Dr. Gabor Mate to speak in LA (KPFK benefit)

UprisingRadio.org (Pacifica), Wisdom Quarterly

In the first of Uprising's Speaker Series, world famous Dr. Gabor Mate comes to Los Angeles for an all new talk on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 7:00-9:00 pm at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 3300 Wilshire Blvd.

Addicts in recovery -- are cycling through the "Realm of Hungry Ghosts" (the Peta Loka in Buddhist cosmology) -- could find themselves racing against the clock to beat their addiction in Maine before health insurance coverage for their treatment ends.

Treatment? Doctors say, "Let's give heroin addicts heroin" (madmikesamerica.com).

The Maine Morning Sentinel reported [on Oct. 15, 2011] that state officials for Medicaid and MaineCare programs have proposed capping prescription drug and counseling services at two years.

The move would save money but hit the state during an epidemic of addiction to painkillers. A Sentinel editorial opposing the cuts to treatment programs predicted the result “would be a self-defeating exercise that could end up costing much more than the short term budget savings.”

Drug use remains controversial in the US. Addicts are stigmatized and often considered unworthy of help.

Portion of scroll (thangka) depicting the plane of hungry ghosts (pretas) who suffer from intense craving with no store of profitable karma to alleviate their craving. A store of merit is a tremendous blessing human and superhuman beings often take for granted.

However, there is a growing movement for compassionate models of addiction treatment. The approach has a strong advocate in physician and bestselling author Dr. Gabor Mate.

Doctor Mate, What is the "Realm of Hungry Ghosts"?

After a career including 20 years as a family doctor, Dr. Gabor Mate spent 12 years as a physician in Vancouver Canada’s downtown Eastside, notorious for its highly addicted population of indigent and transient residents. His experience with this complex population is chronicled in his bestselling In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction.

Dr. Mate makes a convincing case that without abandoning medical treatment, the social and interpersonal basis of disease from addiction to attention deficit disorders must be examined and understood to effectively treat and prevent them.

Dr. Mate’s medical expertise combined with a rare kindness, humor, and intellect have made his books bestsellers. He is now a much sought after speaker on health. A, and he is coming to Los Angeles to give a talk tailored for the KPFK audience.

Dr. Gabor Mate is the bestselling author of four books, including When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress Disease Connection. Based in Canada, Dr. Maté ran a popular family practice in East Vancouver for two decades. For seven years he also served as Medical Coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital, caring for the terminally ill. More recently he worked for twelve years in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside neighborhood with patients suffering from hardcore drug addiction, mental illness and HIV. In 2009 Dr. Maté received an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Simon Fraser University, and has recently been appointed Adjunct Professor in SFU’s School of Criminology. In 2011 he will receive an Honorary Degree from the University of Northern British Columbia.

Watching Auschwitz on TikTok: Israel

Dr. Gabor Mate: ‘It’s like we’re watching Auschwitz on TikTok’
(Middle East Eye) Oct. 16, 2024: Our beloved Jewish Buddhist Dr. Mate (Zeitgeist star and father of journalist Aaron Mate) has this to say about Israel's genocide of Palestinians, PM Bibi Netanyahu's apartheid state, and Zionist Jews:

“Had there been YouTube and Instagram and TikTok around [Concentration Camp] Auschwitz, this is what we would have seen, people burning alive. And it’s beyond horrendous, it’s beyond comprehension.”

In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts
In an online meeting with French activist and film producer Frank Barat on Monday, Canadian physician Dr. Gabor Mate, MD, explored the psychological complexities of witnessing atrocities in Gaza and Palestine, saying:

“It’s like we’re watching Auschwitz on TikTok.” They delve into the emotional and historical roots of violence and state-sponsored oppression and terrorism by the New Israel (European/Ashkenazi Jews), highlighting the trauma, guilt, and helplessness experienced by observers.
Dr. Mate stresses the need to acknowledge these emotions and examines the normalization of violence, while contemplating the future implications for Gaza and global society.

The Wisdom of Trauma: Dr. Gabor Mate (film)

Dr. Gabor Mate, Stephanie Lee (drgabormate.com/blog); Seth Auberon (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

There's a way back from addiction.
Back in April of 2021, addiction medicine specialist Dr. Gabor Mate, M.D., announced the release of the documentary The Wisdom of Trauma.

It had been four years in the making by directors and producers Maurizio and Zaya Benazzo from Science and Nonduality (SAND). The film was rebroadcast in the summer of 2021, accompanied by conversations.

