There are no gay Baptists; LGBT ban

Emotions were high throughout the third and final day of the UMC (United Methodist Convention) meeting. Some supporters of greater LGBT (lesbian gay bi trans) inclusion were in tears, while others vented their anger when, midway through the session, delegates defeated a proposal that would have let regional and local church bodies decide for themselves on gay-friendly policies.

 

"Devastation," was how former Methodist pastor Rebecca Wilson of Detroit described her feelings. "As someone who left because I'm gay, I'm waiting for the church I love to stop bringing more hate."

After several more hours of debate, the conservatives' proposal, called the Traditional Plan, was approved by a vote of 438-384. Opponents unsuccessfully sought to weaken the plan with hostile amendments or to prolong the debate past a mandatory adjournment time set to accommodate a monster truck rally in the arena. One delegate even requested an investigation into the possibility that "vote buying" was taking place at the conference.

 

The Traditional Plan's success was due to an alliance of conservatives from the U.S. and overseas. About 43 percent of the delegates were from abroad, mostly from Africa, and overwhelmingly supported the LGBT bans.

If the bans were eased, "the church in Africa would cease to exist," said the Rev. Jerry Kulah of Liberia. "We can't do anything but to support the Traditional Plan — it is the biblical plan." More

Why? I need my cellphone! Drivers with cellphones kill thousands of innocent people every year, way more than "assault weapons." Really?

President Trump’s lawyers sent a letter to former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon on Wednesday night, insisting he stop making derogatory comments about Trump and his family.

 

The letter comes after excerpts from a forthcoming book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff, were published Wednesday and featured unflattering comments from Bannon about the Trump family.

Bannon along with other staffers in Trump's campaign had signed nondisclosure agreements requiring them to not make any derogatory comments toward Trump, his family, the campaign, or the Trump Organization.

“You [Bannon] have breached the Agreement by, among other things, communicating with author Michael Wolff about Mr. Trump, his family members, and the Company [the campaign], disclosing Confidential Information to Mr. Wolff, and making disparaging statements and in some cases outright defamatory statements to Mr. Wolff about Mr. Trump, his family members,” Trump attorney Charles Harder wrote in the letter.

 

The letter, first reported by ABC News, says “remedies for your breach of the agreement include but are not limited to monetary damages.” However, an amount is not disclosed.

 

In the excerpts published Wednesday, Bannon alleged that Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer in June 2016 was "treasonous" and "unpatriotic," and said Trump’s daughter Ivanka was as “dumb as a brick,” among other things.

 

Trump fired back.

 

"Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind," Trump said in a statement on Wednesday. "Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating seventeen candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party."

 

“Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn’t as easy as I make it look,” the statement added. “Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. Yet Steve had everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans. Steve doesn’t represent my base — he’s only in it for himself.” More

Travel ban arguments focus on Trump's comments about Muslims

RICHMOND, Virginia - A challenge to Don Trump's revised travel ban appears to hinge on whether a federal appeals court agrees that the fascistic Republican's past anti-Muslim/Islam statements can be used against him.

 

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals wrestled Monday with whether the court should look beyond the text of the executive order to comments made by Trump and his aides on the campaign trail and after his election in order to determine whether the policy illegally targets Muslims.

"That's the most important issue in the whole case," said Judge Robert King, who was appointed to the court by Pres. Bill Clinton. The panel of 13 judges peppered both sides with tough questions but gave few clues as to how they might rule. The judges did not immediately issue a decision on Monday.

 

A federal judge in Maryland who blocked the travel ban in March cited Trump's comments as evidence that the executive order is a realization of his repeated promise to bar Muslims from entering the country. More

After years of a legal battle, Penguin Books India, a division of Penguin Random House, has agreed to pull its book, The Hindus: An Alternative History from Indian bookstores.
 

The history book, which its author [Harvard, Oxford Indologist] Wendy Doniger has described as an alternative, Howard Zinn-esque version of the history of Hinduism, has been accused of denigrating Hindus and Hindu [Brahminical Vedic] traditions.

“It tells an aspect of the history of Hinduism that is unpleasant for a certain type of Hindu, what I would call a fundamentalist Hindu, to accept,” said Doniger, who is a professor of history of religion at the University of Chicago.

The lawsuit against Doniger and Penguin was filed by Dinanath Batra, a leader of the conservative Hindu group, Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti.
 
Among their specific accusations is that the book wrongly includes a map of India that excludes Kashmir, the subject of a territorial dispute with neighboring Pakistan. [Hey, Doniger, even we think it's going too far!
