How to save a hummingbird (sutra)

SUTRA: The compassion of past buddhas (DN 1)
The wondrous kalaviṅka bird
...“When he was reborn, [the being-bent-on-supreme-enlightenment] the Bodhisattva’s voice was clear, gentle, and harmonious like the voice of a kalaviṅka bird.”

The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“He was like the bird of the Himalayas
That drinks flower nectar and sings.
The most exalted of bipeds [the Buddha]
Had a voice that was just as clear.

“When he was reborn, the Bodhisattva’s vision could see clearly as far away as a yojana.”

The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“As a result of practicing pure deeds [good karma],
He got the marvelous glow of a god [deva].
The Bodhisattva’s eyes could see
At a range of a one yojana.

“When he was reborn, the Bodhisattva grew up to adulthood and was educated in the way [of governing] in the royal hall. His favor reached the common people, and his reputation for virtue was heard [about] far away.”

The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“In the royal hall, that young man
Educated the world with the way.
He made a variety of decisions,
So he was called Vipaśyin.

His pure knowledge was vast
And deep like the ocean.
He delighted the mass of beings
And improved their wisdom.

Gandhara=Scythia=Saka Land
“At that point, the Bodhisattva wanted to go out sight-seeing, so he ordered his driver to prepare a chariot and horses to go tour a forest park. Once the chariot and horses were ready, the driver returned and said, ‘Now is a good time.’ The prince then rode in the precious chariot to the scenic park. While they were on the road, they saw an elderly man. His hair was white, his teeth had fallen out, and his wrinkled body was bent. He walked wearily with a cane and was short of breath.

“The prince asked his aide, ‘What sort of man is that?’

“He answered, ‘This is an old man.’

“The prince also asked, ‘What is “old”?’

“He answered, ‘Old age happens as the end of one’s life approaches. When there aren’t many years left, it’s called being old.’

“The prince asked, ‘Will I be likewise? Will I not escape this hardship [inherent defect in rebirth]?’

“He answered, ‘Yes, anyone born is sure to become old. It doesn’t matter if they are rich or poor.’

“The prince was disturbed and unhappy at that point. He told his driver to turn the chariot around and go back to the palace. He silently thought to himself, ‘To think I’ll also have to suffer being old!’”

The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“Seeing an old man, his life about to end,
Walking weakly with a cane,
The Bodhisattva thought to himself,
‘I’ve yet to escape from this hardship!’...

The Great Legend
Long Discourses of the Buddha (DN 1) Introduction
.
The Buddha Sakyamuni was not the only one
Thus have I heard: One time, the Buddha was at the Flowering Grove Hut in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī [Savatthi]. He was accompanied by a large assembly of 1,250 monastics.

It was then that the monastics gathered in the Flowering Grove Hall after gathering alms. They engaged in a discussion with each other: “Venerables, the unsurpassed sage is so extraordinary! His miraculous powers are far-reaching, and his authority is tremendous. He has come to know the countless buddhas [supremely enlightened beings] of the past who have entered nirvāṇa, broken the bonds [of death], and eliminated idle speculation.”

“He also knows how many aeons [kalpas] ago those buddhas lived as well as their names, surnames, the clans to which they were reborn, the meals they had, the length of their lives, and what disappointment and happiness they experienced.”

“He also knows that those buddhas possessed such precepts, such principles, such wisdom, such liberation, and such abodes.”

“What do you think, friends? Does the Tathāgata [the Wayfarer, the Thus Come One, the Well Gone One, the Buddha] know this by discerning well the nature of things, or does he know these things because the gods (devas) come and tell him about them?”

The Bhagavān [the Blessed One, the Buddha] was in a quiet place at the time and clearly overheard the monastics having that discussion with his divine ear. He rose from his [meditation] seat, went to the Flowering Grove Hall, prepared a seat, and sat down.

He knew the answer, but the Bhagavān still asked them, “Monastics, what have you been discussing after gathering here?” The monastics then related to him what it had been.

The Bhagavān told them, “Good, good! With correct faith [saddha, confidence, conviction], you’ve left home to cultivate the path [to enlightenment and liberation], and you practice as you should. All of you have two types of conduct. The first is noble discussion of the Teaching, and the second is noble silence.

