BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand is further tightening control of cannabis by banning sales of the plant to those without prescriptions. Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis in 2022, in a move that boosted Thailand’s tourism and farming, and spawned thousands of shops. But the country has faced public backlash over allegations that under-regulation has made the drug available to children and caused addiction. Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin signed an order Monday that bans shops from selling cannabis to customers without a prescription. It also seeks to reclassify cannabis buds as a controlled herb. Canada now world's largest legal marijuana marketplace
TORONTO, Canada - Ian Power was among the first to buy legal recreational cannabis in Canada, but he has no plans to smoke it. He plans to frame it. Canada became the largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace as sales began early Wednesday in Newfoundland. Power was first in line at a store in St. John's, Newfoundland.

When is it too much weed? Pot becomes "beer"
( "I am going to frame it and hang it on my wall. I'm not even going to smoke it. I'm just going to save it forever," Power said.
And there was more good news for pot aficionados: Hours before a handful of retail outlets opened in the country's easternmost province a federal official told the Associated Press that Canada will pardon all those with convictions for possessing up to 30 grams of marijuana, the now-legal threshold.
No amount is too much = Addiction.
A formal announcement was planned for later Wednesday. The official, who was not authorized to speak public ahead of the announcement, said those who want to take advantage of the pardons will have to apply.
Canada has had legal medical marijuana since 2001 and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has spent two years working toward expanding that to include recreational marijuana. The goal is to better reflect society's changing opinion about marijuana and bring black market operators into a regulated system.

As Canada legalizes marijuana, other countries likely to follow
SEATTLE, Washington (Oct. 18, 2018) - More than two
dozen countries (13+) have relaxed their cannabis or other drug laws, and a
number could consider legalizing weed in the not-too-distant future. The
South American nation of Uruguay was first to legalize pot in
2013. Canada became the second on Wednesday (Oct. 17), and its size and global
standing likely will encourage others to follow. Here's a look at other
nations that could be influenced by Canada's legalization:More
SF supervisors approved regulations for the sale of recreational marijuana following weeks of emotional debate over where to allow new stores. Rules approved by the Board of Supervisors today call for a 600-foot buffer zone from schools and tobacco and alcohol stores.
San Francisco officials adopted recreational marijuana rules [in addition to medical cannabis] favored by pot advocates, but not without heated discussions over local control in a tightly packed city where neighborhoods differ wildly in politics and character.
The move could allow sales to start the first week of January, just after recreational pot becomes legal across California. But it had been surprisingly difficult for the pot-friendly city to adopt local rules required for growers and retailers to get a state permit to sell the drug.
San Francisco embraces its marijuana culture, celebrating the annual 4/20 holiday with a group smoke-out on Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park, near the head shops of Haight-Ashbury district. Scoring a medical marijuana card to buy pot is cheap and easy. More
A bill pending in the Legislature would allow pot growers and retailers to reclassify their recreational pot as medical pot if a change in federal law or enforcement occurs.
It's the boldest attempt yet by a U.S. marijuana state to avoid federal intervention in its weed market.
The bill would allow Colorado's 500 or so licensed recreational pot growers to instantly reclassify their weed. A switch would cost the state more than $100 million a year because Colorado taxes medical pot much more lightly than recreational weed -- 2.9 percent versus 17.9 percent.
The measure says licensed growers could immediately become medical licensees "based on a business need due to a change in local, state or federal law or enforcement policy."

The change wouldn't take recreational marijuana off the books, but it wouldn't entirely safeguard it either. What it could do is help growers protect their inventory in case federal authorities start seizing recreational pot.
The provision is getting a lot of attention in the marijuana industry following recent comments from members of President Donald Trump's administration.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer has said there's a "big difference" between medical and recreational pot. More
