Zen Buddhism is a major school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China (where it is called Chan, short for channa, which is the Chinese attempt to say jhana, which is the Pali pronunciation of Sanskrit dhyana) and later spread to Japan.
The Japanese term "Zen" comes from the Sanskrit word dhyana, which refers to a state of deep meditation and awareness. (It is disputed what the difference between dharana and dhyana is in Yoga's Eightfold Path, as both are sometimes called "meditation" in English).
Zen emphasizes the experience of direct, intuitive realization of the nature of reality and the attainment of spiritual enlightenment (kensho, satori).
There are two names considered most important to the development of Zen are, Dogen and Hakuin. Dogen Kigen (1200-1253) was the founder of Soto Zen. He became obsessed with a question as a young man, and it motivated his search for Truth.
Simply put, the answer Dogen came to was: Practice itself is an expression of enlightenment. Because of this conclusion, one of the main practices of Soto Zen became Shikantaza, which means "just sitting."
In Shikantaza (as meditation), one merely sits. There is no practice of concentration, breath counting, and so on. One merely sits. As Dogen said, “You cannot get it wrong.”
Soto Zen is known as a gradual enlightenment school, meaning that over time one eventually realizes one's own inherent Buddha-nature.
Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) was the founder of the Rinzai (not Soto) school of Zen Buddhism.

(Science Friday) Last month, the first psychedelic therapy treatment came before the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for a vote. It entailed using MDMA, also known as ecstasy, E, or molly, to treat PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
MDMA therapy has looked promising as a treatment for PTSD and other mental health conditions in some studies.
[It was thought by many in MAPS or the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) to be a slam dunk for the first approval before moving on to passing magic mushrooms, DMT, and other scientifically-validated entheogens.]
But the FDA scientific advisory panel that evaluated this treatment voted overwhelminglyagainst approving it.
[For one thing, how would Big Pharma make so much money on endless "treatments" if someone comes up with an actual "cure" for a serious ailment?]
Many of the arguments against approval had less to do with MDMA itself than with the methodology of the clinical trials done by Lykos Therapeutics, formerly the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).
McNamee, who joined the trial for treatment of PTSD, is also a licensed psychotherapist and researcher of trauma and psychotherapy at McGill University in Montreal.
She joins Science Friday guest host Rachel Feltman alongside Dr. Eiko Fried, a methodologist and psychologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, to discuss the decision.

China's lunar rover, leaves wheel marks after leaving the lander that
touched down on the surface of the far side of the moon. A Chinese
spacecraft on Thursday, Jan. 3, made the first-ever landing on the far
side of the moon, state media said. The lunar explorer Chang'e 4 touched
down at 10:26 a.m., China Central Television said in a brief
announcement at the top of its noon news broadcast (China National
Space Administration/Xinhua News Agency via AP).

BEIJING, China - The Chinese
rover on the "dark" side of the moon is making its tracks on the soft
lunar surface.
The Jade Rabbit 2 rover drove off its lander's ramp and
onto the soft, snow-like surface at 10:22 p.m. Thursday, about 12 hours
after a Chinese spacecraft made the first-ever landing on the moon's far
side.
A photo posted online by China's space agency showed tracks the
rover left as headed away from the spacecraft.
"It's a small step for the rover, but one giant
leap for the Chinese nation," Wu Weiren, the chief designer of the Lunar
Exploration Project, told state broadcaster CCTV. "This giant leap is a
decisive move for our exploration of space and the conquering of the
universe."
Exploring the cosmos from the far side of the moon
could eventually help scientists learn more about the early days of the
solar system and even the birth of the universe's first stars. The far
side can't be seen from Earth and is popularly called the "dark side"
because it is relatively unknown, not because it lacks sunlight.
Three nations — the United States, the former
Soviet Union, and more recently China — have sent spacecraft to the near
side of the moon, but the latest landing is the first on the far side.
That side has been observed many times from lunar orbit but never up
close.
The
mission highlights China's growing ambitions to rival the U.S., Russia,
and Europe in space and, more broadly, to cement its position as a

Some singles resort to renting a boyfriend or girlfriend (who are just for show, not gaudy good times)
for the New Year to avoid the awkwardness.
Like Xmas in the West, people exchange gifts during the Chinese Spring
Festival. The most common gifts are red envelopes.
Red envelopes have
money inside and are given to children and (retired) seniors. It is not a
custom to give red envelopes to (working) adults, except by employers.
Praying in a temple during Chinese New Year is said to be a
particularly blessed activity. It will lead to a smooth year.

BEIJING - China and Burma (renamed "Myanmar" by the military dictatorship) said Saturday that they have pledged to forge closer ties as "blood brothers," as Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi got set to wrap up a visit to Beijing, her first diplomatic trip since taking power in March.
