Buddhist Thailand BANS cannabis

Thailand legalized non-prescription cannabis sales in 2022 but has reversed (Reuters/Jorge Silva)
BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand is further tightening control of cannabis by banning sales of the plant to those without prescriptions. Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis in 2022, in a move that boosted Thailand’s tourism and farming, and spawned thousands of shops. But the country has faced public backlash over allegations that under-regulation has made the drug available to children and caused addiction. Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin signed an order Monday that bans shops from selling cannabis to customers without a prescription. It also seeks to reclassify cannabis buds as a controlled herbThailand further tightening controls on cannabis sales (AP News)

Censoring doctors about COVID-19? (TJDS)

Jimmy Dore (jimmydorecomedy.com); Pfc. Sandoval, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

California law CRIMINALIZES medical doctors’ free speech about COVID-19 even after pandemic has all but settled into endemic status, a nothing burger compared to the fear-spawning garbage we were constantly fed before by a complicit mainstream media that dared not step out of line. Would-be future US President Gavin Newsom is doing anything he can to run without announcing, at the ready to replace senile Biden and mendacious Harris.

Racist Japan? Japanese against Japanese

Evan Hadfield (Rare Earth, Aug. 15, 2017); CC Liu, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

How to destroy people: Make them "untouchable"
Hey, f*ck, this happened to me in the USA!
Japan's Burakumin ("village people") are a people within a people. For hundreds of years they experienced direct persecution that has kept them from being fully functional members of society.

Even though they were released from their low caste in the 1800's, the stigma attached to them remains to this day.

The one thing this look is missing that the maker wishes he'd added, is the historic discrimination against Koreans and how it is interwoven into the village folk (and modern-day Yakuza). It is worth looking into for anyone itching to learn and understand more.

Criminalizing critics of Israel: Congress considers bills to fine and jail backers of BDS
BDS Movement: bdsmovement.net
U.S. lawmakers are seeking to criminally outlaw support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against [CIA-backed] Israel.

If a proposed bipartisan law is passed, backers of BDS could face up to 20 years in prison and a million-dollar fine.

Democracy Now! speaks to Rabbi Joseph Berman of Jewish Voice for Peace and Ryan Grim of The Intercept.

His latest article is titled "U.S. Lawmakers Seek to Criminally Outlaw Support for Boycott Campaign Against Israel."

HOST AMY GOODMAN: Civil rights groups are warning a pair of bipartisan bills targeting boycotts of Israel and Israeli settlements [in Palestine] would criminalize free speech and peaceful protest.

The Israel Anti-Boycott Act would make it a felony for U.S. citizens to support boycotts of Israel and Israeli settlements, punishable by at least a $250,000 fine, with a maximum penalty of a fine of $1 million and 20 years in prison.

So far 46 senators -- 31 Republican, 15 Democrat -- and 234 Congress members, from both sides of the aisle, support the legislation.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC, reportedly helped craft the bill and has made its passage one of the group’s top lobbying priorities for the year.

In a letter Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU, urged senators to oppose the bill’s passage.

The ACLU wrote, "We take no position for or against the effort to boycott Israel or any foreign country, for that matter. However, we do assert that the government cannot, consistent with the First Amendment, punish U.S. persons based solely on their expressed political beliefs." More ()

Take Action: Pro-Israel attack on US freedom

Born Jewish...practicing Buddhist
One of the most recent, and most pernicious, pieces of anti-boycott, divestment, sanctions legislation at the federal level is getting renewed attention right now.

On July 18, the American Civil Liberties Union released a letter to the Senate and a letter to the House of Representatives, urging them to oppose the bill because it violates the Constitution and discriminates against people “for no reason other than their political beliefs.”

The Intercept published an article highlighting how “the criminalization of political speech and activism against Israel has become one of the gravest threats to free speech in the West.” Jewish Voice for Peace [with Wisdom Quarterly] opposes the legislation and has issued a backgrounder for engagement with Congress.

