Brentwood, Los Angeles is a ritzy Westside neighborhood, where the LAPD uses kid gloves on violent criminals, perps, and suspects because here, unlike the rest of the megalopolis, everyone is innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. What can be said about the worst greatest city in the world? It's not like Angelenos walk around not knowing what the megalopolis is really like. We just act that way because we know there is no "Los Angeles" as such. It's just an idea with no center and unclear borders. Long Beach is not part of the OC. It's still in LA, but probably most people do not realize that. The tip of the peninsula that is San Pedro was once an important Indian village. But next to no one even realizes you can drive there because it's beyond the Port of Los Angeles. And the port should be the southernmost point in most cases.
Los Angeles the county is larger in population than 40 of the 50 or so states that make up the USA. (What is the USA, Russia's neighbor facing west, just east of Siberia? Are Puerto Rico, Guam, and more than 1,000 islands in the Pacific part of the pack or not? Indigenous Hawaii is not four or five islands but more than 1,000 atolls and spits and areas that are off-limits to everyone but the military). So what is LAor LA City? It used to be Tovaangar to the Native peoples. Now it's 88 cities and unincorporated areas, neighborhoods, zip codes and area codes, invisible boundaries and real estate redlinings. It's a mess, an expensive mess because everyone keeps coming in search of the dream. Which dream? Take your choice -- cultural diversity, porn manufacturing, magazine pieces, and various industries. Love it, hate it, everyone will visit, so we wrongly say it is the "capital of the world." This video dives into newly unveiled images and the untold stories behind the historic event 55 years ago.
On August 15th, 1969, over 400,000 people gathered at a farm in Bethel, New York, for the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, a festival that symbolized the spirit of the 1960s.
Photographer Baron Wolman was there to document the event, capturing unseen moments of this cultural phenomenon.
It was summer and I wanted demo for peace.
In June 2014, nearly half a century later, some of his hidden photographs were finally revealed in a London photographic exhibition.

Today is "Punk for a Day" Day, and coincidentally Danny "Oingo Boingo" Elfman appeared on the "Horselaugh and Fred Show" on KLOS (95.5 FM, Los Angeles) to judge some new music for "Stay or Go" on New Music Friday. Elfman is doing of Day of the Dead concert November 2, 2024, at the Hollywood Bowl.
This will serve as his Halloween spectacular which he tries to pull off every year. He leads an orchestra to score films, but he does so much more, including working on a new album. He skyrocketed to fame with Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo (a sound that may be onomatopoeia for a bouncing bedspring) and his appearance in the fifth dimension.
We fell in love on hearing Jed the Fish play a song called "I'm Afraid." It was scary good and catchy, "Peace of mind, peace of mind, hard to keep, hard to find." Oingo Boingo formed, and it was never heard again. There were just too many OB hits like "Only a Lad" filling the airwaves.
Elfman talked a little about the beginnings this morning on the HF Show, in which a sickly woman with an extra-long tongue cleans Fred's crack (Irish craik), his budding side project station, on a regular basis. And she does it some more, imitating Robin Quivers, weekday mornings.

The big news in LA today is "carmageddon," as the LA Dodgers show the New York Yankees what's what with secret weapon Japanese Shohei Ohtani (pronounced \show-me da-muh-nee\), who is bringing thousands of fans over from Japan, where millions monitor him and watch games.
The previous greatest Dodger ever (legendary pitcher Fernando Valenzuela) just passed away this week, so there's extra fervor in Chavez Ravine, site of Dodger Stadium and this evening's game.
But Imagine Dragons is playing, and there about three other big shows around town plus countless Halloween parties everyone's attending. One does not want to drive anywhere.
What better way to commemorate the day than LA's Wasted Youth, a hardcore band from back in the day. They attended Uni High, near UCLA, an iconic place, alma mater for many, including Elfman. (Wasted Youth's "Uni High Beefrag" is a pretty funny song if vulgar and possibly misogynistic with typical sophomoric enthusiasm).

