Zen: Just sitting: A Good for Nothing Life

Shohaku Okumura: A Good for Nothing Life
( June 23, 2020) Explore the practice of zazen ("sitting meditation") and Soto Zen Buddhism with Abbot Shohaku Okumura and hear why shikantaza or "just sitting," facing a wall, transforms the lives of those who dare to do nothing.

Abbot Shohaku Okumura was interviewed by Interior Mythos Journeys in April of 2017 at the Sanshin Zen Community: sanshinji.org.

American Roshi Brad Warner on Abbot Shohaku Okumura
Short clips from this interview can be found here: Zazen is Good for Nothing.

Mission: The curriculum of Interior Mythos Journeys is a quest to explore contemporary mythic language that is in harmony with the 21st century, global, quantum scientific, and universal reality in which we all actually live. Learn more at interiormythos.com.

As we solitarily and collectively claim the force of a relevant contemporary mythos, we are delivered to the possibility of a life lived in depth, that is, the possibility of an authentic life. This is the path beneath the surface.

The Transformative Encounter: The Practice of Contemplation
In the current age this transformative encounter, as well as the practices that deliver us to this encounter and the personal connection that flows from this encounter, is seldom the focus of our lives. Many of us wander disoriented through life, often on a self-destructive path, in a world seen, understood, and measured primarily by the external environment. We are disconnected from the Connecting Myth.

We are disconnected from the interior depth to which the Connecting Myth might deliver us. Ironically, we have come to understand myth as a lie rather than a symbolic and metaphoric gateway to a deeper truth.

Mandela Effect is still happening (video)

Top 5 Mandela Effects: Is something editing our history?
(Esoteric Detective, June 23, 2016) Something very scary is happening, yet only a few people on the planet seem to be noticing that it's a real phenomenon, not just a quirk to dismiss.

People are experiencing collective memories from a different timeline or alternate version of reality. It has been dubbed the Mandela Effect, and it has some feel like they're living out a weird nightmare of disbelief. They are having to doubt themselves like they are being gaslighted (gaslit?) #MandelaEffect

I made a deal with the CIA to fight China.
Christian witch Dave Mustaine (founder of Metallica and Megadeth) loves war, wants to promote war and deadly fighting, wants to profit (through music sales) from a fever for war currently overtaking the US.

We're bombarded with constant "2 Minutes Hate" (1984) segments aimed at Russian President Putin in the mainstream media.

Slanted stories try to get public opinion to favor sending Ukraine billions as payment for being a sacrificial lamb for Western imperialism and NATO expansion.

This new Megadeth song is all about getting American kids fired up for war and glory, dulce et decorum est, getting them to sign on the dotted line, to send them out as "government issue" (G.I.) to serve as pawns in another in military-industrial complex money-making scheme.

Medieval Sex? Did they do it back then? (doc)

Dr. Janega (History Hit, 5/2/22); Ashley Wells, Pat Macpherson, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Medieval Pleasures: What was sex really like in the Middle Ages?
(History Hit) WARNING: Contains strong language and sexual content! Get ready to indulge in some medieval pleasures. In this three-part series, historian Dr. Eleanor Janega (@Going Medieval) takes us on a journey into the sumptuous world of sex, booze, and sport throughout the Medieval period.

Is it all right to talk about this subject?
In this episode, Dr. Janega and Dr. Kate Lister (@whoresofyore) take to the streets of York to uncover the sex lives of folks living here over 500 years ago.

Armed with medieval chat-up lines, they attempt to woo a suitor while revealing the hidden ribald meanings behind some common words and phrases, giving us insight into the diverse, bold, and unabashed sexual appetites of medieval people and the role the Church had in controlling the sex lives of Christian worshippers.

And at the Tower of London, she explores courtly love and how the royal bedchamber was a very crowded place, particularly when a regal marriage was consummated.

She also investigates the complicated rules governing the sex trade in the British capital, where almost anything goes as long as it happens in the approved Red Light District.

Prehistoric origins of sex? Sex at Dawn
Come with Dr. Janega as she ventures into the heady world of medieval pleasure...and if you want to know more about what went on in medieval bedrooms and beyond, check out Dr. Lister's fascinating new Betwixt the Sheets podcast on History Hit.

What can be heard on it is a discussion with Dr. Janega: pod.fo/e/11b847 They discuss all things -- aphrodisiacs, sex diaries, religious rules, as well as bizarre fertility treatments involving actual fish in places they should never go.

WARNING: This episode includes explicit language and adult themes!

Who was the ascetic Siddhartha saw?

