Hello Kitty Convention and Science

CC Liu, Ashley Wells, Crystal Quintero, Wisdom Quarterly; Sanrio.com/HKFestival

"Catwoman" Julie Newmar
The Hello Kitty Supercute Friendship Festival is in Los Angeles this weekend -- and soon it's coming to a town near you thanks to the marketing geniuses at Sanrio Corporation.

Is it a collective case of toxoplasmosis? It might be as science is trying to demonstrate:

Crazy Cat Ladies?
I luv my hello kitty! - Meow (animalszooguru)
Do cats and cat owners share a large percentage of their microbial biome? A study is underway just as an earlier study of dog and dog owners demonstrated. We're surrounded by a sea of microbes because it's on our money. Don't wash your hands; they're mostly harmless.

Higgs Boson, Selling Out, Sex (video)

() scientist Don Lincoln describes the nature of the Higgs boson. Several large experimental groups are hot on the trail of this elusive subatomic particle ,which is thought to explain the origins of particle mass.

Katy Perry "sold her soul" (traded in her ideals for material success) after a strict Christian upbringing. Her words are dubbed out of context.

() New life is breathed into one of the oldest criminal enterprises -- the trafficking of humans into sexual slavery. Thousands of Eastern European women have been sold into prostitution. Photojournalist Mimi Chakarova investigates this rarely documented journey at priceofsex.org.

"Friends with Benefits"? (video)

Amber Dorrian, CC Liu (Wisdom Quarterly)

Make love, not war. If there is "war in the" air around 9/11 commemorations and prison planet survivalism, where is the love?

"Love" can mean so many things. Sex is one of them, usually the euphemistic meaning. But there is a better Greek word, agape. Oddly, English is not lacking. English-speakers are. Buddhism speaks of metta, "loving-kindness," as one of the most important qualities to develop.

If there is light in the soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.
-Chinese proverb

Lust, sensual craving, thirst, greed are all less than profitable expressions of this impulse in the Sense Sphere (kama-loka). Mara Devaputra is either Cupid or Lucifer in this sense, an evil or a messenger of light... maybe both.

Can Buddhists talk about sex -- one of the worst things one can do in this society which is all about war, defense, security, and resistance? Yes, Buddhists can do anything. With greedy intentions, we make our way and our world. With loving intentions, it is immediately a different world.
The world we see outside changes instantly from changes inside. Whether the world is ever a way or ever changes, who can know? It is about what we notice, what we bring forward as evidence (or what is shoved in our face by mainstream media), what we talk about/focus on.

Love and kisses for everyone, enemies, soldiers, elderly, corporate capitalists, tea baggers, meditators... We can curse the darkness or light a candle. And what we choose is important.

Our beliefs become our thoughts.
Our thoughts become our words.
Our words become our actions.
Our actions become our habits.
Our habits become our values.
Our values become our destiny.
- Gandhi

Super Spiritual Girl stripping it off! (video)

Tamara Levitt, Begin Within, strips and inspires us to strip! She empowers us to strip to get at what we really want, which is to get off -- the need, the wanting, the constant desire for more that feeds the thought: "If I get it then I'll be happy." We don't call her Super Spiritual Girl for nothing. Wink. This is what is. This is where I am. This is what I look like. If you don't like something, change it. Otherwise, accept, appreciate, because you know what? This is what is. And perhaps if we stop trying to change what is, in the space that arises out of acceptance, we just might find that "what is" is perfect. Tolle told us the same thing. Katie said it, too. And it's what Siddhartha thought before the light dawned.

Thought is a prison that does not accept what is.

Sex versus Meditation?

Sex vs. meditation, is it even a tie? Date the editors of Wisdom Quarterly (see below).

Sex feels great, we agree. "I try to have it seven times a week. I don't succeed, but it's worth a try." "Personally, I like to give it a rest on Sunday." "I'm not dating right now, so I have it all the time."

That's the kind of conversation overheard in the editing meeting at Wisdom Quarterly, especially since Margo arrived and Ashley became single. But we all agree, gavones notwithstanding, MEDITATION IS BETTER!

Before you scoff, before you laugh, it's true. Not all meditation. Wrong-meditation can be a drudge, a pain in the cushion, an hour of waterboarding. But when it starts going "right," when the bliss (piti) starts arising, nothing can compare.

It's like the difference between love and sex. If everyone were asked to vote -- and the teenage males' votes were deleted as outliers -- statistics would prove that people enjoyed meditation more. It lasts longer, it feels better (sensually), one feels better afterward, and one is better off for having done it (spiritually).

It's no contest. It's not a tie. Sex is tied with pizza, tied with getting rich, tied with laughter. But meditation is tied with freedom, accomplishment, and blissful fulfillment.

Who needs pornography when ordinary magazines affected by it reach the same effect nowadays? It's like when you want to get warm. Sex is like a work out. Meditation is like laying in the sun.

How many iPhone app users even know how to meditate? One is born knowing how to crunk out the Watusi. But meditation takes some doing. To live in the moment, to be here now, to actually get to what Eckhart Tolle is endlessly talking about -- nothing beats it.

Then if one attains something, that knocks it right out of the ballpark. Sex is a weak reflection of full body rapture, suffusing every pore like sudsy soap powder. Because it isn't easy to get it just right, people developed Tantra and other peripheral meditative practices. Great. But those, too, are only an approximation of happiness unknown by most human beings.

NEXT MONTH
We hope to have a fundraiser -- "Date Wisdom Quarterly." Winners with the best pictures and highest donations to our noble cause of bringing the Dharma to the world -- we've already unofficially exceeded a million hits, but we're stuck going by the green counter -- will date the editor of his or her choice. Who knows, the date could end with some meditation. We still have to put the idea through committee (advisors and Sangha). But it's either that or a PayPal donation button, and I don't think anyone is excited about that.

Chinese Democracy: Axl, Dalai Lama

Guns n' Roses is not the only group promoting Chi-nese Democracy. The Tibet Campaign is radically agitating Beijing for change and being crushed by the totalitarian state. Protests have continued before and after the 2008 Olympics.

Similarly, nine new Guns n' Roses Chinese Democracy tracks were recently leaked on the blog AntiQuiet, which was subsequently shut down and its operator arrested by the FBI to face charges for airing the songs.

Like Axl Rose, the Dalai Lama has been walking a tightrope between diplomacy and radical activity (between private serenity and behind-the-scenes work) to bring about the desired goal. The latter has succumbed to exhaustion, while the former has remained in near seclusion. Is Axl Rose a monk? Is the Dalai Lama a rockstar? If the shoe fits...

And on the topic of aging stars:
