What is the cause of LUCK? (Karma)

But isn't it all chance and random chaos?
Is it chance (luck), or is it past karma coming to fruition to influence what happens now? There are many kinds of karma-vipaka (results of karma) and many fruits (phala).

We plant seeds all the time. We should consider what might happen as a result. Sometimes a past karma (the track laid down by a previous deed, a mental impression made by an intention) ripens to frustrate other things coming to fruition. We are spared. It is so complicated that it cannot be known.
  • Liquid Luck: Good Fortune
What is karma? It is "action" or, more exactly, the "intention" (cetana) behind and motivating a mental, verbal, or physical act, a deed, therefore an "intentional action." We have volitions and impulses to do, and how we conduct ourselves is very important because that choice has the power to produce results now and in the future. Immediately, it may produce a feeling (such as remorse or elation) and later a "fruit" (phala). When have we done deeds? Only in the past. When can we DO deeds? Only now, only in the present moment. We are always choosing to wait or to act or what act. The Buddha pointed out that the underlying motivations guided by nongreed, nonaversion, and nondelusion produce beautiful results, "lucky" (fortunate) results, pleasant and welcome results. We do we want? Luck! When do we want it? All the time! What should we do?
  • Blah, blah, blah, that's all spiritual, but we don't believe in the spiritual. We want the tangible. If only there were a "science" of luck. Enter Dr. Joseph Gallenberger: How much proof is enough proof? If it were science -- demonstrable, repeatable, tangible results -- we wanted, here we have it. "Luck" not good enough? How about magic? Enter Dean Radin.
  • Yeah, okay, but what about easy magic for the rest of us non-scientists? Enter Jose Silva, now presented by Vishen Lakhiani (mindvalley.com). If Abraham-Hicks (the council of spirit being calling itself "Abraham" being channeled by Esther Hicks) and when Seth spoke we weren't listening, here's a chance at mind control, control of our own minds that is.
We can make good luck - Dr. J. Gallenberger
If a drop of water is place on the forearm, according to science, statistics, and probability, its path down cannot be known, cannot be predicted. There are too factors influencing it. So consider how many more are operating in our lives. Drop six or seven billion billiard balls on a pool table, all of them banging around, then try to know or predict the path of one of them.

The Conscious Universe
It's not clear if there's freewill -- science says no -- but some measure of will influences our lives. If it didn't, we would be fatalists simply experiencing results all the time and never forming new volitions.

However, even in this case, what are we experiencing the results of? Those things in the past are what give rise to subsequent experiences (allowing for some retrocausation as well). The present moment therefore becomes very important.

Supernormal Science, Yoga, and the Evidence for Extraordinary Psychic Abilities
.
What we do now has a tremendous influence even if the results are not seen soon enough for our liking. People in casual speech keep saying the slogan, "Karma's a b*tch" as a handy explanation when they like what's happening to someone else as they get their comeuppance.

"They caught the guy. They're throwing him in prison, a life sentence, throwing away the key. Ha ha ha, karma's a b*tch."

Do such people ever consider what else karma is? Often, it is a blessing, particularly for humans.

Behold the animals. They've got it good, huh? Laying around the living room, eating Smart 'n Fancy snacks and meals, getting pampered, combed, allowed on the bed, given a private door (cut into the door) to come and go as they please. That's happening due to their past and sometimes present karma, as are their looks and pretty marks that make them lovable or unpopular.

And when they get abused by humans, go outside to kill or get killed, attack or get attacked, contract insect infestations or diseases, get threatened by tougher street animals, feral and wild ones, what is all that? That's the life of an animal. It is a miserable thing, yet we praise it saying, "They have it easy" when we at best are talking about a very small subset of creatures, not paying attention to the vast majority of species and individuals. Of all the dogs in the world today, most canines are miserable and short-lived, as with felines and fish and birds and reptiles.

Of all the humans, how are they doing? They have it the best so far as we can see. And if we pay unbiased attention (mindful, not avoiding the unpleasant or being drawn by the pleasant or confused by the neutral), we'll soon see most are not having a good experience.

Buddhism says the human plane is the worst fortunate plane. At the bottom of the human barrel begins the first plane considered the "downfall," the dreaded subhuman worlds. In these worlds, which includes animals, hungry ghosts, spirits, unseen beings of various sorts, and that's not even arriving at the planes that can properly be labeled "hells," where beings, having fallen in, experience the results of their unsavory deeds. It's not the end of the world, far from it. The world keeps going on and on, life after life, year after year, experience after experience.

