How Buddhism influenced 'Star Wars'

May the Force (of the Fourth) be with you. And also with you. The Dharma of Star Wars is a well-known thing, how Buddhism influenced the creation of the movie in general. Dr. Hartmann fills in more detail, getting at the importance of karma (doing) over trying. There's no trying. Do or not do. The Dalai Lama would agree with Yoda on that much, or at least on the way he says it.

How Buddhism influenced Star Wars (with Professor Kate Hartmann)
The Dharma of Star Wars
(Krypton To Alderaan) Krypton to Alderaan Podcast Episodes. Dr. Kate Hartmann is a professor of Asian Religions at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, who specializes in Buddhism.

This special edition of the show is a discussion, asking What influenced George Lucas when creating Star Wars, including Buddhism, famous mythologist Joseph Campbell, Taoism, and Shinto (the indigenous kami-monster religion of Japan).
  • and how these influences have transcended Lucas, becoming an inherent part of the film franchise, TV shows, books, and other Star Wars content.
  • Also discussed are how certain characters personify those influences and
  • how one line of dialogue that never made any sense to Host Joey has a lot of meaning and actually makes a lot of sense if we factor in all of these influences.
  • Plus, there's a surprise question for Dr. Hartmann.

LA Fest of Books 2025: What happened?

WHAT HAPPENED?

Wilmer Valderrama interview: American Story
I was the sexy one on That '70s Show
(KCW Attractions) April 28, 2025: LA Times Festival of Books at USC (April 27, 2025) featured TV star Wilmer Valderrama. Who? He's a Hollywood man-about-town (who dated many incredible women to prove his prowess as a super sexy Latin heartthrob, who is now on about writing with an insightful discussion concerning his book, An American Story. Hear his inspiring journey and thoughts on his work. #AnAmericanStory

I'm the country's hottest poet.
We often hear said that "Los Angeles has no culture." That may be. But we do have the country's largest book festival.

Who knows who's doing all that reading, but we buy a lot of books and launch more careers than Nashville, Frisco, and even the Empire State, the Big Apple, where allegedly if one can make it there, one can make it anywhere.

How to boil down this mega literary festival full of authors, promoters, publishers, and poets?

The Poets Laureate of CA and LA

Autopsy (Avan Jogia)
To boil down the whole two-day event on the USC campus near the heart of the city (DTLA), there was this former teenage heartthrob named Avan Jogia. His post-teen fans mobbed the Poetry Stage tent to marvel at his ability to write, express emotion, and cuss. It was hot. (It wasn't but if one loves a TV star and sees him in real life, dressed in suit, tie, and checkered Vans, hey, that's something. What is it? An opportunity to sell lots of copies of a personally autographed hardcover poetry book about the darker side, very Emo and slightly Goth, called Autopsy (of an Ex-Teen Heartthrob).

USC encourages responsible graffiti: It's lit
The annual Los Angeles Festival of Books on the USC campus (now in a kind of lockdown status requiring picture ID to enter) is here, hosted by the Los Angeles Times.

It is two full days of authors, book sales, literary performances, networking, seeing and being seen, getting published, and maybe even wrangling a book deal with a major publishing house.

Merriam-Webster: US's Most Trusted Dictionary
Don't count on it. There's nearly no money on anything but novels that get picked up and converted into something else by the Hollywood Machine, the dream of any serious writer eager to cash in rather than promote the art of communication and literature.

Books, books, read books on Venus and Mars!
There is also a religious section and a massive Buddhist organization giving out FREE sacred Buddhist texts and titles from both the back-to-basics historical Buddha-oriented Theravada tradition and the much larger Amitabha (a Cosmic Buddha) and Guanyin (Goddess of Compassion) emphasizing Mahayana school and its apocryphal writings. A lovely Muslim organization will have literature as in years past. Bring a book bag, enjoy food and live entertainment, and lots of schmoozing and walking around like a college coed. Study psychedelics, ecstasy, drugs

Entheogenic medicinal substances must only be administered with "set and setting" in mind.

.
Who knows what patients might see when dosed
Ever think about studying psychedelics? Well, now it's possible because the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is offering the first accredited bachelor's degree of its kind in the United States.