Synopsis
The Wisdom of Trauma
One in five Americans are diagnosed with mental illness in any given year. Suicide is the second most common cause of death in the US for youth aged 15-24. It kills over 800,000 people a year globally and 48,300 in the US.

Drug overdoses kill 81,000 in the US annually. An autoimmunity epidemic affects 24 million people in the US.

So the filmmakers ask the question, “What's going on?”

The Realm of Hungry Ghosts?
The interconnected epidemics of [stress and poor coping mechanisms,] anxiety, chronic illness, and substance abuse are, according to Dr. Maté, normal but not in the way we might think.

In The Wisdom of Trauma, we travel alongside physician, bestselling author, and Order of Canada recipient Dr. Maté to explore why Western society is facing such epidemics.

This is a journey with a man who has dedicated his life to understanding the connection between illness, addiction, [childhood] trauma, and society.

Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love, and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds.
Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policymakers, and legal personnel are not concerned with "fixing" behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms, and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human psyche.

He points us to the path of individual and collective healing. More

How to stop: REAL cause of addictions

They stand at the periphery waiting, clinging. They passed away with strong attachments.

The REAL reason behind addictions and how to get over them
I don't know how it began. I was molested.
(Asangoham) April 26, 2024: Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism includes within its teachings a very interesting concept, that of the "hungry ghost," known as yidags in Tibetan [preta in Sanskrit, peta in Pali].

Dr. Gabor Mate used this idea in his research
One possible form of hungry ghost can be a person who has died while still in the midst of intense craving, attachment, or an insatiable addiction.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that at death one sheds only the physical or gross form; the subtle and causal forms of the body remain [in a changing state of flux, just as they changed and were in flux during life].

This means that while one is now [temporarily] free of the gross or physical body, one is still in the grip of the subtle body, or mind, that was “made” during that and previous lifetimes.

The causal body will retain the seed of the addiction and carry it into the next life if it is not purified. Thus, those who die in the grip of addiction or craving or attachment often remain in the physical plane as disembodied hungry ghosts.
The Wisdom of Trauma
  • [Dr. Gabor Mate, Canadian addiction medical specialist and star of Zeitgeist, contends that there are NO addictive substances or activities. Many people are indeed addicted and unable to stop; there is no doubt about that. Dr. Mate treats them daily and set up Canada's first compassionate care center to help them. But it turns out the real problem is an interaction of factors. IF substances and activities were "addictive," then everyone who partook would become addicted. This does not happen. Q: What then is the underlying cause?
    When the Body Says No
  • A: Susceptibility brought on by childhood trauma. If a person who was abused takes a nonaddictive substance like alcohol, meth, fentanyl, MSG, sugar, heroin, crack, cocaine, or marijuana (which flood the brain with feelgood dopamine, endorphins, and neurotransmitters) then addiction quickly sets in. But it cannot be substance. It is that substance in that person. So as a society we abuse our children then condemn them for the easy-to-access coping mechanism they resort to to self-soothe. It's a double-bind, a Catch 22, a fully Belgium (HHGTTG) situation. Ghosts get trapped this way, and then they are trapped (in bondage), and then for a long time lost "in the realm of hungry ghosts" (Buddhism's peta loka). Knowing this, seeing this, one adheres to the Five Precepts, for one who preserves the Five Precepts is preserved by the Five Precepts. Otherwise, after the ghost realm, which is the beginning of the downfall (niraya), the great waste, one continues down to the hells, where there is no apparent way out. Good karma now will help a great deal then. So make merit (punya).]
Is Dr. Gabor Mate a secular Jewish Buddhist or a Buddhist Jew? (drgabormate.com)
.
I want what I want when I want it. I'm hungry.
That is, such beings are still gripped by insatiable addiction but now without the physical body that would give them any chance of satiating that addiction.

Those with the ability to perceive disembodied spirits can perceive hungry ghosts. These people claim that in those places such as the “red light” districts of many cities where people gather to drink, have sex (engage in prostitution), or use intoxicants -- three of the most common pursuits of human addiction -- hungry ghosts can be seen to congregate, often in great numbers.

Addiction is complex. It transcends mere substance or behavioral abuse. Addiction is defined as a chronic and relapsing disorder.

It is characterized by compulsive seeking, continued use, and a lack of control. This continues in the face of and despite severe adverse consequences.

The brain is dependent on neurochemicals.
Fundamentally, addiction involves changes in the brain's reward system. Repeated exposure to addictive substances or behaviors leads to neuroadaptations.

This adaptation diminishes the brain's sensitivity to natural rewards (such as dopamine) and compels/drives one in the compulsive pursuit of the addictive stimulus.

