Los Angeles tells city to 'Ride the D'

I love riding the D! Just look at me.
It's a moral outrage. Who is running the marketing department for the City of LA? "Ride the D, Ride the D," it's everywhere. There's a double entendre in there, as if they aim to drain the main vein or choke a lizard. The "D" is the new D Line, of course, but some school-age kids might think it refers to a real Richard Johnson.

The Metro is the new partially underground way of getting around the west coast megalopolis, Earthquake Town. As we continue to await "The Big One," which we have been waiting for for the past 30 years since the last time they re-announced it's another 30 years, but it's coming. It's coming. And there's no need to ever ask after every temblor, "Is this the Big One?" Why?

It's because when it's the Big One, you'll it's the Big One, because you won't have to ask, "Is this the Big One." Your certainty will obviate the question. Lately, Netflix is a Joke has taken over every venue in the city, even far off post-fire Altadena, at the Eagle Lodge on Woodbury.

Section 1 of the D Line Extension is a historic moment bringing rail transit for the first time to a part of Los Angeles' Miracle Mile on Wilshire Blvd. Commemorate this LA transit milestone with a comfy and stylish "Ride the D" dad hat to look like a real D Head! A classic dad hat never goes out of style—made of 100% organic cotton.

LA wants us to "ride the D"?
Who knew mass marketing worked so well?
Last week the Los Angeles Metro announced three long awaited subway stations on the D Line. The video has over 1M views across platforms. An hour after posting, the team quickly followed up with merch to celebrate, a shirt that simply reads “Ride the D.”

They did a full year’s worth of sales in under 24 hours. The design made it onto Late Night with Seth Meyers. They couldn’t have predicted one piece of merch could become this big of a moment.

We can't hardly wait for hardy May Eight!
When working in social, one is often asked to see the future. What format will break through? How can we get this to go viral? The truth is, even the best social teams surprise themselves.

Jane Ashley, who leads the social media strategy at LA Metro, told me: “We didn't anticipate that the announcement post would be completely eclipsed by something we barely officially promoted.” That’s the fun of working in this industry:

Mail-order brides of Colonial America

Mathew Cohen, historicalgenius.com, 2/22; Ashley Wells, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The peculiar origins of the first "brides" in Colonial America
Ukrainian gals on sale: Pay us to marry you!
Most have probably heard of "mail-order brides." But that kind of thing has been happening in the USA since before mail, mail order, the dawn of the internet — even before there was a US Postal Service. No one tell Kevin Costner.

What if people knew this bizarre industry dates back hundreds of years? Yes, really, centuries. Mail-order brides were essential to the foundation of the United States of America.

It was all to do with who moved to North America in the first place. After an expedition spearheaded by the Virginia Company of London, English settlers founded "James Fort" — later known as Jamestown.

While it eventually became famous as the first permanent English settlement in the USA, Jamestown was originally renowned for another curious reason.

Finding their feet

I'm ready to do it for the family, Mom.
Life wasn't easy there. Starvation and disease wracked the population of Jamestown and left the settlers having to adapt by expanding their agricultural activities:

They diversified into tobacco crops, for instance, which made some folks wealthy. Despite this, not everyone was happy. Although there was the case of successful tobacco pioneer John Rolfe marrying the famed and beautiful Native American Princess Pocahontas, most white men were single.

The grave male-female imbalance
By 1619, almost all of the inhabitants of Jamestown were male and alone. Most settlers were unable to find wives.

Yet, while this inability to find love, companionship, and marriage was indeed a legitimate concern, there was an even larger issue at play:

Without females who could conceive children, Jamestown would not last beyond a single generation.

An unattractive pitch
Why was the gender imbalance in Jamestown so enormous? Many females were reluctant to leave behind their comfortable lives in Europe for a future of uncertainty in North America.

And when reports of famine, starvation, and disease reached England, any open-mindedness girls and women may have had was likely quashed. From then on, Jamestown continued to deteriorate.  More

Monastery or Marriage? (Buddhist film)

The bait: a dreamy spouse

(Poppoli) A Western Buddhist monk (Scandinavian ordained in the Thai Theravada tradition) gets married and becomes a monk again. "Act Normal" is a 1996 film by Olaf de Fleur, which he worked on for over ten years. Part II, Part III

"Berketex Bride"
(Crass from the album Penis Envy)
Berketex bribe. Oh! Berketex bride.
The object unsoiled is packed ready and waiting
For the moment of truth in this spiritual mating.
The object unsoiled is packed ready and waiting,
To be owned, to be cherished, to be [loved] for the naming.

