Nothing Higher to Live For: A Buddhist View of Romantic Love
(Leo Price) ...If life means nothing, then only pleasure is worthwhile. Or if life has meaning and we cannot get at it, then still only enjoyment matters.
This is the view of not only brutes but some sophisticated philosophers.
It slips into our unconscious by default when we hold no other. However, we are reluctant to entertain it.
Oh, Ro-Ro! - Oh, Jewels!!
We would rather, if we question ourselves about it at all, take as our "purpose" the
support of family,
search for truth or beauty,
improvement of society,
fame,
self-expression,
development of talent...
It might be fair to say that apart from these or beneath these, for many of us our fundamental purpose is the search for love, particularly romantic love.
The love of one person for another is often the floor onto which we fall after the collapse of other dreams.
It is thought of as solid when nothing else is, and although it frequently gives way and dumps us into a basement of despair, it still enjoys a reputation of dependability. No matter that such a reputation is illogical—it still flourishes and will continue to flourish regardless of what anyone says.
Love, or the MYTH of love, is the first, last, and sometimes the only refuge of uncomprehending human beings. What else makes our hearts pound? What else makes us swoon with tingly feelings? What else renders us so intensely alive, aching, pining, yearning, wishing, hoping, craving?
The SEARCH for love—the sublime, the nebulous, the all consuming—remains sacred in a world that increasingly despises the sacred.
When the heroic and transcendental are only memories, when religious institutions fill up with bureaucrats and social scientists, when nobody believes there is a sky beyond the ceiling, then there seems no other escape from the prison of self than throwing ourselves abandon into love.
With a grey age of spiritual deadness upon us, we love. We beg for love or grieve for love. We have nothing higher to live for.
Indeed, many take it on faith that romantic love is the highest thing to live for. Movies, popular literature, art, and music all relentlessly celebrate it as the one "truth" accessible to all.
This kind of love obliterates reason, as poets have long sweetly lamented, and this is part of its charm and power. Why? We want to be swept up and spirited out of our calculating selves. "Want" is the key word because in the spiritual void of modern life, the wanting of love becomes increasingly indistinguishable from love itself.
So powerful, so insistent is it that we seldom notice that the gratification it tempts us with is rare, yet the craving is relentless. Love addiction? Love is mostly in anticipation; it is an agony of anticipation; it is an ache for a completion not found in the dreary round of mundane routine. Dear Robert Redford, why do people keep dying? And not just famous ones neither. Sure, the Hollywood stars get most of the attention, but they don't do most of the dying. It's almost as if, hey, you don't suppose I, too, am going to die one day, do you? No, it's just that when a famous person dies, the whole world is reminded of Death (Mara), like you played that time on The Twilight Zone (Episode 81). What was that one about?

