Pre-Buddhist Thai-Burmese Spirit Worlds

(GO Asia) Thailand and Burma's secret Spirit World | culture and spirituality documentary (AMP)
Pantheon of animist "Nat" spirits on altar
A spirit house is a shrine to the protective spirit of a place that is found in the Southeast Asian Buddhist countries of Thailand (Siam), Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia (Khmer Kingdom), Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. They are normally in the form of small, roofed structure mounted on a pillar or a dais. They can range in size from small platforms to houses large enough for people to enter. Spirit houses are intended to provide a shelter for spirits that could cause problems for the people if not appeased. More
What is a nat or "spirit" in SE Asia?

Venerate me and I will help you from beyond.
The nats (နတ်) are spirits, deities, god-like ancestors, poltergeists, unseen (invisible) beings venerated in Burma (aka Myanmar) and neighboring Southeast Asian Buddhist countries in conjunction with Theravada Buddhism.

Nats are divided between the 37 Great Nats, who were given that status by King Anawrahta when he formalized the official list of nats. Most of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths [1].

There are two types of nats in Burmese belief, nat sein (နတ်စိမ်း), which are humans who were deified after their deaths, and all other nats, which are spirits of nature (like the kami of Japan, elementals, spirits of water, trees, etc.)

Much like sainthood, nats can be designated for a variety of reasons, including those only known in certain regions in Burma. Nat worship is less common in urban areas than in rural areas and is practiced among ethnic minorities of Burma as well as in mainstream Bamar society.

However, it is among the Theravada Buddhist Bamar that the most highly developed form of ceremony and ritual is seen [2]. More: Nat (deity)

RAP goes too far: metal Ghostemane

Ghostemane "Mercury" Fleischer Studio TRXSH GXNG TRASH 新 ドラゴン
May 17, 2025: NEW from Gho$tmane: Prompto - Victoria's Secret (T R A S H)

If rap is dumbed down, I'll make it TRASH!
So much of rap is stupid, unbearably so. Rock 'n roll was better, not by much but it was making something new of older Black music (blues, guitar driven gospel, jazz). But we're coming around to this rap thingy after a half century. For all the boisterous bluster, some really has kick (umph), the right beat. We're finally seeing it.
  • What four young Black men formed and called themselves "Gho$tmane," incorporating death and Black metal into their sound? Here they are:

White privilege extends into the rap universe?
(Yeah, that guy, Sunny McCalifornia. How could a boy with buckteeth get so groovy he not only develops a distinctive sound but a unique aesthetic from the 1920s?) We have to guess that it's because we mainly hear pop-rap (the cr-p rap the radio plays to death) that rap seems boring and anything but phresh.

But with radio removed, one is now exposed to all the other ways of listening (peer-to-peer sharing, TikTok, underground shows, networks, influencers, curation, recommendations, luck, and social media.

With the censors out and the "filters" on, there's some really good stuff out there. Some recent Buddhist articles we produced got a tremendous response with what looks like hundreds of thousands of views. It's just rap. Rap is old. Hasn't all the hoopla about rap died down already. It might have about the old stuff, but there is much more vital NEW stuff. Who even knew this was rap.

We thought it would be good to hear rap songs done in another genre thanks to the GREAT Richard Cheese (longtime fans since he appearances on the Kevin & Bean Show decades ago). So just tapping in something like death metal rap got an unexpectedly good response on YouTube. What, it's a thing? We thought, what are these suggestions? So clicking on a few of them, not bad. It was just Slipknot when Corey spits bars. We knew about that. We didn't know some of these songs got videos made for them.

Then, skipping down, we tapped the White Album looking suggestion, just to see, and the song that came up was really good or not what we expected. It was rap, not death metal. We were looking for death metal. But then it was metal as rap. Who were these guys? Are there bands of Black youths who listen to black metal (which is called "black" not because of the race of the artists or fans but due to the dark arts discussed by the music, such as Venom, Mercyful Fate, Deicide) and rap about it? No. Who knows? (There's that horrorcore freakshow stuff, but that seems very niche). Everyone listens to everything nowadays. There's no reason to stay in a compartment and limit yourself.