Today, October 25th, is all about celebrating the punk movement and punk music. This is because the movement is amongst the largest in the world and has some distinguishing factors.
For instance, punks dress in a certain way and possess a non-conformist attitude. Due to this, they are often stereotyped and treated as outsiders.
However, this does not change how great the movement is as people continue to join it even today. Moreover, punk bands are heard across the world, and this form of music is created in different languages. (Think of Pussy Riot yelling in Russian). A red flag warning was issued today (Monday, 9/2/24) for far Western Nevada (home of Burning Man's Black Rock City), Northeastern California, and the Tahoe Basin by the National Weather Service (NWS).
The warning comes amid [a burgeoning traffic jam out of the desert with high temperatures, strong wind gusts, and low humidity -- conditions that could cause wildfires to start and spread rapidly.
At the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, wind gusts had already reached around 30 miles per hour as of 10:00 am, Meteorologist Matthew Chyba at the weather service told SF Gate.
He said as conditions are "ripe" for wildfires to spread, members of the public are urged to follow their local fire restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that can cause sparks.
This happens near dry vegetation, including yard work, target shooting, or even campfires.
The red flag warning coincides with the exodus from Burning Man festival, which sent thousands of revelers driving into the desert amid blowing playa dust.

Drivers leaving Burning Man have been encouraged to "triple-check" their load and trailer for loose items before they leave the desert for the pavement.

Average travel time to leave the event was around three hours as of Monday morning, according to several posts on X (Twitter). One recent ex/tweet read:
"Average travel time for Greeters to Black top is 5h 50m. All lanes are designated outbound early. The speed limit is 5mph."
According to NWS, the area will have lows around 53 degrees Monday night with wind gusts between 10 and 15 miles per hour, with the strongest hitting around 30 miles per hour. In the day Reno is expected to hit temperatures of around 90 degrees.

Nisei Week Japanese Festival just wrapped up in Los Angeles. Then the Nippon-mania began. Formosa (Taiwan) must be jealous. Player Shohei Ohtani came to the USA to teach Americans how baseball is played. The Dodgers bought him (price tag ~$700 million) to come make millions for Los Angeles. And, boy, is he ever paying off! He high fives his dog, Decoy, hits homers for the massive viewing audience across the sound in Tokyo, Waikiki, and up the way in San Francisco.
LA, like Japan, is in the ring of fire quake zone
Is there still a remnant population of railroad builders and Zen practitioners (Shinto worshippers) in that Central California concentration camp (Manzanar) from The "Good" War (WWII) when Japanese Americans were rounded up, interned, and deprived of earnings and property, dignity and freedom, due process and reparations. Forty thousand fans tried their best, stood in line for a workday, traffic jammed up DTLA to get to Chavez Ravine, and had a bumper party at this devotional tribute to the god/kami that is Ohtani.
Nisei Week (二世週祭, Nisei-shū Matsuri) is an annual festival celebrating Japanese American (JA) culture and history in Little Tokyo, near Chinatown Los Angeles (DTLA).
Nisei means "second generation" in Japanese, describing the first American-born Japanese, a group the seven-day festival was originally meant to attract.
Though named for the Nisei generation, Nisei Week is no longer targeted at Niseis, nor is the festival still contained within a week.
It's time to be cool and go Everyday Zen.
Nisei Week Foundation President (2006) Michelle Suzuki described the festival as "the opportunity for people of all backgrounds to celebrate Japanese heritage and culture" [1].
Festivities are held over one month, though the main attractions are held during the primary two weekends of the festival in the summer heat of mid-August.

Aug. 28, 2024: Long lines of excited fans waited outside Dodger Stadium on Wednesday for a chance to snag a special edition Shohei Ohtani Bobblehead.
The sought-after bobblehead features Ohtani smiling in his Dodgers uniform while holding his beloved dog named Decoy. Loyal fans of the baseball star lined up at the stadium hours before the gates opened, hoping to snag the coveted figurine before supplies ran out.