Life is samsara is beset by rebirth
An old woman is living in a nightmare. She an old woman who has fought a thousand battles with Death and always won. Now she's faced with a grim decision—whether or not to open a door. And in some strange and frightening way she knows that this seemingly ordinary door leads to the Twilight Zone.
PLOT: Wanda Dunn is an elderly and frail woman, who lives in a dark basement apartment in an abandoned tenement flat.
She is awakened one morning by an altercation outside, in which Harold Beldon (Robert Redford), a young police officer, is shot and falls just outside her door. Although he cries out that he is dying and pleads for her help, Dunn is reluctant as she knows Death takes many forms and is coming to claim her life.
While she eventually relents, she tells Beldon that she has no phone to call a doctor. Dunn is relieved when she touches him and doesn't die, which convinces her that he can't possibly be Death. (But it is).
Why did the Buddha recommend recalling "mindfulness of death"?
Attain The Deathless, and then you will never die.
MaraαΉasati ("mindfulness of death") is a Buddhist meditation practice of bringing the inevitability of death to mind, remembering (frequently bearing in mind without resistance) that death can strike at any time (AN 6.20). Therefore, what is the wise thing to do?
Avoid it, deny it, never think of it, and become angry with any reminder of it in polite company? No, this is no way to peace and enlightenment. Instead, we should practice vigilantly and assiduously (appamada), with a sense of urgency (samvega) in every moment, even in the time it takes to draw in a single breath.
Not being diligent every moment is called "negligence" by the Buddha (AN 6.19). In the earliest discourses (sutras) of the Buddha, the term maranasati is only explicitly defined twice, in the two suttas (AN 6.19 and AN 6.20).
Later Buddhist schools expanded the meaning of marana ("death") sati ("mindfulness") to include various visualization and contemplation techniques to dispassionately remain aware of death, which is as natural as rebirth.
Just as we keep being reborn in samsara, "the continued wandering on through life and death in pursuit of pleasure and fulfillment," so we keep dying. How could it be otherwise, for how could there be a coin with only heads and no tails (only a front without a back)? It is not possible. As soon as one springs into being, the other arises simultaneously.
The cultivation of maranasati is said to be conducive to right (balanced) effort and helpful in developing a sense of spiritual urgency (saαΉvega) and letting go/renunciation (nekkhamma) [1]. More
There is a state beyond the reach of death. It is not heaven. Death comes to heavenly beings, no matter how long lived. Many Buddhists aspire to a heavenly rebirth. That is in many ways superior to rebirth on the human plane. But there is at least one way in which the human plane is superior to any of the ordinary heavens (sagga, deva loka). Here in the human world, it is like being on the surf between the warm sand and the swirling, crashing, restless ocean. It is not possible to get too comfortable for long.
Suffering (dukkha = disappointment, dissatisfaction) soon finds us. But it is not so bad as drowning and bobbing and being thrown around out in the rip currents of the water. There is a balance here. We see death. We can't hardly forget it for long. We have our sandcastles wiped out. We can't hardly build an impervious abode to rest in. Even when it is the epoch of long life, even human lives of 80,000 years, it is still too short, not long enough to attain all we wished for.
Why did so many place faith in the Buddha?
Then there is NIRVANA, the ultimate bliss, liberation from the cycle of samsara, freedom from all suffering and all further rebirth. This nirvana has a synonym in "the deathless" or amata (amrita,ambrosia, the "elixir of immortality" used in a figurative sense for deathlessness).
It is hard to conceive of because all we have ever known in the phenomenal universe is conditional and composite, with everything composed of impermanent constituents. But nirvana is the unconditioned element. So there is nothing to compare it to. It would be like a turtle being asked by fish where he had been as no one had seen him.
The Turtle and the Fish
The turtle answers, "on dry land."
"Dry land? What is this 'dry land' you speak of, friend Turtle?"
"Well, Fish, um, you see, uh... Hmm."
"This 'dry land' of yours, is it cool and wet?"
"No, it is not cool and wet, Fish."
"Can you swim and dive into it?"
"No, you can't swim and dive into it."
"Can you drink it?"
"No, you can't drink it."
The Fish would determine, "Well, if it isn't cool and wet, can be swum or dived into, and is not drinkable, then this 'dry land' of yours must be complete nothingness and nonexistence!"
And the Turtle would be left with little to say other than, "That may be, Friends, that may be" as it went onto dry land again and bathed in the warm sun.

It always seemed that it would be nice to live in a country where Hollywood saw fit to do movies on all religions, but seeing what it does to Christianity, it's good that it does not see fit to warp every other religion. Secular Judaism gets the most exposure, but as for historical fantasies, it's all Cecil B. DeMille and Charlton Heston. Religion is the addictive opiate of the masses, so the government and its propaganda arm have to wield it to maintain control, so Christians should beware of what they are being fed. JC Superstar was good, coming from the Jewish perspective, but how much of it was real? John C. Reilly helped almost get a Siddhartha G Superstar play off the ground, possibly turning it into a spec script then a Broadway play and finally a big movie release. Alas, it was not to be because one of the first drafts was pretty darn good and accurate, having played in Westwood next to UCLA years ago in a tiny playhouse. Then in 2003, he played a Buddhist monk in the comedy Anger Management.

Known today as “the father of public relations” (called PR), Bernays (the nephew of Sigmund Freud) was responsible for campaigns that changed the lives and minds of the American citizen forever: having a hand in everything from political leaders, to smoking culture, and what [pig-eating] Americans ate for their breakfast. His infamous book Propaganda (book) gave rise to the many rules and regulations of public relations.