Rock rap with Wes and Limp Bizkit

This was someone smart enough to rap but very dark, but still actual rap, not a parody or imitation. Hey, there's something here. You see, a few months ago, we surfed through a video of Limp Bizkit live in the Netherlands, and before the show, they are getting the crowd amped up and start playing a rap song.

All of the 100% Caucasian audience loves it, starts moving, singing along. "They do know this is not a Limp Bizkit song, right?" was the question that crossed our minds. But it was a rap song, and that was the amazing thing--one that Limp Bizkit knew it, and two that the audience loved it so much. Oh yeah, duh, they are there to see rap-rock. It turns out it wasn't Limp Bizkit but Limp's DJ spinning Ludacris as Wes is standing, holding his guitar, in his briefs, about to noodle.

That's how The Heart Sutra (RAP version) article got written. Real rap is what Ludacris was doing, that old skool yellin and cars and women and other featured rappers on a track.

Who's ever heard of Gho$temane? Apparently, everybody but us because he's already played Coachella, though not with the reception he might have been expecting (during the day, under the desert sun, on the lawn, in the heat, to a smaller audience.

How is this guy not in all our faces or in the manifesto of the teen who takes a shot at Eminem in the future? Didn't Megan Fox's boytoy diss Marshal Mathers in a rap only to have it blow up in his face? Who ever heard about MGK? Or Riff Raff featured on Far East Movement's "Illest," Vanilla Ice (aka Rob Van Winkle) or the way mad white rappers The Bloodhound Gang feature him as Robby Winkle, that Australian one-hit-wonder Masked Wolf, where drill (gangsta rap is breaking out) as well as biker gangs.

Eminem said the N word with style in rap battle. - And he managed to finally rhyme with "orange"

The rap trap is some fake cr-p

The Origins of Halloween (video)

The Roots of Hallowe’en: Is it possible to observe a pre-commercialized version?
Christopher Nyerges, PasadenaWeekly.com, 10/31/24 edited by Wisdom Quarterly
Written by ghost, author's late wife
Why has the day of All Hallows Eve — Hallowe’en — devolved into a day of fun and fear? How was this once-Holy Day commemorated before it was all commercialized into a sexy and scary night? Is it possible to discover the roots of this day and observe it in its original fashion today?

My circle of friends attempted to answer these questions. We determined that we’d need to dig up whatever historical facts [like Sir Frazer's The Golden Bough] we could find that show how this day was commemorated before the Year 1700, more or less.
  • The Golden Bough: A Study in Comparative Religion (retitled The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion in its second edition, gutenberg.org)
Also by the author: Wild Edible Plants of N. America
Though we couldn’t be 100% certain, we at least assumed that “commercialization” didn’t really exist in 1700. All of the European and some American commemorations before that year probably retained some semblance of what the day was originally all about. So, first, let’s begin with the day.

It is believed that the ancient Celts observed something called a “Samhain festival” toward the end of October. The World Book Encyclopedia states: “The Celts believed that the dead could walk among the living at this time.”

During Samhain (pronounced \sao-in\), the living could visit with the dead. Elements of the customs can be traced to a Druid ceremony in pre-Christian times.

The Celts had festivals for two major gods — a sun god and a god of the dead (called Samhain), whose festival was held on Nov. 1st, the beginning of the Celtic New Year.  More: The Roots of Hallowe’en

Nikola Tesla lives: channeled by Fran Thoman

It was an interesting weekend at the Conscious Life Expo in Los Angeles. One nondescript talk by three authors produced a most amazing meeting. We got to meet Tesla! Well, we asked his channel questions, she consulted with him, and we got answers.

