The Big One: California quake (sutra)

The Buddha said there are eight reasons for earthquakes, when the might plane of the earth (Bhumi, Gaia, Tierra, Urth) trembles and shakes. What could these eight reasons be? Surely, there have to be hundreds of reasons (disruption of the elements) or just one (tectonic plate movement). But the Buddha assures us there are eight. What are they? It's not worth mentioning, since most modern readers will not believe, falling into the realm of superstition. But there is one awe-inspiring reason given, which paints our position in the cosmos or multiverse in an amazing way in line with Buddhist, Hindu (Vedic), and Jain cosmologies about what our "planet" is and what it rests on.

SUTRA: “The Final Journey

Soon after Māra departed, the Buddha entered a samādhi [an absorption] of serene (settled, still, absorbed) mind at Cāpāla Shrine, relinquishing his lifeforce.

Right at that moment there was a great earthquake, and everyone in the entire country was startled and frightened by it followed by goosebumps. The Buddha then emanated a great radiance. There was nowhere that it did not illuminate. Even the darkest places were made bright, and the beings there saw each other. The Blessed One (Bhagavān) then spoke in verse:

“Two formations, being and nonbeing,
I now let go of those conditioned states.
Focused in samādhi and settled,
I’m like a bird emerging from its egg.”

It was difficult for Venerable Ānanda to think because he was so startled with goosebumps. He hurried to the Buddha, bowed at his feet, withdrew to stand respectfully to one side, and said: “Bhagavān, how strange it is! What was the reason for that earthquake?”

The Buddha told Ānanda: “An earthquake usually has eight causes. What are those eight?
  1. The earth rests on water. Where the water stops, there’s air. Where the air stops, there’s space. Sometimes a great gale rises by itself in that empty space, which creates a large wave in the water. That large wave of water then makes the whole earth tremble. That is one cause.
  2. “Sometimes a monk, nun, great spirit, sage, or exalted deva achieves awakening and observes how much water there is and how little earth there is. Wanting to test his, her, or its power and makes the whole earth shake. This is the second cause.
  3. “When a bodhisattva’s spirit (gandhabba) first descends from Tuṣita Heaven into his mother’s womb while focused and undisturbed, there is a great earthquake. This is the third cause.
  4. “When a bodhisattva first emerges from his mother’s womb, he is born from her side while focused and conscious, and the whole earth quakes. This is the fourth cause.
  5. “At the moment a bodhisattva first achieves unsurpassed (supreme) and perfect awakening, there is a great earthquake. This is the fifth cause.
  6. “When a buddha first achieves awakening and turns the unsurpassed Dharma wheel, which cannot be set in motion by [devas such as Śakra and Brahmā,] or Māra, demons, and spirits, or wandering ascetics and Brahmin priests, or ordinary worldly people and devas, then the whole earth quakes. This is the sixth cause.
  7. “When a Buddha’s Teaching is nearing its end and he relinquishes his lifeforce while focused and undisturbed, the whole earth quakes. This is the seventh cause.
  8. “Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Tathāgata (Wayfarer) attains final nirvana (parinirvāṇa) without remainder, there is a great earthquake. This is the eighth cause.
“These are the eight reasons that lead to an earthquake.” The Buddha then spoke in verse:

“The unsurpassed sage of two-footed beings,
He’s a great ascetic who lights up the world.
Ānanda asked the teacher of devas,
‘What is the reason for this earthquake?’

The Tathāgata explained it in a kind voice
That sounded like a kalaviṅka.
‘I will say to all, so listen:
There are these causes of earthquakes.

The earth depends on water, which remains.
Water depends on air, which abides.
If a wind rises in that space,
Then the earth is shaken greatly.

Sometimes, a monk or nun
Wants to test his or her miraculous power.
The mountains, oceans, grasses, and trees,
The whole earth is shaken.

Śakra, Brahmā, and the venerable devas
Sometimes want to shake the earth.
Demons and spirits of mountains and oceans
Also make the earth quake.

