MOM (🤡Big Merla): Chop sui(cide) is a song about a lovely vegan Chinese food, mixed vegetables in a wok with a little soy sauce and lots of steaming white rice, right?
WQ: Are you f'n crazy? Of course that's what it's about, but I think now, at least in California and the groovier places like Tennessee and Oregon, we go with brown rice.
MOM: C'mon, I know the song must be about suicide somewhere. He [Serj Tankian] says it right in the song!
WQ: I think he's complaining about people trying to use teriyaki sauce in a stir-fry with tofu sticks.
MOM: Ha, ha, help me. I want to understand. I have my own new mom version of the song that's more suitable for young ears. I find myself singing a lot of System [of a Down] songs as I clean up kid toys.
WQ: You can catch the band live in San Francisco this summer. They're playing on August 11, 2024. You know, for a song that came out in 2009, it has the distinction of racking up 1.3+ billion views. And that's just the official video on YouTube. Add all the streaming services, the lyric videos, knock offs, and excerpts, and that's pretty darn good for Armenian alt-metal. The Turks never had a chance to take the other side of the argument.
MOM: Which argument?
WQ: The "genocide."
MOM: Oh, I think Israel is totally guilty.
What is he saying? Why doesn't he slow down?
WQ: True but this is a previous genocide the Ottoman Empire Turks are accused of, which was said to be laughed off as a genocide no one cares about by Hitler when he wanted to genocide all the Jews in Europe or at least the few in Germany because he said they were ruining his Reich's economy. And his previous best friend had been Jewish. Nobody talks too much about that.
MOM: How sad.

WQ: People say he wasn't even mad at Jews themselves, just scapegoating them and sending them to work camps because they had in his view unfairly hoarded too much of the wealth in Germany. But Jews swear he hated them and wanted to exterminate them all because of his hate and nothing else, which is odd because a lot of Ashkenazi Jews in Germany looked exactly like Christian Germans, so exactly that a lot of Nazis couldn't tell the difference except for some cultural markers like gesticulation (moving hands and arms) gestures when talking or speaking Yiddish (which is gibberish German making fun of Christianity).
MOM: But aren't Jews the ultimate victims who say everyone hates them.

Meanwhile, in on the west coast, in California's Channel Islands, two eagle hatchlings have been born and are doing well.

Channel Islands National Park. Park officials say the first egg.
Park officials say the first egg hatched Saturday and the second bird
poked its head out of its shell Monday in Sauces Canyon on Santa Cruz
Island.
Officials say it's the first successful hatch after three years of attempts for the parents.
The 11-year old male was brought to the island in 2005 and the female arrived in 2006 as part of an ongoing recovery effort.

Stand-up Comedy and Mental Illness: Conversation with Bamford
Over the last several years Maria Bamford has become one of the most acclaimed and original stand-up comics in the country. Along with Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, and Brian Posehn, Bamford was part of the Comedians of Comedy tour; she’s also released three solo albums and done two Comedy Central specials. Bamford’s voice (or rather, voices) can be heard regularly on Nickelodeon, Adult Swim, PBS, and elsewhere.
But her signature work may be The Maria Bamford Show, a brilliant Web series from 2009 that was screened at the Museum of Art + Design in New York. The premise of the series was that Bamford had had a nervous breakdown on stage and ended up back in Minnesota living with her parents. Ed Sullivan: "I'm not as serious as I sound"? She doesn't sound serious at all and, apparently, neither is NPR in this case. After the brilliant articles posted on this site about professional voice artists, the management here has decided to go the other direction. It's hard enough to endure the aural assault from local news channels of untrained, immature types, who over-pronounce vowels, swallow compound consonants, and drops the end of every sentence into a tired gravel [called vocal fry]. But I'm sure teenage girls will love her. NPR has given me yet another reason to change the channel.
For women to feel good about our
births, we need to own our births by being prepared, well-informed, and
making sure we have the right kind of support.
Although there is much
about the labor and birthing process that we cannot predict or control,
we can empower ourselves.
We can choose baby and mother-friendly care
providers and hospitals/birth centers, knowing our options, being an
active part of the decision-making process, and trusting in our ability
to birth -- all of which will enable us to become more confident and
nurturing mothers.

