Paṭikkūla-manasikāra [1] is a Buddhist Pāli language term that is generally translated as "reflections on repulsiveness."

It refers to a traditional Buddhist meditation. In it, 31 parts of the body are contemplated in a variety of ways. In addition to developing mindfulness (sati) and stillness (samādhi), this form of meditation is considered conducive to overcoming lust and craving.

Along with cemetery contemplations such as the contemplation of the nine stages of decay, this type of meditation is one of the two meditations on "the foul" or "unattractive" (asubha) [2].

Paṭikkūla literally means "against" (paṭi) "the slope" or "embankment" (kūla) and has been translated adjectivally as "averse, objectionable, contrary, disagreeable" and, in its nounal form, as "loathsomeness, impurity" [3].

Manasikāra, derived from manasi (locative of mana thus, loosely, "in mind" or "in thought") and karoti ("to make" or "to bring into") and has been translated as "attention" or "pondering" or "fixed thought" [4].

This type of meditation is traditionally mentioned as an "antidote" to sensual lust, passion, and obsession [8].

This is also one of the "four protective meditations" along with anussati ("recollection") of the Buddha, mettā (universal loving-kindness, benevolence, agape) practice, and the recollection or mindfulness of death [9].

Nisei Week (二世週祭, Nisei-shū Matsuri) is an annual festival celebrating Japanese American (JA) culture and history in Little Tokyo, near Chinatown Los Angeles (DTLA).

Nisei means "second generation" in Japanese, describing the first American-born Japanese, a group the seven-day festival was originally meant to attract.

Though named for the Nisei generation, Nisei Week is no longer targeted at Niseis, nor is the festival still contained within a week.

What is the Pa Auk training?

Planting Wisdom: Reflections on the "Lesser Exposition on Karma Discourse" or "Shorter Analysis of Deeds Sutras" (Cula-kamma-vibhanga Sutta, MN 135) is the name of today's talk by Western Buddhist monastic Bhante Subhuti (AmericanMonk.org).

Ven. Subhuti is a long-time American Theravada Buddhist monk and student of the famous enlightened Burmese Meditation Master Pa Auk Sayadaw. Here he gives a cursory review of a significant sutra with the astounding tale from the Commentary on the rebirth story of Todeyya and Subha, a rich stingy man reborn as a pet dog in his former house, who becomes a close companion of his son.

Todeyya: I was a millionaire, but I was stingy.

The Buddha informs Subha that the dog in a former rebirth was his father, which comes as a massive insult. To prove it, the Buddha asks if his stingy father didn't by any chance leave inheritance money ungiven. He did. He died suddenly without revealing where he kept his treasure, which caused hardship to the family. The Buddha advises him to feed Todeyya the dog a rich meal until he's drowsy and then ask him to go to the treasure. The dog, still stingy, goes to take a nap over the spot her buried the money. This convinces Subha that the Buddha knows what he's talking about and that karma and rebirth are real phenomena. So he becomes a student and practices the Dhamma (Sanskrit Dharma, the Buddha's Teachings on Awakening).

The system of Buddhist meditation taught at Pa-Auk Tawya (Pa Auk Forest Monastery) is based on the instructions by the historical Buddha as found in the Pāli language canon and its commentaries.

The system taught is called the Threefold Training:

1. strict observance of precepts (sīla),
2. developing stillness (samādhi), and
3. as a basis for attaining wisdom (paññā).

It is further subdivided into the Seven Stages of Purification, which provide a step-by-step formula for systematically purifying one’s karma (deeds) of body (physical actions), speech (verbal actions), and mind (mental actions) of defilements in order to realize nirvana in this very lifetime.

Use the breath or Four Elements

In brief, the main practice is to begin with samatha (stilling, tranquilizing, making the mind content and joyous) meditation, which is to develop the meditative absorption called jhānas.

A yogi (Buddhist meditator) is free to choose any of the 40 serenity-meditation subjects as taught by the Buddha. At Pa-Auk Tawya, most yogis develop the absorptions or jhānas using mindfulness-of-breathing (ānāpānassati).

