Mushroom Hunt, Wild Food Walk, L.A. (1/14)

Christopher Nyerges (schoolofself-reliance.com); Xochitl, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

We're looking for tree oysters. This is not them.
DETAILS:  Exact location sent upon registration ($65 or $45 for students and seniors). Saturday, January 14h, 2023, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm led by author and survivalist Christopher Nyerges in the Arroyo watershed are (near JPL).

We’ll venture into the watershed area through weeping willows and derelict waterways to see the now-greening flora of winter.
Guide to Wild Foods & Plants
We're in search of MUSHROOMS, WILD FOODS, and the unique RIPARIAN PLANTS of Tongavaar (as the Native American Tongva/Kizh called this area), now Los Angeles.

During this mushroom hunt/plant walk, we’ll learn about the unique riparian (riverside) things that grow, and the many uses of what we’ll see. We’ll see oaks, alders, sages, mulefat, mugwort, horehound, willow, nettles, and so on.

There are many other riparian plants, which we may or may not see, depending on conditions. We are sure to see many wild edibles that sprout at this time of year when it’s wet. And we should see a half dozen or so varieties of mushrooms sprouting chaotic from their beds.

The plan is to cook some of the edible ones if and when we find them. (Not all beautiful things are edible). There are always lots of surprises in store on these walks.
World's youngest mushroom expert
Bring water, and dress comfortably. This nature walk can be applied towards the School of Self-Reliance Ethnobotany certificate.
Led by prolific author, local expert, and full-time survivalist Christopher Nyerges.

Bhikkhu Bodhi's Compassion in Action

Bhikkhu Bodhi (buddhistglobalrelief.org); Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma BM), Wisdom Quarterly
Bhikkhu Bodhi made a choice to first help girls in the developing world (Buddhist Global Relief)

Can a scholar and hermit care about people?
Who says Theravada Buddhist monastics are just in it for themselves -- pursuing their own salvation (realization, enlightenment/awakening, and final nirvana)? They're mistaken.

There's no contradiction in saving oneself -- the only person we can save -- and helping others in every way we can.

Help females first, and thereby help everyone.
It's not only the Bodhisattva Ideal claimed by Mahayana, it's the expression of friendliness, compassion, positive empathy, and equanimity, the Four "Divine Abidings" (Brahma Viharas). Just ask Jewish-American scholar-monk Bhikkhu Bodhi, our beloved teacher, the translator (and organizer of many translations) of the classic texts. He saw the need and went beyond the meditation mat, the editorial desk, and the monastic cell to establish Buddhist Global Relief to help alleviate "real world" problems pressing on the needy simply to exist on the human plane.

The Buddha Gautama
We certainly need what the historical Buddha offered, liberation, but he offered much more than most realize. Not only the Dharma (the Path to Freedom, the Middle Way to Liberation, the road to the end of all suffering), he accounted for the present needs of all kinds of beings.

Not everyone is interested in nirvana, nor spirituality, nor the unseen. Most want a better life here and now, a better rebirth hereafter, rearising in the heavens, and he pointed the way to those goals. For the wise, he set out a path of complete liberation (nirodha-moksha), for reaching nirvana in this very life. Perhaps if beings had the necessities of life -- food, shelter, clean water, medicinal products, care, and purpose -- the loftier ideal of spiritual liberation would become very attractive.

Krishna the cowherd loves the flute
All are cordially invited to attend “Diwali: Festival of Lights’’ -- an evening of celebrating joy, music, culture, and peace at the historic Art of Living Dome in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, October 23rd.

Diwali is an age-old festival of lights traditionally originating in India. It celebrates peace, prosperity, and victory of light over darkness, and harmony for all.

During this event held for the Los Angeles community, coming together to connect, celebrate, and welcome the light of peace and prosperity into our lives, joy will reign above all else.

Diwali? Originating from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, it literally means rows (avali) of lights (deepa). This Festival of Lights symbolizes the vanquishing of ignorance (darkness) by the knowledge (light).

There are four aspects of Diwali:
  1. Lighting of lamps. The lights on Diwali are symbolic of spreading knowledge.
  2. Firecrackers: When an explosion happens on the outside, the explosion inside is diffused. This is the significance of firecrackers.
  3. Distribution of sweets. Sweets dispel bitterness and are symbolic of a renewed friendship.
  4. Feeling the abundance. It is a day to feel grateful for all that we have.
The celebration will begin with a short breathing and meditation session to relax the mind and feel the peace and joy within. When true wisdom dawns it gives rise to celebration, and in celebration we may lose focus or awareness.

So let us celebrate this Diwali with knowledge and feel the abundance. For those who have will be given more! This event will have all the aspects of celebration, which includes:

  • Laxmi Puja (devotional ceremony to Lakshmi),
  • followed by lighting lamps (diyas/tealight candles provided): There is an opportunity to make a personal sankalpa (deep wish) and offering. Sankalpa is a deep intention, since every manifestation has an intention behind it. We have many desires or intentions, however not all intentions come to fruition or manifestation. The process of taking a sankalpa is an ancient Vedic technique that uses mantras to invite the energy of the universe to help strengthen and manifest our intentions.
  • Lighting lamps and dance performances
  • Meditation
  • Dinner (vegetarian Indian cuisine).
All are welcome, and anyone who comes for the event can witness the puja (sacred ceremony). Come celebrate the light of happiness, joy, and SELF. FREE-$51: Tickets (Eventbrite)
