Mindfulness of Eating (meditation)

This is regular eating, mindless and full of craving (for dopamine). How is it done mindfully?

I don't want to look fat (muffin topping) in a bikini at the pool party (collegepill.com)

Budai, the Fat Happy Bodhisattva
What is the FAT founder of world's third largest religion (when the 1 billion uncounted Buddhists in communist, and therefore officially atheist, Buddhists are counted) in the world going to teach us about being fit? The fact is the popular depiction of "Fat Happy Buddha" is not the historical Buddha Shakyamuni (born Prince Siddhartha Gautama) but rather a monk (now elevated to bodhisattva) named Budai (also Putai, Hotei), a Chinese monk with a big sack of candy for children, a luck-bringing jolly fellow very reminiscent of the West's Santa Claus.

Dalai Lama on his next reincarnation

Drop delusion of self to help everyone. - Psychology highly developed in India: Abhidhamma
Dalai Lama on rebirth and his planned reincarnation: Death isn't end of everything; samsara goes on

(Dechen wangdi 🇨🇦) June 3, 2025: "H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama on his Reincarnation" [Is the 14th Dalai Lama, the former pope-king of a school of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism and a world renown personality, a Buddhist celebrity, planning a trip to Shangri-La or Shambhala, and is this way of hinting he's going? The world will have to wait and see. For many, a better question than his future tulku status might be, "Who is the Dalai Lama?" We all think we know him, or know about him, but as John Oliver showed, few know anything once they are actually asked. Last Week Tonight sought to remedy that with a few good laughs:]

Illusions, reality lies using autocorrect

Our existence is a lie…and here’s the proof
(Solace Fox)) March 8, 2025: Reality isn’t what it seems. What if everything we experience is just a carefully constructed illusion the mind is producing?

[There is a "mind only" philosophy in Buddhism that says it is ALL maya. See Yogachara and Madhyamaka.] This video explores the hidden layers of existence, the illusions shaping our perceptions, and the truth that’s been right in front of us the whole time. Once we see it, there’s no going back.

Alan Watts: self-will. Jiriki vs. Tariki

55 Zen quotes to calm the mind
It might be good if Ananda's student, the struggling American meditator "Doggone," not to be confused with Ven. Dōgen, could learn from former soldier in the U.S. military Ven. Scott, who has found peace through Zen practice, which includes a lot of Taoist philosophy (and probably a sizeable amount of Confucianism and Shinto, too).

It's hard if not impossible to get a "pure Buddhism" as the Dharma is always steeped in a culture colored by shamanic and other preexisting spiritual traditions and philosophies.

Look, Everybody, I'm being mindful and Zen.
The West is a good example. We color the heck out of Buddhism to make it understandable, not realizing how much we're distorting what the Buddha taught. Early Buddhism was colored by Saka/Scythian (Central Asian) and Vedic proto-Indian (Brahminical, Magadhi, subcontinental views) customs and cultural baggage.

Not all forms of "Buddhism" are alike.
Instead of muscling through everything, efforting and straining, there's a better way that bends with the wind, goes with the flow, and thereby follows "The Way," the Tao.

Western translator and spiritual entertainer Alan Watts speaks of a great divide in outlook in Japan that developed in Buddhism: self-power (jiriki) versus other power (tariki).

Can we do the impossible and pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps? Or must we rely on some higher power, an outside source, to pull us out of the mire?

In practice, the latter may make more sense or seem much easier. The former may work, but it will take subtlety and great mindfulness (sati-patthana) so that ego is not just leading ego around, self-willed as it has so long been, thinking it's getting anywhere worth going.

Let's shut up and stop talking to ourselves to see

Is Pure Land Buddhism even still Buddhism?
Will faith in something outside ourselves us save us? Yes, there are the Three Treasures, the Three Jewels to whom we can go for enlightened guidance: the historical Buddha, the early Dharma, and the noble Sangha.
  • It is important to qualify these words as nowadays there are lots of buddhas or alleged "supremely enlightened teachers, and many latter-day interpretations of the Dharma (the Buddha's Teaching or Doctrine), and it is not the monastic Sangha ("spiritual community") that serves as this ultimate guide but rather the "noble" (Aryan/Ariya) or enlightened community, which refers to these eight people, who may or may not be Buddhist monastics.
  • It is NOT "going for refuge" but for "guidance"
  • Sarana means "going for guidance" not "refuge"
Can we just worship Goddess Guanyin instead?
Or must we take responsibility for our behavior and cultivate our own direct wisdom? (Of course we must do this, but the former may help in doing it).