When bodhisattvas and two-footed sages,
Replete with a hundred signs of merit,
First enter their mother’s womb,
Then the earth is shaken greatly.

They dwell in the womb for ten [lunar] months
Like nāgas (reptilians, dragons) lying on a mat.
When they first emerge from her right side,
Then the earth is shaken greatly.

When the Buddha was a young man
He eliminated the conditions that fettered him,
Achieved awakening supreme and measureless,
Then the earth was shaken greatly.

Become a sage, he turned the Dharma Wheel
There in the Deer Preserve.
When he defeated Māra with awakening’s strength,
Then the earth was shaken greatly.

The deva Māra came to press his request,
Urging the Buddha to final nirvāṇa.
When the Buddha relinquished his lifeforce,
Then the earth was shaken greatly.

The worthy human, the great teacher,
The miraculous sage ended future rebirths.
He was hard to move but chose to go out,
And the earth was shaken greatly.

The pure eye explained these reasons,
These eight situations that cause earthquakes.
When there is this, there is also that;
These are the occasions of earthquakes.”

Buddhism on the causes of great earthquakes

Ven. Sujato Bhikkhu (trans.) Mahāparinibbāna Sutta (DN 16), suttacentral.net; edited and expanded by Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, and Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly

Mistranslated Buddha quote. (See Dhammapada)
In Buddhist texts, the Buddha gave eight causes of great (massive) earthquakes, the first so general that it could account for all of them:

[The Buddha:] “Ānanda, there are these eight causes and reasons for a great earthquake. What are the eight? This great earth is grounded on water, the water is grounded on air, and the air stands in space. At a time when a great wind blows, it stirs the water, and the water stirs the earth.”
  • So far as it goes, this is a naturalistic explanation: The “water element” has the quality of [cohesion and] softening, while the “air element” is traditionally understood as “movement” [or flow]. Thus, in modern terms this [could mean], “When underground forces disturb a region of instability...”
“This is the first cause and reason for a great earthquake.”
  • (WQ) In Buddhism the four great "elements," dhatus or mahābhūta, are NOT really material "things," but rather qualities and characteristics of material things. (In Hinduism, they seem to be actual things). And those "material things" are called the rupa-kalapas (material particles or "atoms" in the original ancient Greek sense; in fact, it seems that the ancient Greeks got the idea of "atoms," or the smallest indivisible building blocks of materiality, from Buddhism and the Dharmic religions).
  • See Bhikkhu Bodhi (trans.) MN 140: "The Discourse on the Analysis of the Elements" or Dhātu Vibhaṅga Sutta (suttacentral.net)
  • The Four Great Elements refer to about 14 characteristics. (See the enlightened master Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw's Four Elements Meditation to learn to discern them in this human body. It is so shockingly simple when described that it might throw one off. But if one persists in earnest practice, what was "simple" shows itself to be very difficult to master. That is, to attain absorption (jhana) using these characteristics as the object of focus until they become clear and wieldy is simple but not easy. With success, all doubt vanishes, and the profundity of the Buddha's liberating message becomes clear: These four elements are impersonal, impermanent, and disappointing; they are no basis for an eternal "self" or any kind of stable material world. That is why the self (atta or atman) and the world (material form) are always in flux.
  • The Four Great Elements are sometimes spoken of with three more, making for seven elements: earth (patthavi), water (apa), fire (teja), air (vayu); space (akasha), mind (vinñāna); and the unique "unconditioned-element" (asankhata-dhatunirvana.
“Furthermore, there is a wandering ascetic or Brahmin (temple priest) with psychic powers who has achieved mastery of the mind, or a shining one (deva) who is mighty and powerful. They’ve developed a limited perception of earth and a limitless perception of water. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble. This is the second cause and reason for a great earthquake.
  • The might of wandering ascetics was legendary in ancient India (e.g., MN 56:14.2). The meditation described here might be compared with the “dimensions of mastery” below (DN 16:3.25.1).
“Furthermore, when the being-intent-on-awakening [the Bodhisatta or Future-Buddha] passes away from the host of Joyful Devas [in the Tusita World], he is conceived of in his mother’s womb, mindful and aware. Then the earth shakes and rocks and trembles. This is the third cause and reason for a great earthquake....”
  • At DN 14:1.17.7 and MN 123:7.6 it is, rather, the entire galaxy [world-system or cakkavala] that trembles, perhaps indicating that the enhanced miracle is a later development [inserted into the embellished texts]. More
A disturbance in the Force

