The host of Last Week Tonight created a religion. It was a joke, but it was done on purpose. Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption is now a legally recognized parody religion in the United States established by the brilliant comedian and satirist John Oliver.

It was first announced on August 16, 2015, in an episode on televangelism from his TV program Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

The Church's purpose is to spotlight and criticize tele-vangelists, such as Christian hypocrites Kenneth Copeland, Joel "Prosperity Gospel" Osteen, and Robert Tilton, whom Oliver argues use TV broadcasts of Protestant Christian Sunday church services for private gain.

It sounds better than Pastfarianism's Flying Spaghetti Monster god, which is a real religion, too.

Oliver also established Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption to draw attention to the tax-exempt status given to churches.

During his show on September 13, 2015, Oliver announced that the church had received "thousands of dollars" and a variety of other items from viewers and announced that the Church would be shutting down.

The segments and later spinoff segments featured the comedian Rachel Dratch as Oliver's fictional TV wife, Wanda Jo. All donations were given to Doctors Without Borders.

A federal judge has ruled that it is unconstitutional to only force men to register for the draft when they turn 18. While the draft ended in 1973 following the Vietnam War, the MSSA (Military Selective Service Act) still requires all men between the ages of 18 and 25 to register for the draft. In 1981, the Supreme Court ruled that only requiring men to register was constitutional because at that time the military banned women from serving in combat roles. That changed in 2013, and Senior Judge Gray Miller of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas ruled that the government "can no longer justify the MSSA's gender-based discrimination." The lawsuit was filed by the National Coalition for Men, who praised the judges ruling. "Forcing only males to register is an aspect of socially institutionalized male disposability," the group said in a statement. "Men still face prison, fines, and denial of federal loans for not registering or for not updating the government of their whereabouts." Women, it said, "should face the same repercussions as men for any noncompliance."

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyoming - Visitors could still ride snowmobiles and ski into Yellowstone National Park Saturday to marvel at the geysers and buffalo herds, despite the federal government shutdown.

(Jan. 21, 2018) But across the country in New York, the nation's most famous monuments to immigration -- the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island -- were closed. The Interior Department had vowed to keep open as many parks, monuments, and public lands as possible during the shutdown, which began at midnight Friday on the East Coast.

 

By mid-day Saturday, the pattern was spotty, and some visitors were frustrated. "My initial reaction is, they really kind of screwed up our day. We had a great day planned," said Dan O'Meara, a California firefighter who wanted to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

"But the next thing is, you know -- it's troubling that the people we voted in are not doing the job that they're supposed to be doing. So it's very frustrating," he said. In Yellowstone, cross-country skier Carol Weaver was unhappy with lawmakers, even though the trails were open for her and a group of friends making a two-day visit.

 

Weaver, from Bozeman, Montana, worried about what would happen if the impasse is lengthy. "This is our public land, and we should be able to use it any time we want," she said. "Congress better get its act together. They've been so irresponsible the last year, as well as the White House." More

Women [and male allies] rallied around the world Wednesday to mark International Women’s Day. In the United States, it was dubbed "A Day Without a Woman," as organizers called on women to go on strike. 

In Prince George’s County, Maryland [USA], the entire school district closed down after 1,700 teachers asked for the day off. In Virginia, the entire public school system of Alexandria also closed after 300 workers requested the day off.

The Statue of Liberty [also went on strike when it] went dark Tuesday... The darkening also foreshadowed the next day, Wednesday, International Women’s Day, which was organized as a strike this year: “A Day Without a Woman.”

Lady Liberty, who for more than 130 years has proclaimed to the world “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” had disappeared, at least for a few hours, from the New York skyline.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated on March 8th for more than a century, but this year’s global day of action was marked with an added sense of urgency.

The day after Trump’s inauguration, more than 4 million people protested from coast to coast, perhaps the largest political protest in U.S. history.

The Women’s March on Washington alone was three times the size of his inauguration crowd the day before, a fact that clearly enraged the president.

 

Two days later, Trump would sign an executive order imposing a “global gag rule,” which bans U.S. foreign aid to any nongovernmental organization that provides abortion or even talks about it as an option.

Trump is also pressuring lawmakers to pass the Republican bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act [called "Obamacare" by everyone]. The law would strip funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides a broad array of health-care services to more than 2.5 million Americans annually. Only 3 percent of its services are abortion-related, and no federal funding goes to provide abortions.

 

With events in over 50 countries, this year’s women’s strike is the largest in recent history. “March 8th will be the beginning of a new international feminist movement that organizes resistance not just against Trump and his misogynist policies,” the organizers’ website states, “but also against the conditions that produced Trump, namely the decades long economic inequality, racial and sexual violence, and imperial wars abroad.”

Just this week, a leaked document revealed that the Department of Homeland Security is considering a proposal to separate refugee mothers from their children if they are apprehended crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