“This discussion of yours is as it should be: ‘The Tathāgata’s miraculous powers [are far-reaching,] and his authority are tremendous. He fully knows the events of countless aeons in the past. He knows it because he understands well the nature of things and because the gods come and tell him.’”

The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“Monastics gathered in the Dharma Hall
And held a noble discussion;
In a quiet place, the Tathāgata
Heard it all with his divine ear.

The Buddha sun’s light shines everywhere
As he discerns the Dharma realm’s meaning.
He also knows the past events of
The Completely Awakened and their nirvāṇa.

Their names, surnames, and families,
The births they received, I know, too.
The places where they had lived,
I recall them with clear vision.

Those gods of great authority,
Quite dignified in appearance,
Also come and tell me about
The Completely Awakened and their nirvāṇa.

Recounting their rebirths, names, and surnames,
Their kalaviṅka bird voices fully knew them.
To the Unsurpassed Sage of Gods and Humans,
They describe the buddhas of the past.”

Avians (Suparnas, Garudas) are diverse

The Seven Buddhas
He again asked the monastics, “Would you like to hear about the circumstances of past buddhas that the Tathāgata knows with the knowledge of past lives? I’ll tell you about them.”

The monastics said: “Bhagavān, now would be a good time for it.” “We’d be glad to hear it.” “Excellent, Bhagavān!” “If there’s time for a discourse (sutra), we’ll approve of it.”

The Buddha told the monastics, “Listen closely! Listen closely, and consider it well. I’ll discern and explain.” The monastics then accepted the teaching and listened.

The Buddha told the monastics, “Ninety-one aeons ago, there was a buddha named Vipaśyin who was the Tathāgata, the Arhat [fully enlightened], who arose in the world. Furthermore, monastics, thirty-one aeons ago, there was a buddha named Śikhin who was the Tathāgata, the Arhat, who arose in the world. Furthermore, monastics, thirty-one aeons ago, there was another buddha named Viśvabhū who was the Tathāgata, the Arhat, who arose in the world. Furthermore, monastics, during this present fortunate aeon, there was a buddha named Krakucchanda, another who was named Kanakamuni, and another who was named Kāśyapa. [It is called a "fortunate aeon" for having four buddhas.] Now, I’ve also achieved the supreme and complete awakening during this present aeon of fortune.”

The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“Ninety-one aeons in the past,
There was the Buddha Vipaśyin.
Next, thirty-one aeons ago,
There was the Buddha Śikhin.
During that same aeon,
Tathāgata Viśvabhū arose.

During the present fortunate aeon,
There have been countless millions of years.
There were four great sages
Who arose because of their pity for beings:
Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni,
Kāśyapa, and Śākyamuni. More

Fledgling bald eagles finally fly (video)

BIG BEAR LAKE, Southern California - When, O, when will our birds fly above the foothills, above the City of Lights that is Los Angeles? Jackie and Shadow have gone through so much already, losing baby Brutus, selling off the naming rights to the others. It's time to take to the air and become fledglings.

How I learned to fly (video)

My most brutal wingsuit flight ever | Täschhorn (4491 meters)
(Swiss JoHannes | Wingsuit) After years of dreaming, we finally did the highest possible wingsuit base jump in the Alps, from the top of Täschhorn, Switzerland.

Big hug to Mario for joining me on this mission. I couldn't have done it without him. Thanks, Bro! In total, we climbed for about 9 hours and spent one night at the Mischabeljoch bivouac. It was challenging leaving nothing behind and flying down with all of our equipment.

On the top we have to scramble five pitches to the exit point, belayed gear up. I jumped around 10:30 am during perfect conditions, without thermals (rising heat columns).

But after 40 seconds of flying, my arms were really tired, so I couldn't hold the glide and had to fly more steeply. Unfortunately, it is not getting much better. It is becoming a serious problem as I can hardly feel my fingers holding on.

Now if I could just learn to "fly" on land

Antonia was waiting at the LZ with a cold one. Mario and I landed safely. I don't know what happened to my weak arms... Was it the altitude or the heavy bag? I was exhausted AF and glad we got down safely. What a mission, what a mountain! Source

Crop Top Duo say Spirit Airlines is sexist

When Trump 'n Vance win and Project 2025 is implemented, will women have more or fewer rights?
Tara and Teri, the Crop Top Duo, threatened that they better get off for dressing like hot sl*ts.
.
See? We said being hot is hard! It never ends. Stop staring at our crops if you don't like it and leave us be on this hot no A/C preflight seating circus!