The act of enslaving living beings is heavy.
So it's good, very good, to insert some skillful deeds (kusala karmas) in there while the getting's good. The getting is good right now on this human plane. It never gets better than now. Why would it be good? Karma's a B. It's good because of another slogan: "Karma: It's everywhere you're going to be." 🙂

We were completely wrong about why bugs are attracted to lights
(Anton Petrov) Feb. 12, 2024:  This video discusses a new study that explains why bugs are attracted to light...and it's a bit depressing. They are not attracted to light. That is not what has been happening at all, even though we all thought that self-evidently it was.

Happiness and Hugging Meditation (Nov. 29)

Ananda M. (Dharma Meditation Initiative), Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The secret to happiness is to get off of addictive dopamine (dope derived from the use of our cell phones, social media, white sugar, etc.)

Dr. Lustig's scientific research
Instead, we get onto serotonin, as Dr. Robert Lustig, MD's research amply shows (robertlustig.com/4cs).

Buddhist meditation is founded on long-term happiness, contentment, and a kind of supersensual bliss called piti that corresponds to Dr. Lustig's findings.

There are The Four C's to apply. One of them is to connect face to face, seeing others deeply, hugging.

Summer 77: "White Punks on Dope" (video)

The Tubes live on the Sunset Strip; Seth Auberon, Crystal Quintero (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

WARNING: Cussing, shocking antics, excesses of the 1970 people would rather forget!

Teenagers had a race for the night time, spent my cash on every high I could find, wasted time in every school in L.A., getting loose, I didn't care what the kids say.

CHORUS: We're white punks on dope. Mom and dad live in Hollywood, hang myself when I get enough rope. Can't clean up, though I know I should. White punks on dope...

("TV-Glotzer" in German*) Nina Hagen's spinon a classic tune, late 70s

Other dudes are living in the ghetto (wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-ooooo), but born in Beverly Hills don't seem much better (wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-ooooo).

I go crazy 'cause my folks are so bleeding rich (wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-ooooo), have to score when I get that rich white punk itch. Sounds real classy, living in a chateau (wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-oo-wa-ooooo). So lonely, all the other kids will never know. CHORUS. White punks on dope...

"White Punks on Dope" Nina Hagen version
*GERMAN TV-Glotzer: Alone! The world has forgotten about me. I am hanging around. F*cked it up with everyone. No desire to do a thing. I feel old, like my grandma in a swamp. I turn on the [TV] box: the Daltons, Waltons, everyone. I stare from East to West, 2, 5, 4. No way I can decide. Everything here is so beautifully colorful! I stare at the TV. (She stares at the TV). I stare at the TV. (She stares at the TV). Wow! I am so dead! Was this my life already? My beautiful imagination! My sensors all have had it! I turn on the box, happiness, smooth smooth, fun fun! I stare from East to West, 2, 5, 4. No way I can decide. Everything here is so beautifully colorful! I stare at the TV. (She stares at the TV). I stare at the TV. (She stares at the TV). Yeah! I am going nuts. I won't touch another book. Literature? Puke, puke! Makes me sick. And the medical novels I've read with twelve. Boy, I am so well-read! Hey! And the refreshment waffles have leaked, gag gag. And this f*cking chocolate makes me fatter and fatter and fatter and fatter and, oh dear! I turn on the box -- happiness, smooth smooth, fun fun! I stare from East to West, 2, 5, 4. No way I can decide. Everything here is so beautifully colorful! I stare at the TV...TV TV TV TV is a drug. TV is addictive. TV TV TV TV...

Science: How to give a woman an orgasm

IFLScience; Archives of Sexual Behavior; Ashley Wells, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
No one knows how I work down there; even I don't know! (Olga Zaretska/Shutterstock)

"Mind the gap" as they say in England.
Gaps, for the most part, are considered bad. The gender pay gap, for example, is notoriously awful.

The “orgasm gap” -- the fact that men achieve orgasm a lot more [easily and] frequently than women during sexual frivolities -- is also decidedly rubbish.

And now science has waltzed in to save the day by trying to close it.
Have a hang up(s) about sex? Let it go.
  • What does Buddhism say about sex for Buddhists? Avoid sexual misconduct, and it's fine. Sensual craving (trying to pain in life, real or perceived, by hedonistic means) can become an obsession, and it doesn't work. But most earthlings are predisposed to sensual desire, and there's a healthy way to approach it -- not guilt, shame, a sexist double-standard, repression, or acting out.
A group of researchers from Indiana University and Chapman University surveyed over 52,000 people  -- which included a range of straight, gay, lesbian, and bisexual men and women between the ages of 18 and 65.

They concluded that there is a “golden trio” of actions that will all-but-ensure female orgasm occurs. That, ladies and gentlemen, is deep kissing, genital stimulation, and oral sex.

