Place of 24 hours darkness in Europe

Most depressing island! (24 hours of darkness) Svalbard
(Joe HaTTab) ● Svalbard: The Northernmost Town on Earth ● Come take a walk with me (Joe Hattab) around Longyearbyen, the largest town on the Norwegian islands of Svalbard.

Parts of it look familiar, but make no mistake. This place is different. At 78 degrees north, it lies just 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) from the North Pole. And with over 2,000 permanent inhabitants, it is the northernmost real town on Earth.
There are only 50 km of road, including the small streets between houses, so people mainly get around the island on snowmobile. In fact, there are more registered snowmobiles than residents.

Anyone leaving town is required to travel with a gun and someone who knows how to use it because the islands are also home to polar bears.

The average daytime high is below freezing for all but four months of the year, and from the end of October to mid-February, the sun doesn’t rise at all. This is the long polar night.

Planting Karma Seeds: a Meditation Journey

Planting Wisdom: Karma Reflections and a Meditation Journey
Man, it would be so cool to learn meditation.
Here's a story about reconnecting with my first meditation teacher after nearly two decades.

The focus is on the seeds we plant continuously through our karma (deeds). What kind of seeds are we planting right now?
Beat poet Jack Kerouac
I remember when I first learned how to meditate [by being mindful of] my breath some time in 1990, during my university years.

Back then, meditation was not as well known. The Beat Generation’s Zen trend in the 1960s had died out with disco in the 1970s.

Barnes and Noble had maybe only a few shelves in a single bookcase labeled with “Eastern Philosophy” that covered all Eastern religions, including Buddhism.

Ram Das’s cryptic book Be Here Now was the only book I had read prior to reading my World Religions book, which included a chapter on Buddhism for a class I took.

Be Here Now (Ram Dass for Neem Karoli Baba)
It was different in the early 1990s. There wasn’t a World Wide Web, Google, or even a digital Yahoo. We didn’t have Idiot or Dummy books back then. While there were books out there, you really had to explore a subculture, and you had to know someone in order to know what the subcultures were and where to find them.

Luckily, I had a friend who was into Zen, and he was considering becoming a Catholic priest at the time. He recently transferred from UC Berkeley, not far from San Francisco, which might be called the subculture mecca of the United States, certainly for the "weird" things like meditation. I asked him to teach me. I thought it would be good for me to learn from him.

He agreed and came over to my apartment one night to teach me a lesson I would never forget. I remember we were sitting on the floor of the living room during the lesson. I was thinking about TV’s depiction of meditation and what should be happening. Then I said, “Should I light a candle?” He said, “If you want to, you can.”

“Should I light an incense stick?”

Mindfulness of Breathing, Four Elements Meditation
“If you want to, you can. You can have representations of the Four Elements.”

He explained it to me, but I did not really know what he meant, so I lit a candle and an incense stick to fit my world view of what "meditation" should be like. Before we started, he gave me a little bit of a lesson on the story of the Buddha and how he became enlightened.

He then told me some things about the sitting posture and to press my tongue against the roof of my mouth and to swallow a lot in a natural way. “They say it is good for you,” he said.

Then he taught me how to count my breaths “Zen style.” I would silently and inwardly count the exhales of my breaths one by one until I got up to ten. Then I would count backwards back down to zero. Then up to ten again, and then back to zero. I would repeat these cycles until it was time to stop. If I lost my count, I would just start all over again from “one.”

After our session was over, he left and that was more or less “The Lesson.” After that, I do not know why, but I continued with this practice and other forms of meditation almost every day, more or less for the rest of my life (with some exceptions of course).

Twenty years later, in 2010, I visited Ulpathkanda, Hantanna (Spring Hill Monastery) near Kandy, Sri Lanka, where I was able to use the Internet for the first time in a very long time. I sometimes joked about how I was doing an “Internet retreat” from my full-time life as a forest monk in Na-uyana.