The channel's name is Francesca Thoman, and she is able to answer authoritatively about Tesla, his beliefs, insights, and current interests. Yes, he's still alive, somewhere, somehow, as we all will be in the afterlife, the post-life, the next life after this.

Einstein admired the Buddha. Tesla had help.
That is not an unusual thing. It always happens until we are free (as arhats). We all live again and again, life after life. It's not the "I" exactly, as impermanence (anicca) makes it so it is not the same person yet it is not another, Rather, one follows from the other, moment to moment, so there are no two moments when we are the same. We are passing away at every moment.

But there is continuity in the process, which is impersonal (anatta) and beset by disappointment (dukkha). (These are the Three Universal Marks of Existence as explained by the Buddha, on account of which, in the ultimate sense, there is no self, no atta or atman, no ego, no personality. Nevertheless, a self is clung to in the Five Aggregates (form, feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness).

In the conventional sense, of course there's a self. The empty process continues life after life, and we go on in the long "continued wandering on" called samsara). So Tesla continues, or what that being in becoming is identifying with as the genius Tesla.

He still cares enough about humanity on earth to look on, wanting to share new insights into how life actually works, how matter and time work. He sees that there are four unfolded dimensions and seven or so infolded ones that are not revealed but nevertheless in operation.

Understanding this will yield a Theory of Everything, and any scientist working on these things at death will see the other dimensions and understand what could not be understood on this side at this time.

If only Tesla and Thoman could find a good mathematician to inspire now, the world would have the answer now. The equations and calculations, inspired by Tesla and articulated by Thoman, would confirm it. A unified theory is at hand, again, if only a mathematician wanting it can be found.

New physics
The spirit of Nikola Tesla shares a wide range of his original perceptions of physics in this new channeled material:
  • New concepts of time and DNA;
  • the nature of information;
  • the colors of time and the colors of space;
  • dark light;
  • intelligent light;
  • the effects of human consciousness upon reality and time.
Created from Tesla's continued fascination with the full nature of how human experience affects reality, he shares 14 articles, conveying his intelligence, compassion, and wisdom as he describes some of what he has learned on the other side of life about the nature of being human within a multidimensional universe.

Tesla presents these ideas to not only expand human perceptions and to open questions, but to give practical benefit for spiritual seekers as well through several intriguing meditations. More

Psychedelics really can lift depression

Natalie Maximets (originally appeared in Your Tango.com via MSN.com, 8/28/22); Pat Macpherson, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Hope or Hype: Can Psychedelics Treat Depression?
I was feeling low then I got high.
As difficult as it can be to manage depression, there is hope. It begins with education — and it helps to have an open-minded approach. Depression or major depressive disorder is a serious mental health illness that affects the way a person thinks, feels and acts.

In a nutshell, it is a mood disorder that brings a persistent feeling of sadness, loss of interest, and other severe symptoms.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization, around 3.8% of the entire world population is affected by depression, which translates to approximately 280 million people of all ages.
This illness interferes with one’s daily activities and may lead to suicidal thoughts, which is why treating this condition properly is crucial for everyone who is facing it. How to deal with it? According to the National Institutes for Mental Health, depression treatment typically involves three basic elements:
  • Self-help, such as
  • meditation,
  • healthy nutrition,
  • sports,
  • and so on.
Professional therapies with psychologists and other mental health professionals.

Taking the right medicines, such as SSRI antidepressants

This is the traditional formula for treating such mood disorders. But many people diagnosed with depression are turning to an alternative treatment option: psychedelics.
  • RELATED: How the most deeply happy people deal with emotional pain (without covering it up)
How do psychedelic trips (entheogenic experiences) treat depression? In recent years, alternative (non-clinical) ways of treating depression have been gaining momentum.