Future "felons" protesting Israel: Anti-Semites working for the ACLA and BDS Movement?

What does the bill actually do?
We've got the power. We've got to use it.
The Israel Anti-Boycott Act (S. 720/ H.R. 1697) is the latest, and most extreme, of a series of unconstitutional anti-boycott legislation at both the federal and state level.

The law aims to quell the movement for Palestinian rights by penalizing companies and individuals engaged in commerce for using the nonviolent tactics of boycott, divestment, and sanctions to hold Israel accountable for violations of Palestinian rights.

First introduced in March, this bill seeks to amend two laws -- the Export Administration Act of 1979 and the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945 -- to penalize companies that participate in boycotts, and to preempt efforts by international governmental organizations from complying with international law and calling for an end to trade with Israel’s settlements or companies that operate in the settlements.

Gonna be a good boy like Obama? - Better!
Of course, as the ACLU letter points out, millions of people and businesses do not do business with Israel for any number of reasons.

This law would only punish those whose lack of business-ties to Israel or the illegal settlements in Palestine is based on their political beliefs -- which is why it is discriminatory in addition to being a threat to free speech.

We must kill others to protect our children.
The bill opposes the creation of a database of Israeli settlement companies by the UN Human Rights Council and any efforts to boycott those companies’ products. The bill categorizes violations as felonies, and the potential penalties are steep: a minimum $250,000 civil penalty and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years imprisonment.

What doesn’t the bill do?
I trusted the CIA's Ben "Bibi" Netanyahu.
It does not make it illegal to support the Palestinian-led call for boycott, divestment, and sanctions. It does not make it illegal for individual consumers to boycott Israeli or settlement products.

While this legislation is horrible, it is important not to exaggerate the potential impacts of the legislation and thereby add to the chilling effect against advocacy for human rights in Palestine. More

Festivals: Partying in a Police State (video)

Amber Dorrian, Dev, Pat Macpherson, Irma Quintero, Wisdom Quarterly
() The truth is closer than can be shared on the corporate media controlled YouTube. The Brave New World Order looms large like carrot and an Orwellian dystopia will be the stick. Our day is coming.

Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. What else is there to do in a police state? There are so many "festivals" beginning this weekend in Southern California. Today kicks off Coachella Weekends I and II.

Tomorrow Pasadena, in association with the Armory Arts Center, holds its annual spring Earth and Arts Festival. Next weekend the great yoga experiment, running counter to other big draws around town, is the first, soon-to-go-worldwide Tadasana Yoga Festival.

Why go to any of them? In a time conflict, depression, and general hopelessness, diversion seems to make sense.

Hedonism feels right. My distress and disappointment are rooted in sensual craving. If I itch, I scratch. If I crave, I seek pleasure or immediate relief.

Yes, of course, it doesn't really work. The Buddha was right. Craving, not the lack of pleasure, is the problem.

Police State?

"Scenes of a Crime" police state arrest and interrogation tactics documentary: Opens in LA on Friday the 13th at Laemmle’s Music Hall. A Q&A with the directors follows the 7:20 pm screenings on Friday and Saturday. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times says, “Be prepared to be outraged. A cool documentary that makes the blood boil, it examines how people can be psychologically manipulated [by police] into confessing [whether they are guilty of anything or not].”

More eating will not make one less hungry, or obese people would be the most satisfied. They are the hungriest, the loneliest, the most empty-feeling. Does that mean the starving are doing well? No, of course not. If their minds crave, they suffer worse than the overfed. The overfed can take comfort in the proof that having overeaten did not fix or heal anything. The starving might still hold out hope that it will.

I "know" better. But I still "feel" bad. And my mind can hardly think of anything better to run to than escapism -- friends, drinks, loud music, maybe getting hit on, maybe meeting The One, reckless abandon, risk taking, moving my body until I'm exhausted.

