Prince Harry meditates daily: Mindfulness

Britain’s Prince Harry tells Buddhist monk about daily meditation practice
+1: Princess Meghan (thesun.co.uk)
Meeting well-wishers during a royal visit to Birkenhead in Merseyside, England, on January 14, 2019, Britain’s Prince Harry reportedly shared with 69-year-old Buddhist lama Kelsang Sonam that he meditates every day.

Following their conversation, Kelsang Sonam presented the prince a copy of the book Eight Steps to Happiness: The Buddhist Way of Loving Kindness by the Tibetan [renegade anti-Dalai Lama separatist Vajrayana] Dharma teacher Kelsang Gyatso.

Prince Harry and his wife, American former actress and humanitarian [Princess] Meghan Markle, visited a community café and supermarket called Number 7 selling discounted food for low-income families, operated by Feeding Birkenhead, a coalition of organizations “working together to eliminate hunger” in the local community.

During the visit, the couple had the chance to sit with some of the organization’s staff and customers, which is when the prince and Kelsang Sonam spoke.

That's my son, and I'm so glad he meditates with his lovely wife Meghan (Princess Di)
.
The Daily Mail tabloid’s correspondent Rebecca English tweeted about their conversation: “Random fact of the day: a 69-year-old Buddhist monk named Kelsang Sonam, who gave Harry a copy of a book titled Eight Steps to Happiness, said the prince told him he meditates every day” (Rebecca English on Twitter).

Prince Andrew does not meditate.
[Black California actress turned Princess] Markle might have introduced her husband to meditation.

Prior to marrying the redheaded prince, she practiced meditation daily, and the practice continued as she made the [stressful] transition to royal life.

Years before her royal engagement, Light Watkins (beginmeditating.com), an American "Vedic meditation" [$$] teacher, taught her Buddhist mindfulness practice,* which she quickly adopted into her daily wellbeing routine. More
  • COMMENT: Erika Belair points out that the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) is a well-known separatist sect with only one leader who is not recognized by any other Buddhist group, transmission, or teacher [particularly not the current Dalai Lama]. NKT is hostile toward the Dalai Lama and frequently demonstrates against him and has allegedly even threatened his life. NKT is doing an ancient Tibetan practice which the Dalai Lama has prohibited, claiming it can lead to physical and mental harm [and is alleged the cause of China's invasion and occupation of Tibet]. For details of that practice, type "Shugden" into a search engine. [Tibet's "pope," the 14th Dalai Lama, likely regards this dharmapala or wrathful deity/protector as a "demon" as did the 5th Dalai Lama.] For details of the sect and the damage they have allegedly caused people, search "New Kadampa." I hope Harry will be warned, as they also like money donations. OK, they are not the only ones but...

The Four Foundations or Fourfold Setting Up of Mindfulness
[See PART 1] The Four "Foundations of Mindfulness" (lit., "awareness of mindfulness," sati-upatthāna), are systematic contemplations of:
  1. body (form, materiality)
  2. feeling (sensation)
  3. mind (mentality)
  4. mind-objects.
1st human depictions of the Buddha: Gandhara
For sati ("mindfulness, wakefulness, vigilance, bare-awareness [free of evaluation and reactivity]," figuratively, striving-for-insight-into).

Two sutras give a detailed treatment of this subject, so important for the practice of Buddhist meditation/mental cultivation. The two Satipatthāna Sutras (DN 22 and MN 10) proclaim these weighty words as they begin and again when they close:

"The one and only way [or the direct way] that leads to the attainment of purity [of view], to the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, to the end of pain and grief, to the entering of the right path, and to the realization of nirvana is the Four Foundations of Mindfulness."

After these ominous introductory words, aasking the question, "What are these four?," it is said that the meditator dwells in contemplation of the body, feelings [sensations], the mind, and mind-objects "ardent, clearly conscious and mindful, after setting aside worldly greed and grief."

