace by vengeance brings the end

She's our summertime girl!

The most punk rock girl in the world

HELP WANTED: Apply to be the new DG
Long ago there used to be a writer calling herself "Dukkha Girl." She disappeared, came back, then faded away again. We loved her. Where is she today? One can only imagine a fate of suburban motherhood for her, or a rural life with cats, but maybe, just maybe, she became a nun, forsaking the lower life of a householder for the exalted life of one striving for the ultimate goal. Who knows?

Punk Rock Bowling isn't as good as the museum
We're sure she'll eventually be in touch and tell us. In the meantime, there's an attention [solicitor] we can imagine in the role, now that she's been excluded, branded a total "poser," and banned. It's gotten so bad, she lost her business.

Punk Rock Dukkha Girl?
Oh, beloved vegan yogini with such a penchant for makeup and marriage, what will become of her? She was at Cali Vibes scrouging up influencer-sponsorships to become the next MrsBeast, getting up early for yoga, and eating lots of Cena Vegan and other treats. Now that she brought her spikey hair down, no one recognizes or pays much attention to her. And that has to be galling because, bowling or not, is she not the MOST punk rock girl in the world...was? Oh, Erin, will you never learn? For all anyone knows, she could be a girl genius like this candid camera clip.

Happy? Miserable? Opinionated? Apply to be the new Dukkha Girl

Help wanted. Inquire within (in the Comments)
No one imagines Erin could be a reliable correspondent for the despondent, a reporter of all that is dukkha in life. But someone can. Why not you? Are you drawn to Daria, to snarky comments mumbled under your breath, wishing to get your message to millions. Yes, Wisdom Quarterly has millions of views. Look it up.

There are so many voices that need to be heard.
Great writing skills not a prerequisite, nor is knowledge of philosophy or religion, just opinions. Remember that episode of Family Guy when Peter got a job at the local news station for a weekly segment "What Really Grinds My Gears"? Like that. Do that. Opine. We'll edit and punch it up, make it relevant to the true extent of dukkha.

QUALIFICATIONS: Opinionated, snarky, willful, mad. Gender: open. Race: open. Religion if any: open. Writing skill level: average. Health: have a pulse. Psych: sass. Location: US or expat in Asia. Meditation practice: preferred. Musical taste: alt. Political leanings: open. Sense of humor: a must. Favorite color: should be purple. How to apply: Send writing sample.
Maybe it's always just been about fashion

What does punk rock have to do with Buddhism?

What is higher than faith? Knowing-and-seeing
In the Kalama or Kesamutti Sutta, we find the Buddha explaining to the Kalama people NOT to believe, not to trust in tradition or texts, but to question, to go against the stream of the world, inviting them to come see for themselves. This path, the Dharma of Awakening, invites investigation. It is for the wise, those wishing to see for themselves without relying on anyone else to say how reality is or is not. The Buddha, the Awakened One, pointed out the path of knowing-and-seeing for oneself. All of this is very much in line with punk rock, the original impetus for a movement that went against all the BS and the music industry's profit-motive. It was rugged, real, and about personal experience and self-realization, not "going along to get along," not blind faith, not complicity with a religion. Buddhism in many ways is not a religion. It has become one, it gets treated as one, but that is not what the Buddha was talking about. There is a path-of-practice that leads to freedom, liberation, an end to all rebirth and suffering. Most people will not see it, not let go, not give up the lesser good in hand for a higher good yet to be attained. What did the Buddha say? Going Along with the Stream

Rise of ‘Female Loneliness’ (Dukkha Girl)

This sucks so friggin bad and I'm all alone.
We miss our beloved, adopted (Shanghai victim) correspondent Dukkha Girl. She was on, she was gone, she came back, and now who knows where she is? So here's a replacement, Shoe0nHead, a clever allusion to that time someone asked the Zen master a koan and he "answered" by putting a sandal on his head and walking out. Ha.

But in a serious vein, if people only knew what dukkha is, they would have much more respect for what the Buddha found. What he taught, which made him so famous, is how to bring all suffering to an end. "Impossible!," people say, but it is possible, and a fraction of beings have already done it, giving the world the Noble Sangha, the community of those on the stages of awakening.

