Ireland's prehistoric site, Europe's largest?

We've more and older archeology than England?
It seems that ancient Irish tales of "hollow hills" (underground caverns in mountains, as in Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" where ogres and supernatural beings dwell) are true. There are hillforts throughout the Emerald Isle. And the largest ever found in Northern Europe has just been uncovered, and it's massive.

Ireland discovery: the largest site ever
What, our pre-Christian roots go way back?
A vast prehistoric settlement hidden in the hills of County Wicklow is forcing archaeologists to rethink how people lived in Ireland more than 2,700 years ago.

What began as a closer look at a single hillfort has revealed a sprawling complex of ramparts, houses, and enclosures that specialists now say may be the largest clustered village ever identified in Ireland and Britain.

The scale of the discovery, and the suggestion that it could be the biggest prehistoric site of its kind in Northern Europe, is already reshaping debates about when urban-style living first emerged on the Atlantic edge of the continent.

We Irish Paddies stand with Palestinians!

The Wicklow hill that turned into a mega‑site
Baltinglass hillfort archeological site (monumentalireland.ie)

The story starts with a familiar landmark in the Irish landscape, a hillfort in Baltinglass that locals have long known as a dramatic feature above the County Wicklow countryside.

Archaeologists had catalogued it as one of several prominent fortified sites in the region, but new survey work has shown that the hilltop is only the core of a much larger complex.

What once looked like a single enclosure now appears to sit within a dense cluster of prehistoric houses and additional earthworks that extend across the slopes and surrounding ridges. More

Meditation shack, solitude shed (sutra)

Householder can dream of futuristic designs harnessing cosmic energy, but a treehouse is easier
.
Caution: DIY shacks may lead to mixed results
Sometimes, we just need a little time alone. This time of year can get stressful due to the political climate, holiday plans, visitors, work, and travel to visit others, so when we can get a bit of peace and quiet, it goes a long way.

If we’re ready to build our don't bother me sanctuary, Costco has it covered with its surprisingly chic line of "solitude sheds."

Palisade Storage Shed Palisade Storage Shed © amazon.com $2454.00

For $2,454, I got a VW van, a mattress, and a bucket. I love it and so does Rocky!
.
Can I add a full bathroom?
What are solitude sheds? They’re essentially outfitted annexes to a home. The Studio Shed line takes what one gets from a normal storage shed up a notch in comfort.

Every model includes installation, shipping, a finished interior with drywall and insulation and, perhaps most impressive, a full electrical and lighting package! It can all be customized, everything about it, online -- from the flooring to the siding color.

Portable do-it-yourself model on wheels
All these extra elements take the shed from a simple shack or backyard storage space to an area a person actually wants to chill in. More:

SUTRA: Wisdom
Bhikkhu Bodhi (trans), Paññā Sutta (AN 8.2) edited by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
What the Buddha taught still leads to awakening
“Meditators, there are eight causes and conditions that lead to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life when it has not yet been gained and furthermore to its increase, maturation, and consummation (fulfillment) by development after it has been gained. What are the eight?

I can do this, too!
(1) “Here, a meditator lives depending on the Teacher or on a certain monastic in the position of a teacher, toward whom one has set up a keen sense of moral shame and moral dread, affection and reverence. This is the first cause and condition that leads to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life when it has not yet been gained and furthermore to its increase, maturation, and consummation by development after it has been gained.

(2) “As one is living dependent on the Teacher or on a certain monastic in the position of a teacher, toward whom one has set up a keen sense of moral shame and moral dread, affection and reverence, one approaches that teacher from time to time and inquires: ‘How is this, venerable? What is the meaning of that?’ That venerable one then discloses what has not been disclosed, clears up what is obscure, and dispels perplexity about numerous perplexing points. This is the second cause and condition….

Solitude is of two kinds, physical and mental
(3) “Having heard that Teaching (Dhamma), one resorts to two kinds of withdrawal -- withdrawal of the body and withdrawal of the mind. This is the third cause and condition that leads to gaining the wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life….

(4) “One is virtuous; one dwells restrained by the [precepts or Pātimokkha], possessed of good conduct and resort, seeing danger in the smallest faults. Having undertaken the training rules, one trains in them. This is the fourth cause and condition that leads to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life….