Having developed stillness (samma-samadhi or samatha), a yogi may proceed to practice insight (vipassanā) meditation.

As an alternative, a yogi may omit the development of the absorptions, which a subtle and difficult for many who are not naturally inclined (from past life practice of the jhānas).

One will be taught instead to develop the less powerful "access concentration" with the serenity-meditation subject of Four Elements Meditation, prior to the practice of insight meditation.

In either case, the stillness/concentration attained by a yogi produces the "light of wisdom" or "sign" (nimitta) of progress in practice. More

• Like cures like is the homeopathic saying. Is it true for our actions and their results? Giving little begets getting little. Having chosen an action in response to a situation, I can expect that kind of result from the world for a long time. Just one act of stealing, because it occurred over so many mind-moments (which are laid down like seeds in consciousness), will result in exponentially more of that. A good choice -- giving, being friendly, being possessed of right view -- will result in reaping exponentially more happiness than we've sown. It may seem unfair, but it's "lawful," that is, working out in some rule-bound way, according to universal law, in accordance with the nature of the world. Or else all that we did would come to nothing, mean nothing, and be merely random events happening to us with no rhyme or reason, nothing to learn, nothing to improve, no aha moments when it all makes sense and everything is just as it is supposed to be (given what we chose and did previously). The hope is that we can NOW do something different and begin, eventually, to get pleasant, welcome, wished-for results.

It emanates out of Los Angeles, California and St. Louis, Missouri with over 800 affiliates. It's bound to be playing on a radio station near everyone in the country and online for everyone else. Los Angeles gets more than one broadcast with a good enough antenna, but it comes over the clear channel KFI 640 AM from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM and replays until 5:00 AM. It is a horrible experience due to the mind deadening repetition of very poorly made commercials spots in what seems to be an effort to get listeners to sign up for the paid ($55/year), commercial-free, subscription-based version.

And when this courteous and amiable talk was finished he, too, sat down to one side and curled up like a dog. When Punna the ox-duty ascetic sat down, he asked the Blessed One: 

"Venerable sir, this naked dog-duty ascetic Seniya does what is hard to do: He eats his food when it is thrown on the ground. That dog duty has long been taken up and practiced by him. What will be his [karmic result and] destination? What will be his future course [of rebirth in samsara, the wheel of life and death, the continued wandering on of beings]?"

"Enough, Punna, enough. Let it be. Do not ask that," the Blessed One replied.

But a second... and a third time Punna the ox-duty ascetic asked the Blessed One...

"Well, Punna, since I cannot dissuade you by sayng, 'Enough, Punna, enough. Let it be. Do not ask me that,' I shall therefore tell you.

"Here, Punna, someone develops the dog-duty fully and unstintingly, develops the dog-habit fully and unstintingly, develops the dog-mind fully and unstintingly, develops dog-behavior fully and unstintingly.

"Having done that, on the dissolution of the body, after death, that person reappears in the company of dogs. But if his view is such as this: 'By this virtue or duty or asceticism or spiritual life I shall become a (great) god [brahma] or some (lesser) god [deva],' that is wrong view in this person's case. Now there are two destinations for one with wrong view, I say, perdition or the animal womb.

"So, Punna, if [Seniya's] dog duty is perfected, it will lead him to the company of dogs; if it is not, it will lead him to perdition."

When this was said, the naked dog-duty ascetic Seniya wept and shed tears.

Then the Blessed One said to Punna: "Punna, I could not dissuade you by saying, 'Enough, Punna, enough. Let it be. Do not ask that.'"

[Then the dog-duty ascetic Seniya said:] "Venerable sir, I am not weeping because the Blessed One has spoken thus. Still, this dog duty has long been taken up and practiced by me. Venerable sir, there is this Punna, son of the Koliyans and an ox-duty ascetic: The ox duty has long been taken up and practiced by him. What will be his destination? What will be his future course?"

"Enough, Seniya, enough. Let it be. Do not ask that." But a second... and a third time Seniya the naked dog-duty ascetic asked the Blessed One.