Professor of Psychology Nick Walker at CIIS explained the new program on KCBS Radio the Bay Area, saying a lot of people are interested in psychedelics as an area of study.

Like Montauk, it started as science until a literal monster came through experimenting.

Miracle component of magic mushrooms
He described the current situation as a psychotherapy renaissance when people are eager to test the use of drugs that act as hallucinogenic entheogenic potential-medicines.

"There's a lot of very exciting psychedelic research in terms of its potential as a [depression and] PTSD treatment, for instance. There's a lot of work happening with psychedelics, and we think it's very important that people approach it in a scientific fashion, in a well-informed fashion, in an ethically informed fashion.

Psychedelic literally means "mind-making"

Science has it all, Bart. - Yeah, right, Skinner.
"Because you know when something like this, when there's a big boom in something like psychedelics, some exciting method of treatment and exploration and personal growth, it can be kind of a Wild West scenario, with people experimenting wildly."

Psychedelics have gotten a lot of attention in popular culture recently, with claims they can assist people in the throes of a deep depression, help veterans and trauma survivors.

Okay, now I've gone too far. Stop the ride, please
A 2023 study by the National Institute of Health said PTSD currently affects an estimated 12 million U.S. adults and "initial clinical trials have demonstrated the potential value of psychedelic-assisted therapy to treat PTSD and other psychiatric disorders."

Speech: Kamala concedes defeat (live)

I don't have to do anything, just read the script and the Deep State CIA will install me.
VP Kamala Harris addresses supporters at Howard University following election loss

I'm MAGA and fake boobs
(ABC 7 News - WJLA) Started streaming at 1:00 pm (PST): Failed candidate Vice President Kamala Devi Harris addresses her remaining supporters at historically Black university Howard U in Washington, D.C. (outside of the USA), Wednesday afternoon, following her election landslide defeat by convicted felon, sex abuser, and fraud Donald John Trump. ABC 7 News - WJLAax is live on the scene as a medic is called for behind the DJ booth and she keeps everyone waiting for more than 20 minutes, just as she did the night before after her apparent loss, sending out a spokesman to say she wasn't coming at all to address heartbroken supporters trying to hold on to the last bit of hope or dignity. But as the prosecutor and former district attorney has great difficulty showing any empathy, she didn't care. She has already called Trump to concede and accept her loss.

Muslim gal strips to protest Morality Police

Iran's Morality Police beats and arrests woman who stripped to protest "abusive" Hijab Police | Vantage with Palki Sharma
There's Buddhism in Russia.
(Firstpost) Nov. 4, 2024: Iran, in the fight of its life with genocidal Israel (backed by its US arms supplier) has no idea what PR means.

It has arrested a woman who stripped in protest at "abusive" hijab (burqa covering) policing after volunteer paramilitary Basij members physically harassed her for not wearing hijab properly.

They ripped the student's hijab and tore her clothes [as happened once to a girl in a blue bra in Sodom's Iraq when US war criminals under Bush, Dick, and Colon were warmongering for US corporations and weapons dealers with help from Condi and Rumsfeld].

Pres. Putin deploys his Reptilian "evil eye"
  • Wisdom Quarterly widely followed the feminist nude protests of Femen and Pussy Riot's provocations against Russian oppression, which seem in retrospect to have been funded by the CIA/Western intelligence agencies to provoke Pres. Vlad Putin and Russia into war with NATO. Similar nude protests at the beach and on bike rides in the United States attract attention and coverage to important double standards. Large women's marches with pink knitted caps followed.

Topless and nude Femen2 protesters (NPR)
After the confrontation, the female student walked around the campus without her clothes on, in protest. Then she was manhandled and arrested, allegedly beaten up by the morality police squad.

Would a soldier strike a naked lady?
While the woman's condition and whereabouts are currently unknown, she is being applauded on social media for her “bravery” to stand up against gendered violence and state oppression.

Meanwhile, it seems not much has changed for Iran, which was rocked by nationwide protests against the dress code after Mahsa Amini’s death in the custody of the morality police in 2022.