(5) “One has learned much, remembers what one has learned, and accumulates what one has learned. Those teachings that are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with the right meaning and phrasing, which proclaim the perfectly complete and pure spiritual life — such teachings as these one has learned much of, retained in mind, recited verbally, mentally investigated, and penetrated well by view. This is the fifth cause and condition that leads to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life….

What a mystery it is to "go within"
(6) “One has aroused energy for abandoning unwholesome qualities and acquiring wholesome qualities; one is strong, firm in exertion, not casting off the duty of cultivating wholesome qualities. This is the sixth cause and condition that leads to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life….

(7) “In the midst of the spiritual community (Saṅgha), one does not engage in rambling and pointless talk. Either one speaks on the Dhamma, or one requests someone else to do so, or one adopts noble silence. This is the seventh cause and condition that leads to gaining the wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life….

(8) “One dwells contemplating arising and vanishing in the Five Aggregates clung to as self:
  1. ‘Such is form, such its origin, such its passing away;
  2. such is feeling…
  3. such is perception…
  4. such are volitional activities (mental formations)…
  5. such is consciousness, such its origin, such its passing away.’
“This is the eighth cause and condition that leads to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life when it has not yet been gained and to its increase, maturation, and fulfillment by development after it has been gained.

Knowing and seeing
(1) “One's fellows esteem one [for these eight qualities and say]... This [meditator] surely knows and sees.’ This quality leads to affection, respect, esteem, accord, and unity....

(8) “‘This [meditator] dwells contemplating the arising and vanishing of the Five Aggregates clung to as self…. This [meditator] surely knows and sees.’ This quality, too, leads to affection, respect, esteem, accord, and unity.

“These, meditators, are the eight causes and conditions that lead to gaining wisdom fundamental to the spiritual life when it has not yet been gained and to its increase, maturation, and consummation by development after it has been gained.”
Building backyard Studio Shed
(Calirado Kid) With home prices going absolutely bonkers in California, we decided to install a Studio Shed from Costco in the backyard. This decision saves thousands of dollars by not going with a traditional home remodel. We landed on the 10x12 foot Pagoda Signature Series Shed because we really loved the design but also wanted to reduce the amount of light coming in, hence the single door. This gives greater control of the lighting when we start doing more inside. The Studio Shed will act as an office and production room. We added several options onto the standard build, including electrical and lighting, split system for heating and A/C, and additional power outlets. We'll be setting up the Studio Shed for many uses to make it a fully functional space. People ask about the total cost of the project, which depends on who installs it. Questions? Feel free to message via IG or email at thecaliradokid@gmail.com. #studioshed #backyardoffice #costco
  • Studio Shed Pagoda Model with full Costco installation: $29,038 in July 2021
  • Add-ons (may differ with local contractors): Interior electrical install including canned LED lighting, outlets, and exterior lights: $1,800. Electrical to main breaker, including trenching: $1,575. Cat 6 run and termination: $500. Wooden floor frame (insulated): $1,750

Review: Wild Medicinal Plants Nature Walk

Nyerges is fixture in Los Angeles, and here he is being interviewed by the late great Huell Howser
(School of Self-Reliance)
School of Self-Reliance
Founder Christopher Nyerges led us through the woods at Pasadena's Hahamongna Watershed Park, foraging medicinal plants and
mushroom hunting. We spotted chicken of the woods growing on a carob tree and green gilled lepiota (Chlorophyllum molybdites).

Ethnobotany is a big field, and Ray Cirino is up the hill at the Los Angeles Permaculture Convergence 2023 at the commune/art colony (Zorthian Ranch). We're going to cob the external landscape to design a better water catchment system for the apocalypse.
Tim Martinez is trying to save the Arroyo Seco through the foundation. So if there's anything to learn, learn meditation, and follow it with foraging. Then even in the aftermath, there will be survival and progress.

STORE (School of Self-Reliance)
Today's class under an eclipsing sun had a massive turnout. A group of nursing students from a local university joined for class credit. And LAMS' Bat's women's group of plant foragers we're doing mycology next to the group.