The Buddha was onto something
For the big tsunami that hit Aceh, Indonesia (2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami), Banda Aceh in particular, Western psychic Stewart Swerdlow (expansions.com) very clearly gave the unnatural reason for it.

He told us directly at Bodhi Tree Bookstore Annex in West Los Angeles, if we're remembering correctly:

The powers-that-be, that is, the military-industrial complex scientists working for covert alphabet agencies like the CIA, NSA, and NSC were trying to operate the Montauk chair, and this was causing a great disturbance.

A Disturbance in the Force (2023) - IMDb
Disturbance to what? Disturbance to the earth, water, air, and space this world is founded on. "The Force" is Star Wars speak for "Source" or "The All" that connects us like split particles bound by some force that sends information faster than the speed of light.

Shake the elements and one shakes the planet, our bhumi or platform. One may even shake the entire world-system (cakkavala) we are in.

In Buddhist cosmology, this plane we are on is bound by concentric mountainous walls, separating worlds from worlds, four or seven (Vedic Hinduism says seven) alongside each other, each with their own sun and moon (small nearby satellites of equal size), orbiting above each world within the system.

No doubt, we humans (at least those of us working for covert agencies inside black budget laboratories) are disturbing multiple neighboring dimensions.
It's natural, Honey. Just breathe it in.
When there were great quakes in China and Iran, people reported seeing strange HAARP phenomena in the sky; some even filmed it and put it on YouTube. Who knows how long it could stay posted before YouTube dutifully took it down due to some pretext of a violation when powerful parties request removal of anything for "national security."

Move along. Nuthin to see here, just condensation
"Buddha clouds" (iridescent petroleum-like colors) or isolated rainbow-colored mist from chemtrails, used in conjunction with HAARP technology, are characteristic of massive quakes to come.  Why? In general, HAARP heats up the air in space, disturbing the water and earth. Look up. What are they spraying?

Earthquake hits heart of Buddha's homeland

Amber Larson and Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly, Wiki edit
Map showing area of the 2023 Badakhshan earthquake (Wikipedia)
The Monks of the Mines: The luxurious life of Prince Siddhartha of Bamiyan, Afghanistan

Afghan Buddha (Gandharan Buddhist art)
The future Buddha, Prince Siddhartha Gautama of the Shakya (Saka) clan was born and raised in and around modern Afghanistan -- in ancient Kapilavastu, three seasonal capitals, two of which were certainly Bamiyan (according to Dr. Ranajit Pal), Kabul (Kapil), and we speculate Mes Aynak, now the site of the world's largest unexcavated Buddhist temple complex of the extent of about one square mile (soon to be razed by a Chinese mining interest to extract copper and rare earth elements for profit, much as the US is doing in selling National Forest land to a mining company to raze sacred Native American sites at Oak Flat, Arizona (apache-stronghold.com). This would make the Buddha Shakyamuni, Scythian "Sage of the Shakyas," a blue eyed, black haired, fair golden skinned Central Asian in the Middle Country between Asia and Europe in what is now referred to as the Stans.

2023 Badakhshan Earthquake

On March 21, 2023, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan [ancient "Shakya Land," Kapilavastu, Gandhara, Sakastan, Central Asia], with an intermediate depth of approximately 187 km (116 mi) [1].

