How much haul of merchandise piles up.

It all started on Brown Friday, calling the plumber the day after Thanksgiving because, well, Americans consume a lot.

That was the first bill. Then began Black Friday wargames at the mall. Who knows what moves me. It's not emotions.

Today is Cyber Monday, so it's time to order what I really wanted but didn't find elbowing people in person. I can track it down and order online. Delivery guys in shorts need the work. It's alright.

Do marketers use our emotions to sell us on things, claiming we sell ourselves with their help?

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, when I allay my guilt at overspending and running up credit card charges (personal debt) I can't afford by spending more on giving money away. I call it philanthropy, charity...snacking. Dieting makes me crazy. I gave at the office, my home office, when I was trying to order shoes.

How our gold is chipped away

In the most important sutra for lay Buddhists, the Sigalovada Sutta (DN 31) or compiled "Advice for Householders Discourse," he does just that. He is giving advice to young Sigala on the best way to live.

The Buddha advises how to use money to become safe and rich. In a simple formula, one's money should be divided in four and spent to make more money, ensuring the future: Gather riches like bees who work pick up pollen. Riches grow like a termite hill suddenly piling up. Gathering wealth in this way, a householder has enough for family and holds on to friends. That wealth is divided into four equal parts:

1. The first portion is to enjoy here and now.
2. The second is used to pay off debts.
3. The third is used to purchase inventory.
4. The fourth is set aside as savings for times of trouble.

• Did the Buddha really care about money? As Prince Siddhartha, he was born rich and influential because his homeland, Kapilavastu (at the foothills of the Himalayas in a part of the range known as the Hindu Kush, Afghanistan not Nepal), was on the Silk Route. Many rich and powerful kings befriended him. His greatest lay-devotee was known as the millionaire (Anathapindika, Sudatta the Banker, his foremost male patron and supporter), who was worth so much money that he was a kind of Mansa Musa. The Buddha also had the great Ven. Sivali, foremost in receiving alms due to his previous store of skillful karma of giving dana. So money (gold, silver, cattle, fields, servants, property) was no object, and the Buddha had no love or need of it, having renounced all such worldly things, but his supporters loved it. So he taught them about making merit (punya) so they would always have all they needed.

Avoid wasting money

Well, I'm not really wasting money. I'm actually saving more the more I buy. The ad says so.

[A penny earned is a penny saved seems to mean that we make as much money by not spending money as by earning it. Save up. How?] One is advised to avoid the “Six Drains on Wealth.”

“What six drains on wealth does one avoid? (“Drains on wealth” is apāyamukha, literally “openings for departure.”) This is emphasized since a good person wants as an heir to be a proper steward and not squander away the family fortune.

According to the Buddha, habitually engaging in the following things is a drain on wealth:

1. consuming intoxicants like alcohol (beer, wine, liquor);
2. roaming the streets at night;
3. frequenting parties and festivals;
4. gambling;
5. bad friends (companions);
6. laziness.

Alcohol?

The most common phrase in Pali for alcoholic beverages lists three items. Surā is brewed from grains and yeast (Bu Pc 51:2.1.2), meraya is made from sugars, fruits, or flowers (Bu Pc 51:2.1.4), and madya is a catchall term. Together they correspond with a modern classification of the potent drinks “beer, wine, and liquor.” See also Manu 11.94, Arthaśāstra 2.25, Suśrutasaṁhitā 1.45, Amarakośodghāṭana 3.6.

There are six drawbacks of drinking alcohol. Habitually tossing back beer, sipping wine, or guzzling liquors that cause intoxication causes problems like: (1) loss of wealth, (2) quarrels, (3) illness, (4) disrepute, (5) indecent exposure, (6) and weakened wisdom (liquid ignorance). More

• The Buddha sees a young person performing useless rituals and asks then teaches useful behaviors in their place. This becomes the most detailed sutra (DN 31) on lay Buddhist morality and ethics (suttacentral.net).

It's interesting, isn't it, how our English words "waste" and "waist" are homonyms? What goes on our waistline butt our excess? Why do we have so much excess that we have to carry it around like baggage? Could it be systemic? That is to say, could it be because of a system working upon us rather than the way we are told to think of it, which is just personally problematic? For instance, what does "mortgage" mean? You know that thing that will get you a house? It literally means "death pledge," because we make a "pledge" (gage) to keep paying until we die (mort as in mortician). There goes our whole life.

Inside the Secret Lives of the Ultra-Rich

(MagnatesMedia) ⭐ If one earned $1 per second, to make 1 million dollars would take about 11 and a half days. But to make 1 billion dollars would take over 31 and a half years.

See, it’s easy to think of wealth in terms of "rich or poor," but broadly speaking, there are arguably Five Different Levels of Rich. At each level, things change very drastically.

The difference between what a millionaire can do and what a billionaire can do is simply staggering.