Bliss becomes joy.
These four systematic contemplations, in reality, are not taken merely as separate exercises. On the contrary, in many cases, particularly for arriving at the blissful meditative absorptions (jhanas), the four are inseparably associated with one another.

Meditation is the greatest thing!
So the Satipathāna Sutra forms an illustration of the way these four contemplations relate to the Five Aggregates Clung to as Self (khandha) simultaneously come to be realized.

This finally leads to insight and enlightenment (awakening) by directly realizing the impersonal nature of all things and all forms of existence. More

Dalai Lama to visit So. California (July 5-7)

Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly; UC Irvine (news.uci.edu)

The 14th Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday to be celebrated with a "Global Compassion Summit"

A three-day summit will be presented by Friends of the Dalai Lama in partnership with UCI (University of California at Irvine) and the Center for Living Peace.

Friends of the Dalai Lama announced that a Global Compassion Summit will be held in honor of the current Dalai Lama’s landmark 80th birthday. The summit will take place July 5-7, 2015 and will be the official world celebration of his birthday. It will feature world leaders, Nobel Laureates, celebrity guests, speakers, and performers from around the globe. Tickets are on sale. (Contact local Buddhist temples for free tickets, as available).

This Southern California event is hosted by Friends of the Dalai Lama, UC Irvine, and the Center for Living Peace, after the kick-off was held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, which accommodates 18,000 attendees. The following two days of summit dialogues, panels, and special gatherings will take place on the UCI campus. This will be the Dalai Lama’s first visit to Anaheim, "The City of Kindness," and his third visit to Irvine. All events are open to the general public.

“This milestone occasion is a joyous opportunity for people to come together in celebration of His Holiness’ life and achievements,” said Venerable Lama Tenzin Dhonden, Personal Emissary for Peace to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Founder and Chair of the independent, non-profit Friends of the Dalai Lama.

“His Holiness has devoted his life’s work to positively guide audiences all over the world to open their minds and hearts to peaceful and compassionate existence. On this very special birthday, we will have a chance to celebrate his accomplishments in many areas and hear his exciting view for the years to come,” Lama Tenzin continued:

“I believe 2015 is a year of great hope. On behalf of Friends of the Dalai Lama, I’d like to express my gratitude to UC Irvine and the Center for Living Peace for joining us in hosting the upcoming Global Compassion Summit in Southern California this July 2015.”

The 14th Dalai Lama may or may not be the last in a line of Tibetan Buddhist leaders.
.
Vice Chancellor Student Affairs Thomas A. Parham added, “We are humbled and honored that His Holiness the Dalai Lama will return to our campus on this special birthday. It is an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate his achievements which have inspired our students through the UCI XIV Dalai Lama Scholarship to create impactful projects to promote and celebrate compassion throughout our community and beyond.”

“At UCI, we believe that developing global citizens must involve educating the heart as well as the mind, while we also seek to excite students’ passions and ignite their spirits,” he also shared.

“Few people exemplify living peace as poignantly as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama,” said Kelly Thornton Smith, philanthropist and founder of Center for Living Peace. “We feel such a deep sense of gratitude to be able to host this momentous occasion and to help inspire everyone around the globe to make Good Happen every day.”

The Global Compassion Summit is designed to foster a dialogue on compassion and peace with his diverse, multi-ethnic, global audience. The event will be a celebration of the Dalai Lama’s lifetime of devotion to the work of spreading the message of the value of peace, kindness, and universal compassion throughout the world.

The program will highlight the different areas in which the Dalai Lama has had great impact. It will be a platform for on-stage dialogue amongst friends, fellow Nobel Laureates, leaders, and experts with whom he has collaborated or shares common values toward the achievement of Universal Peace. Dialogues to include:
  • Awakening Compassion: The Transformative Power of Creativity and Art
  • Compassionate Planet: The Effects of Climate Change and Taking Action to Resolve this Global Issue
  • Wisdom, Vision, and Experience: A Dialogue with Nobel Laureates
  • Youth Leadership Panel: The Significance of Education in Advancing Universal Human Values
“The Global Compassion Summit provides an opportunity for people from all walks of life to learn about universal compassion -- to better themselves and the world they live in,” said Lama Tenzin Dhonden.

