Why are you wandering in the woods, Ascetic?

There is a good life, that of a nomadic hippie -- free as the wind (no savings), enjoying free love, doing whatever one wishes whenever one wishes, feeling good, dropping chemical-assistance anytime (haunted by addiction). That may have been true in the 1960s and 1970s; it is less true now. There's a superficially similar but much better life, that of wandering ascetics like the Buddha, Mahavira, and others in the sramana movement. What is the difference? Underlying motive. Both may be spiritual seekers, but only one is likely to make any progress. Why? Vice and drugs make one possible, whereas the other relies on virtue and restraint.

  The word śramaṇa is pronounced /shra-ma-na/ like the English word shaman, a wandering aiming for spiritual development through simplicity, voluntary poverty (relinquishing everything), and often penances or austerities in the misguided attempt to subdue "sin" and evil and develop virtue and self-restraint. Of the many schools and teachers at the time of the Buddha that rebelled against the devotional functions of temple priests (brahmanas), only three seem to have survived to today, Buddhism, Jainism, and wandering yogi sadhus.

If one is going to eat "trash," and we do not recommend it, put drugs and drug paraphernalia away, put down the phone, tell pimp or madame you will call them later, and dive into a dumpster, preferably in a group with someone holding a flashlight. Panhandling is a better option, as is eating things growing naturally from trees as well as wild edible plants from the park or other public places. There are always also charitable organizations offering food. But all those sources having failed (and people will usually give food even if they refuse to give change), pick clean greens. Avoid all meat and dairy. Give everything the sniff test. Keep any food found in cool place, which should be easy in SF because it's usually cold at night. Boil over burning dumpster fire or one of those hobo oil barrels. Do not boil a shoe or old boot as that provides no nutrition and is likely to have toxic industrial products, plastics, dyes, and dioxin. Ask a John or Jane to cook or to offer food. Stand by the exit of a restaurant and ask for leavings before customers trash them. Seek public social services. Get a side job at a restaurant that doesn't mind employees eating extras. Finally, pretend you're in lockup, jail, or prison and consider all the jailhouse delicacies crafty and creative inmates dream up. By the addition of crumbled potato chips (which are full of deadly acrylamides in the best of circumstances) seems to make anything palatable. Avoid sugar (particularly high fructose corn syrup) and glutens (wheat, barley, rye, oats, and buckwheat, all of which have very harmful plant lichens that destroy the gut lining and lead to deficiencies, according to Dr. Joel Wallach). 

A better way to be a nomad: wandering asceticism

The śramaṇas [a] are people who labor, toil, or exert themselves for some higher or religious [spiritual] purpose [1, 2], a "seeker, or ascetic, one who performs acts of austerity [tapas]" [3, 4, 5, 6].

The śramaṇa tradition includes primarily Jainism [7], Buddhism [8], and others such as the Ājīvika [9, 10].

The śramaṇa religions became popular in the circles of alms-gathering mendicants from greater Magadha (the adopted home of the Buddha) that led to the development of spiritual practices [11], as well as the popular concepts in all major Indian religions such as saṃsāra (the endless cycle of rebirth and suffering) and moksha (liberation from that cycle) [12, Note 1].

White Lives Matter (More) rally

"Y'all will not erase us" (I. Rony).

Many of us have said and will say, "ALL lives matter." This is foolish because it utterly fails to understand what is being claimed by BLM. What is it? "ALL lives will matter when Black lives matter." As of now, do they matter to police, DC, and in redlining real estate office in suburban neighborhoods around the country? Not so much. It is only to promote equality, fraternity, and freedom that we agitate for a world of fairness and equal opportunity, but we can't have that because when the race began, there was one group that was given a massive advantage. And many in that group are clueless as to their privilege, their fragility, their unearned advantage over other groups. Perceived membership ("passing") in this group confers advantages whether one seeks them or not. This should be obvious but apparently is not. So the revolution continues, the street agitation, the signs: Black Lives Matter. They really do. Get with it. To say "White Lives Matter" as if anyone ever doubted that is more than just Clueless, it is almost actively dismissing the concerns of the majority of the country. As long as there are those racist holdouts who want "racial purity" in a world of diversity, who demand white supremacy (like the Jim Crow South instituted), who call for the restoration of anti-miscegenation (look it up) laws, there will not be peace. And this rally in liberal, deeply blue, and progressive California just goes to show. "Hey, but, we had a Black presi-dude, so there's no more racism, so, like, shuddup about it, because you're being racist by mentioning the word 'race'" (or some variation of this sentiment) is still the mantra heard throughout the land. This is probably why the word "woke" spread to so many college campuses. "White supremacists, go home!" Maybe that should be the mantra. Where's "home" now? Newschwabenland, of coure.

