WHAT HAPPENED?

Mushroom heads for all: snug headwear for fans

The Arboretum sold out for everyone who failed to plan. It staggers entrance times, so while it was possible to get a ticket, one would miss most of the fair. The event was packed, the largest in years. Sun broke through the heavily chemtrail sprayed skies. Now the crisscross lines start with perfect X's, which would not happen in nature nor in ordinary flight paths overcrowded LA County. In any case, what was clear was soon covered over in an artificial and no doubt toxin mist. But the sun managed to break through at times. The Fair opened at 9:00 am, the Mushroom Hunt began at 10 with Olga from Smugtown, and it was followed by a fabulous Brando with a culinary demonstration that fed everyone -- hundreds of mushroom fans -- crowding the seating area. It was standing room only after a while, as the samples table was full of gawkers and vendors were hard at work keeping up with demand: medicinal tinctures, popular red-and-white mushroom hats (French berets), grow bags, dried delicacies, books, guide, posters, clothing, jewelry, and services. This is the only event that ever provided samples such as a choice of savory soup, sauteed morrells, black trumpets, or all three. There was a vegan food booth in the back with a line out the door. Then came the first speaker, Mycologist Else, talking about spores, which exists in the billions and trillions. "Spores are not seeds," she emphasized. Each needs a mate since one can create a small mat of tubule structures but must then meet with a partner spore to continue onto the mycelia phase. Mycelia is what keeps forest together, the Woodwide Web, breaking down matter and communicating between individual plants. (See Paul Stamets' Mycelium Running). A "mushroom" is the fruiting body of underground mycelia, what we see popping up from the ground or growing on trees. To study mushrooms and fungi soon becomes the study of trees and ecosystems. Our natural world would not be what it is without fungi.

This is a demonstrable fact, and if anyone who points it out makes others uncomfortable, it may be necessary to look up Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, white privilege, white fragility, and most of all IMPLICIT bias.

The New Jim Crow

We are becoming more aware of an inequitable system based on race, just as the Me Too Movement brought attention to the disparate treatment of women in Hollywood's movie and music industries. Awareness has not been enough. Systemic change is needed.

The Kombucha Mushroom People

Los Angeles tries. We're the center of the world, if not the entire solar system. So everything that is is biggest and best here, Hollywood adjacent. Beverly Hills builds houses, Brentwood estates, UCLA graduates students, USC football stars, and LAMS (Los Angeles Mycological Society) forages wild mushrooms more than any other place in America, except apparently for Telluride, Colorado's Mushroom Festival. If only we had more forests, marshland, and old-growth forests.

Instead, we're in a Mediterranean climate zone that looks in every way like a desert with sand dunes and precious little rain most of the time. Last weekend, LAMS held the annual Wild Mushroom Fair at LA's Arboretum. Maybe someday someone will film it, whereas six months ago, at the height of a warm summer high in the mountains, Telluride outdid the City of Angels by celebrating a class of magic mushrooms called psilocybe, which contain two "magical" (entheogenic) substances known as psilocybin and psilocin.

The SCOBY produces the fizzy drink kombucha

Kombucha (the bubbly drink made of a symbiotic mix of probiotic bacteria and yeast) is not a mushroom, but it sure looks like one sitting atop a sugary drink of polyphenol-rich tea. The tea provides the protein to form of symbiotic community of beneficial organisms, and the sugar feeds them. The community is called the SCOBY (symbiotic community of bacteria and yeast). What does it want? More SUGAR! It will keep growing, leaving traces of "mother" (the rust found in unfiltered apple cider vinegar), creating new generations. Like a UFO, it drops discs of new SCOBYs.

• Surā (सुरा): Indigenous beer beverage prepared with sugars from cereals or jaggery (palm sugar) and other spices that are naturally fermented. It is beneficial for the emaciated and those suffering from obstruction in urine, piles, alleviates vata (wind imbalance) and useful in anemia. Āyurveda (आयुर्वेद) is the branch of ancient Indian science dealing with medicine, herbalism, taxology, anatomy, surgery, alchemy, and related topics. Who would drink alcohol-free moonshine?

A powerful storm system is forecast to unleash heavy rain, large hail, strong winds, and thunderstorms capable of spinning up tornadoes this week across much of the south-central United States.

This area was battered just last week by deadly storms. The low-pressure system invigorated by moisture from the Gulf of Mexico began a slow, multi-day journey from Texas to the Great Lakes region on Eclipse Monday (4/8/24).

As it headed east, severe weather was expected to hit the Gulf Coast, the mid-Atlantic, and the Midwest regions, the National Weather Service said.

The threatening forecast led organizers of The Texas Eclipse Festival to end the celebration early Monday and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to activate emergency response resources.

More than 30 million Americans from eastern Texas to Mississippi were at risk of severe weather Tuesday, when heavy rain, wind, "large hail," and several tornadoes were expected to lash the region, the storm prediction center said.

Meanwhile, SoCal had clear skies in the L.A. metropolitan area for viewing the partial eclipse.