“Together we will celebrate the tireless work and accomplishments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the official 80th birthday celebration, while sharing well wishes for a long life,” he added.

Friends of the Dalai Lama is an independent, non-profit organization founded to amplify the positive messages of the Dalai Lama. The organization supports important endeavors that align with his values of compassion and peace. The Global Compassion Summit honoring his 80th birthday is the first event presented by Friends of the Dalai Lama, and it is the only official event of its kind taking place during his actual birthday.

NOTE: The 14th Dalai Lama does not charge a speaking engagement fee, and no aspect of his visit is being used to profit financially. The Global Compassion Summit and the world birthday celebration for His Holiness is a privately funded event. More
Friends of the Dalai Lama is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2014 by Lama Tenzin Dhonden, Personal Emissary for Peace to the 14th Dalai Lama. It facilitates the his participation in public and private events. The work it delivers is based on Six Core Value Elements that enable each audience to gain a deeper and actionable understanding of his message on Human Values, Secular Ethics, Inter-Religious Dialogue, Environmental Protection, Sustainability, Compassionate Education, and Ethical Leadership for the sake of humanity.

The Center for Living Peace is a nonprofit organization founded by Kelly Thornton Smith that creates opportunities for people to find inner peace and purpose, discover their own gifts and talents, and share them with the world. Nestled inside a unique facility near UCI, public classes and program offerings encourage the community to turn positive intentions into action and to truly be the change they wish to see in the world.

UC Irvine: UCI’s connection with the Dalai Lama dates back to 2004 when he first visited the campus and inspired the creation of the XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship. Since then, 12 scholars have married the values of ethical leadership, peace, and positive global relations with the university’s mission of public service to the community with such projects as “Compassion in Medicine,” “Kindness Month,” and the “Peace Flag Project.” The Dalai Lama spoke to a sold out arena at UCI in 2011 and has maintained correspondence with students about gratitude and compassion in action. The Dalai Lama and UCI leadership are aligned in support of holistic education as a path to a better world.

Dalai Lama -- Overexposed?

The 14th Dalai Lama (head of the red hat sect of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism and government of Tibet in exile) alongside the 265th pope and 16th Benedict (head of the Roman Catholic religion and king of Vatican City State).

Why does the current Dalai Lama get so much attention on Wisdom Quarterly? First of all, he does not represent Buddhism, but rather only a fraction of a small subsection (Vajrayana). Second, Chinese officials are furious with him. Third, he is uncomfortably like the pope (in superficial ways).

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, gestures during a news conference in New Delhi on 3/31/09. China has kept Tibetan areas under lockdown this month, which is not only the anniversary of last year's riots but also marks 50 years since the failed uprising against Chinese rule and the Dalai Lama's flight into exile in India (Reuters/B. Mathur).

However, his constant backing by celebrities (and his own celebrity behavior) frequently puts him in the news. That's the first thing; WQ covers him because his PR machine puts him in a position to be covered. Second, Chinese officials are furious with him -- instigating a massive propaganda campaign to discredit him, a computer spy ring to subvert his sophisticated worldwide operations, and unrelenting attacks on Tibet to forget him complete with a dictator-approved replacement (Panchen) Lama.
If a brutal dictatorship is against you, WQ is for you. Third, behind his celebrity status, Tenzin Gyatso is regarded as a charismatic and moral leader.

Dalai Lama visually corroborates, with his hands as horns, as he speculates that the Chinese government probably thinks of him as the devil at a press conference in New Delhi, 3/31/09 (AP/Saurabh Das).