Whether it is an obstetrician or midwife that practices in a
hospital, birth center, or home, it is imperative that the mama-to-be feels
safe and trusts her care provider.
This is one of the most important
decisions we will make. Our care provider will be the one to ultimately make all of the final decisions about us and our baby’s health and safety.
Routine
visits should be slow and unrushed with plenty of time to ask
questions, discuss options, and communicate preferences. Mothers-to-be
should be treated with care, kindness, and respect and encouraged in their
ability to birth and mother.

home births, there are specific questions that are important when
interviewing midwives, such as how many clients they take a month, if
they work with an assistant midwife, what their transfer rate is, and how they would handle it if two people were in labor at the same time.
Birth doulas are trained professionals who understand
the physiology of birth and the emotional and physical needs of women
in labor. They provide continuous physical, emotional, and
informational support before, during, and just after birth. They perceive their role as nurturing and recognizing birth as a key experience the
mother will remember throughout life.
A doula’s role changes
depending on the needs of the woman and her partner. Doulas can
encourage the partner to become involved in the birth to the extent he
or she feels comfortable by demonstrating effective techniques that can
be used by the partner during each stage of labor, offering reassurance
about the normal progress of labor, and/or allowing the partner the
freedom to simply be present with the mother and love her. More

Breaking Dawn premieres. The forces of the Moon versus those badly affected by the Moon. "Twilight" is basically Dracula vs. Wolfman. Only the vampires are melodramatic and the wolves are so CGI. This series is a mess. But, melodrama can be good. Soap opera thrillers for tweens who need a romantic lead are keeping the mall theaters alive.
Giggly Bieber kids and gayish gothy teens are outnumbered by horndog moms. Fans everywhere are sure to keep this blockbuster going. And that's good. It's keeping "romance" alive. And there's nothing higher to live for. So get used to it.
The world needs more Harry Potter with heavy petting because Emma Thompson isn't doing anything to meet our need for sizzle. Taylor Lautner is pure peach fuzz for a hirsute leading man. Robert Pattinson is very, very Brit'ish. And Kristen Stewart's lesbian child molester kiss with Dakota Fanning was a real let down.
I don't even really like that guy, Kristen Stewart admits in various interviews. Like, you know what I mean? Like, uh, you know?
Tiger moms, listen up. A number of years ago, Richard Perlmutter was toying with the idea of creating lyrics set to masterpieces of classical music when one day, while humming Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, the phrase "Beethoven's Wig is very big" popped into his head.
"It really resonated with my objectives because the words fit perfectly with the first eight notes of the symphony," recalls Perlmutter. "Besides, the wig is sort of like a mascot for classical music."
After dressing up the entire first movement with lyrics that are charged with "laugh out loud" humor that tickles funny bones of all ages, he turned to works of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Haydn, and other musical heavyweights.
Eventually, his muse led him to a studio where he created a groundbreaking recording, backed up by full symphony orchestra and four opera singers.
Perlmutter's first album, "Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies," was released in 2002. Within a week of its debut, he was featured on NPR's All Things Considered, followed by an appearance on NBC's Today Show.
The album shot to the top of Amazon's Bestseller List, holding the #1 position on both the Amazon classical and children's music sales charts for four months. WASHINGTON – The new U.S. ambassador for glo-bal women's issues pledged on April 23, 2009 the Obama administration's "deep commitment" to a U.N. blueprint aimed at slowing the world's population explosion and empowering women.
At the heart of the action plan adopted at a U.N. population conference in Cairo 15 years ago is a demand for women's equality through education, economic development, access to modern birth control, and the right to choose if and when to become pregnant.
Underlying the conference was the record growth in global population and research that showed that educated women choose to have fewer children.
In 1994, when delegates from 180 countries met in Cairo, the population was 5.7 billion. According to the latest U.N. estimates, it will hit 7 billion early in 2012 and top 9 billion in 2050. More>>