We would like to leave the term dukkha untranslated -- and nowadays not attempt to define "girl" either because of the libcon rancor and feminist hypocrisy that tends to engender -- because it's a multivalent Sanskrit word, having a range of meanings, with many shades and intensities.

Does the Buddha have advice for worldlings?
Translated, we prefer "disappointment," to show that it is much more than the common "suffering." Suffering sounds so bad that most of think we don't have that. But Tan Geoff is right to translate it as "stress" rather than distress, because even eustress (positive stress as comes from excitement) is included in this umbrella term. The best definition is long and comes from the Buddha:

It is not getting what we want, getting what we don't want, and all forms of ill and unease. It is pain, it is sadness, it is loss, it is ultimately that lack of fulfillment that drives us on to keep hoping and searching (craving) even though it continuously leaves us dissatisfied and off kilter and out of sorts.

No one gets me, except Grumpy Cats. He does.
The word dukkha at its root refers to an oxcart wheel that is off-center and therefore providing a bumpy, wonky, wobbly, uncertain, and unpleasant sometimes painful ride. All of life -- in all states of existence -- is beset by tinges of this. Hey, but what about the heavens? Even there, danger exists. They are not eternal, and they are certainly not fulfillment as they have been sold to us. They are temporary bliss, exalted, and that's the higher ones. The lower sensual ones seem little better than a good time on earth. Just ask the Indian, Greek, Sumerian, and Roman "gods" (the deus, devas) of the various pantheons, visitors from above acting like spoiled children with lots of power and beauty.

We ignore the danger of suffering, the misfortune others meet, until the S gets real (bad touch)
.
It is completely wrong to interpret Buddhism as saying there is no pleasure. If there were no pleasure, the Buddha explains, no one would stay in samsara. Of course, there's pleasure. It is our relationship to pleasure that is problematic. We crave, grasp at, and cling to the pleasant; we exhibit aversion and fear toward the unpleasant; we get bored or confused and fall asleep with the neutral, the neither-pleasant-nor-unpleasant.

F all y'all! Maybe pleasure's the solution
Moreover, there is a hidden danger in pleasure and attachment, like a flower or fruit with a hidden thorn. Or to use a now less familiar simile, which was popular and easier to relate to in the Buddha's ancient agrarian proto-India, it is like licking honey off the blade of a knife or razor used to gather that honey. It's sweet until it slices your tongue.

Females can get lonely? But they're always going to the bathroom together, going out in packs, being friends on the phone and on social media with their filters and clique parties, accompanying each other to venues, talking to everyone, and acting like the whole world is a popularity contest in high school!

Of course girls get lonely, and women have it even worse. Everything that happens on the HS social scene is temporary, even in college, but IRL? Whoa, suddenly it's all forevermore.

Females are pitted against each other by the society, treated in curious and crappy ways by males, misunderstood by a male-dominated medical field, psychologized, medicated (with most of them being put on antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs), and told to smile to make viewers feel better as if it were their job to make us feel good. Dating/mating in particular is a problem. Anyhow, who knows? Let's ask a woman. Dukkha Girl! Oh, she's not here. Um, Shoe0nHead, take it away:

The Rise of ‘Female Loneliness’ (How to Fix It)
Am I the problem because I feel like the victim in all of this, wahhhhh. Everyone hates me!

The return of "Dukkha Girl" (video)

Ellie Askew's Complaint to the Universe, Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Perplexity (2010) used to be "Dukkha Girl," but until she comes back, we have a new one.
You know what really "grinds my gears," to borrow Peter Griffin phrase? Being hungry all the time! Every time I meditate, I have to be thinking of food and how fat and famished and exhausted it's making me. I eat, but I still crave. I eat and eat more, mad gluttony. I still crave. I'm not fat yet, but I worry. And when I worry...you guessed it. I want to fast, I want to starve, I want to become a breatharian or, at least, juice everything to stop craving tempting tastes and textures. But if I did, I might get hungry. Then I'd obsess and eat. Who/what might I forgive? Myself?

May I be well, may I be happy, may I be free, may I look after myself with joy and ease. May ALL living beings (who eat) be well, happy, free, and look after themselves with joy and ease.