Geethanjali Kids (animation); Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly
There have always been nomadic hermits (sramanas) apart from conceited brahmanas.
.
Herman Hesse echoes the tale.
Any Westerner who learns about Buddhism usually learns it with the allegorical story of the Buddha's life, from Scythian prince to Awakene Oned. The location changed from Central Asia (Gandhara, Afghanistan, Shakya Land, called Kapilavastu).

When the prince, living a luxurious sheltered life with his white pony (Kanthaka), three seasonal capitals and palaces, his beautiful young bride (Bimba Devi or Yasodhara), excellent education, and many friends, relatives, and fellow Scythians the Sakas, saw the Four Signs, he knew it was time to leave on a spiritual quest for proto-India.
With each rebirth, many troubles follow.
The first three signs (aging, sickness, and death) shook him and made him lose interest in a life of distractions. If life was beset with such unsatisfactoriness, lack of fulfillment, and suffering, what was the point? What could he offer his people if he could not guide them to any escape from the inevitable?

But he saw a fourth sign (hermit, recluse, renunciate, wandering ascetic, monastic). The question arises, who in the heck was that guy? If the future Buddha, who would awaken seven years later and establish a monastic sangha or community of male and female wandering ascetics, had yet to create saffron robed monks, who was this person?

Scythian comb from Solokha, 4th century. Scythians were goldsmiths with numerous mines.
,
It's not a flaw in the story. It's an indication how far back the tradition of wandering asceticism or shramanas (shamans, who seek direct experience of the divine, knowledge and vision). Even in those times and in that place Brahmins (the high caste temple priests of the Vedic religion, Brahmanism, and later Hinduism) existed.

But here far in the northwest frontier of future-India, Brahmins were subordinated to nobles or warrior caste individuals like the Sakas, an exceedingly proud and haughty recently settled nomadic people from Sakastan in Scythia around modern Afghanistan (Bamiyan, Mes Aynak, and Kabul as likely the three seasonal capitals of what is collectively called Kapilavastu or Kapilavatthu, Kapil = Kabul. See ranajitpal.com).

So what was the ancient practice of spiritual nomads, the wandering ascetics that existed in the Scythia of the Sakas even before Prince Siddhartha (the future Buddha) was born?

Scythian religion
Who was this pre-Buddhism wandering ascetic (sramana) who inspired Siddhartha to seek the direct experience of Truth and set up an organization so that men and women could do the same and come to realization in this very life?

Scythian religion refers to the mythology, ritual practices, and beliefs of the Scythian cultures, a collection of closely related ancient Iranian (Aryan) peoples.

They inhabited Central Asia and the Pontic–Caspian steppe in Eastern Europe throughout Classical Antiquity, spoke the Scythian language (itself a member of the Eastern Iranian language family), and which included:
  • the Alans,
  • the Scythians proper,
  • the Sarmatians,
  • the Sindi,
  • the Massagetae, and
  • the SAKA (the Buddha's Sakas, Shakyas, Indo-Scythians, Indo-Sakas, speakers of Pali).
What little is known of the religion is drawn from the work of the 5th century Greek historian and ethnographer Herodotus. Scythian religion is assumed to have been related to the earlier Proto-Indo-Iranian religion, and to have influenced later Slavic, Hungarian, and Turkic mythologies, as well as some contemporary Eastern Iranian and Ossetian traditions. What Daria says about '90s (and today)

(The Take, June 21, 2022) MTV's Daria Morgendorffer made it cool to be a wry and cynical loner.

Mike Judge (Beavis & Butt-Head) created Daria
This teen girl who didn’t care about popularity or trends was the picture-perfect example of ‘90s alienation. She was a surprising character for a channel (MTV) that often sold brash, extroverted, or overtly sexualized versions of females during that same period. Years later, Daria still resonates with anyone who’s ever questioned whether the problem is you or the system you’re living in – and it can help us understand cultural changes that were happening back in the 1990s.

Abortion: Racist Trump Rally: pro-white-life

AP.org via The Guardian; Jimmy Dore (jimmydorecomedy.com); Eds., Wisdom Quarterly
Illinois Republican tells Trump rally that Roe verdict a ‘victory for white life’ | The Guardian
.
I'm like that dictator but handsomer.
Racist Trump rally in Illinois? Many Republicans are more than pro-life. They're pro-white life. Was it a slip of the tongue? To ban Blacks from aborting babies? Republicans have said that Planned Parenthood is a racist organization with an unspoken goal of stopping racial minorities from giving birth.

Now that abortion has been criminalized in many places, who does one think will be disproportionately prosecuted for abortion crimes like driving to abortion, aiding and abetting someone by hailing an Uber or Lyft, or endangering a fetus?