So more than 50 people were present in two groups, picking up plant knowledge books, eating wild mushrooms and edibles, as Nyerges regaled everyone with quips and humorous anecdotes about his time on his TV survival program, The X-Show.

Nyerges was in Los Angeles so long that Huell Howser caught wind of him and came by for an episode of Visiting with Huell Howser.

Grow Food in LA: Urban Course (Crop Swap)

CropSwapLA.org; Crystal Quintero, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Living in a big city surrounded by many businesses, it's easy to forget that almost all of the food we consume is shipped in.

What happens when there are problems with the supply chain? Or if the neighborhood grocery store closes? Add that to the fact that the longer produce is in transport, the more nutrients it loses.

Guided Microfarm Walking Tour, Oct. 15
Led by Crop Swap LA Founder and Executive Director Jamiah Hargins, this Urban Survival Course imparts the necessary knowledge to start growing food TODAY.

The course is held at The Degnan Microfarm, Crop Swap LA's newest microfarm in Africa Town/Leimert Park.

Rooted - Yoga at the Microfarm, Oct. 20
Successfully take all four Urban Survival Courses and be eligible to receive a Crop Swap LA Urban Grower Certificate. A healthy lunch catered by a hyper local business is included in the course. More

Don't look at my bosom. It's Commodore's
There's an important book from PFAF (Plants for a Future): Plants for Your Food Forest: 500 Plants for Temperate Food Forests and Permaculture Gardens. It focuses on the attributes of plants suitable for "food forests," what each of us can contribute to a food forest ecosystem, including carbon sequestration, and the kinds of nourishing plant-based foods they yield.

The book suggests that community and small-scale food forests can provide a real alternative to intensive industrialized agriculture (harmful monoculture) and help combat many other inter-related environmental crises that threaten the future of life on Earth. More: pfaf.org
What's a "food forest"?
Plants for Your Food Forest (PFAF)
A "food forest" is a form of regenerative farming, a designed ecosystem modelled on nature, with the aim of growing food and sequestering carbon at the same time.

As a forest it will consist of plants that occupy different layers, typically a:
  • canopy layer
  • shrub layer
  • herb layer
  • and climbers.
All plants will be perennials in order for the soil to be wild, undisturbed, and regenerating. All plants will be food producing, will sequester carbon in their woody parts or in the soil itself, and will have useful functions in the forest ecosystem.

Workshops and courses (@arroyopermaculture)
The choice of what to grow in a food forest is challenging. It is not simply a matter of deciding what would be good to eat and planting the corresponding food plants in beds alongside rows or patches of woodland.

Most books about food forests, woodland gardening, or carbon farming concentrate on the design principles involved. The focus of this book is the plants, their characteristics and personalities, what they have to offer a food forest ecosystem, as well as what kinds of foods they yield.

PFAF has selected over 500 plants that provide a mix of different growing conditions, plant size and structure, type of food, and contribution to a food forest ecosystem.

There is also a quick-reference table of the key characteristics. The featured plants are arranged in sections corresponding to Forest Layer:
  • Shrubs
  • Groundcover Shrubs
  • Trees
  • Herbaceous Plants
  • Herbaceous Groundcover Plants
  • Running Bamboos
  • Bulbs
  • Climbers.
Further details of all the plants described are available from the PFAF Plants Database, which can be accessed FREE of charge at pfaf.orgMore

City girl grows giant urban garden (video)

Kate Lavers (Happen Films, 2/22/19); Kelly Ani in Australia, Ananda (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Inspiring woman grows huge amount of free organic food in a tiny backyard
I can grow my own cherries and invite bees.
"The Plummery" is a suburban home where a tiny urban permaculture garden measuring only 1,076 square feet (100 sq/m) produces over 900 pounds (400 kg) of food year-round.

Kat Lavers describes her approach to home gardening, including vertical and bio-intensive growing. She shows how possible it is for city dwellers to be food resilient in the face of natural, financial, and social crises.

It's inspiring how little day-to-day effort goes into creating an abundance of organic food.

Living Big In A Tiny House(Living Big In A Tiny House) It's hard not to be completely in love with the design and construction of this amazing shipping container home.