Nevertheless, I was still at a high mountainous jungle forest monastery. I looked up my old friend, my meditation instructor, on the Internet. When we were in college together, he had changed his major from philosophy to whatever one needs to become a Spanish teacher.

It looked as though he had really lived the Spanish lifestyle and moved all over the globe to Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. The Internet kept track of all the different countries he lived in. It is true that “Big Brother is watching,” just like George Orwell warned, so I could now watch with an Internet connection.

After all of that globetrotting, he settled down in a Connecticut town not too far from where he originally taught me how to meditate. I picked up the monastery phone, dialed the phone card codes, then I dialed his number. The phone rang, and a woman’s voice answered the phone. “Hello?”

“Hello, my name is Bhikkhu Subhūti, and I was wondering if a Brett [J.] lives here?”

“Yes, he does.”

“May I speak with him please?”

“Uh, okay,” she said in a cautious voice to the stranger on the phone. Perhaps I was a telemarketer to her. They did not know what to expect. There were muffled voices coming through the phone’s speaker, then eventually the phone was passed to Brett.

“Hello, this is Brett.”

I instantly recognized his voice, which had stayed the same all these years.

Hello, this is Bhikkhu Subhuti (Jeremy Glick)
“Hello, this is Bhikkhu Subhūti. You once knew me as Jeremy Glick from Central. Do you remember me?” (Central is a shorthand name for Central Connecticut State University).

“Yes, I remember you, Jeremy.”

I continued, “A long time ago, you came over my place and taught me how to meditate and how to count my breaths. With a few exceptions, I practiced nearly every day, and my practice grew and grew, and eventually I decided to become a Buddhist monk in 2001. Now my name is ‘Bhikkhu Subhūti.’ I looked you up on the Internet so I could call you and say, ‘Thank you.’”

But, hey, um, hello! I'm Jiminy Glick (Martin Short)
There was a long pause. It was five or six seconds of delay before he spoke, so it seemed long. He finally broke the silence and said, “You know, we never know what will happen to the seeds we have planted long ago.”

I did not expect him to still be a teacher of mine, but those were words of wisdom. We caught up on some old times. He was indeed a Spanish teacher and married a woman from Spain. His brother, who was an electrical engineer, quit the industry and now counts caribou in Alaska for a living.

I told him that I never went into teaching, which was expected at college, so I became a computer programmer instead for about six years before leaving all that behind me.

Times have changed and so did the both of us. I told him that I had my brother make me a Facebook account (with two friends), and although as a schoolteacher he was against Facebook, he thought I might be able use it to do something worthwhile for other people. I did not do much with social networks until last year, but I kept his thoughts in mind.

We talked some more and then we parted. If you ever have a chance to thank someone who has affected your life, I highly recommend it. Often, we do not think we make a difference, but we do, positively and, unfortunately, negatively. We always plant seeds in ourselves and others. Some germinate, while others do not.

Sometimes we believe they are trivial sprouts, but some can grow into towering redwoods. It can change a whole person’s destiny. So always plant happy seeds because, “We never know what will happen to the seeds we have planted long ago.”

Trees: one country gaining forests (video)

Where's the best place to mediate? The forest. But be protected: practice metta first.

Why does this forest look like a fingerprint?
(Vox) Team Vox set out to solve why a forest in the middle of Uruguay, South America, looks like a fingerprint and other odd patterns — and wound up finding something much bigger.
They're just trees. What's the big deal?
Deep in the geographic center of Uruguay, there’s a peculiar group of trees just a few kilometers down the road from the small town of San Gregorio de Polanco.

From the ground, it's not particularly notable. But from above, from a bird or drone's eye view (and particularly on Google Earth), the view is mind-boggling:

Hundreds of trees are arranged in perfect concentric arcs, all spiraling toward the center. Together, they look remarkably like a human fingerprint.