This how we handle in Russia: topless (Femen)
Two female American passengers claim they were kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops, accusing a[n effeminate] male flight attendant of sexism.

The passengers [neither of whom are named Karen] argue that there was no dress code violation and other passengers supported them, but the situation escalated leading to their removal from the plane without a refund. [Another woman who stood up for them and her child were also booted.]

You will get off my plane and respect my...
Two female passengers have accused a Spirit Airlines [male] flight attendant of sexism after he allegedly kicked them off a plane for their choice of dress, as seen in a viral video.

“It’s just humiliating having to be escorted and treated like a criminal just because we were wearing crop tops,” one of the flyers, whose name is Tara, said.

A video of the spat shows the flight attendants telling the pair to turn the camera off as they protest their purported ejection. “There’s nothing that says you can’t [wear] a crop top,” sputters one of the duo in the clip.

“Dude, just chill.” Teri [who goes by Teresa] wrote in the caption that “everyone else agreed though that there was nothing wrong with what we were wearing and that crop tops are not against their dress code.
“He then continued to treat us poorly and give us no reasoning as to why he wanted to kick us off,” Teri wrote. Tara agreed.

“Other passengers joined in and tried defending us, but ultimately a supervisor lied to us and told us either we would leave the flight or she would bring the police,” Teri explained.

Magic? How to levitate over Grand Canyon

D. Copperfield; Mystic Knights; Dhr. Seven, Jen (Dharma Bud Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly
Who could fly, even with stage wires, across the great expanse of the smaller U.S. Grand Canyon or the far larger though far less famous Copper Canyon of Mexico? Not a trickster magician.

First we get still, then stillness sets in.
Wisdom Quarterly
has always been interested in one magic feat above the others: the possibility of real yogic levitation. This is achievable through successful stillness (samadhi) meditation. But what does it take to still the mind, to still thought, to still the heart, to still emotions, memories, intrusive thoughts and feelings, loops, ruminating, planning, distractions, monkey mind frenzy, restlessness, sleepiness, laziness, lassitude, boredom, inattentiveness, ADHD, yearning, pining, speculating, skepticism, in brief, the many and varied manifestations of the Five Hindrances?

The goal is not control. It's not being controlled.
Those are the first five obstacles to even remaining on the cushion to begin to get still. Stillness temporarily purifies the mind/heart so that coherence can set in, when everything is in its place and doing its thing. That is the beginning of samma-samadhi, what we have for so long been misled to think means "right concentration." Unfortunately, in English, "concentration" seems like a doing, an intentional act, a strain, a holding of the breath, gritting of the teeth, a strong determination, and force... It may be. But this is not samadhi. Samadhi requires no hard doing, only allowing, accepting, awareness of what is (not embellishing, distorting, or departing the scene for some place more interesting or stimulating, more pleasant or profound). Be here now. It's so simple, it's impossible at the beginning. Just "be"? No, but LET IT BE. Allow. Exhale. Find contentment in this moment.

Right Concentration: Jhanas (L. Brasington)
Rest. It begins with calm, and calm begins with relaxation that is founded on simply letting things be just as they are and radically accepting them. Stay (rather than departing).

Mindfulness (sati) is wakefulness, bare (unembellished, undistorted) awareness of what is, whatever it is, vigilance (keeping a vigil), coming back again and again (if by habit the mind turns away in search of sensuality, anger/aversion, restless states, drowsiness, or skeptical disquietude).

Begin with quiet. If we are quiet on the inside, it will be easy to be quiet on the outside. Therefore, be quiet on the outside until the inside quietens. This will be the first step to the first absorption, being pulled into the object of meditation (the breath or whatever it is).

When there is no this-and-that but only that being with this (a nonduality between that meditation object over there and this meditator over here because of being so absorbed, so interested, so zesty for the sweet release of calm and bliss, piti (rapture). Stay with it. It gets better. Bliss increases. Then next bliss loses its charm, and calm is better. And next stillness is better. These first four stages are the ingredients of a solid foundation for learning to meditate.

