Tsunami Relief with Linkin Park (video)

Mike Shinoda, co-singer for Linkin Park (a very successful LA-based rock band), launched a massive effort to provide relief to Japan in the wake of its triple disaster. Large earthquakes continue a month later, smaller tsunamis still roll in, and the radioactive fallout is being scattered over the entire planet. (Thank you, HAARP harpists bent on reducing the world's population as they run to safe shelter in underground bunkers). Shinoda has created tee shirts, released a downloadable instrumental track called "We're All in This Together" (Issho Ni) by the band as well as other tracks by other bands as a gift for donating. For those not familiar with the band, this is their current hit, "Waiting for the End," an apparent follow up to their previous hit "In the End."

Charitable Contributions Drop, But Not Dramatically

Charitable giving reached an estimated $307.65 billion in the United States in 2008 — a 2 percent drop from the previous year (npr.org/news/graphics).

(NPR) Charitable giving declined last year, along with the economy. But it didn't go down by as much as some people had thought, according to a new report out Wednesday. [But giving to religious organizations seemed to be up.]

Charitable giving in the United States dropped 2 percent in 2008 from the year before. Even so, people gave more than $307 billion, which begs the question: Is this good news or bad news?

"I think $300 billion-plus — two years in a row — is great news," said Nancy Raybin, chair of the Giving Institute, whose Giving USA Foundation reports annually on charitable trends.

She said that after the stock market tumbled last September, people expected the worst. "People expected that as the economy tanked, charitable giving would tank along with it," Raybin said. "And that didn't happen. It may have happened to some organizations, but it didn't happen to every organization across the country." More>>

We will include simple actions that you and your guests can take, such as petitions to sign, and we will even send you Burmese recipes so you can serve a Burmese lunch or dinner if you’d like to.

We are asking that you also use your event as a small fundraiser to help our efforts to free Aung San Suu Kyi and all the people of Burma.