The study, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, is a curious insight into just how bad the orgasm gap actually is. Of those surveyed, 95 percent of heterosexual men reported that they orgasmed during sexual acts with a partner, whereas just 65 percent of heterosexual women [reported that they] did.

Heterosexual women actually fared the worst of any category, with bisexual women reaching that hallowed state 66 percent of the time, rising to 86 percent for lesbian women. For bisexual men, the figure was 88 percent, and this rose to 89 percent for gay men.

I learned nothing from Vogue!
The aforementioned golden trio is the key way to close this orgasm gap -- and as the authors of the study note that education is key. Nearly 30 percent of men think that vaginal intercourse is the best way for women to achieve orgasm.

And as co-author Elisabeth Lloyd, a professor of biology at Indiana University, told The Guardian: “This couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Just 35 percent of heterosexual women orgasmed during vaginal sex alone. On the other hand, 80 percent of heterosexual women and 91 percent of lesbians orgasmed after the golden trio was applied.

The trio isn’t the only thing that helps. Writing in their study, the authors explain that women were more likely to orgasm if they were “more satisfied with their relationship, ask for what they want in bed, praise their partner for something they did in bed, call/email to tease about doing something sexual, wear sexy lingerie, try anal stimulation" and “act out fantasies.” More

Marijuana: Medicine or Poison?

Wisdom Quarterly
Celebrated in the media, frowned on by cops (on duty), abused by the public, bemoaned by collaterally damaged victims of others' abuse... pot is funny; that doesn't make it healthy. How to quit pot addiction

The Buddha did NOT smoke marijuana, survive on hemp seeds, or advocate the consumption of any intoxicant, no matter what Cypress Hill or hempsters suggest. (Hemp good, drug harmful).

On the contrary, the fifth precept runs: "I undertake to abstain from consuming intoxicants that occasion heedlessness." Laying around sinking like a stone instead of advancing is spoken of as a terrible thing in the Advice to Householders.

In fact, he warned that "There are, young householder, six miserable consequences to indulging in intoxicants that occasion heedlessness: loss of wealth, increase in quarrels, susceptibility to disease, loss of reputation, indecent exposure, and weakened intellect" (Sigalovada Sutra).

If people get stoned, that's on them. The crime is thinking, saying, or acting as if the Buddha is applauding or winking.
  • Wisdom Quarterly's BOTTOM LINE: We don't care if you smoke it, but don't allow yourself to be deluded into thinking it's a "Buddhist" thing to do. (If you "have" to have it, note what the HHC says is good about it*).

Marijuana is UNSAFE
Sam de Brito (smh.com.au)
Before we answer this, let me say I've smoked more dope than 95 per cent of readers, guaranteed. For close to 20 years I inhaled leaf, tip, buds, bush heads, hydro, chocolate "Buddha," sinsemilla [seedless], Mexican dirt weed, power skunk, Maui wowie, black hash, brown hash, green hash, hash oil, the putty out of downpipes... even ground up seeds and stems.

I've cooked with pot, eaten it [along with countless munchies] in cakes, brownies, banana bread, and straight off the plant. I've drunk it in thick shakes and smoothies, teas, bong water and, once, smeared resin on my eyeballs because someone told me it would get me stoned. (It didn't work).

I've grown it, stolen in, given it away, traded it for a wetsuit, even pretended it was parsley and kangaroo scat when selling it. So please don't tell me I'm anti-dope.

I just reckon it's time that people, in an attempt to sound enlightened, stop telling the world that "marijuana is harmless [or marijuana is healthy]." Anyone who's been around it for long enough knows that's not true.

I do not know whether others have ever heard voices after taking drugs. But I have, several times, and it used to be what I paid good money for. The problem was, as my drug career deepened and lengthened, those pesky head noises would appear after just one cone of hydro (hydroponically-grown). And there's the rub.

Hydro-marijuana is everywhere nowadays. It's the dope of choice for younger smokers, because nothing else delivers the punch and the value for money like a knuckle of super-sticky buds out of some biker's basement grow-room.

If one examines a hydro set-up, it is obvious they get hot and humid. Thus they are a magnet for every type of bug and insect within a mile. This is why a lot of growers hit their plants with a cocktail of pesticides and fungicides that make Agent Orange look like asthma medicine.