What is "Happiness"? (Dukkha Girl, Pt. 1)

Ellie Askew, Aloka (Thabarwa Center), Dhr Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Perplexity used to be but now it's Ellie Askew, Wisdom Quarterly's very own Dukkha Girl

Someone asked me about my vision of happiness. Here is what I explained from the perspective of a Buddhist nun:

Real happiness exists in minds free of liking, disliking, and delusion. This special kind of mind appears when one is able to do what is good and beneficial and when one’s life is useful to others.

This is not the happiness we normally pursue. Usually we seek our happiness from sense pleasure coming through our senses -- eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body. When sense organs come into contact with pleasant sights, sounds, fragrances, flavors, or touch sensations, this contact brings pleasant feelings to mind.

We are left with the impression that life is for getting pleasant feelings and the pleasure derived from them. It is a "reasonable" conclusion given that the nature of pleasure is that it feels "good."

We are left to conclude that if our senses are pleasing us, we are being successful. The more continuous our experience of pleasant sensations, the more we think we have been successful in our endeavor at "acquiring" happiness.

I can "meditate" it all away.
Actually our mind wants something more. We don’t know exactly what or where to find it, so we travel to see beautiful sights, eat to find pleasing flavors, and so on. This is all for sense pleasure, which only lasts as long as the contact does, so we have to search for and seize it again and again.

We end up spending our lives in this exhausting pursuit, usually fighting others for limited resources. We have to find a way to earn an income to buy activities and pleasures. We must often endure much hardship for this, and we are led to think it’s what we should do.

Even the happiness we get using time with our family and friends is pleasure by way of the senses. These things seem to be what life is for, because they feel good and bring us some satisfaction if only for a short while.

Things are not bad. But are they not distracting us from pursuing the highest happiness that has nothing to do with sense pleasures?

Wonderful as sense pleasures are for a time, if we make them our sole aim, our minds/hearts will remain dependent on things and people for happiness.

To find real and lasting happiness, we have to aim at it. Not needing to be happy is a form of real happiness, a form of contentment.

If instead we just do what is really good and really beneficial, good and beneficial results will come.

In this way, without pursuing (out of craving, grasping, and clinging) happiness on purpose, it arises naturally. We do not need to hanker or seek after anything. We need only to do actions (karma, merit) that are good and beneficial.

When this happiness comes, it comes by itself
Our actions of thought, word, and deed are causing the results of our lives -- life after life -- actions that start in the mind with intention, our will or motivation. By doing beneficial actions and avoiding harmful ones, the mind becomes very powerful. This is a natural result. It happens without our willing it to happen, as a consequence of causes and conditions, intentions and actions.

Dukkha Girl's Monkey Mind Meditation

Dukkha Girl: One Woman's Search for Everything... (dukkhagirl.thisiszen.com)
Thoughts take me to the fantasy world of unicorns and fairies instead of down the hole.

Wacky thought processes…
So you’re trying to practice Zen, not just on the cushion, but in everyday life? And this is Zen practice, being here and now, right?

You’ve probably heard that Zen is not about self-improvement, growing into a “better person,” or becoming less anxious -- blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada…

This is why you started Zen practice in the first place!

You hope that maybe you’ll get to the point where you’re totally in the moment and practice just to practice. But -- damn it! -- you have to admit that you became interested in Zen because you saw yourself as a totally messed up person. You had hope that Zen would make you ________________ (fill in the blank: peaceful, tranquil, calm, compassionate, happier, cooler, hipper, poetic, integrated, actualized…enlightened).

And maybe you are noticing some “side benefits” of your practice. The people at work note that you seem calmer taking change in stride. You yell at your family less. You are able to “just do it” throughout the day without the resistance you used to have. You still have preferences, but you’re able to do less “picking and choosing” and just do what needs doing.

You are on the way, right? Next stop enlightenment city? More

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
Portia Nelson poem about addiction recovery2

Chapter One
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend that I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in this same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep whole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in… it’s a habit… but,
My eyes are open
I know where I am
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter Four
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter Five
I walk down another street.

Why is there suffering? (dukkha)

Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, Crystal Quintero, Wisdom Quarterly
Lana is a genius who suffers with no way out but craving and delusion (genius.com)

Dukkha Girl on meditation: Where I think my mind should be and where it is.
There are many theories as to why there is suffering. One popular Christian notion is called the Vale of Soul Making Theodicy.