"Well, Seniya, since I cannot dissuade you by saying, 'Enough, Seniya, enough. Let it be. Do not ask that,' I shall therefore tell you."... [The same result obtains.]

When this was said, Punna, son of the Koliyans and an ox-duty ascetic, wept and shed tears. Then the Blessed One said to the naked dog duty ascetic Seniya: "Seniya, I could not dissuade you by saying, 'Enough, Seniya, enough. Let it be. Do not ask that.'"

[Then Punna said:] "Venerable sir, I am not weeping because the Blessed One has spoken thus. Still, this ox duty has long been taken up and practiced by me. Venerable sir, I have confidence in the Blessed One thus: 'The Blessed One is capable of teaching me the Dharma in such a way that I may abandon this ox duty and that this naked dog-duty ascetic Seniya may abandon that dog duty.'"

"Then, Punna, listen and heed well what I shall say."

"Yes, venerable sir," he replied. The Blessed One said:

"Punna, there are four kinds of karma proclaimed by me after my realization with direct knowledge. What are the four?

• There is dark karma with dark ripening
• There is bright karma with bright ripening
• There is dark-and-bright karma with dark-and-bright ripening, and
• There is karma that is not dark and not bright with neither-dark-nor-bright ripening that conduces to the exhaustion of karma.

"What is dark karma with dark ripening? Here someone produces a (karmic) bodily process (bound up) with affliction [defiled action expressed through body, speech, or mind], one produces a (karmic) verbal process (bound up) with affliction, one produces a (karmic) mental process (bound up) with affliction.

"By so doing one reappears in a world with affliction. When that happens, afflicting contacts [unpleasant "touches" through eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind] touch one. Being touched by these, one feels afflicting feelings entirely painful as in the case of beings in perdition.

Werewolves: Lore, Legend, and Lycanthropy

Werewolves (literally "man-wolves") are shape-shifting creatures with unusual speed, strength, reflexes, and senses. They can be found in countless books, films, and TV shows, from the horror classic "The Wolf Man," to the "Twilight" and "Underworld" series.

Though werewolves often play second fiddle to vampires and zombies in terms of pop culture man-monsters, they have a long and rich history.

Traditionally, there were several ways a person could become a werewolf. In her book Giants, Monsters, and Dragons, folklorist Carol Rose notes that:

"In ancient Greece it was believed that a person could be transformed by eating the meat of a wolf that had been mixed with that of a human and that the condition was irreversible." Centuries later other methods were said to create werewolves, including "being cursed, or by being conceived under a new moon, or by having eaten certain herbs, or by sleeping under the full moon on Friday, or by drinking water that has been touched by a wolf."

It was also widely believed that werewolves could dress in a special, protective wolf skin, though they had to remove it at daybreak and hide it. If their magical pelt were found and taken from the werewolf-in-human-form, he or she could be killed.

A similar theme appears in the Scottish and Irish folklore of the selkies — creatures who spend their lives in the cold ocean as seals but can transform into human form by shedding their pelts. If they do so, they must hide their pelts. For if they are found they can't change back into seals and must live on land with the fishermen who possess their skins....

Though the full moon was originally only one of many possible causes of lycanthropy, it was the one that stuck in the public's mind. Today, many people still associate the moon with werewolves and madness.

Some who work in police and emergency medical services have anecdotally claimed that full moon nights are busier, crazier, and more dangerous than other nights. This perception may be rooted more in psychology and imagination than reality: carefully controlled studies have not found good evidence supporting this idea. Furthermore, there is no known mechanism by which the moon would somehow influence a person's mind to make him or her more dangerous — except of course for their own imaginations and expectations.

Today, werewolves are [thought] to be mythical creatures found in fiction instead of lurking in the dark woods, but that was not always the case. Not so long ago, belief in werewolves was common.

Overall, there was little difference between the killings and activities of wolves and werewolves: both would hunt at night, attacking sheep or livestock, and sometimes humans. The main difference was, of course, that the werewolf changed into human form at some point... More
