Welcome to Life: The Singularity is ruined by lawyers. If this sobering piece of humor appeals, one may also enjoy the two novels that provided the inspiration for it, Jim Munroe's Everyone in Silico, which contains the idea of a corporate-sponsored afterlife, and Rudy Rucker's trippy Postsingular, which introduces the horrifying idea of consciousness slums.

"Welcome to California...Now go home" the funny bumper sticker reads. How funny is it? It is the sentiment of most residents in this place. We love tourist dollars and oddball visitors.
The City of Lost Angels is not all it's cracked up to be. There is no "Hollywood," just a [insert Trumpism] where mythical Hollywood used to be.
There are rich parts of L.A. They're exclusive. That means you can't go there. Oh, sure you can -- if you want to be pulled over, ticketed, towed, or given trouble.
Then there are the gated communities, which are police states there to keep you out and the rich in. But "rich" is relative. NIMBYism is rampant. Briggs recommends the travel book Blue Highways.

Slumdog Millionaire Celebration in India

MUMBAI, India – Children broke into Bollywood dance numbers and crowds cheered in the narrow lanes of a teeming Mumbai [formerly Bombay] slum on Monday as their hometown heroes nabbed Hollywood's highest honors.

Two of the child actors in "Slumdog Millionaire" were plucked from a desperately poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Mumbai to star in the rags-to-riches tale that stormed the Academy Awards.
The actors, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, and Rubina Ali, 9, were flown to Los Angeles for the ceremony, leaving their friends back home to gawk, beam, shout and dance in celebration. More>>