And this is odd. We meditate to learn to meditate. That is, we let the natural happen -- this natural state of stilling and absorbing -- so that we can use that strength of mind to investigate two very important things, ultimate-materiality and ultimate-mentality. But that will come.

Practicing Jhanas (Snyder and Rasmussen)
For now, we must perform a lesser miracle, a mundane marvel, a magic that is no trick. It's time to levitate. The ancients knew how to do it. Non-Buddhist yogis knew how to do it. Catholic saints, sometimes not taking themselves too seriously, took themselves so lightly as to float, ascend, be raptured up. There are historical accounts of this in the West. Look them up.

We are going the way of the East, so it is more systematic. The secrets are buried in Buddhaghosa's manual of Buddhist meditation, The Path of Purification. It gives the instructions, not that they'll make much sense to the layperson, the nonpractitioner. Find a teacher who knows-and-sees. They exist. (Here's a list).

It will not even be possible to do anything in the first paragraph without morality, virtue, self-restraint. Immorality leads to disquietude, to worry, scruples, rumination, remorse, regret, repentance, fear and foreboding of what may come as a result. So take up virtue because, as the great musician Danny Elfman so aptly said so very long ago: "Peace of mind, peace of mind, hard to keep, hard to find, look ahead, look behind, looking for, peace of mind, peace of mind, can't relax, can't unwind, deep inside, secret mind" ("I'm Afraid" by the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo).

That is all for now.
  • What about the magician David Copperfield? You don't think he took up Buddhist meditation or the Ashtanga (Eight Limb) Yoga and actually learned to sit cross-legged and move through the air like a bird, do you?
I don't know how he did it. It looks completely fake, a trick of the camera, an early version of green screen technology, using filming methods made famous by David Blaine street magic.
  • What kind of "magic" was that?
If a sign of light comes, don't look. Let it be.
Because he was on the street, we assumed it was all filmed as performed on the street. But actually he was just filming real reactions to tricks. The tricks were enhanced later so that what we saw was assumed to be what the people on the street saw, which looked amazing. In fact, those people on the street were tricked with set up scenarios and magic helpers. They were illusions. But the real illusion is what we saw, people seemingly verifying on the street what we thought we were watching at home. For instance, he claims to levitate. From home, this is shown as coming up a foot or more off the ground. In real life, that is to say, on the street, he only came up an inch or two. And that he did by turning his body, having them stand at an angle, then tilting one foot, which from a particular angle looks like two feet leaving the ground. From another angle, it's clearly just one foot. He's supporting his weight totally on the other foot. It's laughable. But it freaked some people out because he's so weird, intense, and convincing. And something (a trick) happened that the people on the street react to -- not all of them -- but the very best reactions got put into his TV specials to vouch that he was "really" doing what he misled us to believe he was doing. Easy. Relatively easy. He's a very skilled deceiver, and that the stage magician's stock and trade. We're all in agreement with it. Ask Houdini. But that is not to say real magic doesn't exist. It does.

How a chicken can fly: path to enlightenment

Gary Larson (art); Dhr. Seven (poem), Ashley Wells, Amber Larson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

A flood? Why didn't you fly? - I lost the balloon.
"Oh, how sad, Chicken Bob, to see you try.
They call you Fryer, but you're meant to fly."
He muttered, I thought, asked, "Hey, what the cluck?"
I sat and I pondered: What could be up?

My eyes lifted as thought-balloon drifted.
Wide pupils shifted, reading, it's scripted:
How bright the idea that balloon brought!
Better the bulb than the darkness of thought.

Now what if he rows as I provide lift?
I get him to float, won't he flap his wings?
Now "what if" is no way to live a life.
For what if I ask, and he but denies?

So sinched at the waist, a string through his strut,
Seatbelt fitted in haste, he levitates up!
The helium balloon wafted him high.
I said, "Daft bird, see, it's better to try!"

Analysis
What is at the very heart of wisdom?
-So, Seven, you're saying, through symbolism and Gary Larson's comic strip, that we should figure out a novel solution and try it?