Two Buddhisms have developed in Japan over this vital question of tariki versus jiriki. Shall we follow the example of the historical Buddha or the later (possibly make believe) "Cosmic Buddhas," who seem more like old time Vedic/Hindu gods (brahmas and devas) than the buddhas the Buddha talked about as having taught in the distant past.

There is Amitabha, Ksitigarbha, Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin, Kwan Yin, Kwannon), Budai, or whoever. It is the Kali Yuga (the "Decadent Age") after all, as Hinduism's holy books, the Vedas, tell Mahayana Buddhists. In these dark times, blind faith will seem far more attractive to faith-types full of attachments than the letting go asked of us by wisdom, confidence (saddha, reasoned and verifiable faith, conviction), and a persevering-practice.

Sit a little every day; that is far more powerful thana marathon effort every so often. Practice is key. Even trying to sit once will make this tariki vs. jiriki debate suddenly make sense. In the meantime, listen to Alan Watts. He, though irascible with an irreducible rascality, knows a thing or two.

Peace is a choice for evolution (1/29)

PEACE CLASS with Mandy Kahn
Friends, Peace Class meets tonight (Wednesday). To join us, simply click on this Zoom link at 6:00 pm (Pacific Time) on Jan. 29th:
Feel free to share this link with friends and fellow humans. ALL are welcome. At last week's class, we talked about THE LAW OF PEACE-BY-CHOICE.

THE LAW OF PEACE-BY-CHOICE
Mindfulness Yoga at PRS: Meditating w/ Chaos & Uncertainty, multiple dates (Eventbrite)
.
Peace, Love, and Happiness versus? Your choice.
Sooner or later, all beings choose to live in a way that is peaceful, one that honors all beings. Peace-by-choice is the direction of all spiritual evolution. Choosing is not enforced; there is no need to enforce it.

A peaceful way of being is always ultimately chosen. There is no expected timeline for choosing to live in a peaceful and loving way. There is simply a natural law that all will choose to live this way eventually. Notice that it was not said that all must choose to live this way. No one ever has to choose it.

What's so great about sustainable practices?
But time is unending. In all that time-without-end, eventually everyone does choose it. We'll call this the Law of Peace-by-Choice. Think of it as a natural law, a bit like gravity. Gravity is not enforced; it simply exists. Peace-by-choice is not enforced — it is simply a path that all will eventually walk. [Could there be war without end? That would me unmanageable, untenable, and ultimately unsustainable, whereas peace is sustainable].

There is no external expectation regarding how quickly peace is chosen, and there is no time limit. Some may spend many lifetimes exploring other choices before choosing a peaceful way of being. And others may choose a peaceful expression right away. It is up to every being to choose how quickly that being wants to evolve.

Peace-by-choice is always the forward direction of evolution. Here's an analogy that helps explain how this law functions: Imagine a person lives in a hotel and that, at every meal, she may choose to eat whatever she likes from a large and varied buffet. Among the many options available is a cookie that we'll call the Peace Cookie. This person has complete free will to eat or not eat that cookie. There are many other desserts to choose from — war cakes and cruelty pies, massacre meringues and mass bombing mousses, and of course smart-Alec tarts.

The great clock in the sky says time's passing.
Perhaps this person might go an entire lifetime without trying this one delicious cookie, given there are so many other options to explore. But to understand how the law of peace-by-choice works, one must come to understand the endlessness of time (going on for aeons as explained by the Buddha).

If that person does not choose the cookie of peace during her first lifetime, she will be reborn again and will again have absolute free will to choose whatever she'd like from the buffet. And if she doesn't choose peace during her second lifetime, there will be a third and so on ad nauseum.

This process can go on as long as the chooser likes [that is, until she does something about it to bring all suffering to an end and gain nirvana]. Eventually, that cookie will be chosen. It might take thousands of lifetimes to choose it, or it might be chosen quickly.

It's not that it must be chosen but rather that, eventually, it always is chosen. Why? Eventually, everything else is unsustainable. Eventually, that person becomes curious about that cookie. At some point, all other options will have been tried. At some point, that cookie will become the most appealing option. Then it will be chosen.

And only when the cookie of peace has been eaten will the person realize that it is unlike every other food available at the buffet. It's not just a food — but a doorway to a new kind of experience. It's a doorway out of this dingy hotel for good. There is never any external pressure to try that cookie. It is simply always made available. There may even be obstacles to it. It is the free will of every person to choose it or not to choose it at any given moment. Free will is always honored by the universe.
And the law of peace-by-choice functions everywhere in the universe. All beings, wherever they reappear and whenever they are reborn, are subject to this law.