In the digital age, behavioral addictions related to technology and social media have also begun to take hold. #addictions #hungryghosts #zen

According to the New York Times (via Off The Record) the number of high school students smoking marijuana on a daily basis is at a 30-year high. Meanwhile, the number of students drinking, smoking cigarettes, or snorting cocaine is on the decrease! Progress?

The study, conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that about 25% of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders (what, no 11th graders?) are smoking cannabis, up from 21% four years ago.

(Arkiharha Saara/weekday-illusion)
Drinking alcohol has fallen by almost half among 8th graders and is steadily dropping in other demographics as well.

Doctors and officials blame the rise on medical marijuana and synthetic (toxic) marijuana-substitutes like Spice and K2.

“We’re clearly seeing an increase in teenage marijuana use that corresponds pretty clearly in time with the increase in medical marijuana use,” said Dr. Christian Thurstone, medical director of the adolescent substance abuse treatment program at Denver Health and Hospital Authority, who was not involved in the study.

"Drugs Aren’t the Problem"

Addiction specialist Dr. Gabor Mate as featured in Part 1 of "Zeitgeist: Moving Forward"

Trauma sets us up for addiction, sex, shopping...
Addiction specialist Dr. Gabor Mate, M.D. makes the outrageous claim that there are NO addictive drugs. This is shocking, but it is true, and the proof is easy: If drugs themselves were addictive, everyone who used them would become addicted. But most users do not become addicts. Why do some? It is because some have been set up for addiction by early childhood stress and trauma. Such users, and there are a great many of them, are very susceptible to becoming addicted to self-soothing substances and behaviors. Addiction is not in the drugs. It is not in our genes. It is not in the trauma. It is in the interaction of exposure to early trauma AND exposure to drugs.
  • An "interaction" is the phenomenon of, for example, not being harmed by nitro, and not being harmed by glycerin, but being blown up by nitroglycerin. Or take salt; it is composed of two caustic substances that become harmless together.
Societies traumatize children, expose and tacitly encourage young adults to try drugs, then jails (further traumatize) them for liking drugs as if punishment could ever cure the craving for being soothed. It is a vicious circle. Sadly, most drug abusers do not become intoxicated to "expand" their minds and enhance consciousness or explore dimensions, alternate realities, or go more deeply into this reality. No, most of us abuse drugs to obliterate consciousness, to go numb, to go unconscious. We are then susceptible to a great deal of further harm, like violating other precepts and suffering the many consequences of that bad karma. And our physical and mental health suffers. And our social life, which was helped at first, suffers. And our circles suffer. And society suffers. But FTW, we say. Party!

They are a symptom

Columbia University neuroscientist Carl Hart on brain science and myths about addiction

Neo-hippies high on drugs (dudespaper.com)
There is a nationwide shift toward "liberalizing" drug laws. Neuropsychopharmacologist Dr. Carl Hart -- the first tenured African-American professor in the sciences at Columbia University -- is an associate professor in the Psychology and Psychiatry Departments. He is also a member of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse and a research scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

(highpricethebook.com)
However, long before he entered the hallowed halls of the Ivy League, Dr. Hart gained firsthand knowledge about drug usage while growing up in one of Miami’s toughest neighborhoods. He recently wrote a memoir titled High Price: A Neuroscientist’s Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society. 2014 is the best lineup ever!
Why pay $375.00 for GA to get in when you can pay $799.00 for VIP passes? Sorry, too late, it's sold out! Then there's the driving and fuel charges, parking and camping, shuttle passes ($60), food and water, and the illegal drugs won't be buying themselves. This is the "Woodstock" of our generation -- except for the MTV concert and all the policing, radio chipped wristbands, NSA spying, and herding people onto a giant lawn with an in loco parentis curfew.

Here's a "deal," ravers: one tee pee (as seen above) and two GA passes only $2,200 or for just an additional $900, make that VIP. Think of what "rebel rebels" you'll be! See more about prices, heatstroke risks, overdosing, dehydration, and other troubles concertgoers can expect to encounter at coachella.com. Remember to shower before day two of the weekend, and "no sex please. We're Ameboids and Gatchularians." - HHGTTG

The most important thing is this, as when visiting Disneyland, BRING MONEY! That junk food and those glow sticks aren't going to buy themselves. And just on the off chance, for sensibilities' sakes, bring condoms. Never know, this could be the year. See, if you forget to pack a parachute, don't jump.

What's the moral to our story? Avoid drugs. But if you don't avoid drugs, make sure to have had avoided early childhood traumas like stressed parenting, abandonment, sexual molestation, physical abuse, economic hardship, emotional abuse, incest, codependence, bullying, and so on.