[Magic mushrooms, LSD, DMT, MDMA]

One such alternative treatment method involves psychedelic trips. People who’ve tried them, as well as researchers and scientists, claim that the consumption of psychedelic drugs can contribute to healing a depressed mind in ways that medicine can’t.

According to experts, psychedelic trips can even improve the conditions of people who suffer from non-treatable, severe depressive disorders. But is it really true?

Can psychedelics alleviate depression, or is it just hype? In this article, we are going to answer this question and help grasp the concept behind psychedelic depression treatment better.
  • RELATED: What it feels like to have anxiety and depression at the same time
Psychedelic drugs, such as LSD, “magic mushrooms,” and the like, have long been known as powerful tools for consciousness transformation.

Psychedelic experiences, which often cause powerful hallucinations or "trips," are believed to trigger outside-the-box thinking, give access to “hidden” knowledge, and provide a new, deeper outlook on life.

No wonder why such drugs have been used for holistic healing for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. But what does psychedelic therapy look like these days?

Today, psychedelic trip sessions are broadly used for treating severe mental disorders, such as depression. According to numerous studies, such an approach can help even with non-treatable cases.

Apparently, psilocybin contained in psychedelic mushrooms can reduce the activity of certain brain regions, thus, regulating and improving a number of cognitive functions.

Studies suggest that even a single psychedelic session can significantly alleviate the symptoms of depression. However, an important part of the therapy is the presence of an experienced mental health professional.

Under the supervision of a reliable guide and supported by talk therapy (before, during, and post-session), psychedelic trips can lead to complete healing.
  • RELATED: 10 agonizing truths depressed people never talk about how does psilocybin affect the human brain?
Psilocybin is a chemical compound contained in certain species of fungi (mushrooms). It is a prodrug element responsible for the hallucinogenic effects of “magic mushrooms."

Simply put, psilocybin normalizes the brain’s landscape, allowing more seamless mind-wandering and, thus, paves the way for more efficient depression treatment in the future.

It relaxes fixed patterns of thinking that often get in the way of success in untreatable depression cases. In order to assess the possibility of psychedelic treatment of depression, it’s crucial to understand the mechanism of action of this compound on the human brain in the first place.

So how does it affect the brain? The first and primary effect of psilocybin consumption is the relaxation of the Default Mode Network (DMN).

This network spans brain regions that remain more active during passive tasks when a person is not focused on the external world. The DMN is active during mind-wandering and daydreaming.

It also becomes active when we think about ourselves and others, as well as when we remember the past and plan for the future. According to numerous studies, people who score higher in depression ratings also have higher compulsive activity in the Default Mode Network.

Thus, by relaxing and reducing the activity of the DMN, psilocybin can really treat depression. According to a recent study by scientists from UC San Francisco and Imperial College London, psilocybin also improves connections between different brain regions, thus, freeing people from long-held patterns of excessive self-focus and rumination.

Finally, this compound is also proven to fix human patterns of thinking. According to fMRI scans, depressed people’s brains have more chaotic “landscapes,” with deep wells that prevent seamless movement between one’s own thoughts and perspectives.

At the same time, fMRI scans show that psilocybin therapy basically flattens the depressed brain’s landscape, allowing a person to access new insights, thoughts, and perspectives.
  • RELATED: The 6 types of depression — and how can tell the difference can using psychedelics be dangerous?
We already know that the mechanism of psilocybin’s action on the human brain is scientifically proven to have a therapeutic effect and, thus, has the potential to alleviate depression even in its most severe conditions. But does this mean that any use of psychedelics has a positive effect? Not at all!

When resorting to psychedelic treatment without supervision, one can face a variety of threats and negative side effects. Namely, here are the biggest hazards of self-use of psilocybin:

1. Development of psychosis and schizophrenia
According to many experts, psychedelic therapy is contraindicated for patients who have a certain family history of mental illnesses. Namely, people who have relatives diagnosed with schizophrenia should stay back from such treatment due to the high risk of the development of such disorders.

