Hypocrisy, poetry, iconoclasm in Zen

Wild Ways: Zen Poems of Ikkyu
Japanese Zen Buddhist priest Ikkyū (一休宗純, Ikkyū Sōjun) was an iconoclast with an "enlightenment certificate" (inkajo). He was born in 1394 and died in 1481. He was an eccentric, iconoclastic, "crazy wisdom" Japanese Zen Buddhist monk, poet, musician, alcoholic, and womanizer.

He had an impact on the infusion of Japanese art and literature with Zen attitudes and ideals [1]. He is perhaps best known for his radical approach to Zen, which included breaking Buddhist monastic precepts and his stance against celibacy [2, Note 1].
Biography
In 1394, Ikkyū was born in a small suburb of Kyoto, Japan. It is generally held that he was the illegitimate child of Emperor Go-Komatsu and a low-ranking court noblewoman [1]. His mother was forced to flee to Saga, where Ikkyū was raised by servants.

At the age of 5, Ikkyū was separated from his mother and placed in a Rinzai Zen temple in Kyoto, Japan called Ankoku-ji, as an acolyte [1, 5].

The temple masters taught Chinese culture and language as part of the curriculum, a method termed Gozan Zen. He was given the name "Shuken" and learned about Chinese poetry, art, and literature. More

Milarepa: Climbing Mt. Kailash (Pt. 5)

100,000 Songs of Milarepa
Jetsun Milarepa
(རྗེ་བཙུན་མི་ལ་རས་པ་) was a Tibetan siddha, who was famously known as a mass murderer when he was a young man before turning to Buddhism and allegedly becoming a highly accomplished Tibetan Buddhist (Bon-infused Vajrayana) disciple.

He is generally considered one of Tibet's most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He was a student of Marpa Lotsawa and a major figure in the history of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism [1]. He is also famous for the feat of climbing Mount Kailash. More

Arriving in California nearly penniless in the 1850s, Whitney would become the richest man in Placer County, owning over 27,000 acres. When Whitney passed away in 1913, he chose to be entombed in a pyramid, with the belief that it would bestow reincarnation on him. [He had no idea rebirth was inevitable in any case.]

What is Pyramid Meditation?
Meditation pyramid for sale (Giza 46) - Etsy
Meditation done inside a pyramid is thrice more powerful meditation done outside a pyramid, or underneath a pyramid. But any of these are called Pyramid Meditation. Many people experience feelings ranging from calm to extreme euphoria during their meditation sessions inside pyramids.

Could one sleep inside for better dreaming?
Pyramids provide the most effective high-energy environments for beginners. Pyramids help reduce the level of stress and tension in the physical body.

Most people who have experimented with Pyramid Meditation describe themselves as experiencing total bodily relaxation, followed by the shutting out of distracting external stimuli and irrelevant discursive thoughts. Finally, one achieves an altered state of consciousness that allows the practitioner to concentrate on deeper inner levels. More

18 acts aren't "sins" in Bible...or are they?

Jane Andrews, Critical Financial (via MSN.com, 2/6/24); author A. J. Jacobs; Seth Auberon, Sheldon S., Shauna Schwartz, Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

18 misunderstood acts the Bible says aren’t actually sins
Christians tend to assume that the Bible condemns a wide array of behaviors, but the reality is surprising.
I wanna know what it commands
Here, Critical Financial zooms in on 18 so-called “sins” that may not be as bad as we once thought. It's not clear what the point of this article is, maybe to just gather up more followers for the largest religion in the world (Catholicism/Christianity).

But making it easier is not the way to please most people who want to be better since so much of what we believe is cultural and temporal. (Many Catholic men are mad at "fake" Pope John Paul II for weakening the faith and watering everything down, like an anti-pope, while other Catholics celebrate him for opening up the Old Church and modernizing it).

We only get one chance a year to air our doubts.
Shouldn't the Bible be personal, literal, and timeless? Apparently not, not by a long shot. Let's look at a few examples and decide whether there's an impersonal (universal) law at play or just the Jew's tribal God's view at play.

1. Questioning Faith: Having doubts and asking questions are not signs of rebellion or weakness but can actually strengthen faith. Characters in the Bible like Thomas and Job (Joe'b) [as well as Adam and Eve] questioned God, which illustrates that doubt [and the pursuit of knowledge] is a human experience.

I want to wear pants like a man, morality police!
2. Dressing "Alternatively": Dressing in an eccentric or even way-out style is unconventional, but looking a little odd isn’t a sin the Bible ever mentions. [It does however mention dressing in drag, crossdressing, wearing the other gender's clothes in public (Deuteronomy 22:5 A woman must not wear men's clothing, and a man must not wear women's clothing, for whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD your God. (biblehub.com) -- a possible biblical death penalty offense. Oh yeah, the Bible commands us to kill lots of people, enemies, family members, children, sinners...]
  • My trans daughterson is going to love this one.
Deuteronomy 22 on how you can dress
: This verse prohibits cross-dressing (Hebrew lo yibash). Scholars, historical authorities, and leaders hold different opinions on correctly interpreting and implementing this commandment (Deut. 22:5). Some argue the act of cross-dressing is an abomination. Others maintain cross-dressing is only a manifestation of a different bad intention, such as deception, idolatry, or [gay sex work] [12].
I'm punk so, I dress how I want. F-you!
Go right ahead if you like looking like a [gay] Goth, wearing platform shoes as high as stilts [like the Glam bands of the 70s], or a hippie kaftan down to your toes [like a heathen, just don't do that Punk or Emo stuff or full body tattoos (Leviticus 19:28 You must not...put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD (biblehub.com), and spikes, and crazy hair, or revealing clothes that might tempt the weaker sex to rape you, or anything like that.