What would the economy without ravers, festival goers, and hard partiers? The weekends bring in most of the revenue earned by bars, restaurants, and clubs. It's raining now, but the sun will soon be out. Things will get better.

But until the police state lightens up -- until the Occupy Movement stops playing right into their hands -- nothing feels more compelling than partying anywhere, anytime, any place.

Coachella and the last slew of festivals before the December 21, 2012 end of the world Ke$ha and Britney Spears warns about is as good as any place to start.

"Run From the Cure" (full movie)

()

The following presentation of RUN FROM THE CURE: The Rick Simpson Story was made possible by Rick Simpson and video producer Christian Laurette. It is given free to teach us how to heal ourselves of chronic disease and serious illness using cannabinoids (from cannabis, a form of hemp).

Those who have been cured are are not asking anyone if it works. They are telling us it works. It is not a debate about would it work, might it work, could it possibly work? It has worked and continues to work.

Many inexperienced, uneducated people speak with minds full of bias about a life-saving plant they actually know nothing about. As a result they give bad advice and, in many cases, make horribly ignorant remarks. They decry the people who bring forward controversial information as if having a choice or hearing an alternative were a bad thing.

Let your food be your medicinal cure, or synthetic chemicals are likely to become your costly treatments. Comment on YouTube

End of Organic Farming? (H.R. 875)

LINK or DOWNLOAD (iPod/PSP)

"The end of organic farming as we know it?"
The Accidental Yogist (April 10, 2009)

Recently there has been a flurry of messages about HR 875, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, and how it could criminalize organic farming. Here's one message:

Protect our organic foods!!!!
Let your voice be HEARD, SPREAD the word, and SPEAK UP NOW!

H.R. 875 Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, if passed, will criminalize organic farms, force ORGANIC farms to use pesticides and force us to use them in our own backyards. No surprise here as MONSANTO is one of the backers of this bill. Monsanto is the world's largest herbicide and pesticide company and the leading producer of genetically engineered seeds [GMOs] which are now causing unexpected diseases in humans and evil on many other levels. Watch the Future of Food.
  • There is an enormous rush to get this into law within the next two weeks before people realize what's happening.
  • This bill will require organic farms to use specific fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays dictated to "make sure there is no danger to the public food supply."
  • There are 40 co-sponsors to the bill and six of the 40 are from California.

Leavemyfoodalone.org talks about the consequences of the bill, which is currently under review:

In its current form, the bill could prevent small local organic farms and community gardeners from growing and selling you nutritious, truly fresh, organic produce. It would crush our small local food producers by imposing heavy government regulation that only large corporations could adhere to. Imagine:

  • No more farmers markets.
  • No more garden fresh, seasonal ingredients from the local farmer at your favorite restaurant.
  • No more roadside stands with fresh picked sweet corn, juicy ripe tomatoes, or refreshing watermelons in the summer.
  • Americans would essentially be forced to only eat corporately manufactured, chemically treated, hermetically sealed, irradiated fruits and vegetables.
  • Stop this abomination now!

Always the skeptic, I've postponed signing any petitions until I've had a chance to learn more about the issue.

And on April 11th, on KCRW's Good Food, host Evan Kleiman talked with Tom Philpott of grist.org about the myths and facts of this bill. The interview is accessible from the archives and downloadable free for podcast from KCRW. More>>

No? The Internets are abuzz with accounts of a House bill, allegedly sponsored by Monsanto and pushed through Congress by its lackeys, that would "criminalize organic farming" and even backyard gardening. "The bill is monstrous on level after level — the power it would give to Monsanto, the criminalization of seed banking, the prison terms, and confiscatory fines for farmers, the 24 hour GPS tracking of their animals, the easements on their property to allow for warrantless government entry, the stripping away of their property rights... There have been hysterical missives about H.R. 875. They are difficult to square with the text of the bill, which is admittedly vague. For example, the bill seeks to regulate any "food production facility" which it defines as "any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation."