Poetry is not symbolic. I'm just telling a story about a scared bird, Chicken Bob, who thought he couldn't. Then with a little help he could. It's like when I try to meditate, I can't. But with a little help, who knows. Once my teacher applied peppermint essential oil to my upper lip to keep my attention at the breath as it goes in and out (anapanasati bhavana). It worked. It was subtle, but peppermint is brightening and kept me awake and vigorous, yet not too excited as green tea might do. I would never have thought of that. "Plant helpers" can go a long way to bring us to the verge of samadhi and insight. But without a deva to point that out, it's hard for a fledging sitter or an old bird set in his ways to make progress.

O, hail, Kwan Yin, Goddess of Compassion!
-Ingenius! So you're saying everyone should try peppermint to advance their sitting practice.

I'm saying no such thing. I'm just telling a story about a scared bird, Chicken Bob, who thought he couldn't.

-Is he "Chicken Little," symbolically?

No, he's Chicken Bob.

-Ah, and is "flying" meditation?

No, meditation is meditation, generally of two kinds, initial calming and subsequently systematic practice with a purified mind to know-and-see.

-Know-and-see what?

Ultimate materiality (kalapas) and mentality (cittas).

-What does that mean?

There are particles of perception, and discreet mind-moments that form the stream of consciousness we take to be one thing when it's really part of an impersonal PROCESS going on. We take this process to be a "self," and we cling to it.

-Isn't it a "self"?

Heart of Perfect Wisdom (Prajna Paramita)
No, it's not-self. The Heart Sutra makes this clear: form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are the Five Aggregates or "Heaps" clung to as self. But they are not self.
  • Isn't it a self that clings to self?
  • -No, a "self" doesn't cling; ultimately speaking, form clings to form, feeling to feeling, perception to perception, mental formations to mental formations, and consciousness clings to consciousness. The whole entanglement is ignorance, avidyaand snapping out of it to wisdom, knowing-and-seeing, and right view is "awakening" or bodhi).
-What ARE they then?

They are impermanent, disappointing, impersonal (empty) phenomena arising and passing away. When we see that directly, we can let go.

-If we let go, is that flying?

Letting go is freedom. Enlightenment is possible in this very life, right here right now, because there's only now, right?

-The past is not real? The future is not real?

One is a memory, one is a dream, and all that's real is right now. This present moment is real and it's all that's ever been real. Forget the rest. Be at your best RIGHT NOW.

-Is that what Ram Dass (Harvard's Dr. Richard Alpert) was saying when he famously said, "Be here now"?

I don't know. But it's good advice. Be. Here. NOW.

-Isn't that Eckhart Tolle's advice?

I think it might be Byron Katie's advice. Do The Work, asking the Four Questions. That'll bring you into the present moment, that is this NOW.

-Then who needs help?

Sometimes we need help. People weren't just spontaneously awakening until the Buddha arose and pointed the Way, revealed the Path, gave step-by-step instructions to make an end of all suffering right now.

-Those instructions still exist?

Yes, they do. Each teacher might put a spin on them unique to each individual's capacity and unique experience, but the fundamentals are right there in the ancient texts.

-Which texts?

The Pali canon is pretty reliable. Pa Auk Sayadaw has renewed their vitality and cleared the cobwebs and so has awakened students like Beth Upton, Ven. Dhammadipa, Sayalay Susila, Sayalay Dipankara, Tina Rasmussen, Stephen Snyder, and my own erstwhile teacher. Even Ayya Khema and her student Leigh Brasington, with the help of a Sri Lankan meditating monk, made it back to the original right-stillness (samma-samadhi) practices for calm. Vipassana is a little more involved.

-But the Heart Sutra is in Sanskrit not Pali!

It is, and isn't it amazing that it is the mostly widely read "discourse" in Mahayana Buddhism, yet no one gets what it's about?

-What's it about?

Ven. Sariputra, foremost in wisdom
"Emptiness" (shunyata). The mark of things is that they are all impersonal. All composite "things" (dharmas) are anatta, "not self." The "perfection of wisdom" is the direct realization that all things are impersonal -- particularly those five things clung to as a "self": form (body) [arrangements of the Four Elements or characteristics of materiality]; feeling (sensation), perception (all we perceive), mental formations (all the other psychological stuff), and the hat trick consciousness (awareness) [the four characteristics of mentality].

-And that made you think up a bird poem?!

No, there's no symbolism. I'm just telling a story about a scared bird, Chicken Bob, who thought he couldn't.