When the team first saw this forest in a Reddit post, it was fascinated.
  • Why had the trees been arranged in this shape?
  • Who planted them there?
  • And why — when one zooms out on satellite view — was the entire country of Uruguay covered in similar-looking forests?
To answer that question, the team went straight to the source: interviewing locals, experts, and people whose lives have been shaped by a transformed landscape and economy.

Fact Check: Did the Buddha use cannabis?

Alejandro (TheHighestCritic, 11/20/20); Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
This cartoonish Fat Happy Buddha is NOT the Buddha of history. He is a bodhisattva named Putai, Budai, or Hotei. He was a kind, jolly, overweight monk who gave candy to children from a bag.
.
Buzznik Alejandro over at TheHighestCritic.com has a question, which he has already answered quite sure that he's right.

Q: Did the Buddha Gautama use cannabis?
Let's examine this Q from the view of a pot leaf
According, to, like, some mystical sutra, Bro, you know, um, Siddhartha, who later became Buddha, used cannabis. He was all Buddhafied! But, check this out, NOT how you would think, not in the traditional sense.

I didn't use weed either. I was a good monk
It's said that prior to his Great Awakening [his Maha Bodhi, which means prior to when he was the Buddha, which means the "Awakened One"], Buddha Siddhartha lived on nothing but a single cannabis seed per day for SIX YEARS! 🤯
  • It's a beautiful legend, and we hope it's true because raw hemp seeds are a superfood, a miracle, a health-wonder full of Omega 3, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids in balance, which is extraordinarily rare in nature. Everyone should eat raw hemp seeds every day. Put them in a blender with pure water, and it's an instant healthy white nut-milk with no other ingredients necessary.
What’s interesting about this, is that cannabis only receives slight reference in Buddhist legends even though it is rather significant to the religion.
  • This is because it is not significant to the religion or the PRACTICE of the Ennobling (Enlightening) Eightfold Path the religion teaches. In fact, the only thing we can think of relating cannabis bud, flower, dab (hash exudations), or the plant as an entheogenic drug, has to do with Buddhism is that the Buddha was a Scythian (Shakyan) from neighboring Gandhara (now Afghanistan, nearby but not in magical Nepal, which is high in the Himalayas) from the foothills of the Hindu Kush, which is part of the Himalayan range, far to the west of Nepal. The Scythians were originally nomadic wandering in Central Asia before settling and adopting an agrarian way of life. They did not drink ordinary alcohol. They drank a special kind made of fermented mare's milk. A mare is a female horse, and the low-grade alcohol made from natural yeast falling on lactose and souring it makes a kind of less addictive alcohol than toxic grain-based alcohol. The Scythians had a drink called soma (haoma) into which they put cannabis to make a kind of mundane ambrosia (amrita). Some may have been a general name because the real stuff seems to have been the entheogen blue lotus, a DMT-type substance also popular in ancient Egypt. It's hard to imagine that Siddhartha, a prince of a Scythian group called the Sakas raised watching dancing girls and musicians, would never have tried it. Cannabis grows wild throughout the foothills, where it originated as a plant.
Prince Sidhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha Gautama, lived in Lumbini in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, a region that’s rich in cultivated and naturally occurring Cannabis indica known as Nepali Indica.
  • Prince Sid, who became "The Buddha" by virtue of his spiritual awakening at the age of 35 after six or seven years of intensive endeavor on his quest to discover why we suffer and what can be done about it, was born in Lumbini Garden but he never lived there. He was raised in Kapilavastu (which Dr. Ranajit Pal has demonstrated must have been in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, and its environs, which we feel safe to speculate were Mes Aynak and Kabul (Kabil, Kapil, Kapilavastu) because he lived in three different places, three seasonal capitals that relocated by season, hot, cold, and rainy. He awoke to the Truth. There is no record of him smoking or consuming cannabis to get high or anything else. If the seed was eaten as a food, he might have eaten it but only if it were provided to him as he was a wandering ascetic living on alms, having gone East to proto-India, just south of Nepal, in his pursuit of enlightenment.
As the story goes, Siddhartha the wandering ascetic (doing tapas or extreme austerities and self-mortifications as misguided penance to compensate for this anti-spiritual body, a common practice among yogis) became so weak because of excessive fasting, that he resumed eating because a woman named Sujata and her maid offered him food.