The God wants earthlings to suffer -- so It makes life bad but does so for the purpose of making us gritty, grateful, and good. It's testing our mettle.

It's strengthening our steel. It's hard to think of a God like that, so most Christians personalize Him. And we talk back and say, "Hey, Almighty, what the flying luck are you thinking? What are you doing to me down here?"
I'll smite all these sinners! - Oh, dad!
  • In 1998, Jewish theologian Zachary Braiterman coined the term anti-theodicy in his book (God) After Auschwitz to describe Jews, both in a biblical and post-Holocaust context, whose response to the problem of evil is protest and refusal to investigate the relationship between God and suffering. An anti-theodicy acts in opposition to a theodicy and places full blame for all experience of evil onto God, but must rise from an individual's belief in and love of God. Anti-theodicy has been likened to Job's protests in the Book of Job. More
An elegant theory emerges from the science of evolutionary biology: The purpose of life is to perpetuate itself. So all it cares about is getting the gene pool into the future. So it is concerns with fitness -- BUT only until offspring are produced. What happens to beings after that, who cares?

Darwin was misrepresented to be all about "survival of the fittest," which does not mean surviving for life but only surviving into the genetic future. We might be killed by a saber toothed tiger, and that would be fine with evolution and the genes so long as we had already produced offspring.

Christianity, Biology, or Buddhism?
Born to Die in a Dark Paradise, Ultraviolence victim Lana Del Rey

Therefore, and this is the brilliant thing, it (the impersonal process of evolution and fitness) needs to keep us fit only until then. What comes BEFORE childbirth, our producing of offspring? Life, health, beauty, vitality, and virile happiness.

What comes AFTER childbirth, after we've served our purpose so far as evolution is concerned? Old age, sickness, suffering, and death, impotent sadness.

We've served our purpose, expended ourselves: Thank you, come again. The bad news is we do come again, and again, and again.

Oh no, not suffering again! (Ajahn-Chah)
While a human life is extraordinarily world, life itself is extremely common. Only fully enlightened beings make an end of all suffering and rebirth. Most beings, fearing that rebirth (and suffering, happiness, and everything else beings identify with in our delusion) would ever end, CLING to continued becoming, to renewal of being, to rebirth. So the suffering continues.

What is the source of suffering (dukkha)? In Buddhist perspective it has multiple causes, but fundamentally its cause is ignorance, delusion, wrong view, nescience, not knowing, not understanding. The roots of all bad karma, all unskillful action that will eventually produce an unwelcome result, are greed (craving), aversion (hate, fear), and delusion (ignorance).
It sticks on the skin and goes into the flesh; from the flesh, it gets into the bones. It's like an insect on a tree that eats through the bark, into the wood, and then into the core -- until finally the tree dies. We've grown up like that. It gets buried deep inside. Our parents taught us grasping and attachment, giving meaning to things, believing firmly that we exist as a self-entity and that things belong to us. From our birth, that's what we are taught. We hear this over and over again, and it penetrates our hearts and stays there as a habitual feeling. We're taught to get things, to accumulate, and hold on to them... More

The Secondary Cause of Suffering
Girl with green greedy eyes cries (rawstory.com, Rape at BJU/thinkstock/shutterstock)

The CAUSE of suffering? But I thought Buddhists blamed "desire"?

[No, the reason the Buddha focused on "desire" or "craving" (literally, intense thirst) is because that is the one thing in the 12 causal links of dependently-originated suffering that we can easily do something about. Enlightenment will undo ignorance, but we can't get their directly.]

After the Buddha learned that suffering is a part of life, he realized he could not find a way to end suffering without finding out what causes it.

Buddhists study that the Buddha learned this just like a doctor learns about what's wrong with patients by listing their symptoms, finding out what makes them worse, and studying other cases before prescribing a cure.

By watching people the Buddha found out that the causes of suffering are craving or desire, and ignorance [in addition to their other consequence, aversion]. The power of these things to cause ALL suffering is what Buddhists call the Second Noble Truth.  Craving?  What are things we crave for? More