The epicenter of the earthquake was 40 km (25 miles) south-southeast of Jurm [1].

Tectonic setting

The Himalayas [as this area of the Hindu Kush is part of the Himalayan range], partially formed by the collision of tectonic plates, are prone to devastating earthquakes.

Afghanistan is situated near the southern extent of the Eurasian Plate [2] in Central Asia next to the subcontinent.

Most of these earthquakes are associated with reverse, thrust, or strike-slip faulting. Large earthquakes with magnitudes of up to 7.5 have occurred in the region with an average recurrence interval of 15 years.

Kapilavastu: Bamiyan, Kabul, Mes Aynak (Shakya Land)
These earthquakes correspond to reverse faulting at a depth of 170 to 280 km (110 to 170 miles) [3]. These earthquakes, rather than occurring at a plate boundary, are sourced from within the Indian Plate as it dives beneath the Hindu Kush [mountains].

As the tectonic slab of the Indian Plate descends at a near-vertical angle into the mantle, it stretches and begins to "tear," eventually leading to a slab detachment [4]. This action results in stress accommodation along faults that produces earthquakes when ruptured.

Smaller shallow focus earthquakes are also observed in the region, particularly associated with north–south trending zones of right lateral strike-slip, such as the Chaman Fault, with an increasing degree of shortening to the north, together accommodating the highly oblique convergence between the Indian and the Eurasian Plates [5].

Earthquake

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude of Mww 6.5 [1], while the Pakistan Meteorological Department said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 [6].

The earthquake was initially reported inaccurately as Mw 7.7 [7]. Shaking was felt over an area 1,000 km (620 miles) wide by approximately 285 million people in Pakistan, India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre [8].

Impact
Afghanistan

At least 10 people were killed [9], 80 others were injured [10], and more than 665 houses were destroyed in nine provinces of Afghanistan [11, 12]. Two people died, 25 others were injured, and 22 houses collapsed in Laghman Province [13, 14, 15].

In Takhar Province, 20 buildings collapsed, one person died, and five others were injured [16, 17]. In Panjshir Province, three buildings were seriously damaged, and three people were injured [17].

In Badakhshan Province, where the epicenter of the earthquake was located, one person was injured, 70 buildings were destroyed, and 50 were damaged [18, 19].

In Kabul Province [ancient Kapil'vastu], one person died and one house was destroyed [11]. Five houses collapsed in Nangarhar Province [15].

Pakistan

Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Quetta, and Peshawar [20]. In Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a teenager was killed from a collapsing wall and a police station was damaged [8, 21].

Two people also died due to a wall collapse in the district [22], while a falling wall killed another child [23]. In Swat District, there were power outages, severe damage, and 250 injuries. More

What causes earthquakes? (video)

The Buddha explained the various causes of earthquakes, and he also explained HOW TO MEDITATE. Why meditation? What's so great about sitting down cross legged? "Meditation" is not sitting down in that famous pose. It is an internal state that can be experienced in any position. It is replete with bliss, calm, peace, and ultimately with liberating-insight. We'll explain how. Hugs given. Refreshments served. More

Eight Causes of Mighty Earthquakes
Helmuth Hecker, edited by Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly
The Buddha now dismissed the idea of carrying on (surviving) for an entire kappa (normally "aeon" but also meaning a "normal lifespan" appropriate to that time in the greater cycle or mahakappa/mahakalpa).

He had to specifically let go of this possibility, as it seems to have been the norm for a buddha to carry on for a full lifespan.

When the Awakened One relinquished the will to carry on, there arose a great earthquake and thunder resounded, such was the powerful effect on the elements when he renounced them as a basis for life.