He recovered his strength and realized the body is not a hindrance to spirituality. In fact, it can be a vehicle to it. His strength and health regained, he began his legendary meditation under the Bodhi tree.
  • It is called the Bodhi tree because bodhi means "enlightenment" or "awakening." Prior to his great awakening, it was not called that. The tree (Ficus religiosa, a giant pipal tree, which is like a banyan) drops tons of fruit, small figs that are not eaten (and who knows why because they are delicious and nutritious) except as a resource during famine. Religious studies teachers in the US note that the chemical composition of these figs is one molecule different from acid, LSD. The implication being, Wouldn't he have eaten these under that tree and otherwise fasting because he was not getting up to go on alms. And though no one was offering this food, the Tree was. He called on the Earth, in the earth-witnessing mudra, to vouch for him. We know trees have dryads. That's why he was fed by Sujata. She and her maid were making offerings to the tree spirit near their house as she wanted to get pregnant. She became pregnant, and this was the big offering in gratitude. Seeing him with his long hair, possibly in dreads from not washing it, they mistook him for spirit of the tree.

Esoteric Secrets of Semen Retention🪬

(Fooladi Fitness) The practice of semen retention (SR) goes far beyond the general surface level self-improvement stuff we see online.

Celibacy (brahmacharya) is a limb of Raja Yoga.
This sacred art of inner alchemy has been widely talked about in many great ancient texts by mystics [talking about the Spirit Molecule DMT or amrita, ambrosia, soma and haoma, lifeforce energy called prana, which moves as ida and pingala of kundalini, anointment or the Kristos (the "Anointed One") Gnostic version] and philosophers of the past through art and allegorical symbolism.

Anointing of Jesus (Jan van Scorel)
As we begin to decode the deeper esoteric secrets of this practice, we come to realize how truly profound this sacred secretion is when it comes to uncovering the more metaphysical secrets of this reality while on the road to self-mastery...

Tribal Elders speak on ET origins: Star People

UFOTV®; Xochitl, Pat Macpherson, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The Star People are real.
This fascinating documentary was created by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Bill Cote, who brought us The Mystery of the Sphinx, The Mysterious Origins of Man, and The Mysterious Stone Monuments of Markawasi Peru, which are all available for viewing at UFOTV® on YouTube.

In this film exploration, Native American tribal elders speak out for the first time about their secret knowledge of the "Star People," knowledge that has been passed down for thousands of years.

It was revealed in a dream among the Elders that now is the time for the tribes to break their silence and share their hidden knowledge of the Star People: visitors from other worlds.

In this film we meet people with firsthand experience of ETs, hear amazing stories of the unknown, and witness for ourselves a mysterious event that occurred in the skies, which was for some a visible sign from the Star People that we are not alone.
What are "Star People"?

March against Monsanto (video)

Wisdom Quarterly, Los Angeles (facebook); Occupy-Monsanto.com; RT.com, worldwide
  .
What if people behaved like Monsanto?
Amid accusations that Monsanto enjoys protection from authorities, a recent report shows that the US government (and Pres. Obama personally) has been aggressively lobbying for deadly genetically modified (GM) foods and seeds across the world. RT America correspondent Megan Lopez reports.
List of protest sites (occupy-monsanto.com)

The worldwide March Against Monsanto will see hundreds of thousands of peaceful demonstrators (and a few agent provocateurs inserted by various police departments with generous donations from various business-friendly entities) in 40 countries UNITE to challenge the planet-destroying biotechnology corporation. People are protesting genetically modified foods, which despite bans in some European countries due to demonstrated health hazards, remain legal in many others. More