Of course, psychedelics aren’t always associated with the development of schizophrenia symptoms. There is a wide array of genetic, environmental, and other factors that can push the progression of this disease.

However, it’s important to understand that any substance abuse can lead to a so-called drug-induced psychosis. It is a form of the condition that takes place when a person experiences symptoms linked to clinical psychosis, such as hallucinations or delusions.

According to experts, episodes of drug psychosis may eventually pull the clinic psychosis or schizophrenia trigger and provoke the development of these diseases in people prone to them.
  • RELATED: 15 things to know about people who have concealed depression
2. Bad trip
Oh no, it's happening again, a bad trip!
One of the largest risks of taking psychedelics is the experience of a bad trip. In a nutshell, a bad trip is a highly negative experience that can be accompanied by fear, dysphoria, terrifying illusions, paranoia, panic, obsessive thoughts, and even physical pain.

Needless to say, bad trips can be incredibly traumatic and have a lasting negative effect on one’s physical and mental health. There are several things known to increase the probability of such a journey. These include:
  • Taking excessive doses of a drug
  • Starting the session in a negative emotional state (set and setting)
  • Running the session in the wrong setting with excessive external stimulation
  • Mixing drugs with alcohol
Although these are the things that increase the likelihood of having a bad trip, the truth is that it can happen to anyone, anytime. And the biggest problem is that once someone has a bad trip, it can be barely possible to stop it.

Therefore, being in the right set and setting and having an experienced sitter alongside for the trip are crucial for having a positive, healing experience.
  • RELATED: 6 hidden signs a depression is more than temporary
3. Existential crisis
Another big threat associated with psychedelics consumption is the development of an existential crisis. Due to their hallucinogenic effect, psychedelics can cause the distortion of the habitual picture of the world.

Without proper preparation and post-session discussion (called integration), such experiences can cause false memories or make one feel like one has received life-changing insights that are difficult to integrate.

For instance, a person of non-Jewish origin may recollect the horrors of a concentration camp. This can cause severe existential anxiety and bring unbearable harm to one’s mental health.
  • RELATED: The best depiction of depression
4. Risky behavior
Finally, there is one more fact that should keep one away from the self-use of psychedelics on one's own. When experiencing a psychedelic trip, one can have impaired judgment.

Sometimes, people report believing that they have superhuman powers, which causes them to do hazardous things, such as trying to jump off a building. [While it may never have happened, it is the source of moral panic to scare people away from medicinal use of natural healing agents.]

Without paid professional supervision, there might be no one to stop a person from flying. So to stay alive and safe on the sofa, and avoid actual threats to personal safety, always consult with a doctor and do only what s/he says to do, for the safety of people all around. We cannot have people trying to cure themselves or doctors would have no work and could not make their house, car, college, and boat payments.

Education, an open mind — and patience
A psychedelic trip can be a very blissful, eye-opening, and profoundly healing experience, one remembered for life, taking on spiritual and cosmic significance.

At the same time, in the wrong setting and with the wrong set, it can be an incredibly frightening and painful experience.

All in all, psychedelic trips really CAN treat depression. But there is a need for the right mindset and physical setting -- and a shamanic, compassionate, or professional guide. And, often, it takes more than one session to get tangible results. More

Wisdom from the Spirit World (audio)

C. Obley, Paul Keller (bigseance.com, 8/30/16); Coast to Coast (5/11/20); Eds., Wisdom Quarterly
Carole J. Obley and Soul to Soul Connections, The Big Séance Podcast: My Paranormal World #27, (775) 583-5563. She talks about past lives, meditation, using her gifts, comforting messages from spirit, and her book. She's done thousands of readings seeking guidance and healing from the spirit world and been the subject of articles, radio, and TV shows. She is an author and taught workshops at Lily Dale, NY, the largest US center for Spiritualism.

I'm Still With You (Obley)
In thousands of private and group sessions, spiritual medium Carole J. Obley (soulvisions.net) has communicated with souls who have crossed over.