When Ananda became aware of the quake and thunder, he asked the Buddha for their cause. The Buddha replied that there were eight reasons for earthquakes:

1. There are occasions when great forces move, this is the first reason.
  • ["Ananda, this great earth is established on liquid, the liquid on atmosphere, and atmosphere on space. When mighty atmospheric disturbances take place, the liquid is agitated. And with the agitation of the liquid, tremors of the earth arise. This is the first reason, the first cause for the arising of mighty earthquakes" - Sr. Vajira and Francis Story (trans.), DN 16.]
2. Or a wandering ascetic or Brahmin may possess supernormal power and have reached a certain kind of meditation (depth of concentration/jhana), that is the second reason.
  • ["Ananda, when a wandering ascetic or Brahmin of great power, one who has gained mastery of this mind, or a deva who is mighty and potent, develops intense concentration on the delimited aspect of the earth element and to a boundless degree on the liquid element, that person, too, causes the earth to tremble, quiver, and shake. This is the second reason, the second cause for the arising of mighty earthquakes" - Sr. Vajira and Francis Story, DN 16.]
The last six concern the:
  • 3. conception,
  • 4. final rebirth,
  • 5. enlightenment,
  • 6. the setting in motion the Wheel of the Dharma,
  • 7. relinquishing the will to carry on, and
  • 8. the final nirvana (parinirvana) of a buddha.

One can see from this how deeply connected a buddha, the highest of all beings, is with the whole cosmos.

The expositions that follow on eight kinds of assemblies, eight fields of mastery, and eight liberations seem quite unmotivated in this context. It appears to be one of those occasions for a spontaneously arisen discourse.

Scholars speak about insertions into the text because at first there were eight reasons for earthquakes, then three other “eights” were brought in.

In reality there is a deeper connection, designed to bring Ananda from the superficial to the profound and to let him know the quickly approaching final passing of the Buddha in such a way that it would not disturb him.

After the Buddha had helped to direct Ananda on the path towards enlightenment, he related how he had told Mara 45 years ago that he would not attain final nirvana until the Dharma was well established.

Now Mara had appeared before him and he had told him he would carry on only for another three months. Therefore, he had now relinquished the will to carry on. That had been the reason for the earthquake. More

Kim Kardashian and Kanye's magic baby

Bela, Boo, and CC Liu, Wisdom Quarterly; Zergnet.com; Izismile.com; OMG!/Yahoo.com
Future: rapper Kanye West and super "reality" star Kim Kardashian (zergnet.com)

The Twitter-verse exploded on Saturday when news came that America's royal baby -- the first-born daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West -- had arrived! Of course, "Kim Kardashian" has been the top trending term for the majority of the day on Twitter. While there have been no updates yet about baby KimYe's arrival on the Twitter accounts of either West or any of the Kardashian clan members, [self-promoting] momager Kris Jenner posted a photo [but not of the baby, no, for that there will be a big payday] Saturday morning of "behind the scenes magic" from her new talk show. More
Why did the baby come early?
(COMMENTARY)
Kids are awesome; the Earth quakes when each is born
Kanye and Kim's Kimye came on the day before Father's Day. Why? This is probably Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva (or Kali's) way of helping slightly self-absorbed Kanye remember that he has a kid. He should have known what he was getting into when he intentionally joined the Kardashian (reality TV) clan. It's awesome. Of course, this may be more E.T. star child (Buddhist "deva") than human -- as evidenced by Kim's preternatural beauty and Kanye's perplexing lyrics alongside Katy Perry during her best and most revelatory song.

What could this super baby look like?

Mexico hit by eerily massive earthquake

N.K.G. Mendis; Ven. Karunananda; Wisdom Quarterly

Major 7.6 earthquake shakes Mexico A strong temblor (later said to be 7.4) on the Pacific coast sends buildings swaying as far away as Mexico City. Indonesia is hit by a 6.2 quake (no tsunami). A tornado hits Texas. And the Southern US is being slammed by storms.
Who causes earthquakes? "Uh, shouldn't that be what causes earthquakes?" You would think. But we already know that. The Buddha long ago gave eight reasons for the trembling of the Earth. Then as now technology existed that was so advanced that it could modify weather, alter the seasons, and even shake the world to its core (the other world within the globe we live on the surface of).