Pro-choice demonstrations continue and are growing in downtown Los Angeles, where access is not being threatened. California Gov. Newsom, future president, virtue signals his pro-abortion stance.
With Roe v. Wade overturned, here are the states set to ban abortion

(News4JAX, June 24, 2022) The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that had provided a constitutional right to abortion. The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

As bad as Republicans are, who's more to blame? The ones who failed to prevent what they knew was coming (and were too weak to get beloved bipartisan Merrick Garland on the Court when Trump had no trouble forcing Kavanaugh down our throats) or the opportunists who take advantage of their majority?

Democrats more to blame than opportunistic Republicans

These are not the only things encompassed by the term, but they are three none of us are likely to be able to outstrip or escape. They will catch up to us. And if we are not freed of samsara by then, we will rue the day we were born. This is not a problem only once. These three happen endlessly due to rebirth. It is not only in this life that we will lose everything. It is all hurtling toward destruction. The Buddha provided a perfect solution, but ordinary people want only more birth (and therefore by default more death) and rebirth in better places. Virtue (morality) is enough to get that. For higher, more superlative worlds, samadhi (jhana) is needed. To transcend rebirth altogether, wisdom is needed.

Behold, 30 uber-beautiful Hollywood starlets who have changed for the worse. See how they looked then, in the 1960-1980s, and what they look like now, circa 2021.

**MADONNA: (Subreddit 64) /StBlaschek Feb 28 '20 edited Feb 28 '20) If it's any help, her Wikipedia page has been heavily edited, so I wouldn't take what it says too seriously.

I checked the edit history, and there are hundreds of edits, and most of them are silly. If I were you, and since it bothers you and your friend so much, I'd look through the edit history and see if her birth name has been changed.

Edit: I about drowned myself in wiki edits, but I found one from 2014 citing an article that discussed her legally changing her name to "Madonna Louise Ciccone" back in 2012. Why the heck would she legally change her name to "Madonna" if she was born Madonna?

RECONNECT: THE MOVIE ft. Dennis McKenna, Jordan Peterson, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Dr. Gabor Mate, Graham Hancock, Michael Pollan, more
(London Real) Back in 2012 I [Brian Rose] had my very first ayahuasca ceremony and, needless to say, I was terrified. But it ended up entirely changing my life and that of my future family.

Ayahuasca brew of three jungle plant medicines
This is why I decided to revisit the medicine in 2018, participating in three ayahuasca ceremonies over the course of one week in Costa Rica, to document the process.

In the film, we tackle my personal story of trying to build London Real into a global media and transformation company while also struggling with my own disconnection from friends, family, and my own species.

We also dive deep into the division and tribalism currently facing all of us around the world.

Exclusive clips from this Live Q&A as well as previously unseen footage from the making of the movie are now available to download, share, and repost.

Ajahn Brahm: unbelievable meditation secrets

Western comedian Ajahn Brahm (BSV); Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Methods of relaxation; handling unwholesome thoughts; powerful force of kindness
(BSV Dhamma Talks, June 13, 2015) What is the "secret" to success in meditation, for attaining the "meditative absorptions" or jhanas and "right-stillness" or samma-samadhi?

Once upon a time the wandering ascetic Siddhartha made a strong determination that he would not get up from his seat under a tree even if his blood should dry up until he won enlightenment. It didn't work and could never work until one genuinely gives up, lets go, and allows "meditation" (jhana) to happen. Rediscovering the purifying absorptions and allowing himself to experience sensuality-free pleasure (piti, joy) that derives from them, Siddhartha was well on his way to awakening.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ajahn Brahmavamso Mahathera (lovingly known to most as Ajahn Brahm) was born Peter Betts in London, England, on August 7, 1951. He came from a working-class background and won a scholarship to study theoretical physics at Cambridge University in the late 1960s.

After graduating from Cambridge, he taught high school for one year before travelling to Thailand to become a Buddhist monk and train with Ajahn Chah Mahathera ("Great Elder"). While still in his years as a junior monk, he was asked to undertake the compilation of an English language guide to the Buddhist Monastic Code (the Vinaya), which later became the basis for monastic rules in many Theravada monasteries in Western countries.

Scientists discover what was before Big Bang

The Void did it? "Form is emptiness, and the very emptiness is form. Form does not differ from emptiness, and emptiness does not differ from form. Whatever is form, that is emptiness. Whatever is emptiness, that is form..." (Mahayana Buddhism's Heart Sutra). What have these scientists been reading, Buddhist and Hindu literature?

Scientists discover what existed before the Big Bang
(Destiny, June 18, 2022) Modern science explains the origin of the universe with the Big Bang theory. It says our world arose from the explosion of singularity or a point in space-time where energy, density, and mass go to infinity and any dimension goes to zero. It’s a point where there’s no space, time, or matter. So where did this singularity come from, what preceded it, and what triggered the countdown to the Big Bang?