She speaks about how contact with the spirit world can be a catalyst in healing grief. We are currently going through a great "reset" in the face of the pandemic.

During some of her recent readings, clients' ancestors are coming through and talking about their tough times, such as living through the Great Depression and the challenges they overcame.

I communicate with the dead. They are not gone. They can be with us. They get reborn.
.
Tell them to forgive, Carole.
Obley has conducted readings for the loved ones of suicide victims and those who died accidentally from drug overdoses.

In such cases, the spirit communicating has never, not once, been happy about that choice, but have to work through regret over cutting their lives short, wasting this rare human rebirth.

Obley has recently delved into the Akashic Records to look at individual files.

The spirits are saying they're here with us.
They are said to be the sum total of all that has gone on from the beginning of time. These records or energetic codes are attached to each person and always with us, she said.

They include experiences of non-physical realms, life on other planets, and between lives. (We live many, many lives, evolving and devolving).

The spirit world is real (Cora L. V. Scott)
What we did does not change, and the record remains, but if any these records are painful or negative, we can re-frame them. Our reaction to them evolves and changes. We all have the power and gift of choice, Obley explains.

The spirits communicating from beyond stress the importance of forgiveness, which can be viewed as a "release of the past" and an opportunity to remember our own divine potential. More + AUDIO

Shamans of Siberia: healers chosen by spirits

RT Documentary, Oct. 2, 2017; Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

In windswept Siberia (Russia's Far East, our west), shamans [from the Buddhist word shramans, "wandering ascetics," as distinct from "temple priests" called Brahmins] have for generations cured illnesses without touching their patients, sung with their diaphragms, and controlled the weather. Some can travel over long distances and even levitate, hovering above birch trees. They regularly communicate with good and harmful "spirits." One of them, Tyurgen, manages to balance shamanism with life in industrial Chelyabinsk. Apart from his spiritual activities, he practices a unique musical style: electronic music with folk instruments, throat singing, and folklore-inspired lyrics. Meet an anthropologist who explains what really goes on in a shaman's brain when s/he is in a trance state.

Experiments in astral projection (video)

Universe Inside You, June 7, 2018; Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Experiments Proving Astral Projection is Real
Astral projection is a conscious out-of-body experience that proves the existence of consciousness or "spirit" that can operate independent of the physical body. We have various bodies in the form of sheaths, one of which is the astral body.

It can travel outside of the physical body and go anywhere throughout the universe. By leaving the physical body, the astral body floats and traverses across the world and at least two dimensions -- this and and the astral world -- to observe the environment.

Meditator in the middle of astral world
Individuals who practice astral projection are aware of what’s happening around them. The prove that astral projection is a real phenomenon rather than a fabrication of the mind.

It is also supported by quantum physics, because as quantum physics posits that everything is energy and that we are all connected. So separating our consciousness (sixth sense) from our physical body (five senses) to explore other realms such as the fourth dimension, the  astral.

Astral projection gives us incredible freedom. During a projection into the astral, we can do absolutely everything we desire:
  • flying over the world,
  • visiting friends and observing them,
  • going back or forward in time,
  • communicating with higher frequency beings,
  • and even having astral sex of the sort devas probably enjoy on a regular basis.
The possibilities in the astral realm are limitless. Many people believe astral projection is the ultimate evidence of life after death. It is solid proof for the hypothesis that other higher dimensions exist, the Buddha having defined 31 of them.

It also shows the fact that consciousness can separate and operate apart from our sensual (kama) physical bodies by using our fine-material (rupa) body. And it shows that our brief life here on Earth is simply a short sojourn in the long samsaric journey from an endless wandering on.

Although many people struggle to achieve a successful astral projection, rest assured that absolutely everyone has this ability in them. Everyone can successfully achieve an astral projection. It's a matter of techniques and repetitions.