"Wait, it's too much! Are you telling me that we can modify the weather and, say, cause it to rain? Impossible! Why would we ever have droughts?"

Well, for one thing, many nations, entities, and let's call them principalities have such technology. They compete. One attacks the other with them. The US used them in Vietnam before it resorted to Agent Orange, Napalm, or what was essentially jellied gasoline used as an environmentally toxic defoliant, which is still causing higher cancer rates there after all these years.

() HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Reasearch Program) is used for weather modification, mind control, and as an SDI (Star Wars Defense Initiative) weapon of the US and the larger MIC (military-industrial complex). It is is capable of creating hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and mood shifts.

The US/MIC would sometimes cause nine feet of rain in an hour, an unheard of outpouring over the jungle. It is as if they were akasha devas ("sky gods" of lore) manipulating things only "God" or natural forces (five natural laws in Buddhist Abhidharma called the five niyamas) are thought to control.

  1. Physical inorganic law (utu-niyama) governs impersonal processes working through variations in temperature to bring about changes in the body and the outer world. In the body it governs decay and illness, in the outer world wind and rain, the regular sequence of seasons, differences of climate, and so on.
  2. Physical organic law (bija-niyama) operates in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms to account for heredity, genetics, and the tendency of like to beget like.
  3. Law of karma (kamma-niyama) is the regular (predictable, lawful) results of volitional action -- whether bodily, verbal, or strictly mental -- producing results appropriate to themselves. There are no "rewards" or "punishments" meted out by some overseer but an inherent consequence in actions themselves with wholesome ones coming to fruition in pleasing, welcome, profitable ways and unwholesome ones ripening in unhappiness.
  4. Law of mind (citta-niyama) governs the order of consciousness and mental/heart processes and also makes possible such feats as telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, clairaudience, and the conscious recollection of past lives.
  5. Law of dharma (dhamma-niyama) accounts for the phenomena that occur at the last birth of a bodhisattva (a being "bent on full enlightenment") and also events during the life and at the passing of buddhas.

String of Earthquakes is No Coincidence

Wisdom Quarterly

The "Weather Wars," as America attacks every adversary on Earth and just a few strike back, are on. How quickly we forget New Zealand, Indonesia, Sharon Stone's China, Japan with the added bonus of an ongoing nuclear holocaust... We have seen video of Iran secretly being attacked by the HAARP weapon. And each of the major quakes shows HAARP's signature minutes (celestial formations) before disaster. Do we really need Jesse Ventura to spell it out?

What if Washington DC or New York City were ever to be attacked by modern Tesla earthquake-producing equipment? Impossible? It might happen. At least we would know it was unnatural and not the result of ordinary meteorological events. What if massive storms were to tear through the East Coast, or droughts and floods were to sweep the nation, would we then pay attention? Probably not. But it could happen. And when it does, will expanded consciousness arise saying, "Hey, something's going on here, something fishy, like these massive fish kills" [which are the result of extraordinary electrical strikes, poison testing, and the general disregard multinational energy companies show for the planet.]

"Energy exploration" is a euphemism that means oil drilling and frac-extracting. Fracking in particular is a menace. Extremely toxic chemical are injected under high pressure into the earth. The result is seismic activity in places that rarely if ever sees any. Virginia, for example.

But there are also other ways to degrade the environment. There are "always" quakes, it is said. This is deceptive. There are not always massive temblors in strategic areas, and there is not always large scale destruction, and these demonstration quakes are not otherworldly retribution. It's war. Many are manmade while reputable scientists remain in the dark about what is possible through Pentagon magic and advanced research divisions like DARPA.

HAARP: Military Earthquake Machine (video)

() If one doubts that the US would purposely devastate Japan with a series of earthquakes, history says otherwise. The US purposely dropped two nuclear bombs on civilians with the objective of murdering hundreds of thousands of noncombatants, utterly destroying their country, and demonstrating supreme power for all the world to fear.

