War and guns are fun! (In the Playroom/Johnathan Hobin/canadianartjunkie.com) |

Democracy Now! returns to Chicago, site of the largest NATO
summit in the organization’s six-decade history. There, nearly 50
American veterans discarded their war medals by hurling them onto the street in
the direction of the NATO summit. Hear the
soldiers in their own voices as they reject killing and war, being lied to by our government, and suffering (from PTSD, Gulf War Syndrome, toxic shock, vaccine side effects, increased suicidality, and other ailments) in silence without help from the Pentagon that sent them to kill for empire.
They go on stage and throw their medals away one by one.
"I’m here to return my Global War on Terror Service Medal in solidarity
with the people of Iraq and the people of Afghanistan," states Jason Hurd,
a former combat medic who spent 10 years in the U.S. Army. "I am deeply
sorry for the destruction that we have caused in those countries and
around the globe." Scott Kimball, a War on Iraq veteran, adds: "For all
the servicemembers and veterans who are against these wars, you are not
alone!" Click to see the other parts of the 2013 Memorial Day