The public are shocked by the state of society,
But as for you, you're a breath of purity.
Well don't give me your morals; they're filth in my eyes!
You can pack them away with the rest of your lies.
Your painted mask of ugly perfection,
The ring on your finger, the sign of protection,
Is the rape on "age 3, is the soldier's obsession.
How well you've been caught to support your oppression:
One god. One church. One husband. One wife.

Sordid sequences in brilliant life,
Supports and props and punctuation
To our flowing realities and realizations.
We're talking with words that have been used before
To describe us as goddesses, mothers, and whores,
To describe us as women, describe us as men,
To set out the rules of this ludicrous game,
And it's played very carefully, a delicate balance,
A masculine/feminine perfect alliance.

Does the winner take all? What love in your grasping?
What vision is left and is anyone asking?
She's a Berketex bribe... Bride. Bribe...

Shortage of singles drives men to commit

Stephanie Pappas (LiveScience.com)
Wedding bells ring sooner for women in places where single ladies are scarce, according to a new study of metropolitan areas in America. Where single women are rare, women marry earlier, researchers reported Aug. 4 in the journal Evolutionary Psychology.

The shift may be because the ladies have more men to choose from, while the men have extra motivation to put a ring on it. "Women are basically getting snapped up, because the guys want to get her before somebody else does," study author Daniel Kruger, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan, told LiveScience.

Attack of the single woman
Kruger first became interested in studying the effects of gender imbalance on the marriage market when he caught a glimpse of a magazine cover on a trip to New York City. "It had this cover picture on it that said, ’Attack of the Single Woman,’ and it had this giant woman with a big red dress like Godzilla tromping through the city," Kruger recalled. More>>

Why women marry the wrong man

Coldfeetpress.com/blog

I called off my first wedding. In the months following the breakup, I was astounded by the number of women (and a few men) who confided in me that they wished they had the courage to call off their own first weddings.

They all stated, in one way or another, that “I knew I was making a mistake as I was walking down the aisle.” I realized that maybe this was one of the reasons the divorce rate was so high — many marriages are doomed from the start because the bride and/or the groom already know it’s a mistake. And they get married anyway!

I wondered why smart men and women would choose walk down the aisle into a marriage they already felt would be a mistake. I also wanted to figure out why I came so close to marrying the wrong guy myself. Even though my fiancé was a very nice man, he was not the right man for me. Deep down, I had known that from the very beginning of the relationship. Why did a smart and capable woman get engaged to the wrong guy? I knew if I talked to enough women, I would uncover a pattern.

Q: So, what are the red flags that indicate someone is “marrying the wrong guy?”

Anne Milford (co-author with therapist Jennifer Gauvain of How Not To Marry the Wrong Guy: A Guide For Avoiding the Biggest Mistake of Your Life): Red flags in relationships are problematic actions, attitudes, and behaviors exhibited by your partner. But red flags aren’t always so obvious — they aren’t just “bad” behaviors, such as dishonesty or infidelity.

Vastly differing beliefs or likes and dislikes (religion, jobs, parenting style, etc.) are another kind of red flag. Whatever kind it is, a red flag should make you stop and think. These warning signs offer clues about your boyfriend’s character. Ignore them at your own peril. More>>

Q. Why do women marry the wrong guy?

Milford and Gauvain: After talking to hundreds of women who married the wrong guy, we uncovered the three most common reasons why they walked down the aisle:

  1. They got caught up in the momentum...
  2. Feelings of fear, shame, and embarrassment about publicly admitting that getting married was a mistake.
  3. Financial concerns...

Marrying the wrong guy starts with dating the wrong guy! Why do women of all ages settle in their relationships? We discovered five reasons why women date the wrong guy:

  1. Loneliness and insecurity
  2. Believing the relationship is the solution to their problems
  3. External pressures to get married
  4. Thinking that “he will fix me” or “I will fix him”
  5. Ignoring red flags and gut feelings: "f I don’t date/marry this person, I will never find anyone else!"

The Science of Sex: Why Older Women Lust
Buss, Easton, and their colleagues found that women in their 30s and early 40s are significantly more sexual than younger women. Women ages 27 through 45 report not only having more sexual fantasies (and more intense sexual fantasies) than women ages 18 through 26; the older women also report having more sex, period. And they are more willing than younger women to have casual sex, even one-night stands. In other words, despite the girls-gone-wild image of promiscuous college women, it is women in their middle years who are America's most sexually industrious.

Dating Service: Older women, younger men
The New York Times looks at the supposed explosion of cougardom among any dating service, dating websites, and any dating agency: Newsweek, taking stock of the explosion of on-screen romances between older women and younger men, declared 2009 “the year of the cougar,” but then concluded in the June article that “by this time next year, the cougar will be extinct.” Maybe so — if you’re talking about television or the box office. But behind the unleashing of cougars in pop culture is what a growing number of sociologists say is a real demographic shift...