Bikini sluts of the 4th century Roman Empire
It's hypocrisy to act like the Bible is cool with people dressing alternatively. As A. J. Jacobs found out, the Book is very specific on how males and females are to dress. So veil that hair and face like the religion you laugh at for believing their sacred book].

Who wrote this MSN article? Critical Financial

We only charge as much interest as market bears
3. Charging Interest ("Usury"): While excessive interest rates are warned against by the Bible, the act of charging a "reasonable" amount of interest isn’t universally condemned by everyone. So that makes it okay, right? (Deuteronomy 23:19 Do not charge your brother interest on money, food, or any other type of loan (biblehub.com).

Everyone's doing it. I did it better, like Madoff.
I mean, bankers and tax collectors gotta eat. And now that it's "standard practice," who are we to question the financial system in which we participate? That's Caesar's business, right, Jesus?

Same with drinking alcohol or spirits, right? Moderation. Just get a little drunk, which the Buddha warned against, but Jesus and the Apostles probably partied on wine every night or when plotting against the imperial Romans who overran their society....

World's smartest person wrote a book (video)

Toby Hendy/Tibees, July 16, 2022; Pat Macpherson, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

World's smartest person wrote this one mysterious book
(TibeesThe Animate and the Inanimate (PDF from sidis.net) is an interesting book available as a physical book (amazon.com).

The Animate and... (sidis.net)
The child prodigy William James Sidis' father, Boris Sidis, together with the famous psychologist/philosopher William James, developed the idea that people only use 10% of their brains, a small fraction of their full mental potential.

William Sidis had a high IQ and chose to live a private and independent life (almost like a Buddhist ascetic), which some saw as a waste of his potential. This video aims to show that he continued to be a lifelong learner and thinker.

The Animate and the Inanimate is one book he wrote under his own name (as he authored others with pseudonyms). It tackles interesting ideas in physics and the reversibility of the second law of thermodynamics.

Who was the ascetic Siddhartha saw?

Geethanjali Kids (animation); Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly
There have always been nomadic hermits (sramanas) apart from conceited brahmanas.
.
Herman Hesse echoes the tale.
Any Westerner who learns about Buddhism usually learns it with the allegorical story of the Buddha's life, from Scythian prince to Awakene Oned. The location changed from Central Asia (Gandhara, Afghanistan, Shakya Land, called Kapilavastu).

When the prince, living a luxurious sheltered life with his white pony (Kanthaka), three seasonal capitals and palaces, his beautiful young bride (Bimba Devi or Yasodhara), excellent education, and many friends, relatives, and fellow Scythians the Sakas, saw the Four Signs, he knew it was time to leave on a spiritual quest for proto-India.
With each rebirth, many troubles follow.
The first three signs (aging, sickness, and death) shook him and made him lose interest in a life of distractions. If life was beset with such unsatisfactoriness, lack of fulfillment, and suffering, what was the point? What could he offer his people if he could not guide them to any escape from the inevitable?

But he saw a fourth sign (hermit, recluse, renunciate, wandering ascetic, monastic). The question arises, who in the heck was that guy? If the future Buddha, who would awaken seven years later and establish a monastic sangha or community of male and female wandering ascetics, had yet to create saffron robed monks, who was this person?

Scythian comb from Solokha, 4th century. Scythians were goldsmiths with numerous mines.
,
It's not a flaw in the story. It's an indication how far back the tradition of wandering asceticism or shramanas (shamans, who seek direct experience of the divine, knowledge and vision). Even in those times and in that place Brahmins (the high caste temple priests of the Vedic religion, Brahmanism, and later Hinduism) existed.

But here far in the northwest frontier of future-India, Brahmins were subordinated to nobles or warrior caste individuals like the Sakas, an exceedingly proud and haughty recently settled nomadic people from Sakastan in Scythia around modern Afghanistan (Bamiyan, Mes Aynak, and Kabul as likely the three seasonal capitals of what is collectively called Kapilavastu or Kapilavatthu, Kapil = Kabul. See ranajitpal.com).

So what was the ancient practice of spiritual nomads, the wandering ascetics that existed in the Scythia of the Sakas even before Prince Siddhartha (the future Buddha) was born?

Scythian religion
Who was this pre-Buddhism wandering ascetic (sramana) who inspired Siddhartha to seek the direct experience of Truth and set up an organization so that men and women could do the same and come to realization in this very life?

Scythian religion refers to the mythology, ritual practices, and beliefs of the Scythian cultures, a collection of closely related ancient Iranian (Aryan) peoples.

They inhabited Central Asia and the Pontic–Caspian steppe in Eastern Europe throughout Classical Antiquity, spoke the Scythian language (itself a member of the Eastern Iranian language family), and which included:
  • the Alans,
  • the Scythians proper,
  • the Sarmatians,
  • the Sindi,
  • the Massagetae, and
  • the SAKA (the Buddha's Sakas, Shakyas, Indo-Scythians, Indo-Sakas, speakers of Pali).
What little is known of the religion is drawn from the work of the 5th century Greek historian and ethnographer Herodotus. Scythian religion is assumed to have been related to the earlier Proto-Indo-Iranian religion, and to have influenced later Slavic, Hungarian, and Turkic mythologies, as well as some contemporary Eastern Iranian and Ossetian traditions.