(LAFOX 11 Los Angeles) May 25, 2025: A massive "mob" of people [young partygoers utilizing the rooftop of an empty warehouse] in downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) spray-painted and damaged dozens of buildings and even stopped two Metro trains, according to riot police who assembled to beat and disperse them with impunity].

What happened?

(ABC7 News) The LAPD said they received a call about a "large group disturbance" at Trinity Street and E Washington Boulevard. That's where more than 1,000 people had gathered for an unpermitted party [on the rooftop of] an abandoned warehouse. As officers arrived, things [coincidentally] escalated [which had nothing to do with their aggressive provocations to intimidate and establish dominance like prison alphas armed-and-extra-dangerous with paramilitary equipment, firing rubber bullets, which are not rubber but deadly cannons that can maim and kill]. The out-of-control vandals tagged businesses [with aerosol spray cans], a police vehicle, and the interior and exterior of two Metro A-line trains with graffiti. No passengers or operators were hurt, but service was delayed for 20 minutes. [The initial strike force called for backup and reinforcement.] Police [arrived] in riot gear [and] eventually moved in, firing rubber bullets after issuing multiple [muffled] warnings [threats] to disperse [or else]. According to the mayor's office, the crowd even assaulted some officers [tossing empty plastic water bottles in their direction and flipping them off with offensive hand gestures and running away instead of making easy targets], with one requiring medical attention after [allegedly] being struck in the face with a bottle [or something, perhaps the officer's own baton, helmet cover, weapon, cuffs, or shield]. More

  That's enough vandalism, M'kay, Kids?

  [No one is defending senseless vandalism, but it makes sense to strike back if The Man, cops known as the abusive LAPD, which represents all Los Angelenos, particularly the business-owners who support cops, to bear the brunt of police abuses. Bringing out a paramilitary riot squad (with spies, police informants, and plenty of agent provocateurs in the crowd to provide the pretext for institutional violence against citizens) and releasing them on unarmed and peaceful partygoers, it's NO WONDER those partygoers would tag up the town, spray graffiti, break windows, and otherwise what others misjudge as "their own city." It's not their city. It belongs to businesses and the Goon Squad paid with taxes to protect business-as-usual. "F the police," people will say for exactly this reason. What reason? "We make revolution inevitable when we make political participation impossible."

'May Day' marches and protests underway around the world

There are two "May Days" today

International Workers' Day observed on May 1st and is also called "May Day" but the two have different histories: May Day is a European festival of ancient origins marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on May 1, around halfway between the Northern Hemisphere's spring equinox and midsummer solstice [1, 2]

Festivities are also held the night before, known as May Eve. Traditions include:

• gathering green branches and wildflowers ("bringing in the May") [3], which are used to decorate buildings and made into wreaths;
• crowning a May Queen, sometimes with a male companion (to Jack in the Green) decked in greenery;
• setting up a Maypole, May Tree, or May Bush, around which people dance and sing;
• as well as parades and processions involving these [4].
• Bonfires are also a major part of the festival in some regions.

Regional varieties and related traditions include Walpurgis Night in central and northern Europe [1], the Gaelic festival Beltane [5], the Welsh festival Calan Mai [5], and May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary (of Catholic, Christian, Jewish but mostly imperial Roman fame). Two KFI 640 AM (an iHeart station, the largest talk radio station in the country) personalities rappelled down the 25 story Hilton Universal City (Los Angeles next to Hollywood) to bring attention to the unhoused situation in L.A. The succeeded in raising funds and not dying. The Just Feed 1 event continues Saturday, 9/8/24.

Beautiful Los Angeles -- with its Hollywood Land, Santa Monica, UCLA, USC, Caltech, beaches, mountains, woods, canyons, and rivers -- is the jewel of Southern California. It's big enough, with over ten million people in the county with about 4.8 million in the City of LA. One would never imagine how much homelessness and poverty exist here. It's a Tale of Two Cities.