This means the plants, and the buds kids smoke, are also chock full of those pesticides. This is in addition to chemical fertilizers chosen by growers whose knowledge of chemicals and their effect on the human brain is limited to nonexistent. More

Treatment
The negative effects of marijuana addiction will impact an individual physically, emotionally, psychologically, and socially, causing the person's life to be unproductive and even disconcerting. Fortunately, addiction treatment can help establish energy and progress to individuals robbed of life by marijuana addiction. There is a reason why the individual smokes. And all of those reasons rolled up into one do change the fact that they experience harm as a result. It is not enough to switch addictions. More

Does "Monopoly" teach Capitalism?

The Straight Dope
Was Monopoly originally meant to teach people about the evils of capitalism?
Dear Cecil: I heard the original Monopoly game, before Parker Brothers took it over, was designed to teach people how broken capitalism is. Is that true? — Matt, Whitehorse, Yukon

Cecil replies: Yes, it's more or less true, although you have to ask: who needs a game to understand how screwed up capitalism is when all you have to do is read the news?

Be that as it may, I convened the Straight Dope staff to play several versions of proto-Monopoly. Their review: nothing like the socialists to make the capitalists look good. The earliest recognizable version of what we know as Monopoly was patented by Lizzie Magie in 1904. The Landlord’s Game, as she called it, featured a board with the familiar circuit of increasingly pricey neighborhoods interspersed with railroads and utilities.

At three of the corners were Go to Jail, Public Park (the ancestral version of Free Parking), and the Jail itself. The fourth corner, however, wasn’t labeled “Go” but instead bore a drawing of the globe encircled by the lofty words “Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages.”

Translation: you got a hundred bucks. Nonetheless you realize: someone here has an agenda. The story goes that Magie intended her game to be a teaching tool about the injustices of capitalism. She was a fan of the theories of political economist Henry George, who thought landlords were parasites and advocated a "single tax" on them to replace all other taxes. More

Death By Sex

Autoerotic asphyxiation is famously in the news again as details of Kung Fu/Kill Bill star David Carradine's death are coming to light: "Actor David Carradine's death in June 2009 is believed to be the result of erotic asphyxiation [Ref]."
Erotic asphyxiation refers to intentionally cutting off oxygen to the brain for sexual arousal. It is also called asphyxiophilia, autoerotic asphyxia, scarfing, kotzwarraism, or breath control play.

Colloquially, a person engaging in the activity is sometimes called a "gasper." The erotic interest in asphyxiation is classified as a paraphilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. Psychiatrist Joseph Merlino stated that it meets the criteria for a disorder "because it has the potential for lethality or serious injury" [Ref].

What's the Story on Autoerotic Asphyxiation?
A Straight Dope Classic from Cecil Adam's Storehouse of Human Knowledge (10/28/88)

Dear Cecil: I heard about a strange sexual practice the other day that I hope you can tell me more about. It seems a boy was found dead with a rope around his neck, but he hadn't purposely killed himself. Apparently he was masturbating at the time of his death and hanged himself in order to heighten the sexual sensation. The radio announcer called it an autoerotic suicide and said it is not uncommon. I've never heard of it. Can you tell me more? — Desiree Blough, Santa Barbara, California

Dear Desiree: Time for a walk on the weird side, kids. Autoerotic asphyxiation -- "suicide" is a misnomer, since death is usually accidental -- is in fact fairly common. One researcher estimates there are at least 50 deaths annually nationwide. The victims are mostly young males; evidently if you live long enough to become an old male you start getting a partner to help you, although it's quite dangerous even so.

Autoerotic asphyxiation arose out of the observation that men executed by hanging often got an erection and sometimes ejaculated. It's described in detail in de Sade's Justine and is mentioned in Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Why it works is unclear. The simplest explanation is that lack of oxygen causes lightheadedness, reducing inhibitions and enhancing the sexual experience. Masochistic fantasies, castration anxiety, and other psychological factors no doubt also play a role.

The problem is that it's easy to go too far. As little as seven pounds of pressure will collapse the carotid artery, producing unconsciousness within seconds. Many victims are bondage freaks and their elaborate bindings make self-rescue difficult.

Needless to say, this is not something you should try at home. Judging from the photos...not only do you end up dead, you look real stupid when they find you. I mention this on the theory that if fear of death won't stop somebody, maybe fear of embarrassment will. More>>

Family wants the FBI to investigate death

BANGKOK (AP, 6/6/09) – The family of American actor David Carradine has asked the FBI to help investigate his death after his body was found in a hotel closet in Thailand's capital with a rope tied to his neck, wrist, and genitals.

Carradine's family does not believe he committed suicide and is troubled by conflicting accounts about the circumstances of his death, Mark Geragos, an attorney for brother Keith Carradine, told CNN's Larry King late Friday. More>>

If it must be done, it should certainly never be done in Bangkok of all places, as Murray Head warned Westerners so long ago.