This video explores what life is like at each of these different wealth levels, delving into how the ultra-rich spend their money, including some of their most bizarre and extravagant purchases.

But as one watches, one realizes that one of the biggest changes that happens at each wealth level is perspective. This is because prices feel relative to how much one earns.

So if we compare someone whose earning $40,000 a year with someone earning 400 million a year, it’s 10,000 times more. This means a Lamborghini that costs $300,000 to them is the equivalent of spending $30. A $10 million piece of art? That feels like $1,000.

So while to us these purchases would feel major, to a billionaire it’s not even something they need to think about. And of course, when one is that wealthy, it’s not just items and experiences one can buy.

Let’s instead start off with the first level of rich: The Top 1%. Even though this phrase is synonymous with being extremely rich, if one's income is over $200,000 a year, one is technically part of the Top 1% of earners in the world. So being in the Top 1% may not make one feel quite as rich as one might think. 

This is why beyond this level, wealth starts being measured in net worth rather than income, as the more wealth one has the more assets one has, and one is probably not making one's money from a salary.

So the next level of rich is a net worth of $10 million-$30 million. This level of wealth...

This video looks at ALL the other levels of wealth, including the difference between millionaires and billionaires. What are some of the craziest things rich people buy? What are some of the most expensive items ever made and rarest purchases the ultra-rich make?

Let's visualize wealth in different ways, looking at wealth inequality, understanding how billionaires buy a lot more than just expensive items and special experiences.

During this weekend's Republican presidential debates, candidates took aim at the military strategy war-loving President B.S. Obama unveiled late last week:

He vows cuts in overt military spending and a stepped-up focus on the Asia-Pacific region as well as increased use of illegal drone strikes that have targeted civilians, reporters, and alleged "militants" in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and throughout the Horn of Africa.



In a discussion about Obama’s new strategy with William Hartung, director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, it is revealed that Obama is keeping levels equal to the Bush-Cheney administration. Ignoring the only peace candidate, Ron Paul, Hartung examines alternatives presented by Mittens Romney, the GOP front-runner in New Hampshire. "His plan would be sort of laughable, if it wasn’t so obscene," Hartung says.

"He’s talking about, let’s keep the military budget at 4 percent of gross domestic product, as if it was some sort of entitlement program for the Pentagon... He would spend something like $6.5 trillion over 10 years, which would be about a trillion-and-a-half more than the Obama plan... If he’s not going to raise taxes, it’s going to come straight out of domestic programs, which are already being hit quite substantially." More

The two party "Super Committee" is a Super Congress tasked with deficit reduction -- making cuts to pull the US out of debt. There is enough money in the country to not have this dilemma. It is a problem, like so many problems, of allocation.

We could tax the rich (at low pre-Bush Era rates). Or we could assess corporations more than their current effective-rate of zero. Or we might consider sending less money into the abyss of the "military-industrial complex" (Pres. Eisenhower), which as part of the "shadowy government" (Sen. Inouye), has its own funding anyway. But no.

The lines divide in another way: Democrats want to protect MediCare and social programs, whereas Republicans insist they have to protect the super rich and corporate personhood.

Given that both parties are largely corrupt, who would take the side of the bailed out, largely untaxed, welfare-siphoning super rich?

The "trickle down" theory of economics (the idea that if we give more and more money to the super rich, some of it will eventually fall down to the rest of the 99%) is a fiction that ignores the human needs of most American, even though they cost much less to provide than more tax breaks for the rich.

How deluded or insensitive must one be to imagine him or herself a beneficiary of so unfair a system?

Whatever happens after this catastrophic failure to reduce the deficit, at least country music superstar Taylor Swift's award for "artist of the year" is safe. At least we have that. (*Sigh*).

A Pew report says 2,319,258 Americans were in jail or prison at the start of 2008 — one out of every 99.1 adults, more than any other nation.

Three strikes laws have overcrowded the nation's prison system. Here are the results of a new report by the Pew Center's Public Safety Performance Project. In the end we find that "getting tough on criminals" is a feelgood slogan that has only gotten tough on taxpayers.

For some groups, "the incarceration numbers are especially startling," the report said. "While one in 30 men between the ages of 20 and 34 is behind bars, for Black males in that age group the figure is one in nine."

For Black women the news is even worse as...One in every 355 White women aged 35 to 39 is behind bars, compared with one of every 100 Black women in that age group. Using state-by-state data, the report says 2,319,258 Americans were in jail or prison at the start of 2008 — one out of every 99.1 adults. Whether per capita or in raw numbers, it's more than any other nation.

Solutions
The report cited Kansas and Texas as states that have acted decisively to slow the growth of their inmate population. They are making greater use of community supervision for low-risk offenders and employing sanctions other than re-imprisonment for offenders who commit technical violations of parole and probation rules.