Is there a "machine" that can cause earthquakes? There is more than one.

The United States has three ionospheric heating facilities: HAARP, HIPAS (near Fairbanks, Alaska), and Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) operates an ionospheric heating facility capable of transmitting over 1 GW (1,000,000,000 watts) effective radiated power (ERP), near Tromsø in Norway.

Russia has the Sura ionospheric heating facility, in Vasilsursk near Nizhniy Novgorod, capable of transmitting 190 MW ERP.

There is another site operated by a military subcontractor under an arrangement between the US and Canadian governments. It is located near Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada (N46° 38.649' W53° 9.010'). Since this site originally had minimal to no grid power available, it may be a passive listening post for transmissions emitted by other HAARP sites.

In August 2002, further support for those critical of HAARP technology came from the State Parliament (Duma) of Russia. The Duma published a report on HAARP written by its International Afairs and Defense Committees. It was signed by 90 deputies and presented to President Vladimir Putin.

The report claimed that "the U.S. is creating new integral geophysical weapons that may influence the near-Earth medium with high-frequency radio waves... The significance of this qualitative leap could be compared to the transition from cold steel to firearms, or from conventional weapons to nuclear weapons. This new type of weapons differs from previous types in that the near-Earth medium becomes at once an object of direct influence and its component."

However, given the timing of the Russian intervention, it is possible that it was related to a controversy at the time concerning the US withdrawal in June 2002 from the Russian-American Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

This high level concern is paralleled in the April 1997 statement by the U.S. Secretary of Defense over the power of such electromagnetic weaponry.

Russia owns and operates an ionospheric heater system as powerful as HAARP called Sura, located roughly 150 km from the city of Nizhny Novgorod.

The objectives of HAARP became the subject of controversy in the mid-1990s, following claims that the antennas could be used as a weapon.

A small group of American physicists aired complaints in scientific journals such as Physics and Society. They charged that the HAARP project could be seeking ways to destroy or disable enemy spacecraft or disrupt communications over large portions of the planet.

The physicist-critics were not complaining about the project's initial stages. They were expressing fears that HAARP could be expanded into a weapon. That this is where it was headed was apparent by its funding. It was coming from the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

These concerns were amplified by Bernard Eastlund, a physicist who developed some of the concepts behind HAARP in the 1980s and proposed using high-frequency radio waves to beam large amounts of power into the ionosphere. This would energize its electrons and ions and disable incoming missiles with the idea of knocking out satellite communications.

The US military became interested in the idea as an alternative to the laser-based "Star Wars" Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). However, Eastlund's ideas were eventually dropped as SDI mutated into the limited National Missile Defense. Contractors selected to build HAARP have denied that any of Eastlund's patents were used in the development of the project.

After the physicists raised early concerns, controversy was stoked by local activism. In September 1995, a book entitled Angels Don't Play This HAARP: Advances in Tesla Technology by Nick Begich, Jr. -- son of the late Congressman Nick Begich (D-AK) and brother of US Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) -- claimed that the project in its present stage could be used for "geophysical warfare."

Could a Super Moon cause climate chaos?

Lunacy: on March 19th the Moon will travel as close to Earth as it has been in nearly 20 years, alarming astrologers if not the scientific world (NASA/JPL) MORE PHOTOS.

Are some blaming Chandra (our Moon's ancient Indian name)? Next week, the Moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years.

Eyes are on the night sky for March 19, also known as the evening of the extreme "Super Moon," when the lunar sphere comes as close as it ever has, or will, to Earth. Some believe the astronomical event will be followed by catastrophic storms, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Here's why:

What exactly is a "Super Moon"?
The term refers to the unusually large new (or full) moon that earthlings see when the Moon travels almost as close as it can to Earth. An "extreme Super Moon" occurs when the Moon reaches its absolute closest point. On March 19, the Moon will be only 221,556 miles away -- the first extreme Super Moon in nearly 20 years. More>>
