Keep training the heart/mind

Ajahn Fuang via Ven. Sujato; Aloka, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

I will tame the mind by breath control.
We have to keep training the mind/heart in line with the path of practice.

As a result it'll get gradually more familiar with the practice the Buddha taught, bit by bit. It'll keep getting more tractable, malleable, tame, so that it wanders off only occasionally, only once in a long, long while.

It'll rarely get lost. If we were to strap it down too tightly, it might struggle to get away. So we may have to put it on a long leash.

But whether we keep it on a slack or tight leash all depends on which technique we find works for us. The strategies needed for training the heart/mind aren't the same for everyone.

Some people really have to force it, come down hard on it, go without food and water. But it all comes down to whatever works in keeping the mind/heart within its proper bounds.