This law is how we evolve. There is a gravity-like pull that draws us towards choosing peace, but there is also a spirit around us that respects our timing and honors our free will. This law applies to us, and it applies to our neighbors. No matter how our neighbors might act, they are evolving towards their own peacefulness.

They might be evolving by not choosing peace yet. They might be evolving by eating a massacre meringue, or by shoveling slices of war cake right down others' throats. They might be evolving by appearing to do whatever seems to be the furthest thing from expressing peacefulness that they can find to do. Our neighbors might choose to furiously sample everything at that buffet, life after life, until they tire themselves out, until they discover for themselves how it feels to choose what isn't peace.

We might look at our neighbors and think, "No people could be further from peacefulness." However, there isn't anyone who isn't evolving towards choosing peacefulness at their own pace at all times. We do not need to regulate our neighbor's peace-choosing process because it is already regulated by natural law.

All-that-is has already determined that our neighbors will choose peace eventually. Knowing that, we can feel free to focus on our own evolution. Our neighbor's pace is our neighbors' choice to make. The opportunity we were reborn to have is the opportunity of the self. The question we came here to consider is this one: How quickly do I choose to evolve?

The Gnostic Creation Story (Eric Dubay)

The Gnostic Creation Story
Who Rewrote the Bible?
(Eric Dubay) May 1, 2024: Before the establishment of the Roman Orthodox Church, dating back to the first century A.D., the Gnostics were a sect of Christians with a very different set of beliefs from what the new blossoming religion of Christianity would soon become.

The Gnostics insisted they were in fact the original Christians and that the Roman Church leaders were imposters co-opting and changing their mythology.

Many original founders like Marcion [the creator of the first Bible] and Tatian were actually devout Gnostics who would later leave the Orthodoxy, claiming the church was “setting up the fraud of historic Christianity.”
Gnosticism continued to flourish alongside the Roman Church until it was declared heresy and outlawed by Emperor Constantine in 325 A.D.

Once the Orthodox Bible became canonized, all extra-biblical Gnostic gospels (the Apocrypha) were considered heretical and either hidden or destroyed on threat of death.

By the turn of the next century, any remaining Gnostics still openly practicing were hunted down as heretics...
  • What's so special about Marcion? Marcion concluded that many of the teachings of [good, kind, merciful] Jesus were incompatible with the actions of [genocidal, jealous, angry] Yahweh (YWVH, Jehovah). He concluded this by studying the Hebrew Bible [a simplistic version of the story told in a crude language with only 8,000 original words, which was derived from the much more sophisticated Ancient Greek and its half million words, according to classicist Dr. D.A.C. Hillman], along with received writings circulating in the nascent Church. Yahweh is characterized as the belligerent god of the Hebrew Bible. Marcion responded by developing a di-theistic system of belief around the year 144 [Note 2]. This notion of two gods — a Higher Transcendent One [a kind of Brahman] and a Lower World-Creator and Ruler [a kind of Maha Brahma] — allowed Marcion to reconcile perceived contradictions between harsh Christian Covenant theology and the nicer gospel proclaimed by the New Testament.

Who is the Ahriman or Antichrist (the Satan, the Deceiver)? Is it Joel Osteen?

Who is Ahriman? J.R.R. Tolkien, Rudolf Steiner, Elon Musk, Jordan Peterson
(Purpose In Action) To find out more about me, please visit my website at purpose-in-action.co.uk. This video delves into the concept of "Ahriman," the Persian name for Satan, and explores his influence on the modern world. From the collapse into lower impulses in the scientific community to the centralization of power and authority, see how Ahriman wants us to align our thoughts, feelings, and souls with this illusory material reality. Where can we see Ahrimanic influence, from Buddhist thought [those devils and jerks!] to J.R.R Tolkien's character Gollum? Let's examine potential modern-day incarnations of Ahriman, including the richest man in the world Elon Musk and bigmouth Prof. Jordan Peterson. Let's explore what we can do to counteract this influence and maintain our connection with something beyond the material world [something divine back in the realm of devas]. [Wait, is P.I.A. a British Muslim or Sikh?]

Joel Osteen exposed
(Polite Leader) [Hardcore Christians don't like this slickly produced, feelgood, motivational speaker and money grabber.] Televangelist Joel Osteen is the pastor of Lakewood Church in Texas and a New York Times bestselling author. His books, Your Best Life Now and Become a Better You, have sold millions of copies worldwide. But Joel Osteen teaches a false prosperity gospel or theology based on the New Age Law of Attraction philosophy that is contrary to the clear teaching of the Christian Bible.
