Jackie and Shadow returned to "the birds and the bees," making love, making a nest, and making more eggs to produce the miracle of more garudas (avian eagle beings also called suparnas).
Looking at the newly fortified nest after last year's marathon viewing show, one of the eggs was confirmed to have cracked on Friday (Friends of Big Bear Valley/YouTube).

TOPLINE:Big Bear’s famous bald eagle nest has taken a bad turn — both of Jackie and Shadow’s eggs have been attacked by ravens (ravenous crows).
WHAT HAPPENED? Via livestream, a raven could be seen in the nest poking a large hole into, and potentially devour, one of the beings inside one of the eagle eggs as if it were a raw omelet, sunny side over and done.
WHY DOES IT MATTER? Jackie and Shadow have a large fanbase.
“Our hearts are with Jackie and Shadow always, and we wrap our arms around them,” Jenny Voisard, the organization’s media and website manager, wrote in a Facebook update.
“Our hearts are also with YOU, Eagle Fam; we know how you are feeling now."
Jackie and Shadow, perhaps sensing their eggs were not viable (maybe due to human DDT), flew away for a long time, too long. Ravens came in and ate the carrion (formerly living animals); there may have been no bird murder, just bird cannibalism.

(KCAL News) May 9, 2025: Nicole Comstock reports from Big Bear, where wildlife enthusiasts say that the bald eaglets are getting ready to spread their wings and fly from the nest for the first time.
One of the hatchlings (chicks, babies, fledglings, carnivorous raptors) is missing in the snow. The storms pounding Los Angeles with hail, graupel, and freezing rain is dumping snow high atop Big Bear Lake. And at least 50 feet above that sits Eagle Jackie and her mate Shadow, the couple pampering their newborns with slaughtered trout, crow, duck, and warm vomit. Ah, Nature.

But tragedy has struck. Not only was the runt late and being constantly bonked by Brutus, the big one, to establish the nest's pecking order, now one of the three is feared gone, either cannibalized or thrown from the nest for hygiene among the corpses and mortal remains of the prey littering the well-arranged sticks.
Seven thousand feathers keep Jackie warm, sitting on her brood or clutch or nursery. Maybe a park ranger should climb the tree and shove the mother off her young so we can count them and feel better about our nosy curiosity about the mysterious ways of Nature and its blood smeared beaks and talons. Is it any wonder the dragons(nagas,reptilians) fear the garudas (suparnas,avians)
There's been progress. A pip has been detected, a quickening that inspires the other chicks in their embryonic shells to get with the pecking and break out. Although it is 18 degrees up at Big Bear Lake above LA, the eggs are warm by the vigilance of the parents, Jackie and Shadow, and everything looks good for the birth of three baby bald eagles. It makes one proud to be a Native American and watch respect for nature rub off on the cam jamming Lone Ranger man filming the birds in their element.
[Shoot them, kill the eagles before they harm the trout in the lake where human fishermen want to kill, cut, and eat them!!! It's nearing Lent when Americans pay for more fish to be killed for our insatiable hunger for blood and flesh, like ghouls or something. Terrestrial human hunters over amoral avian eagles! Or might Nature have its own ideas about balance, ecosystems, and lifecycles? *Irony*]
We are starting Pip Watch on March 1st, when Egg1 is 38 days old, looking for the first signs of hatching (the first little hole being called a pip).
We may notice subtle changes in Jackie and Shadow’s behavior, such as becoming more attentive to the eggs.
Since Jackie is practicing delayed incubation, we may not see anything yet but will keep our eyes glued to all three eggs, [except for the runt. Who cares about him? Have you seen the price of a dozen of these? Make my murder morning mash of fowl fetuses too expensive to fry!]
The initial pip usually looks like a small bump, often shaped like a star, and is only visible when the camera is zoomed in. The eggs may have some dirt smudges or fluff stuck on them, which are not to be mistaken for pips.

inland Southern California over the weekend.
Last week a bald eagle [named Lucy, who is mating with Ricky] near Big Bear Lake laid two eggs, just in time for the public January bald eagle count Saturday, Jan. 13th.
The eagle and her mate are year-round residents of the area. The eggs should hatch after about 35 days, around Feb. 10, 2018.

“This is part of the story of bald eagle population recovery nationwide,” said Robin Eliason, a U.S. Forest Service biologist.
“We think these are the first eggs laid by this young female. We do not know for sure because she’s not banded, but some of us are convinced that the female is the first bald eagle recorded to be hatched in the San Bernardino Mountains [east of Los Angeles], which was in 2012.”
Because bald eagles will abandon nests if disturbed, the Forest Service has closed the area to all public entry through June 22, the duration of the nesting season. “We’re very concerned about people trying to get close for photographs, viewing, etcetera,” Eliason said.
Better viewing can be found from the comfort of one’s home, anyway. The nonprofit group Friends of the Big Bear Valley installed a livestream camera on the nest in 2016, which is still active.

In 2014, a pair of mated bald eagles chose the most idyllic of nest sites within the United States’ capital (Washington, D.C.), nestled high in a tulip poplar tree among the azalea collection at the national arboretum, which is operated by the United States Department of Agriculture.