He is the inspiration for the famous Star Wars character Yoda. He is a riveting speaker and author (albeit they're likely to be ghostwritten). While by his own admission he's neither enlightened nor a very good meditator (Barbara Walters interview), he is beloved by countless American sympathizers and Buddhists. He is a non-violent hero akin to Martin Luther King, Jr. He is the public face of Buddhism largely because China invaded Tibet. There are other candidates for the post.

  • Aung San Suu Kyi (Burmese Theravada)
  • Thich Nhat Hanh (Vietnamese Zen/Mahayana)
  • Goenka (Indian/Burmese Theravada)
  • Bhikkhu Bodhi (American/Sri Lankan Theravada)
  • Lisa Simpson (prominent Buddhist cartoon figure)

But currently none is as compelling or as facile with the media. Perhaps when circumstances repeatedly thrust one of the alternates into the spotlight... One is often brought to fame kicking and screaming because holocausts have both villains and sympathetic characters.

In the end, the world needs a heroine. In the absence of that, a compassionately heroic figure will do.

Exile Tibetan traditional dancers prepare to perform next to a photograph of their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, at an event commemorating 50 years of struggle for Tibet's independence, in Bangalore, India, 3/31/09. On this day, 50 years ago, Lama set foot in India as an exile (AP/Aijaz Rahi).

Inside Pottala Palace (Tibet)

Visit the home of the dalai lamas. There is a famous 1,000-year-old structure in Lhasa, Tibet. From there, Vajrayana Buddhism has its roots and power -- a kind of Vajrayana Buddhist "Vatican." Its "pope," the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was exiled to India with only a dream of returning. As the spiritual and political leader (chief lama and chief of state), a growing movement to repatriate him and win autonomy for the Himalayan region that was once independent Tibet.

Touching a Woman

Joan Halifax and the Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso)

Two monks, one old one young, were happily walking along when they came to a river. They saw a beautiful young woman standing at the edge of the bank. She told the monks that she was afraid to cross the river because she might slip and be carried off downstream. She asked for help in crossing over.

The monks were celibate, having taken vows never to so much as touch a woman. The old monk, however, sensing the extreme anxiety of the young woman, lifted her across his back and carried her to the other side. The young monk was shocked and scandalized. She thanked him and went on her way.

The monks continued their journey. But the younger monk was disturbed at having witnessed his older and presumably wiser companion break their vow so thoughtlessly. After three hours of walking and pondering, he could finally take it no more. Unable to contain himself he burst out, "Tell me, venerable sir, what did it feel like to break your vow which you'd held for so many years? What did it feel like to allow sensuality to tempt you from the path? And what did it feel like to have that woman's smooth warm thighs wrapped around your waist, her breasts pressed against your back, her arms dangling around your neck, and her soft cheek almost brushing against your own? Tell me, venerable sir, exactly what is it like to carry such a beautiful young woman?"

The older monk remained silent for several steps then calmly replied, "Friend, it is you who should tell me what it's like to carry a beautiful woman. You have more experience. You see, I put her down three hours ago at the riverbank. You, on the other hand, are still carrying her."

Joan Halifax (born 1942) is a Zen Buddhist priest who received inka from Tetsugen Bernard Glassman, and was given the Lamp Transmission as a Dharmacharya (Dharma teacher) by Thich Nhat Hanh. She has been practicing Zen Buddhism since 1965. She was ordained by the Korean Zen Master Seung Sahn and became a teacher in the Kwan Um Zen School. Joan is head abbess and founder of the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, NM. The Upaya Zen Center is non-sectarian and has guest speakers from many traditions. She helped to found the Zen Peacemaker Order, and has held various teaching positions in institutions as prestigious as Harvard University.
-
Tenzin Gyatso (born 1935) is the 14th and current Dalai Lama. He is often referred to simply as "the Dalai Lama." He is a practicing member of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana) and is influential as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, as the world's most famous Buddhist monk, and as the leader of the exiled Tibetan government in Dharamsala, India.
